A Fly's Wings for Anxo
At the start of the school year, the pupils of Don Carlos' class in Year Six are feeling pretty relaxed. They're not expecting any novelties, and they're not worried about getting Don Xenaro as their teacher, whose belly is so big the only way he could be a mountaineer is in a lift. But in the school playground, while waiting to go to class, the pupils realize they have a new classmate - another girl! And girls were already a majority. The first thing the new girl, Estrela Canedo, does is give the boy sharing her desk a smackeroo. This sets the cat among the pigeons. She then asks the class if they can be friends. Some of the children take advantage of her gullibility; one boy is called Anxo, which means "Angel", and Estrela thinks he must have a pair of wings. But her spontaneity and candour soon endear her to her classmates. She can take a joke; the only thing she can't take is when someone gets angry and raises their voice. A businessman, Ram籀n Gonz獺lez, has been kidnapped for six months, and it will take this girl whom the doctors have labelled "backward" and whom the newspapers call "mentally retarded" to show the others the meaning of bravery and to highlight the cowardice of those who would deprive a fellow human being of their freedom. Candour - or truth - can be the only thing that saves us.Fina Casalderrey is the recipient of the Spanish National Book Award for The Mystery of L繳a's Children. Tears of Joy
This is the true story of my childhood in Vietnam, born into poverty after the Vietnam War. Through twenty-two attempts of escape, we had to withstand a lot of obstacles and hardships and risk our lives to be able to reunite with my father in America. During the last escape, our boat, filled with seventy-three people, was caught in a big storm and we were in the middle of the ocean for three days and nights. We were surrounded by water and total darkness. Many times, the powerful wind and waves knocked against our little boat, trying to sink us to the bottom of the lifeless ocean. This is one of the many stories of the millions of Vietnamese people who escaped from Vietnam for freedom and a better opportunity. This book will hopefully inspire and motivate the younger generation and I hope for them to learn to appreciate what they have and not take things for granted. This is my piece of history.

In 1873, at the age of 21, Jan Ernst Matzeliger immigrated to America, having left all that was familiar behind in South America. He arrived with hopes and dreams of a bright future in this new country. Though Jan had no formal training, he was highly skillful with tools and machinery, having worked in his father's mechanic shops. But no one wanted to hire a Black immigrant who didn't speak English. Yet Jan didn't give up. He finally got a job at a shoe factory. As Jan learned the process and craft of shoemaking, he envisioned a new machine, a lasting machine, that would help produce more shoes more efficiently. People scoffed at Jan's idea, telling him it wasn't possible. But he wasn't deterred. Despite many obstacles, after years of planning, drawing, and experimenting, Jan is finally ready to demonstrate his lasting machine. And his invention will change the shoe industry forever. The little-known story of Jan Matzeliger and his machine comes to life for young readers.
