Shady People
There are several books for children about body safety. However, there remains the need to equip children to recognize and respond to potentially dangerous situations, even with people they might know and may have even trusted in the past. This book also helps equip children to report potential abuse in appropriate ways, a major need! In addition, "Shady People" approaches the extremely difficult subject of body safety in a whimsical way that does not rob a child of their innocence. Here's what some experts are saying about "Shady People." "Shady People takes an incredibly hard topic and makes it whimsical and fun. The tone is light, but the message is powerful. Any child who reads Shady People will walk away with a clear understanding of body safety. This book has the power to save children from unnecessary trauma. I would highly recommend that every parent take the time to share it with their children." Natasha Daniels, LCSW Child Therapist & Author, Hill Child Counseling Creator of www.AnxiousToddlers.com "Shady People explores through a simple approach and rhyme, a very difficult and important subject that needs to be heard by all young children. By providing a nondescript villain, SHADY can become a focal point for children to attach unpleasant actions and feelings. In the end she finds a way to face her upcoming move with generosity, optimism, and enthusiasm. This book teaches children that change can sometimes be good and that they have the power to turn what they perceive will be a negative change into a positive experience by keeping an open mind and giving the new situation a chance, by "waiting to see" what happens. In this beautifully and vibrantly illustrated chapter book, main character Zoe-Marie's fears about moving and her grief of leaving behind her best friends, her home, and her vegetable garden are acknowledged and validated by her parents who also encourage her to share her feelings and reassure her that they will be there to listen, understand, and to provide any help that she needs. This heart-warming story, with its wonderful cast of multi-ethnic friends that listen and echo in "kid talk" what Zoe-Marie's mom and dad have already told her make Zoe-Marie finally decide that her move may just work out fine!Great for Parents and teachers, this book is used in the book "Homeschooling not School at Home" by author and educational speaker Dawnielle Allen, who in her book has included lesson plans from this story.
