Nationalism
Nationalism is a collection of lectures delivered by Rabindranath Tagore in Japan, in 1916. This collection is divided into three essays: Nationalism in Japan, Nationalism in the West, and Nationalism in India. During the time when these lectures were delivered, the First World War was unfolding. Tagore's lectures critiquing nationalism led to a mixed response. The lectures critique the concepts of nation and nationalism that turn men and women away from their self-sacrificing and creative nature. Tagore cautions us against aggressive imperialistic tendencies of nationalism found in the West and Japan. He proposes an alternate definition of nationalism for India-one that is shaped through the works of medieval mystics, poets and spiritual figures, such as Guru Nanak, Sant Kabir Das, and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Tagore's thoughts on nation and nationalism bore a lasting influence on Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Interestingly, Tagore criticized Gandhi's Non-cooperation Movement as narrow, and dangerous. In his infamous meeting with Gandhi in 1921, he focused on India's hospitality and the country's potential to contribute towards creating a more united world. These discussions helped Gandhi rework the meaning of nationalism. Tagore's ideas on diversity and inclusivity went on to help Nehru shape up his vision of India as a synthesis between tradition and modernity.
The Art of War
Originally written in Chinese by Sunzi and Wutzu as The Articles of Suntzu and The Sayings of Wutzu and translated into English by Captain Everard Ferguson Calthrop, The Book of War: The Military Classic of the Far East is one of the most expansive works of literature on warfare in Chinese literature. Written during a time when China was a mosaic of different principles and ambitions, Suntzu put war tactics and strategies in words, spelling out when to go to war, what to do and what not to do while at war, and how to treat one's enemy if victory is the ultimate goal. The Japanese applied these war strategies more than the Chinese where generations of soldiers swore by Sunzi and Wutzu. Captain E.F. Ferguson translated these war strategies into English, and even though we know not much about these Chinese masters, except the ruthlessness of Sunzi and the immorality of Wutzu, the translation immortalizes them in these words and pages.

They could place cannons there to bombard the British army. Cannons on Dorchester Heights meant the colonials needed to build walls to protect their soldiers. But January in Massachusetts was so cold that the ground was frozen. No one could dig foundations for walls. Inspired by a French book, Putnam designed a wall of wood, filled with bundles of sticks. Quartermaster Thomas Mifflin gathered wood, wagons, hay bales and much more from the surrounding countryside. On March 4, 1776, Boston lay under a light fog, while Dorchester Heights saw a full moon. That night, men brought in materials and built a defensive wall, and then brought in cannons. By morning the battle was won, without firing a shot. Putnam's plan had worked! After eight years of occupying Boston, the British sailed away on March 17, 1776. Courage and engineering ingenuity are celebrated in this intriguing story of the role of engineering in the Revolutionary War. Later in life, Rufus Putnam advocated for the establishment of the Corps of Engineers.
