My Bookhouse
Full of delightful fairy tales, charming poems, and engaging stories, the My Bookhouse series for children was published in the 1920s by Olive Beaupr矇 Miller as a six-volume set. The books contained the best in children's literature and progressed through a natural, carefully graded order, from the simplest poems and stories to those that are more complex. Miller set high standards for the books: "First, -To be well equipped for life, to have ideas and the ability to express them, the child needs a broad background of familiarity with the best in literature. "Second, -Stories and rhymes must be selected with care that the child may absorb no distorted view of life and its actual values, but may grow up to be mentally clear about values and emotionally impelled to seek what is truly desirable and worthwhile in human living. "Third, -The stories and rhymes selected must be graded to the child's understanding at different periods of growth, graded as to vocabulary, as to subject matter and as to complexity of structure and plot."The series would eventually include twelve volumes. The original volumes included: Volume 1, In the Nursery (1920) Volume 2, Up One Pair of Stairs (1920) Volume 3, Through Fairy Halls (1920) Volume 4, The Treasure Chest (1920) Volume 5, From The Tower Window (1921) Volume 6, The Latch Key (1921)The series is an ideal teaching aid for parents who want to help their children read well, think clearly, and absorb the most important lessons that literature has to teach. This volume, a facsimile of the original 1921 edition of From the Tower Window, features classic stories from around the world. It also features the color illustrations included in the original edition of the book. It is printed on acid-free, archival-quality paper for durability and long use.
EiM Anthology with Mark Grist 2023
Dear Reader, I am thrilled to share this anthology "Looking back, moving forward" with you. Inside you will find a collection of exceptional poetry written by primary and secondary students across nine different Education in Motion (EiM) schools around the world. From Beijing to Shanghai, Seoul to Switzerland, these poems embody the diverse voices, thoughtful nature and incredible talent that exists across our international community. Curating this anthology has been both a challenge and a joy. I received an abundance of submissions - hundreds, in fact. I'd like to start by saying thank you to everyone that sent work through this year and to offer my apologies to anyone that didn't make it into this collection. The work was exceptional - seriously impressive - and each piece that didn't make it in was still a testament to the passion and creativity of its author. Please know that your warmth, personality, and genuine care shone through in your words. I wish I could have fitted in more! For those that did make it - well done! This second anthology marks another step forward in our collective literary journey and I'm so proud of the work that's been produced. Some of these poems delve into personal triumphs and losses, offering poignant reflections on life's journey. Others contemplate our existence, questioning the paths we tread. And in the spirit of youthful exuberance, you will find also passionate pieces that critique even the most mundane of things. It's the variety and ambition of these pieces that I love the most.Getting the opportunity to travel and work face-to-face with students from around the world has been so rewarding - it always reminds me how much we have in common as well as how varied and unique we each are as writers and human beings. Great writers tend to come about thanks to great support and guidance and I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all the teachers I got to work with across EiM campuses this year for helping on this project. I always feel so fortunate to get to work with such ambitious, compassionate, and inspiring teachers. Your unwavering commitment to nurturing creativity has played a significant role in the outstanding quality of the work presented here.I am also very grateful to Edgar Zillmann at EiM, whose high standards, compassion for others and tireless efforts in making these projects come to life blow my mind every year. I'd also like to acknowledge and thank Jenni Harrison for her invaluable copy editing support - thank you for ensuring that each poem in this collection shines as brightly as it does. This anthology stands as a testament to the extraordinary achievements of these young budding writers. It is a testament to their dedication, creativity, and unyielding spirit. I've loved working with them and reading their work - now it's your turn. As you immerse yourself in their words and embrace their stories, I hope you'll enjoy these poems as much as I have. With heartfelt gratitude, Mark Grist
ZillyZoo
Zillyzoo is definitely not your usual book of animal poems for children. The 'zoo' is divided into 3 'zones'.Each 'zone' begins with the image of a door on which is written an introduction to what lies beyond.Poems in Zone 3 offer different levels of complexity and challenge, and has been written for more able young readers to think about and explore. In the first zone, poems are mostly light-hearted and humorous, but even here there are those that ask the reader to think about what they've read. Not everything is always obvious. The very first poem (A day at the zoo #1) is obviously just about a visit to the zoo. That's all there is to it . . . or is it? This poem introduces the first of several mini-themes that pop up here and there throughout the whole book ... but I leave readers to make their own sense of them. The second zone continues these same themes, but now there is more to think about. What secrets or secret lives do a lot of the animals have? Even poems like 'A very modern cow' might seem to be too simple to even think about. Maybe it is just a little rhyme about a sad cow? Or maybe the little animal is hoping the reader will wonder why its parents and grandparents had names, but it only has a number. That is is the essence of ZillyZoo. Hidden amongst a lot of narrative or humorous verse, there are all sorts of ideas that will hopefully trigger readers' curiosity and imagination.Zone 3 takes this theme much further. As it says on the door at the start of the final set of poems, "There are shadows here." These are poems for more able readers who hopefully want more than just a light-hearted poem or a few minutes' amusement. These poems are written to stimulate responses, imagination, maybe discussion, and thought ... but they never go so far as to require personal interpretation to become full-on analysis.I've never felt happy assigning reading levels or abilities to specific ages as some sort of 'target' or as a threshold for levels of understanding. What is challenging for a child, of say, 8, can be easily understood by another of the same or a younger age. My bracketing of 'ages 6-13' is therefore only a very simple guide.
Coloured Candy Paper
Coloured Candy Paper captures the various facets of human experience: the pursuit of love, theevanescence of existence, the nuance of pain and pleasure and how the line between the two blurs out. It's a reminder that life is as much about the willingness to embrace chaos as it is about being still.
