Tongue twisters have come a long way since "Susie sold seashells by the seashore." Today's tongue twisters come in crazy, hilarious varieties like the short and simple, "Rear wheel rims" (say it three times fast), or the longer and hard to understand variety such as: "Was who you're with where you are with you when you were where you were?" (Both of which are found in this book.)Besides being fun to say out loud, tongue twisters can be readily adapted to language arts programs and are are great for developing the sometimes neglected language arts skill of articulation - that is, saying words clearly so they can be understood. After you've mastered these English-language tongue twisters, try to recite foreign language tongue twisters. Just do an Internet search on the term, "foreign language tongue twisters" and you can pick from examples in dozens of languages. Here's one in Spanish: "Mi mam獺 me mima mucho." Broken Crayons
While Karter and I were trying to come up with a title for this book, I must admit it was fun to see what he could come up with. We were tossing around titles, and I finally said, "Karter, what about, "The Person who sits Next to Me." We can have a picture of students in a classroom sitting at their desks and some of the students have questions marks on their face. Karter replied, "No. I don't like that, Nana." I said OK what do you think? Karter said, Bullies are like crayons. I said, how do you mean? Karter tells me, "When crayons are broken, they can still color. When bullies are broken, they can still be good people and good friends." I said, "I love that thought Karter and I think we have the title."

’Twas Halloween Night
Poetry, rhymed or otherwise, is, has always been, and always will be, a significant part of our culture. When at our best, we have the insight to recognize how barren life would be without it. The poetic style of "'Twas Halloween Night" imitates that of "A Visit from Saint Nicholas"-its rhythm as well as its rhyming couplets. Because of my love for Shakespeare, in choosing the meter I seriously considered iambic pentameter. But Moore's four beats somehow seemed more appropriate than the Bard's five. My hope is that this deliberate imitation (homage, perhaps?) will serve as an attractive entrance point-a friendly literary "Welcome" mat-for the reader. I also wrote "'Twas Halloween Night" with a mind towards how Dickens, in his great holiday story, makes sure both to comment on society and to suggest ways in which we, as its members, might make it better. Thus, Jorlyn's experience, like Scrooge's, leads her to a greater understanding of her human family and her responsibility to it. Years ago, when I first began working on the poem, I had in mind the need for my own little boy to be aware of, and sensitive to, the world around him. How was I to know that years later, that need-on his part as well as all of ours-would be greater than ever?
