Time School

Nikki,Young  著
Ingram 出版
2021/04/12 出版

The Time School series follows four friends as they navigate their way through the first year at secondary school, whilst returning to the past at different time-periods. During these time-travelling adventures, they each discover something about their family history, as well as how events that were going on at that time affected their families. This is an opportunity for the children to understand how the past affects your present life and for Jess, Nadia, Ash and Tomma, how these events have affected them personally. When you're running late for school, then you find your usual train has turned into an old steam train, you know it's not going to be a normal day. What you don't expect is that it will be a 'take you back in time' sort of day. Jess, Nadia, Tomma and Ash find themselves spending the day at Hickley School one hundred years in the past. They are told stories of bombings, hunger, and fighting, from fellow pupil, Martha, the only person willing to speak to them. After their time travel adventure, they work out the significance of the year, 1918, and plot to go back. They want to experience a significant moment in history and Jess wants to see Martha again. Not knowing why or how, Jess feels a connection to Martha, and an obligation towards her that she can't explain. Going back in time has its risks. Once you go back, there's no way of knowing if you'll be able to make it home.

This is an opportunity for the children to understand how the past affects your present life and for Jess, Nadia, Ash and Tomma, how these events have affected them personally.Nadia Kaminski knows very little about her Polish grandfather so how is she going to write a speech about him to read at his funeral? She's never really considered her Polish roots, so a trip back in time to time (to the end of the Second World War) and an encounter with Marcel, a Polish refugee, might be just what Nadia needs. Along with fellow time-travellers, Jess, Tomma and Ash, this is the group's second experience of Hickley School in the past, and a chance to discover the struggles of those who found themselves stranded in a country that wasn't their own. It's time to board the train for another exciting journey back in time.

Greenwood District, Oklahoma, 1921: Twelve-year-old Henry Simmons has lived his entire life in Greenwood, Oklahoma, a district in the northern part of Tulsa. He's loved by his parents and neighbors, annoyed by his little sister, and protected by his community, a neighborhood full of hard-working, successful Black people like his mama and daddy. People call Greenwood "Black Wall Street," and Henry plans to grow up there until he becomes a famous writer or baseball player-or both. Sure, he sees racism firsthand when he goes with his daddy to "White Tulsa." That's the night Henry's life changes forever. His family's life changes forever. All the neighborhoods of Greenwood change forever-because 19-year-old Dick Rowland, a Black shoeshiner working in Tulsa, is accused of assaulting a White female elevator operator. That accusation and Dick's arrest turn into twelve hours of terror for Greenwood residents. And Henry and his family are right in the middle of the chaos, hate, and massacre. For these twelve hours, Henry, his mother, and his younger sister Livvie watch White men and women destroy their neighborhood while they miss Daddy, who went to help protect Dick at the courthouse. Sometimes, Henry, Mama, and Livvie hide; sometimes, they flee; and always, they are shocked by the terrifying behavior of their fellow human beings. The Box of Secrets

Independentl 出版
2021/04/02 出版

As a history teacher, I enjoyed learning a new aspect of the Revolutionary War through this book. The relationship between the modern day main characters and their mystery was intriguing and interesting enough to keep even a non-history person engaged with the overall story. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable story for all ages!An antique trunk purchased at auction contains secrets that lead Greta and her grandfather on a veritable treasure hunt through history. Will they be able to keep the treasure, or at least keep it out of the hands of those who want to steal it? The answer rests with members of the Culper spy ring, who served George Washington and helped to win the American Revolution. As Greta and Gramps trace the contents of the box in the present, some of the most charismatic characters of the Revolution-George Washington, Nathan Hale, Benedict Arnold, John Andre, and a lady spy simply known as Agent 355-weave the historical account of how a group of volunteer spies from Long Island thwarted the mighty British Empire. The greatest army and navy in the world could not humble the upstart rebels into submission.Combining historical fact and a contemporary mystery, the author has created an entertaining adventure with colorful personalities and not a few surprises. Sometimes history really is stranger than fiction!

★Booklist ★Bookpage ★The Bulletin ★Publishers Weekly ★Shelf Awareness ★SLC ★SLJ "CRUCIAL." --The New York Times Book Review In the rubble of a broken continent, a girl must solve a mystery whose answers could rebuild her family--or break her completely, in this New York Times bestselling, critically acclaimed tour de force historical novel from Monica Hesse, author of Girl in the Blue Coat. Germany, 1945. The soldiers who liberated the Gross-Rosen concentration camp say the war is over, but nothing feels over to eighteen-year-old Zofia Lederman. Her body has barely begun to heal, her mind feels broken. And her life is completely shattered: Three years ago, she and her younger brother, Abek, were the only members of their family to be sent to the right, away from the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Everyone else--her parents, her grandmother, radiant Aunt Maja--they went left. Zofia's last words to her brother were a promise: Abek to Zofia, A to Z. When I find you again, we will fill our alphabet. Now her journey to fulfill that vow takes her through Poland and Germany, into a displaced persons camp where everyone she meets is trying to piece together a future from a painful past: Miriam, desperately searching for the twin she was separated from after they survived medical experimentation. Breine, a former heiress, who now longs only for a simple wedding with her new fianc矇. And Josef, who guards his past behind a wall of secrets, and is beautiful and strange and magnetic all at once. But the deeper Zofia digs, the more impossible her search seems. How can she find one boy in a sea of the missing? "This is not just a story about death and survival--it's also about choosing to live on, even in the face of genocide, trauma and devastating loss. And what could be more relevant to our world today?" --Sharon Cameron, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Light in Hidden Places, writing in The New York Times "A heartbreaking, gorgeously written story...The ending left me breathless and awed by its expression of enduring love."―Jewell Parker Rhodes, New York Times bestselling author of Ghost Boys

Leah Henderson's picture book A Day for Rememberin' is a moving tribute to the little-known history behind the first Memorial Day, illustrated by Coretta Scott King Award winner Floyd Cooper. Today is a special day. Eli knows it's important if he's allowed to miss one second of school, his "hard-earned right." Inspired by true events and told through the eyes of a young boy, this is the deeply moving story about what is regarded as the first Memorial Day on May 1, 1865. Call Me Athena

Ingram 出版
2021/04/01 出版

An enchanting novel in verse, Call Me Athena captures one young woman's struggle for independence, equality, and identity as the daughter of Greek and French immigrants in tumultuous 1930s Detroit. Mary lives in a tiny apartment in Detroit in the 1930s with her Greek and French immigrant parents, her brothers, and her twin sister, and she questions why her parents ever came to America. She yearns for true love, to own her own business, and to be an independent, modern American woman--much to the chagrin of her parents, who want her to be a "good Greek girl." Mary's story is peppered with flashbacks to her parents' childhoods in Greece and northern France; their stories connect with Mary as they address issues of arranged marriage, learning about independence, and yearning to grow beyond one's own culture. Though Call Me Athena is written from the perspective of three profoundly different narrators, it has a wide-reaching message: It takes courage to fight for tradition and heritage, as well as freedom, love, and equality. Call Me Athena: Girl from Detroit is a beautifully written novel in verse loosely based on author Colby Cedar Smith's paternal grandmother, creating a historically accurate portrayal of life as an immigrant during the Great Depression, hunger strikes, and violent riots.

A witty, breathtaking and educational adventure, Socrates & Soc takes a look into the past and present through the eyes of two identical 13-year-old boys who time-travel and trade places with the help of the magic stone, one of the boys being the ancient philosopher Socrates. Although the duo may be from different centuries, 457 BC and 2004 AD, they share the same name and hail from the same city, Athens in Greece, and what's more, one of the boys happens to be the ancient philosopher Socrates. What happens in 2004? As a boy, ancient Socrates implements his philosophical ideas as a way of life, and author Maria Xenidou portrays him as wise, strong minded and intelligent. Employing the dialectic method, he continually poses questions to invoke people into thinking about situations and issues, and after deduction, their own conclusions are exactly what the boy said in the first place. Some things just don't make sense to him, but there is nothing complicated about one of the greatest minds experiencing for the first time fizzy drinks and burping!Meanwhile in 457 B.C, Soc witnesses how the ancient Olympic Games took place and has a chance to explore the ancient world which he discovers surprisingly liberal and advanced in ways he never expected. Without TV and Wii, Soc has a hard time adjusting to a life-change that's full of physical activities and mishaps. In no time he learns to adapt and appreciate the ancient ways of his ancestors and gradually starts to love a more natural way of life.An adventurous and compelling story for ages nine to eighteen, the book is peppered with humor, steeped in ancient Greek life, and guaranteed to equally amuse and amaze older readers.

It Rained Warm Bread

Square Fish 出版
2021/03/01 出版

A powerful middle grade novel-in-verse about one boy's experience surviving the Holocaust. Moishe Moskowitz was thirteen when the Nazis invaded Poland and his family learned the language of fear. The wolves loomed at every corner, yet Moishe still held on to the blessings of his mother's blueberry pierogis, of celebrating the Sabbath as a family, of a loyal friend. But each day the darkness weighed more heavily on Moishe as his family was broken, uprooted, and scattered across labor and concentration camps. Just as his last hopes began to dim, a simple act of kindness redeemed his faith that goodness could survive the trials of war: That was the day it rained warm bread. Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet relates her father's triumphant Holocaust story through the words of award-winning poet Hope Anita Smith. Deftly articulated and beautifully illustrated by Lea Lyon, this is an essential addition to the ever-important collection of Holocaust testimonies. Christy Ottaviano Books

The Degenerates

Ingram 出版
2021/03/01 出版

"Respectful, unflinching, and eye-opening." --Kirkus Reviews "Historical fiction that not only depicts a cruel, horrifying reality but also the strength and courage of the people who had to endure it." --Booklist In the tradition of Girl, Interrupted, this fiery historical novel follows four young women in the early 20th century whose lives intersect when they are locked up by a world that took the poor, the disabled, the marginalized-and institutionalized them for life. The Massachusetts School for the Feeble-Minded is not a happy place. The young women who are already there certainly don't think so. Not Maxine, who is doing everything she can to protect her younger sister Rose in an institution where vicious attendants and bullying older girls treat them as the morons, imbeciles, and idiots the doctors have deemed them to be. Not Alice, either, who was left there when her brother couldn't bring himself to support a sister with a club foot. And not London, who has just been dragged there from the best foster situation she's ever had, thanks to one unexpected, life-altering moment. Each girl is determined to change her fate, no matter what it takes.

With a Star in My Hand

Ingram 出版
2021/03/01 出版

"Exceptional." --Booklist (starred review) "Heartfelt...Thoughtful and effective." --The Horn Book "Engle's lyrical poetry emotionally conveys the reality of being a greatly gifted, passionate, and deeply ambitious young man in a turbulent time." --BCCB From acclaimed author Margarita Engle comes a gorgeous novel in verse about Rub矇n Dar穩o, the Nicaraguan poet and folk hero who initiated the literary movement of Modernismo. As a little boy, Rub矇n Dar穩o loved to listen to his great uncle, a man who told tall tales in a booming, larger-than-life voice. Rub矇n quickly learned the magic of storytelling, and discovered the rapture and beauty of verse. A restless and romantic soul, Rub矇n traveled across Central and South America seeking adventure and connection. As he discovered new places and new loves, he wrote poems to express his wild storm of feelings. But the traditional forms felt too restrictive. He began to improvise his own poetic forms so he could capture the entire world in his words. At the age of twenty-one, he published his first book Azul, which heralded a vibrant new literary movement called Modernismo that blended poetry and prose into something magical. In gorgeous poems of her own, Margarita Engle tells the story of this passionate young man who revolutionized world literature.

He needs a real weapon-an Indian bow. And it wouldn't hurt to have a friend either-one who would share his dream of being brave, one crazy enough to fight alongside him, one who'd stick with him whether or not they shared the same skin color. But when tragedies plop the responsibility for the family farm square on Marty's shoulders and give the bully a chance to destroy everything, will a bow, a friend, and The Panther Indian Pact give him the courage to face his sworn enemy?
