Plenty for All
Rick Fr繹berg was an accomplished artist and musician born in Southern California who spent most of his early creative years in San Diego before moving to New York, and then back to San Diego toward the end of his life. While juggling both of his creative outlets, he established a meaningful, urgent, vital, and powerful platform. Plenty for All: The Art of Rick Fr繹berg represents the many chapters and layers of his visual art practice. All of the different bodies of work he made are examined in detail--presenting the viewer with a well-rounded survey of his life's work, mostly in chronological order. One of the most compelling and fascinating aspects of this volume is the physical progression of Fr繹berg's line work and brushstroke, and his eventual adaptation to digital means. His artwork was often featured on the record covers of his own bands, as well as other groups he met on the road, and much of his early work also appeared on posters, flyers, ads, skateboard graphics, logos, and T-shirt designs, before eventually progressing to illustrations in magazines, books, and newspapers. Fr繹berg's paintings, drawings, etchings, and prints were also shown at art exhibitions throughout his career. Plenty for All is the first look at his visual artwork in book form. It will be of great interest across the globe to his many fans (he played in a range of popular bands, including Pitchfork, Drive like Jehu, Hot Snakes, and Obits). Fr繹berg's work has become very influential, and an inspiration to quite a large group of people in both the art and music worlds. He is sadly missed and mourned, but this volume will no doubt further his creative legacy. It includes short essays by curator Rich Jacobs and musician/artist Sohrab Habibion.
Wayne Thiebaud
This catalogue accompanies the first UK show of Wayne Thiebaud's quintessentially postwar American paintings Wayne Thiebaud is considered one of the greatest and most original American artists of the 20th century. This publication accompanies the first museum show of his work in the United Kingdom. Throughout his long life, working mainly in Sacramento, California, Thiebaud developed a unique style of painting to express his vision of modern American subjects. This publication will present Thiebaud's remarkable, vibrant and lushly painted still lives of quintessentially post-war American subjects, from diner food and deli counters to gumball dispensers and pinball machines. These are the paintings that established Thiebaud's name in the USA in the early 1960s. Thiebaud considered the everyday objects of American life to be a vital subject for contemporary art, and he saw his work as continuing the radical legacy of earlier still-life paintings by Chardin, Manet, Cezanne and others. Thiebaud believed in the importance of commonplace objects that might otherwise be overlooked or considered kitsch. His work turns hot dogs, lemon meringue pies and glossy cream cakes into the stuff of profound modern painting. Hiroshi Yoshida Travels
Hiroshi Yoshida (吉田 博, Yoshida Hiroshi, September 19, 1876 - April 5, 1950) was a 20th-century Japanese painter and woodblock printmaker. Along with Hasui Kawase, he is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the shin-hanga style, and is noted especially for his landscape prints. Yoshida made numerous trips around the world, with the aim of getting to know different artistic expressions and making works of different landscapes. He traveled widely, and was particularly known for his images of non-Japanese subjects done in traditional Japanese woodblock style, including the Taj Mahal, the Swiss Alps, the Grand Canyon, and other National Parks in the United States.Yoshida was known to be meticulous about the process and quality of his finished prints. He did not give his prints the "seal of approval" or the stamp of his name, "jizuri" (self-print), unless he was extremely satisfied with the end result. In 1925, he hired a group of professional carvers and printers, and established his own studio. Prints were made under his close supervision. Yoshida combined the ukiyo-e collaborative system with the sōsaku-hanga principle of "artist's prints", and formed a third school, separating himself from the shin-hanga and sōsaku-hanga movement. At the age of 73, Yoshida took his last sketching trip to Izu and Nagaoka and painted his last works The Sea of Western Izu and The Mountains of Izu. He became sick on the trip and returned to Tokyo where he died on 5 April, 1950, at his home.
