Orbis Africa Journal
The Orbis Africa Journal is a new publishing platform that aims to foster discussion about the African world and its diaspora. Starting with rock art on the African continent over thirty thousand years ago, our journey extends to creating graphic writing systems in the modern era in the Americas. By recognizing Africa as a central subject across disciplines, we can better understand its foundations and appreciate the unique ways in which the African intellectual legacy intersects with our world. We believe that to understand history, philosophy, art history, archaeology, anthropology, visual culture, and literature from both the recent and distant past, it is essential to study them in relation to Africa. As a platform, the journal will evaluate African contributions and analyze the perspectives of African knowledge on contemporary issues. By doing so, it becomes feasible to use this knowledge to improve our ability to ask better questions about individuals and society.

Caucasus Franz Roubaud Russian Orientalist Painter
Franz Roubaud was a Russian Orientalist painter of French origin born in Odessa, which was then part of the Russian Empire.Franz Roubaud (1856-1928) is of the same period as the famous Spanish painter Joaquin Sorolla, who was born six years later and which the authors have covered in other titles.Roubaud first of all paints Caucasian themes - wars, river crossings, markets, landscapes, horsemen and he is excellent, mastering the painting of horses in all settings and from all angles, one or many together. The Caucasus is a well known flashpoint with proud warriors admired by their women and some of which were later employed by the Imperial Russian Army, see authors織 book Russo-Japanese War.His style has both a German and a Russian flavour. He was strongly influenced the Munich painter Theodor Horschelt (1829 - 1871) whose work he saw in Tbilisi, Georgia in the 1870 during a trip there with his parents Roubaud adopted a lot from Horschelt, including never take sides, even in commissioned work.We hope you will enjoy our selection of works by Franz Roubaud.

Barbarian Currents
Contemporary art and media art do not exist in separate worlds. In 20th century Brazil technology was a key element of artistic imagination. Oswald de Andrade, the father of Brazilian 'cannibal' modernism, envisioned the Americas as a cradle of a new society populated by technicised barbarians. The country's post-war avant-gardes embraced computers and electronic media as transformative forces, capable of realising the promise of a nation in search of its modern identity. Barbarian Currents explores this history through a sociological lens, examining the many intriguing circumstances that have shaped the new forms of cultural and artistic expression. This pioneering anthology brings together the voices of artists, critics and curators who played a pivotal role in the emergence of technological arts in post-war Brazil. The documents, most of which have been translated into English for the first time, remind us that 'alternative' art histories are simply the flipside of dominant narratives. They encourage us to look beyond the lens of Western exceptionalism and reframe our understanding of cultural histories worldwide.

Wonders
In the mid-19th century, intrepid explorers began to shine a light on the darkness of the deep. The mystique of what lay beneath the surface of the vast oceans inspired awe in aquarium enthusiasts, Decadent artists, and authors, including Jules Verne and Hans Christian Andersen. Ever since, books, films and visual arts have invited us to contemplate the sea as both the wellspring of all life and a resolutely alien world. Wonders - A Literary History of the Deep Sea recalls the era of undersea telegraph cables and the heyday of the aquarium. It presents mermaids, octopuses and jellyfish and explores some of the many works of art that conceptualise undersea marvels or dream of vanishing ecstatically into the depths, into this other element. It is the story of how we imagine life was formed underwater and on our planet. It is about the historical basis for our modern perception of the sea and a call to action before the fantastic creatures with whom we have only just begun to become acquainted disappear forever.

The Sound of the English Picturesque
Revealing the connections between the veneration of national landscape and eighteenth-century English vocal music, this study restores English music's relationship with the picturesque. In the eighteenth century, the emerging taste for the picturesque was central to British aesthetics, as poets and painters gained popularity by glorifying the local landscape in works concurrent with the emergence of native countryside tourism. Yet English music was seldom discussed as a medium for conveying national scenic beauty. Stephen Groves explores this gap, and shows how secular song, the glee, and national theatre music expressed a uniquely English engagement with landscape.Using an interdisciplinary approach, Groves addresses the apparent 'silence' of the English picturesque. The book draws on analysis of the visualisations present in the texts of English vocal music, and their musical treatment, to demonstrate how local composers incorporated celebrations of landscape into their works. The final chapter shows that the English picturesque was a crucial influence on Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Seasons. Suitable for anyone with an interest in eighteenth-century music, aesthetics, and the natural environment, this book will appeal to a wide range of specialists and non-specialists alike.

Ju Ming
Published in commemoration of Ju's first exhibition at the National Art Museum of China--also the first Taiwanese to ever stage an art exhibition in China, this publication boasts a collection of Ju Ming's famed Taichi and Taichi Arch series, a representative series of works because it displays the artist's consummate skills and originality in sculpture art. This book includes prefaces by art historian Michael Sullivan and Director of the National Art Museum of China Fan Di'an. It is written by Dr Zhu Qi, Cultural Counsellor of Embassy of The People's Republic of China in Singapore.
