Dana Claxton
Known for her expansive multidisciplinary approach to art making Vancouver-based Dana Claxton, who is Hunkpapa Lakota (Sioux), has investigated notions of Indigenous identity, beauty, gender and the body, as well as broader social and political issues through a practice which encompasses photography, film, video and performance. Rooted in contemporary art strategies, her practice critiques the representations of Indigenous people that circulate in art, literature and popular culture in general. In doing so, Claxton regularly combines Lakota traditions with "Western" influences, using a powerful and emotive "mix, meld and mash" approach to address the oppressive legacies of colonialism and to articulate Indigenous world views, histories and spirituality. This timely catalogue will be the first monograph to examine the full breadth and scope of Claxton's practice. It will be extensively illustrated and will include essays by Claxton's colleague Jaleh Mansoor, Associate Professor in the Department of Art History, Visual Art & Theory at the University of British Columbia; Monika Kin Gagnon, Professor in the Communications Department at Concordia University, who has followed Claxton's work for 25 years; Olivia Michiko Gagnon, a New York-based scholar and doctoral student in Performance Studies; and Grant Arnold, Audain Curator of British Columbia Art at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The second part presents a history of modern Indian painting, with essays on the Bengal School, the so-called 'Dutch Bengal' artists, the Calcutta naturalists, the portrait painters of the Bombay School in the early 20th century, the Progressive Artists Group and the post-Independence artists of Bengal. The de Boer collection also contains strong representations of a few individual artists, such as Chittaprosad, Ganesh Pyne, Ramachandran and Broota, whose works are explored through essays and interviews. The fact that many of these chapters draw almost exclusively on the de Boer collection is a testament to its incredible size and breadth. In this volume, we hope to show how the collection takes a dispassionate view of the global status of Indian art, while at the same time revealing a commitment and long-term engagement with the country and its creativity. Don Proch
SHORT-LISTED Manuela Dias Design and Illustration Awards, 2020 SHORT-LISTED Alexander Kennedy Isbister Award for Non-Fiction, 2020 Since 1970, Manitoba artist Don Proch has built an astonishing body of work evoking a semi-mythical Prairie past and an unsettled and unresolved modernity. In his complex sculptures and life-size masks, Proch combines intricate draftsmanship with natural and found materials in surprising and transformative ways. Proch grew up in the farmland of north-central Manitoba. Using the rolling hills and unique parkland vistas of the Asessippi valley he creates a complex personal iconography based on prairie life, landscape, geology and history. The result is what art critic Robert Enright called "inexplicable as a miracle." Proch first came to the Canadian art world's attention as part of a group of radical young artists in the 1970s, intent on shaking up the art establishment. His complex installations, masks, and silkscreen prints quickly established his reputation as an innovator with a unique vision. Today he is recognized as one of the most influential visual artists to come out of western Canada, and his work can be found in major public and corporate collections including Canada's major art galleries. Richly illustrated with more than 80 plates, the book includes rare excerpts from Proch's notebooks that reveal his intricate working process. Surveying the course of Proch's career, curator and art historian Patricia Bovey discusses the themes and influences behind his work and their context within the history of Canadian art.

The Frescoes of Conrad Albrizio
The artist Conrad Albrizio (1894-1973), a New York City native who studied internationally, made his home in New Orleans for more than a half century. To the people of Louisiana and Alabama, he bestowed the lasting gift of large-scale public frescoes, a form he championed long after the general popularity of communal art waned. From regional realism in his New Deal-commissioned works of the 1930s to his abstract-influenced, socially conscious interpretations of the 1950s, Albrizio's creations exemplify the midcentury period while showcasing the ancient technique of fresco. In this lavishly illustrated volume, Carolyn A. Bercier analyzes Albrizio's frescoes against the backdrop of the artist's life. In her introduction, Elise Grenier, who has restored several of Albrizio's murals, acquaints readers with the demands of painting in fresco, a method also employed by Albrizio's contemporaries the Mexican muralists. By 1936, Albrizio had completed six fresco panels in the Louisiana State Capitol and his first federally funded mural, in the DeRidder, Louisiana, post office. That same year he joined the faculty of Louisiana State University's new department of art, where his students depicted him within their murals in Allen Hall. Albrizio continued his fresco commissions for another eighteen years, including scenes in the post office in Russellville, Alabama; the State Fair Exhibits Building in Shreveport, Louisiana; the Capitol Annex Building in Baton Rouge; and the parish courthouse in New Iberia, Louisiana. His culminating accomplishments are an epic cycle portraying shipping, the elements, and the constellations in the lobby of the Waterman Building (now Wachovia Building) in Mobile, and a monumental rendition of Louisiana's history in the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. Both visually lush and richly informative, The Frescoes of Conrad Albrizio pays deserved homage and brings fresh awareness to the under-recognized public murals of a passionate and prolific artist of the twentieth century.

Maximalism and Visual Delight
Bright, bold, and bursting with color-drenched patterns, the paintings of the postmodernist American artist Jeanne Leighton-Lundberg Clarke (1925-2014) shimmer like the stained-glass windows of an abstract cathedral. For decades, her "Favorite Ladies" paintings have delighted viewers with their almost whimsical appropriation of famous women from the history of art, borrowing from the canvases of such artists as ?douard Manet, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol. Stylistically paralleling the post-modernist movement of Pattern & Decoration, Clarke explored gender, familial relationships, and religious symbolism from sometimes unexpected and even contradictory perspectives; she explored femininity and female roles while resisting the label of feminist. Clarke, however, embraced the stylistic descriptor of maximalism. For decades, critics and historians have employed the term maximalism both to describe artworks and designs that embrace decorative overload and visual excess as well as to define trends that counter the reductive qualities of the minimalist aesthetic. When Clarke identified herself as a maximalist in 1980, she was the first known artist in contemporary history to use the term to denote a formal stylistic approach, rather than simply an adjective. Following in her pioneering footsteps, this book is the first to explore the contributions of Clarke as well as her role in the development of Maximalism. The authors take the reader on a visual journey, exploring the modernist roots of Clarke and her gendered approach to contemporary genre painting and culminating in a survey of the early twenty-first century fascination with Maximalism.

The Pantheon
The Pantheon is one of the most important architectural monuments of all time. Hilma Af Klint
At the turn of the twentieth century, Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) created a body of work that left visible reality behind, exploring the radical possibilities of abstraction years before Vasily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, or Piet Mondrian. Many consider her the first trained artist to create abstract paintings. With Hilma af Klint: Notes and Methods, we get to experience the arc of af Klint's artistic investigation in her own words. Hilma af Klint studied at the Royal Swedish Academy in Stockholm where she was part of the first generation of female students. Up until the beginning of the century, she painted mainly landscapes and detailed botanical studies. Her work from this period was that of a young artist of her time who meticulously observed the world around her. But, like many of her contemporaries, af Klint was also interested in the invisible relationships that shape our world, believing strongly in a spiritual dimension. She joined the Theosophical Society, and, with four fellow female members who together called themselves "The Five," began to study mediumship. Between 1906 and 1915, purportedly guided by a higher power, af Klint created 193 individual works that, in both scale and scope of imagery, are like no other art created at that time. Botanically inspired images and mystical symbols, diagrams, words, and geometric series, all form part of af Klint's abstract language. These abstract techniques would not be seen again until years later. Notes and Methods presents facsimile reproductions of a wide array of af Klint's early notebooks accompanied by the first English translation of af Klint's extensive writings. It contains the rarely seen "Blue Notebooks," hand-painted and annotated catalogues af Klint created of her most famous series "Paintings for the Temple," and a dictionary compiled by af Klint of the words and letters found in her work. This extraordinary collection is edited by and copublished with Christine Burgin, and features an introduction by Iris M羹ller-Westermann. Fanny Palmer
As one of Currier & Ives's leading artists, Frances ("Fanny") Bond Palmer (1812-1876) was a major lithographer whose prints found their way into homes, schools, barns, taverns, business offices, yacht clubs, and elsewhere, reaching a mass audience during her day. Her life was a true American fable--the story of an immigrant who came to the United States to start a new life for herself and her family and rose to the top of her profession. In Fanny Palmer: The Life and Works of a Currier & Ives Artist, Rubinstein chronicles the details of Palmer's life, situating her work as the product of her own merit rather than as an achievement of Currier & Ives, and portraying the artist as an enterprising professional and one of the most versatile and prolific lithographers of her day. Largely ignored by art historians because of her status as a graphic artist and as an employee of famous male publishers, Palmer's work was nonetheless a staple in nineteenth-century culture. Palmer was interested in recording all subjects that made up American life: her images of railroads, clipper ships, New York City, Civil War battle scenes, pictures of domestic bliss, and vistas of the newly opened West comprised at least two hundred of the company's signed prints. A long-time employee of Currier & Ives, she also collaborated anonymously with other staff artists, supplying landscape backgrounds and architectural elements to countless compositions. Radicalism in the Wilderness
Innovative artists in 1960s Japan who made art in the "wilderness"--away from Tokyo, outside traditional norms, and with little institutional support--with global resonances.1960s Japan was one of the world's major frontiers of vanguard art. As Japanese artists developed diverse practices parallel to, and sometimes antecedent to, their Western counterparts, they found themselves in a new reality of "international contemporaneity" (kokusaiteki dōjisei). In this book Reiko Tomii examines three key figures in Japanese art of the 1960s who made radical and inventive art in the "wilderness"--away from Tokyo, outside traditional norms, and with little institutional support.These practitioners are the conceptualist Matsuzawa Yutaka, known for the principle of "vanishing of matter" and the practice of "meditative visualization" (kannen); The Play, a collective of "Happeners"; and the local collective GUN (Group Ultra Niigata). The innovative work of these artists included a visionary exhibition in Central Japan of "formless emissions" organized by Matsuzwa; the launching of a huge fiberglass egg--"an image of liberation"--from the southernmost tip of Japan's main island by The Play; and gorgeous color field abstractions painted by GUN on accumulating snow on the riverbeds of the Shinano River. Pioneers in conceptualism, performance art, land art, mail art, and political art, these artists delved into the local and achieved global relevance. Making "connections" and finding "resonances" between these three practitioners and artists elsewhere, Tomii links their local practices to the global narrative and illuminates the fundamentally "similar yet dissimilar" characteristics of their work. In her reading, Japan becomes a paradigmatic site of world art history, on the periphery but asserting its place through hard-won international contemporaneity.

The verification of everything implied in the book is in the interpretations, a few of which are given in the book along with photos of the artwork that's being interpreted. They should give the reader a feel for how the microlithic abstract art... works.
Addressing the Other Woman
This book analyses how three artists - Adrian Piper, Nancy Spero and Mary Kelly - worked with the visual dimensions of language in the 1960s and 1970s. These artists used text and images of writing to challenge female stereotypes, addressing viewers and asking them to participate in the project of imagining women beyond familiar words and images of subordination. The book explores this dimension of their work through the concept of 'the other woman', a utopian wish to reach women and correspond with them across similarities and differences. To make the artwork's aspirations more concrete, it places the artists in correspondence with three writers - Angela Davis, Valerie Solanas, and Laura Mulvey - who also addressed the limited range of images through which women are allowed to become visible.
