Hanne Darboven--Writing Time
An investigation of conceptual artist Hanne Darboven's artistic practice and her highly personal mark-making as a form of marking time on paper Hanne Darboven (1941-2009) is best known for her immersive installations of individually framed sheets filled with written formulations and collaged images. Approaching Darboven's life and work through the lens of drawing, this succinct survey is organized around three watershed moments in the artist's practice. It begins with examples of Darboven's Konstruction drawings--abstract works based in transversal and mirroring strategies--made during her two-year stay in New York in the late 1960s. The next section maps how Darboven adapted her drawing practice into formulas that calculate specific dates and durations into a single number, which the artist represented as anything from a series of calligraphic lines to a set of consecutively drawn boxes. The book concludes with a close look at Inventions that Have Changed Our World, an installation from 1996 that documents each day of the twentieth century according to Darboven's formulas and assigns an inventor, ranging from Johannes Gutenberg to the Wright brothers, to represent each of the century's ten decades. This engaging overview highlights how Darboven's work offers a deeply idiosyncratic accounting of art and life that challenges time as a linear and objective measure. Edvard Munch
The pictorial worlds of Edvard Munch--the initial impetus for modernism. In 1892, the Association of Berlin Artists invited the still-unknown Edvard Munch (1863-1944) to an exhibition. The public was shocked by the colorful, sketch-like pictures. The artist enjoyed the furor and moved to the city on the Spree, where he repeatedly sojourned until 1908. It was here that he learned the techniques for printed graphics and presented paintings for the first time. These several continuous series would become central to his collection of work. Munch's radical modernity in painting was a challenge for his contemporaries. This applied in particular to the art scene in Berlin around 1900, which the Norwegian symbolist artist influenced profoundly. An investigation into what happens in creative practice when the materials of art and research behave and perform in ways beyond the creators' intentions. In Alien Agency, Chris Salter tells three stories of art in the making. Salter examines three works in which the materials of art--the "stuff of the world"--behave and perform in ways beyond the creator's intent, becoming unknown, surprising, alien. Studying these works--all three deeply embroiled in and enabled by science and technology--allows him to focus on practice through the experiential and affective elements of creation. Drawing on extensive ethnographic observation and on his own experience as an artist, Salter investigates how researcher-creators organize the conditions for these experimental, performative assemblages--assemblages that sidestep dichotomies between subjects and objects, human and nonhuman, mind and body, knowing and experiencing. Salter reports on the sound artists Bruce Odland and Sam Auinger (O+A) and their efforts to capture and then project unnoticed urban sounds; tracks the multi-year project TEMA (Tissue Engineered Muscle Actuators) at the art research lab SymbioticA and its construction of a hybrid "semi-living" machine from specially grown mouse muscle cells; and describes a research-creation project (which he himself initiated) that uses light, vibration, sound, smell, and other sensory stimuli to enable audiences to experience other cultures' "ways of sensing." Modernist Diaspora
In the years before, during, and after the First World War, hundreds of young Jews flocked to Paris, artistic capital of the world and center of modernist experimentation. Some arrived with prior training from art academies in Krak籀w, Vilna, and Vitebsk; others came armed only with hope and a few memorized phrases in French. They had little Jewish tradition in painting and sculpture to draw on, yet despite these obstacles, these young Jews produced the greatest efflorescence of art in the long history of the Jewish people. The paintings of Marc Chagall, Amedeo Modigliani, Chaim Soutine, Sonia Delaunay-Terk, and Emmanuel Man矇-Katz, the sculptures of Jacques Lipchitz, Ossip Zadkine, Chana Orloff, and works by many other artists now grace the world's museums. As the ?cole de Paris was the most cosmopolitan artistic movement the world had seen, the left-bank neighborhood of Montparnasse became a meeting place for diverse cultures. America and Other Myths
Robert Frank's and Todd Webb's parallel 1955 projects to photograph America are considered in the context of mid-twentieth-century American culture In 1955 two photographers were awarded grants from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation to embark on trips across the United States. Robert Frank (1924-2019) drove coast to coast, photographing the highways, bars, and people that formed the basis for his widely admired publication The Americans (1958). Todd Webb (1905-2000) walked across the country, searching for "vanishing Americana and what is taking its place." Unaware of each other's work, the photographers produced strikingly similar images of the highway, parades, and dim, smoky barrooms. Yet while Frank's grainy, off-kilter style revealed many inequities of American life, Webb's carefully composed images embraced clear detail and celebrated the individual oddities of Americans and their locales. This revelatory book is the first to publish Webb's 1955 photographs and connects these parallel projects for the first time. More than one hundred images accompany text illuminating Frank's and Webb's different perspectives and approaches to similar subjects and places; the difference in reception of Frank's iconic work and Webb's relatively unknown series; and the place of the road trip in shaping American identity at midcentury. But whether or not one is a Christian, when The Last Supper is mentioned, inevitably the iconic painting by Leonardo da Vinci springs to mind. It has become a part of our collective consciousness.Created toward the end of the 15th century, da Vince painted in the mode of the day, so while the beloved masterpiece is most certainly great art, it is not particularly good history. In fact, Leonardo got it all wrong. The question must be asked, was it intentional or did he have an ulterior motive?Conspiracy theorists point to esoteric connections hidden in the picture. Magdalene cults found Mary as one of the desciples. Musical scholars found examples of Pythagorean musical ratios. Numerologists find the painting to be a playground of numerical references. There have been reported connections between da Vinci and secret cults. And of course there is Dan Brown's wildly popular international bestselling novel, The DaVinci Code. Literally thousands of theologians have attempted to explain the Christian symbolism and truth in the picture and to name the disciples as they sit in the picture.Regardless of how beloved or revered the painting was and is, apart from its symbolic representation, it was not a true representation of the real Last Supper.

Yoshitaki Kunikazu Nansuitei Yoshiyuki 100 Views of Osaka
Viewing Osaka through the series 100 Views of Naniwa (Osaka) is an amazing experience. It is a well executed repetition over a format by Hiroshige. Some add a Famous to the title. This series is by three artists, Utagawa Yoshitaki, Utagawa Kunikazu and Nansuitei Yoshiyuki. All 104 prints are included here. A New Cultural Theory of Aesthetics
Traditional aesthetics has tried to locate the reasons for aesthetic value in the transcendental subject while neglecting the importance of culture, even though it is obvious that artistic styles vary from culture to culture in both a geographical and historical sense. However, after recognizing importance of a cultural approach, one is faced with the problem of how to do so without dissolving aesthetics into art history or visual culture, the risk faced in both continental and analytic philosophical aesthetics. Scientific theories of aesthetics inspired by evolutionary psychology and cognitive science show promise, but they seek explanations without considering the importance of the cultural variations, offering reductive and superficial interpretations. Science has to consider the role of culture, and the only way to do so is through Neo-Darwinist theories of culture, like the memetic theory. In A New Cultural Theory of Aesthetics: Genes, Memes, Symbols, and Simulacra, Roberto Terrosi combines cultural research in the continental sphere with Neo-Darwinist theories to arrive at a new approach to aesthetics that is as sensitive to the problems posed by critical theory as it is to those posed by scientific research.

In Contradictions - Bringing The Past Forward, artist Barbara Gothard visually interprets and honors the legacy of twenty-three African-AmericanHomesteaders, who settled in the Eastern Mojave Desert in 1910, in the context of her own lived experience as an African American female artist living in the desert, share their stories via public presentations. The research-based multimedia Arts + Humanities installation first exhibited at the San Bernardino County Museum in 2021, consists of twenty-three digital paintings created with the software ProCreate on her iPad, which she began exploring in 2017 as an extension of her oil painting practice. These paintings, printed on Senso raw linen canvas with a process she pioneered in the desert in 2020 in conjunction with Stephen Baumbach Photography are combined with an installation of the replica of the 1910 tract map of the Lanfair Valley area, a story map created by ESRI staff Doug Morgenthaler and Jim Herries, images of related archival documents, and Lanfair/Dunbar archeological objects loaned by Mojave National Preserve. Gothard's visual illumination of the lives of these homesteaders is believed to be the first and the only time in more than 100 years that their stories are portrayed in a visual format. The artworks inform a series of artist talks and community discussions hosted by public and nonprofit organizations and on social media.
