Ewa Partum’s Artistic Practice
Polish-born artist Ewa Partum is considered a pioneer of Central-Eastern European feminist art produced within the conceptual idiom. Her work can also be divided chronologically into Polish (1965-82), West Berlin (1982-1989) and transnational (from 1989) periods. Karolina Majewska-G羹de articulates the historical alterity of Ewa Partum's works in their various locations and the specificity of the positions from which Partum's art was interpreted and disseminated. At the same time, the book engages with the art histories of the Central and Eastern European neo-avant-gardes focusing on the issue of narrative strategies of CEE art history.

In 1971 a small group of Aboriginal artists from Australia's remote Central and Western Deserts changed the face of global art history. The township of Papunya was founded in 1959 as a settlement for Aboriginal people who were relocated from their homelands. Living in cramped conditions, the community brought together people of diverse backgrounds and languages. Painting offered a way of asserting authority: of explaining who the townspeople were and where they came from amid this chaotic m矇lange of strangers. A true story, set in 1930's Canada, when, due to her family's financial struggles, a shy 12-year-old girl is sent 2,000 miles away from home to live for two years. Joyce and Alana's story, while heart wrenching at times, has lighter moments of humour and tenderness.A story of the aftermath of early 20th century divorces, economic struggle, and pioneering single mothers, with a long, strong thread of hope.

Installation art as experience of self, in space and time
Installation art has modified our relationship to art for over fifty years by soliciting the whole body, demonstrating its sensitivity to space, surroundings, and the living beings with which it is constantly interacting. This book analyses this modification of perception through phenomenological approaches convoking Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, as well as Levinas, Depraz, and the neuroscientist Varela. This theoretical framework is implicit in the various case studies which revisit works that have become classic or emblematic by Carl Andre, Bruce Nauman, Dan Graham; inaugural experiments that remain available only through photographic and written archives by Jean-Michel Sanejouand, Philippe Parreno, as well as the influence of the mode in the realm of music. The book also examines the transference of this Western form to Asia, revealing how it resonates with ancient Asian representations and practices-often associated with the spiritual.The distinct chapters underpin the role of space as a metaframe, the common ground of the various installations. While the nature and agency of space varies-from social, historical space, leisurely or political space, inner psychological space, to shared empty space-these installations reveal the chiasm between the individual body and the outside space. The chapters bear testimony of the process in which the physical journey of the spectator's body within a material-at times invisible-space and its structural components takes place in time, as a succession of micro-experiences. 'Installation art as experience of self, in space and time' adds to the existing literature of art history a level of theoretical, experiential and transcultural analysis that will make this inquiry relevant to both university students and independent researchers in the academic fields of philosophy, psychology, aesthetics, art theory and history, religious and Asian studies.
Weaving the Culture
Dr. Jennette Reid Tandy (1889 - 1968) of Carrollton, Kentucky, and Vevay, Indiana, was an unusual person, by her education, her observation of culture, both that of her home area circa 1930-1940's and of Hopi Indians in the American Southwest, and her artistic skill in portraying aspects of those cultures in a complex weaving process using cotton, six-strand floss. She was said to be one of the few in the United States to do portrait weaving. This book is both a celebration of Jennette Tands art and an enjoyable biographical image of the woman herself.

Art Judgements
An unusually large number of court cases against art, artists, and curators have taken place in Russia since the turn of the century. In reference to two of the most prominent, against the organizers of the exhibitions 'Caution, Religion!' and 'Forbidden Art 2006', the author examines the ways in which the meaning of art and its socio-political effects are argued in court: How do these trials attempt to establish a normative concept of art, and furthermore a binding juridical understanding of art? How is the discussion of what is permissible in art being framed in Russia today?Research into the post-Soviet art trials has been mainly journal-driven until today. Only the fairly recent trials of the Pussy Riot activists and Pyotr Pavlensky provoked lengthy publications, but these are mostly concerned with explicitly political and activist art rather than its particular discourse when on trial. This book, however, takes a scholarly approach towards (Russian) art on trial. It puts the cases in a national-historical context, which is compared from international perspectives, and particularly focuses on the way in which these proceedings have intensified juridical power over artistic freedom (of speech) in the production of art in Russia. We live in an era of abundant photography. Is it then counterintuitive to study photographs that disappear or are difficult to discern? Bleifer's work has always been concerned about destructive forces: man's inhumanity to man, the destructive forces of nature, the active role of human civilization as it impacts the environment and the increasing polarization of society. Since her primary medium has been paper - not only as the surface for imagery, but as a painting and sculpting material - She has developed many techniques that degrade the paper and express destructive forces at work. While throughout her life she has been involved with family and community work, she has shifted her focus to global humanitarian and environmental affairs. Recent work has her becoming more of an activist than a studio artist - sometimes supported by art works and sometimes projecting a vision in social situations. Sandy Bleifer uses paper and figurative imagery to evoke social and political issues. Her work engages the audience via interactions with freestanding and wall hung sculptural installations. Her intention has been to bring about far reaching social change by further involving the viewer/participant through adjunct programming as well as contemplation of the artwork. Using photographic documentation, she traversed the world of urban redevelopment to preserve neighborhoods and architectural features of historical and cultural significance.

In this collection of nine essays some of the preeminent art historians in the United States consider the relationship between art and craft, between the creative idea and its realization, in Renaissance and Baroque Italy. The essays, all previously unpublished, are devoted to the pictorial arts and are accompanied by nearly 150 illustrations. Examining works by such artists as Michelangelo, Titian, Volterrano, Giovanni di Paolo, and Annibale Carracci (along with aspects of the artists' creative processes, work habits, and aesthetic convictions), the essayists explore the ways in which art was conceived and produced at a time when collaboration with pupils, assistants, or independent masters was an accepted part of the artistic process. The consensus of the contributors amounts to a revision, or at least a qualification, of Bernard Berenson's interpretation of the emergent Renaissance ideal of individual "genius" as a measure of original artistic achievement: we must accord greater influence to the collaborative, appropriative conventions and practices of the craft workshop, which persisted into and beyond the Renaissance from its origins in the Middle Ages. Consequently, we must acknowledge the sometimes rather ordinary beginnings of some of the world's great works of art--an admission, say the contributors, that will open new avenues of study and enhance our understanding of the complex connections between invention and execution. Town and Country 1517 - 1550
History is very good at recording wars, disasters and scandals, but does not usually record the ordinary details, such as how people went grocery shopping, everyday dramas and how the table was set for dinner. Little details like these are usually lost to the ravages of time and neglect, thought too unimportant and mundane to record. However, that is exactly what this collection of woodcuts focuses on, the scenes of the everyday lives in the town and country people in southern Germany in the early 16th century. These woodcuts provide a glimpse into the unrecorded days and lives of the people, from church festivals, shopping at the markets, wedding processions, interior scenes, and hunting trips to the Emperor coming to town, from the sacred to the profane, all in crisp black and white lines.

Farewell To Canada presents a unique, visual perspective on the end of an era of British Imperial history. Between 1867 and 1871, the soldier/artist William Ogle Carlile of Britain's Royal Regiment of Artillery graphically documented a time when a new country, the Dominion of Canada, faced the threat of invasion from the United States of America. At the same time, the British Army was about to leave the defence of the young nation in the hands of the Canadian Militia and a newly raised permanent force. The paintings, drawings and cartoon sketches of Lieutenant Carlile were published in news magazines of the day and in his own book of recollections of his years in Canada. For the first time, more than thirty of Carlile's works have been collected together here and serve as witness to a time during which Canada took the first tentative steps toward complete military self-sufficiency on her long path toward greater independence from Great Britain and the British Empire.Maps, illustrations, source notes, appendices, bibliography, index.

The sources range from the letters of Jonathan Swift in the eighteenth century regarding the conservation of funerary monuments in St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin to a 2010 essay on the impact of the sexuality of the modern Irish artist, Gerard Dillon on his practice. While many of the earlier sources refer to art produced in the colonial period, those of the twentieth and twenty-first century relate to art produced in an independent Ireland and in the newly created Northern Ireland. In recent years there has been a dramatic upsurge in research and publishing on Irish art that has produced new writings and new approaches which has furthered the rediscovery of forgotten or overlooked texts. This anthology aims to make such texts easily available to the general reader, the student or teacher. While well-known names in Irish art from Jack B. Yeats to Alice Maher feature in this anthology, the editors also offer commentary from international voices such as Gustave Courbet, Clement Greenberg, Lucy Lippard and Thomas McEvilley. The diversity and broad chronological range of texts offer unique and exceptional insights into the issues and ideas that influenced the production and responses to art in Ireland.
Animal Iconography in the Archaeological Record
Animals pervade our lives, both today and in the past. From the smallest bug through pets and agricultural animals to elephants and blue whales, the animals themselves, animal-derived products and representations of animals can be found everywhere in our daily lives. This book focuses on the representations of animals in the past: How were animals represented in iconography, and how is the craftsperson interpreting animals within his or her own cultural context? What do the representations tell us about the role and function of both animals and the representations themselves? A series of papers explore these questions through images of animals. This is, for example, done by using technologies like 3D models to emphasize the dimensionality of objects, or through theoretical and interdisciplinary approaches that examine the intersection of the human and the animal. The papers challenge the notion of animals purely as objects, instead focusing on the many ways in which humans and animals interact. The importance of animals in all aspects of our lives means that the study of human-animal relations is an extremely relevant one both in the past and today. The papers take us on a journey through time and space, demonstrating exactly this relevance. Starting in the Neolithic and ending in the Medieval period, from the Mediterranean and Northern Europe through Siberia and the Baltic to the other side of the world in Australia, we have the privilege of encountering lions, horses, dogs, monkeys, birds, kangaroos and octopuses, among many other wonderful creatures. The book is an important and exciting contribution to the study of human-animal relations. It should be of interest to anyone working on this topic and the interpretation of images - both modern and ancient.

The Battle of Tsu-shima
TRANSLATOR'S PREFACEThe following account of the battle of Tsu-shima, fought on 27th May 1905, is a translation of the narrative of Captain Vladimir Semenoff, a Russian naval officer who was on board the flag-ship (Knyaz Suvoroff) during the engagement. It is of more than usual interest, as the writer had previously served in the Cesarevitch at Port Arthur, and had taken part in the disastrous sally from that port on 10th August 1904.At the great battle of which he now relates his experiences, he was present in an unofficial capacity, which gave him unlimited opportunity for observation. Moreover, the fact of his being able to make a series of notes at the time (till too seriously wounded) puts an additional stamp of reality on to his already most graphic account.It should be remembered that the Russian Baltic fleet-Russia's final and supreme appeal to the God of Battles-left Cronstadt for the Far East on 11th September 1904, and during all the long months till the following May was slowly making its way, vi璽 the Cape of Good Hope, to Japanese waters. The difficulties encountered during that prolonged voyage were enormous. The nerves of officers and men, who constantly apprehended attempts to destroy the fleet, were in a continual state of tension: news of the outside world and especially of events in the Far East was practically unobtainable: and yet officers and men, despite the additional disadvantage of having to take their ships into action after these many months at sea, fearlessly entered into an engagement which they knew meant death, and fought their ships with a self-devotion and courage which has earned for them the admiration of the world.Admiral Togo-flying his flag on the Mikasa-awaited the enemy in Japanese waters. His fleet, which, since the fall of Port Arthur on 2nd January 1905, had been relieved of its blockading duties, had spent the intervening months in repairing damage and bringing itself up to the highest state of preparation in expectation of the coming of the Baltic fleet. To a nation like ourselves, whose first line of defence is the Navy, I venture to think that these pages will give food for thought, as, besides enabling the reader to see the paralysing and awful effect of high explosives thrown on board a modern battleship in action, they supply us with a picture of what a losing engagement means to those who lose.When first I took up the original volume I read it merely with a view to extracting information re fire effect, gun power, weather conditions, formations, and other factors complementary to the result of the battle. But the narrative appeared so realistic that the thought occurred to me to place the following translation before the public.The speed maintained by the opposing fleets during the battle is shown in the diagram attached. Dates have been expressed according to the English calendar (which is thirteen days in advance of the Russian)-otherwise the writer's own words and colloquial style have, as far as possible, been faithfully adhered to, to the detriment of literary style in translating.It may be mentioned that this narrative comes as a supplement to the very interesting account by Politovsky of the voyage of the Baltic fleet to the Far East-recently translated by Major Godfrey and published by John Murray under the title "From Libau to Tsu-shima."Politovsky went down in the Suvoroff, and his story ends with the arrival of the fleet at Shanghai on 23rd May, the date on which he posted his last letter to Russia. The following narrative commences on 25th May, as the fleet swung out of Shanghai to meet its destiny.A. B. L.7th November 1906.
Public Art and Architecture in New Mexico, 1933-1943 (Softcover)
Do you like to go treasure hunting in obvious or out of the way places? Do you like to view fine art in galleries large and small? This book will give you directions to New Mexico's amazing New Deal treasures and to buildings and bridges, murals and sculptures, paintings and people who made them. They are not necessarily in the most obvious places, and yet many are in places that one routinely visits. They have been patiently waiting in our cities, our villages, our parks, rarely witnessed as being "treasures." They were constructed perhaps even by your own artistic ancestors. This book is full of clues. Go sleuthing! Growing up in Portales, New Mexico, Kathryn Akers Flynn lived in an area with a New Deal courthouse, a New Deal post office, and New Deal schools. She worked at the local swimming pool and partied in the city park, both built during the Depression era. In high school she was a cheerleader on 1930s football fields for onlookers in Work Progress Administration bleachers and camped out at a nearby Civilian Conservation Corps created park and lake. She never knew any of these structures were fashioned by the New Deal, nor did she notice the New Deal treasures in Salt Lake City while at the University of Utah where she received her Bachelor's Degree or the New Deal structures in Carbondale, Illinois where she earned her Master's Degree at Southern Illinois University. Returning to New Mexico, she had a career in the state health and mental health administration that included directorship of Carrie Tingley Hospital, a New Deal facility with many public art treasures. It wasn't until she became Deputy Secretary of State of New Mexico that she realized what was around her. As a result she went on to edit three editions of the "New Mexico Blue Book" featuring information about New Deal creations all over the state. This book presents the history and whereabouts of many such treasures found since compiling an earlier book, "Treasures on New Mexico Trails," and another that focuses on New Deal programs nationwide, "The New Deal: A 75th Anniversary Celebration." She also assisted with the compilation of "A More Abundant Life, New Deal Artists and Public Art in New Mexico" by Jacqueline Hoefer, also from Sunstone Press and an apt companion for "Public Art and Architecture in New Mexico." She was instrumental in creating the National New Deal Preservation Association, and now serves as Executive Director.
Baroque Between the Wars
Baroque between the Wars is a fascinating account of the arts in the twenties and thirties.
