The Last Navigator
As a young man piloting a small sailboat across the Pacific, Steve Thomas developed a fascination with ancient methods of navigation. Bunker
For his second book with Hartmann Books, Vincenzo Pagliuca continues his visual-documentary research on the archetypal images of dwelling, that began with his 'm籀nos' series. This time he explores the bunkers of the Vallo Alpino, a network of fortifications designed by the fascist regime in the late 1930s to protect Italy's northern border, which remained under military control until 1993. Pagliuca focuses on the structures still scattered throughout South Tyrol, where the construction of about 300 bunkers was completed with an unprecedented use of resources. The monolithic architectures thus emerge from oblivion. His images spark the viewers' interest in distinctive camouflage methods and the relationships the buildings have developed over the decades with their natural and social surroundings. The bunkers represent a difficult legacy, recalling a dramatic historical period in Central Europe, marked by nationalist ideology and the inability to resolve conflicts through peaceful means -- an era we thought had long since passed... Pagliuca's photographic practice, through a serial approach, focuses on the landscape and human intervention on the land, with a particular interest in the theme of the house and dwelling. His work has been exhibited and published internationally. Bunker is his third book. Born in 1980, he lives and works in Brescia.
Buchenwald
Between 2017 and 2024, the Leipzig-based photographer Christian Rothe (born 1986) explored the vast area of the former concentration camp Buchenwald on the Ettersberg near Weimar, using his analog large-format camera. Ruins, barely discernible foundations, stairs, fences and paths appear as topographical scars and signs in the impenetrable thicket. What began as a careful and tentative exploration gradually evolved into an intensive search for traces of history obscured by nature. The black and white photographs are complemented by literary excerpts from internationally renowned novels of former concentration camp inmates: Bruno Apitz's Naked Among Wolves, Imre Kert矇sz's Fatelessness and Jorge Sempr繳n's What a Beautiful Sunday. Essays by curator Andrea Karle, Chairman of the World Council of Churches, Heinrich Bedford-Strohm and editor G羹nter Jeschonnek on Christian Rothe's visual language, the significance of contemporary remembrance culture and commemoration complement the examination of the rupture of civilisation and the terror of National Socialism in the immediate vicinity of the town of classicism and great German poets and thinkers. The book marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp by the US Army on 11 April 1945.

The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine forced the Potsdam based photographer Frank Gaudlitz to add a new chapter to his long-term project on the development of post-Soviet Russian society, which he has been following since 1988. In 2022/23, he travelled to the former Soviet republics of Moldova, Georgia and Armenia, which were affected by large refugee movements and now offer refuge to Ukrainians and Russians alike as independent nations. Gaudlitz portrayed people there who had to, or wanted to, leave their homeland with an uncertain future. He also asked them about their fates and hopes. The intensive portraits and conversations are processed into an impressive document of this time/chronicle in this book. The emphatic, true-to-life photographs tell of improvisation as a permanent condition, the discrepancy between social promises and the everyday reality of refugees in times of war.
Archipelagos of Resistance
For her series Archipelagos of Resistance, Johanna Diehl travelled to Sarajevo several times between 2021 and 2024 and photographed places and spaces in which exhibitions, theatre productions, film festivals and concerts took place in the 1990s. During the Bosnian war and the siege of the city, many were used as media centres, such as the Hotel Holiday Inn or the BHRT Building (Bosnia & Herzegovina Radio & Television Building). Despite life-threatening circumstances, cultural life took place in these 'archipelagos of resistance' scattered across Sarajevo. They enabled the world to witness life in the besieged city. Her pictures illustrate the power and importance of cultural work, especially in war zones and times of crisis. With this series and her previous work, she investigates the cultural identity of contemporary Europe. This book sheds an entirely different light on the question of the life-affirming, vital importance of culture and art in times of budget cuts! The project was created as part of an Ifa-touring exhibition.
