Tao Ho (1936-2019) —a renowned Hong Kong architect and cultural practitioner. He was trained among the pioneers of the Modern Architectural Movement, and was heavily influenced by the principles and spirits of the Bauhaus. He was a polymath who engaged in a wide array of cultural endeavors from urban planning, architectural design, and graphic design, to painting, sculpture, Eastern and Western philosophy and cosmic science.

Through seven years of organisation and in-depth research into a vast collection of previously unpublished design manuscripts, photographs, and archival materials, architectural historian Charles Lai has reconstructed Tao Ho's multifaceted life and its connection with the development of Hong Kong's architecture, art, and cultural landscape, and documented a pivotal chapter in Hong Kong's cultural history and architectural design.

A graduate of Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, Tao Ho studied under Modernist masters such as Walter Gropius and Joseph Sert. His architectural training was profoundly shaped by Bauhaus pedagogy, and his work encompassed urban planning, architecture, graphic design, painting, sculpture, and even philosophy and science. With "Order in Chaos" as his core philosophy, he aimed to translate Hong Kong's hybridity and grassroots culture into a unique design language. He designed the Hong Kong Arts Centre and was one of the designers of the HKSAR emblem. He was also among the first architects to practice in mainland China after the economic reform and opening-up.

From his return to Hong Kong from the US in 1964 until his unfortunate stroke in 2002, Tao Ho's professional life spanned fifty years. His extensive body of work—including designs, theoretical ideas, and artistic creations—continues to profoundly influence Hong Kong's urban landscape and culture today as both experiments and practice. By reorganising and re-examining Tao Ho's precious archived legacy, this book aims to reconstruct his intellectual lineage and highlight his standing and contributions to Hong Kong and international architectural history.
