Sweetening the Globe: Tainan’s Sugar Heritage at Soulangh and Tsung-yeh International Artist VillagesSugar is deeply rooted in Tainan's history and culture. From the landscapes of salt pans along the coast of the Greater Beimen Area to sugar refinery chimneys across the plains, sugar represents more than a commodity. It has developed into a cultural icon that embodies the land, its people, history, and sentiments. The development of Soulangh and Tsung-yeh International Artist Villages has embraced the transformation of sugar, evolving from sugar refineries into cultural parks. The historical significance of sugar now acts as energy, fueling artistic creations.Soulangh Cultural Park, once Taiwan's first modern sugar refinery, not only marks the rise of Taiwan's sugar industry but also preserves collective memories of migration, farming, daily life, and family ties. Over the past 13 years, Soulangh International Artist Village has held annual international open calls to select resident artists, collaboratively turning stories of this land into contemporary art. This year, with the theme of "sugar," artists created layered narratives exploring food, the body, architecture, and life experiences. Art serves as a voice that reflects the profundity of history. The century-old sugar refinery complex, home to Tsung-yeh International Artist Village, also draws creativity from around the world through its Japanese architectural style, open spaces, and cultural diversity. Programs such as Artist-in-Residence, exhibitions, research, and exchanges promote the growth of art here, bringing global artists to Tainan.International art exchange has played a vital role in both artist villages. This year, Soulangh collaborated with cultural institutions from Slovakia, South Korea, the Netherlands, and Austria. Several international artists incorporated the local landscape, physical experience, folk tale, and history of Tainan into their creations in the form of video, sculpture, sound, and installation, leading viewers to perceive the resonance between local and global communities. Resident artists selected through annual open calls reinterpreted Siraya culture, sugar railway scenery, and urban-rural transformation through in-depth fieldwork. They used oyster shells, reclaimed timber, sugarcane bagasse, historic photographs, and old items collected from the Heritage Materials Vault, all of which have a strong sense of time and locality. These works manifest the artists' collective reflections on the history of the sugar industry in the post-colonial era from a contemporary perspective. The 2025 open call for Tsung-yeh International Artist Village invited artists worldwide to submit interdisciplinary proposals centered on Tainan's hydrology, topography, biodiversity, and culture. Ultimately, six groups of artists represented the contemporary landscape of Tainan through various media, including video, writing, space installation, and natural materials. Some reflected on declining industries; others explored the connection between humanity and nature; and some listened for the subtle rhythms of faith coexisting within the city. They rediscovered Tainan from unique perspectives and translated their feelings into an artistic language that is visible, experiential, and quietly resonant. What Soulangh and Tsung-yeh International Artist Villages accomplished this year goes beyond serving as centers for the arts. They act as hubs where people from around the world meet, appreciate each other’s cultures, and inspire one another. Artists not only create works here but also enrich the city’s identity.Looking ahead, we will persist in our commitment to "fostering local culture and promoting international exchange." By collaborating closely with global partners, we aim to support more artists who use Tainan as a platform to showcase their views of the world, explore their identities, and ensure that this city—full of stories and cherished memories—continues to make steady, reliable progress in this era.
