The Little Book of Therapeutic Rationality

Windy,Dryden  著
Ingram 出版
2022/01/31 出版

The Little Book of Therapeutic Rationality provides 300 quotations to help people improve their mental health in small 'bite-sized' chunks. The book is divided into four parts. The first part focuses on what Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) has to contribute to mental well-being. The second part provides brief reflections on common emotional problems and how they can be addressed. The third part focuses on the therapeutic change process and provides encouragement to people who have embarked on this process to stay the course. The final part of the book covers a variety of general issues pertaining to good mental health. It is the author's hope that the book will be helpful to both clients in therapy and people engaged in some form of therapeutic self-help.

COVID-19 Outbreak and Beyond

Paolo,Roma  著
Ingram 出版
2022/01/31 出版

The COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed our lifestyle when, on 30 January 2020, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus disease outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. Since then, many governments have introduced unprecedented containment measures, hoping to slow the spread of the virus. International research suggests that both the pandemic and the related protective measures, such as lockdown, curfews, and social distancing, are having a profound impact on the mental health of the population. Among the most commonly observed psychological effects, there are high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic symptoms, along with boredom and frustration. At the same time, the behavioral response of the population is of paramount importance to successfully contain the outbreak, creating a vicious circle in which the psychological distress impacts the willingness to comply with the protective measures, which, in turn, if prolonged, could exacerbate the population's distress. This book includes: i) original studies on the worldwide psychological and behavioral impact of COVID-19 on targeted individuals (e.g., parents, social workers, patients affected by physical and mental disorders); ii) studies exploring the effect of COVID-19 using advanced statistical and methodological techniques (e.g., machine learning technologies); iii) research on practical applications that could help identify persons at risk, mitigate the negative effects of this situation, and offer insights to policymakers to manage the pandemic are also highly welcomed.

Conducting Interviews with Child Victims of Abuse and Witnesses of Crime

Mireille,Cyr  著
Routledge 出版
2022/01/31 出版

This book is a practical and thoughtful guide for the forensic interview of children, presenting a synthesis of the empirical and theoretical knowledge necessary to understand the account of child victims of abuse or witnesses of crime. It is a complex task to interview children who are suspected of being abused in order to gather their stories, requiring the mastery of many skills and knowledge. This book is a practical one in that constant links are made between the results of the research and their relevance for the interventions made when interviewing child victims of abuse or witnesses of crime and in understanding their accounts. This book also presents in a detailed and concrete way the revised version of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD-R) Protocol, a forensic structured interview guide empirically supported by numerous studies carried out in different countries. The step-by-step explanations are illustrated with a verbatim interview with a child, as well as other tools to help the interviewer to prepare and handle an efficient and supportive interview. Conducting Interviews with Child Victims of Abuse and Witnesses of Crime is essential reading for stakeholders in the justice, social and health systems as well as anyone likely to receive allegations from children such as educators or daycare staff. Although the NICHD-R Protocol is intended for forensic interviewers, the science behind its development and application is relevant to all professionals working with children.

Depression

Paul,Gilbert  著
Ingram 出版
2022/01/26 出版

Regarded as a classic when it was first published in 1984, Depression: From Psychology to Brain State provides historical insight into some of the origins of the evolutionary and biopsychosocial approaches behind compassion focused therapy. It highlights how the many textures of depressed brain states can be understood as a result of interacting with multiple biological psychological social processes. Consequently, to understand and treat depression required insight into the interactions between these processes. Hence, the book covers the controversies over diagnosis, and how different models such as psychodynamic, behavioural, and cognitive therapies conceptualise depression. The last two integrative chapters address the brain's evolved defences to threat such as helplessness, attachment loss and search defeat. These chapters also highlight and show how mental states are often discontinuous and state switches can be due to nonlinear processes. This reissue contains a new preface, written by the author, which reflects on more decent developments.Reviews for first issue"...it is superb! It is certainly one of the most comprehensive and scholar books on depression that I have seen. It should be a major force in shaping the thinking about depression, as well as research, for years to come." Prof Aaron T Beck"...the book reviews a wealth of animal and human research findings especially from ethology, conditioning, and helplessness paradigms. For this alone it will be an important source book for psychologists and psychiatrists whether they are interested in research or clinical work with depression. Gilbert has provided a book which is both challenging and engaging." - Prof Mark Williams

The Frenzied Dance of Art and Violence

Ingram 出版
2022/01/19 出版

Some artists have an inclination towards violence, with art helping to mitigate or redirect their destructive energy. For others, their art helps them gain power over or make sense of violent environs. Finally, for some violent perpetrators, art simply mirrors and even perpetuates their psychopathic cycles. Through it all, The Frenzied Dance of Art and Violence explores - and seeks to understand - these interrelated paths of destruction and creation. To inform this dynamic, Dr. David E. Gussak relies on various psychological and sociological perspectives of violence and aggression. Beginning with brief psychobiographies of violent artists, such as Caravaggio, Cellini, Pollock, and Dali, and those whose work emerged from violence, such as Goya, Beckmann, Picasso, and Vann Nath, among others, Gussak illustrates a potent dual nature of art-making: as a way to mitigate violent inclinations and as a tool to regain control amidst turmoil. From here, the book provides an in-depth look at our society's fascination with the products of violent perpetrators in the form of murderabilia, as the art of serial killers such as Gacy, Manson, and Rolling finds its way to art collections, feeding into perpetrators' narcissism and psychopathy. The book concludes with Gussak's reflections from his thirty years as an art therapist working with violent offenders on how art can be used as a therapeutic tool to assuage violence and aggression and promote peace in volatile situations. The Frenzied Dance of Art and Violence is a far-reaching and thought-provoking examination of the competing and complex impulses motivating artwork and those who make it.

Buddhist Psychotherapy

Hyunsoo,Jeon  著
Springer 出版
2022/01/05 出版

This book explores how to utilize Buddhism in psychotherapy and how Buddhism itself acts as a form of psychotherapy, using Buddhism practices as a lens for universal truth and wisdom rather than as aspects of a religion. Based on the author's over 30 years of study and practice with early Buddhism and his experiences of Buddhism with his patients, the book outlines a new form of psychotherapy incorporating three Buddhist principles: the properties of the body and mind, the principle of world's movement, and living with wisdom. This technique provides a unique perspective on mental health and offers new approaches for clinicians and researchers to effectively addressing mental health and well-being.

The Virtues in Psychiatric Practice

Ingram 出版
2022/01/05 出版

There is growing recognition of the value dimension in psychiatric practice, from the contributions of positive psychology, of documenting the role of virtues in human flourishing and in the medical practice. However, the place of virtues in psychiatric treatment remains largely unexplored. How does a need for virtues fit into the processes of diagnosis, formulation, and treatment? What patient problems and factors should influence the therapist to promote forgiveness, gratitude, humility, or accountability? What is the relationship between the therapist's and the patient's virtues? What is the relevance of religious or spiritual resources to the formation of virtue? How does the cultivation of a particular virtue relate to psychodynamic, behavioral, existential, or spiritual approaches? What ethical questions does it raise, and what are its implications for psychiatric education? The Virtues in Psychiatric Practice explores the role of the virtues in promoting human flourishing within the context of psychiatric practice. Chapters uses case examples to consider the incentives of fostering particular virtues; the place of this approach among psychodynamic, behavioral, existential, or spiritual approaches; and the relationship between the therapist's and the patient's values. Virtues highlighted include forgiveness, gratitude, accountability, self-transcendence, defiance, humility, compassion, love, and practical wisdom. This discussion is organized according to four basic capacities relevant to moral enhancement - self-control, niceness, intelligence, and positivity - which correspond to the four cardinal virtues according to Plato and Aquinas - temperance, justice, prudence, and courage. Edited by psychiatrist and scholar John R. Peteet and written for psychiatrists, psychologists, and medical ethicists, this book will connect recent scientific research on virtue with clinical practice. It therefore aims to give readers a fuller appreciation of the importance of virtue in the therapeutic encounter, a clearer understanding of clinical indications for focusing on particular virtues, and enhanced practical ways of promoting human growth.

Psychology of the Ark of the Covenant

Ingram 出版
2021/12/24 出版

It is said in the Exodus that the people left Egypt and were prepared during their pilgrimage in the desert of life. They arrived and stayed at the base of the mountain to gain experience and raise their consciousness and form. At that time, by precession of the Equinoxes, the Sun began its transit in the constellation of Aries and all the people were instructed to abolish the ancient customs of the Age of Taurus. Unfortunately, they built a "golden calf", that is, they preferred the old habits and customs. Popularly, the Ark of the Covenant served to remind the people that God was present among them. It was also a memorial for Israel's descendants to know what God had done in the past with their parents. However, the Ark of the Covenant had no power; it was the representation of human spiritual development. When the people thought of the Ark, they remembered God, His glory, His commandments, and His provision. Thus came the "legend of the Lost Ark". In psychological and biblical ways, the Ark of the Covenant is a set of Archetypes that contain other archetypes: the Golden Vessel of Manna, the Rod of Aaron, and the Tablets of the Law that were delivered to Moses. By analogy, we have the Nature of the Psyche with its two layers: the Personal Unconscious and the Collective Unconscious, because they represent the psychic part of the human system, in its highest spiritual development. By psychological and biological ways, the Ark of the Covenant is a set of Archetypes composed of the Mind, Brain-spinal System and the Nature of the Psyche. However, in an attempt to explain this set of Archetypes should bring to light their contents; only when this task is accomplished, i.e., only when consciousness becomes sufficiently familiar with the unconscious processes reflected in the anima and animus, would the archetypes of the Ark of the Covenant and their processes be perceived as a simple function.

Geriatric Psychotherapy

Ingram 出版
2021/12/24 出版

Based on my professional assessment of the present state of theory and practice in psychotherapy as relates to the care and counseling of the post-retirement population in America, I have over the last few years concentrated much of my research and publishing in the field of geriatric psychotherapy. It is my conviction that the leading schools of psychotherapy, both classical and modern, have too quickly terminated their application and relevance to the growing number of post-retired individuals in need of pastoral care and counseling. The classical schools, it is understandable, were developed during a time when individuals did not live much beyond retirement age. The longevity of western populations during the time of Freud, Adler, Jung, and Frankl were not much beyond 65 years of age and even from Erikson the Sullivan, few Americans lived beyond 68 years with a small exceptional percentage. The development of psychotherapeutic theory and practice, therefore, addressed childhood, adolescent, young adulthood and family life, ending by and large with retirement. Even Erikson failed to move substantially into the post-retirement years and the psychopathology of the elderly. However, it is my belief based on nearly 50 years of study, research, and teaching that even the modern schools - Horney, Klein, Perls, Berne, Maslow, Rogers, Fromm, Ellis, and Beck - have fallen victim to the inclination to too quickly terminate their theory and practice to these childhood-to-retirement categories and therefore, by default, have more or less failed to substantially address the post-retirement population which is rapidly and exponentially expanding. Indeed, whereas 50 years ago one expected to live a year or two beyond retirement, today a massive number of individuals living in western societies are living 20 to 30 years beyond retirement.

Dynamic Pathways to Recovery from Alcohol Use Disorder

Ingram 出版
2021/12/23 出版

Alcohol use disorder is by far the most prevalent substance use disorder in the general population and is a major contributor to disease worldwide. Recovery from the disorder is a dynamic process of change, and individuals take many different routes to resolve their alcohol problems and seek to achieve a life worth living. Total abstention is not the only solution and robust recovery involves more than changing drinking practices. This volume brings together multidisciplinary research on recovery processes, contexts, and outcomes as well as new ideas about the multiple pathways involved. Experts chart the individual, social, contextual, community, economic, regulatory, policy, and structural influences that are vital to understanding alcohol use disorder and recovery. The book recommends new approaches to conceptualizing and assessing recovery alongside new avenues for research, community engagement, and policy that constitute a major shift in the practice and policy landscape.

The Oxford Handbook of Traumatic Stress Disorders

J Gayle,Beck  著
Ingram 出版
2021/12/22 出版

The experience of traumatic events is a near-universal, albeit unfortunate, part of the human experience. Given how many individuals are exposed to trauma, it is interesting to question why some individuals are resilient in the face of trauma while others go on to develop chronic post-traumatic stress. Throughout the relatively brief history of the psychological study of trauma, a number of themes have consistently emerged; many of these themes remain essential elements within our current study of traumatic stress disorders, as summarized within this volume. The Oxford Handbook of Traumatic Stress Disorders addresses the current landscape of research and clinical knowledge surrounding traumatic stress disorders. Bringing together a group of highly-regarded experts, this volume is divided into six sections, together summarizing the current state of knowledge about 1) classification and phenomenology, 2) epidemiology and special populations, 3) contributions from theory, 4) assessment, 5) prevention and early intervention efforts, and 6) treatment of individuals with post-trauma mental health symptoms. Throughout the volume, attention is paid to identifying current controversies in the literature and highlighting directions that hold promise for future work. In this new second edition, experts on traumatic stress contribute chapters on topics spanning classification, epidemiology and special populations, theory, assessment, prevention/early intervention, treatment, and dissemination and treatment. This expanded, updated volume provides research updates and highlights areas that need continued clarification through additional research. With new chapters on adverse childhood experiences, suicide following the experience of trauma, and evidence-based treatments, the second edition provides an up-to-date and valuable resource for clinicians and investigators with interest in traumatic stress disorders.

Families and Individuals Living with Trauma

Palgrave M 出版
2021/12/20 出版

This book is an accessible guide for understanding and treating psychological trauma. Drawing on Dr. Woodcock's extensive experience and the latest research, it offers an approach that integrates systemic therapy and psychoanalytic perspectives through the lens of attachment theory. The book's chapters cover topics such as trauma and pain; traumatic death; how to respond when disaster strikes; social systems that promote attachment versus systems that create trauma; and how to look after ourselves as therapists, family, and friends of trauma survivors. Because no single therapeutic paradigm is sufficient to capture the complexity of trauma, the book brings together a wide set of therapeutic traditions and shows in detail how to apply a variety of treatment approaches, gathered from psychoanalytic, cognitive behavioral, intersubjective, mindfulness, and body psychotherapy traditions, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). The book's vignettes and casestudies provide clear illustrations of the theory outlined and demonstrate the use of interventions in a range of settings. It will appeal to qualified and training practitioners in the clinical and care professions and researchers from across the psychological sciences with an interest in trauma, as well as to a more general readership affected by issues relating to trauma.

CBT for College Students with ADHD

Springer 出版

This book provides an overview of the ACCESS program, a mental health program that has been developed and tested as an efficacious treatment for college students with ADHD. This program is at the cutting edge of clinical research, incorporating treatment strategies that allow for dissemination in real world settings in order to effectively assist college students experiencing difficulties in their academic, personal, social, and emotional functioning. As cognitive behavioral approaches have proved to be the most successful psychological treatments to date, the techniques in this volume follow that model in a detailed and nuanced fashion. The authors provide a week by week breakdown of the program, supplemented by handouts and worksheets designed to facilitate better understanding of the areas targeted by the program. Filling a notable gap in research addressing the ADHD college student population, CBT for College Students with ADHD is a crucial resource for campus mental health practitioners as well as a broad range of clinicians dealing with emerging adults.

The Damaged Self

2021/11/23 出版

The psychopathology of a diminished life producing a mental injury is characterized by the downward spiral in an individual's self-concept (self-image and self-esteem) brought on by a diminished opinion of one's self resulting from negative interpersonal experiences especially from childhood. This approach is based on the work of Harry Stack Sullivan, M.D., and is explored within the context of the traditional orientation of psychoanalysis developed by Sigmund Freud, M.D. A damaged self is evidenced in a variety of personality disorders described in the DSM-5 and is treatable using a variety of psychotherapeutic modalities of intervention which will be explored here. The reconstituting of a healthy self-concept is the assessment and treatment focus employed in the use of both Sullivan's Interpersonal Psychiatry and Freud's Psychodynamic Psychoanalysis. A comprehensive understanding of the concept of the self is integrated into this psychopathological disorder incorporating a range of diagnostic and treatment protocols with special use of Carl Rogers' concept of unconditional positive regard as well as Abraham Maslow's concept of self-actualization. Rogers' extensive development of the theory of the self-concept is complimented with Maslow's development of the self-actualized personality. Both Rogers and Maslow concurred with Sullivan in the conviction that the human psyche has implicit within it the capacity, if nurtured and not stifled, to reach a level of cognitive integration of the personality such that the individual can lead a productive and meaningful life. Alfred Adler's contribution to the discussion of the relationship between negative child-rearing practices and the development of mental disorders in early childhood will be carefully considered in our attempt to understand human nature's drive towards self-actualization in the face of the experience of inferiority. Erik Erikson's concept of personal identify in the maturation of the child is linked to the work of Charles Horton Cooley (the looking-glass self) and George Herbert Mead (the social self) which provides the matrix within which the psychodynamic social interactive development of the self-concept is understood. A significant component of this research will incorporate the pioneering work in child psychotherapy developed by Anna Freud, Karen Horney, and Melanie Klein within the context of classical psychoanalytic theory and constructs. In this study, we will begin with an overview of the concept of self (image and esteem) wherein damage to the individual self-concept presented and manifested as a mental injury in child development is explicated. Then we will summarize each theorist's approach by providing an overview of each theorist's concept of "the self" and suggest ways in which their approach addresses the psychopathological developments occurring in a damaged or diminished self-concept (image and esteem).

Lulu.com 出版
2021/11/22 出版

Depression, suffering from depression what is it? All my life in one form or another I have suffered from depression. I don't know how to begin this book, so I'm just going to try to do my best. I know that this was not going to be easy, my mind is going to turmoil, and I am lost for words. As I am typing this I am suffering from depression, you could say there is a voice inside my head speaking to me, telling me not to write down what I am saying, but I'm going try my best to get as much information as I can. It's hard to talk about depression most people try to ignore it's and hope it will go away but that never happens, I am trying to write but the depression is slowing me down it's holding me back I'm full of despair. Most of this is not going to make sense to some people especially if you don't suffer from Depression. So, I'm going try to explain what I am going through, what I am suffering from. all is not well the thoughts in my head are of Suicide and ending my suffering. It's not easy writing down which one is thinking while suffering from depression at the same time. I just want to end everything; I don't want to go on any longer. I don't feel That I have the strength to deal with life any longer, I just want to give up. I don't feel like there's anything to live for, I just want to give up.
