Innovating Counseling for Self- And Career Construction
This book sets out to provide context for innovating counseling for self- and career construction. It gives readers insight into the theory underlying an innovative, integrative qualitative-quantitative approach to career counseling.Three key ideas recur throughout the book. First, the idea of not dispensing "advice" to people--instead, enabling them to advise themselves. Second, the idea of listening for instead of to people's stories to help them choose and construct careers and themselves and shape their career identities. Third, the idea of helping people connect what they know about themselves consciously with what they are aware of subconsciously. The book confronts some of the main challenges posed by Work 4.0 on the workplace but also foreshadows the imminent advent of Work 5.0. It endeavors to promote career counselors' ability to help people "thrive" at a time when many speculate that work itself is at risk, occupational contexts no longer "hold" workers in the way they used to, and the coronavirus pandemic is disrupting the workplace.

The Intersection of Trauma and Disaster Behavioral Health
This contributed volume examines the intersection of trauma and disaster behavioral health from a lifespan perspective, filling a critical gap in the literature on disaster mental health research. In the chapters, the contributors evaluate behavioral data of adults exposed to various environmental events in both the United States (i.e., the 2017 Hurricanes Irma in Florida and Harvey in Houston) and abroad (i.e., missile fire in the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict). Contributors also suggest future directions, practices, and policies for trauma and disaster response. The three parts of the book provide an overview of disaster behavioral health across the lifespan, propose practical applications of research theories to psychosocial problems resulting from disasters and trauma, and evaluate disaster and trauma interventions from a macro-level perspective. Topics explored among the chapters include: Integrating Trauma-Informed Principles into Disaster Behavioral Health Targeting Older Adults Cultural Competence and Disaster Mental Health When Disasters Strike: Navigating the Challenges of "Sudden Science" Frameworks of Recovery: Health Caught at the Intersection of Housing, Education, and Employment Opportunities After Hurricane Katrina Substance Use Issues and Behavioral Health After a Disaster Psychosocial Recovery After Natural Disaster: International Advocacy, Policy, and RecommendationsThe Intersection of Trauma and Disaster Behavioral Health is a vital resource for researchers whose expertise covers the domains of trauma, health and wellness, and natural and technological disasters. The book also is a useful supplement to graduate courses in psychology, sociology, social work, disaster science, human ecology, and public health.
Treatment Planning with Choice Theory and Reality Therapy
Choice Theory/Reality Therapy Treatment Planning describes how to write a theory-driven treatment plan, compatible with person-centered recovery planning principles and satisfy the expectations of insurance companies. Designed to be a primer for mental health practitioners desiring from a choice theory /reality therapy perspective, the author describes how to conceptualize a case study from a choice theory lens and how to implement a treatment plan using reality therapy. Formerly entitled, Treatment Planning from a Reality Therapy Perspective, this third edition includes three new chapters, including one on case conceptualization, integrating choice theory /reality therapy with person-centered recovery planning, and a case study example with a case conceptualization, treatment plan, and a description of the treatment plan implementation. Author Michael H. Fulkerson provides an explanation of how choice theory /reality therapy treatment planning differs from traditional treatment planning models, which are usually bsed on the medical model and/or external control psychology. He offers a synopsis of his experience and research using reality therapy as a treatment modality, presents a review of different treatment models and compares them to reality therapy, provides examples of how to write treatment plans from a public health model rather than a medical model, covers documentation of progress notes, and discusses case studies.

Attachment in Group Psychotherapy
Attachment theory is influencing how we understand interpersonal relationships and how psychotherapy can help facilitate change for those struggling in relationships. More recently, researchers and clinicians have applied attachment theory to group treatment, one of the most effective forms of psychotherapy to address interpersonal difficulties. This book highlights some of the bridges between attachment theory and contemporary approaches to group treatment. In addition to applying attachment theory to innovative treatments, each chapter addresses a specific way in which attachment impacts the members' capacity for empathy and perspective taking; the development of cohesion in the group; the automatic fight-flight response during group interactions; members' ability to tolerate diversity; and the leaders' capacity to foster safety within the group. This book will help group leaders gain a richer understanding of attachment theory and attachment based techniques that will ultimately benefit their groups. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Group Psychotherapy.

From Contempt to Dignity
Our vulnerabilities in life and the courage to face contempt...All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948 Article 1.Following the above can lead towards the development of fundamental principles in all forms of exchanges between individuals, groups, professionals, families, as well as during educational and organisational work. It is the basis of courageously overcoming inhibitions, resistances and anxieties. This restores freedom of thought, speech and human dignity. Acknowledging similarities and differences of race, colour, caste, economy, intellectual and religious beliefs is an important component of everyday life. Every human being is vulnerable without exception. Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest political leaders of our time, describes in his book, 'Long Walk to Freedom' (1995), how at a very early age he played with a group of friends, trying to climb up and down 'an unruly donkey'. Suddenly the donkey bent his head and unseated him into a thornbush. The thorns pricked and scratched his face all over. "I had lost face among my friends. I learnt that to humiliate another person, is to make him suffer an unnecessarily cruel fate. Even as a boy, I defeated my opponents without dishonouring them."Loss of face in public is a manifestation of self-contempt. This book has provided examples of those who have been able to overcome obstacles in their lives by valuing truth, honour and compassion, leading to regaining self-dignity which may have been lost in the early years of their lives. Talented poets like John Keats, William Wordsworth and artists including Michelangelo, Edvard Munch, Leonardo da Vinci, as well as numerous literary geniuses of different persuasions. These artists are able to demonstrate contempt either through art, music and/or literature. They are also able to normalise an individual who is already traumatised by contempt. There are many examples given in this book which demonstrates contempt, which can either be seen by all or hidden secretly.

What Are the Factors That Heal?
Written in the tradition of C.G. Jung and starting out from the insight that it is not we therapists, but the soul itself that heals psychological disorders, this book is not a manual offering advice to therapists about what to do in order to bring healing about. It rather offers a theoretical reflection about how healing is to be understood in a truly psychological (in contrast to medical) sense and it explores a range of factors that-generally part of the therapistʼs work in the consulting room-are in fact conducive to a possible healing. These factors include such aspects as the personality of the therapist, the abstract position of "therapist" in the objective institution of psychotherapy, the chosen setting, the role of the therapistʼs psychological theory, the extent to which one opens oneself to "the other", the work on consciousnessʼs ideas, illusions, images, and dreams. In each case, an attempt is made to understand more deeply how specifically and why they contribute to healing. But since the healing effect is not in our hands, due attention is also paid to the limits of therapeutic work.
The Actuality of the Reality of the Immateriality
One writes a book like this in order to help others and to influence the future for Christians and non-Christians alike, whether laymen or professionals. I'm hoping to stimulate many people, and Christians, in particular, to explore the challenging concepts of their own psychology of conversion or an earnest search for their own significance, all of which takes time to process but, when better understood, shows that faith helps in ways that modern medicine never could. My job is to clarify and elaborate, not force. With the presentation of a new paradigm, I am hoping to prompt many Christian psychiatrists to practice more fully and effectively, to give Christian psychiatry its legitimate place within the profession of organized psychiatry, and to better inform patients in choosing their provider for the greatest possible healing and growth. This book is a calling cultivated during a lifetime of practice which shows tested and proven experiences of greater healing, hope and faith. So, it is a delicate process, woven between the poles of humility on the one hand and responsibility for making a helping effort on the other. And this is true, or it should be, of all helping professional practice -- to do what needs to be done and, moreover, know how it works pragmatically in life - in each of our lives. This is why I am prone to say that "God ain't stupid and He ain't impractical," and, thus, that "the Lord ain't just whistling Dixie!" because "we are all swimming in the same stuff." The dream of the purely biological understanding of man, the dream of secular humanistic psychiatry, is a delusion: it is based on a reductionistic, purely materialistic worldview. The Christian's worldview begins with, is an expression of, and ends with, the spirit world. The well-rounded and balanced Christian realizes that the world, however, is hardly only spirit, nor is man.
Moving Beyond Trauma
Have you noticed that no matter how much time you spend in talk therapy, you still feel anxious and triggered? That is because talk therapy can keep you stuck in a pattern of reliving your stories, rather than moving beyond them. But, most of all, it's because trauma doesn't just reside inside your mind--much more importantly, it locks itself in other parts of your body. When left unresolved, that trauma continues to live there, impacting your life, your relationships, your sense of safety, and your ability to experience joy in very real ways.In Moving Beyond Trauma, Ilene Smith will introduce you to Somatic Experiencing, a body-based therapy capable of healing the damage done to your nervous system by trauma. She breaks down the ways in which trauma impacts your nervous system and walks you through a program designed to process trauma in a non-threatening way. You will discover a healing lifestyle marked by a deeper connection with yourself, those around you, and with everything you do.
It's Not About the Activity
It's Not About the Activity: Thinking Outside the Toolbox in Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy and Learning offers a hands-on approach to building creative equine facilitated programs. Based on the HERD Institute(R) methodology, the book demonstrates the importance of a relational approach to creating impactful programs for a wide range of clients. Lac offers ethical and safety considerations, emphasizing the importance of both human and equine welfare in this work, and clearly delineates the differences in scope of practice between equine facilitated psychotherapy and equine facilitated learning. Additional case studies provide readers with a clear understanding of how to put theory into practice.

Posttraumatic Abortion-Related Stress in Psychiatric Outpatients
Objective: This study examines potential risk factors for long-term abortion-related distress in women.Method: One hundred and two women receiving outpatient psychiatric services were assigned to one of three groups on the basis of their reported abortion history. Women with a positive history of abortion were assigned to a distressed or non-distressed group depending on whether abortion-related distress was a primary presenting problem. Women with no history of abortion who sought outpatient services served as controls. Results: Comparisons across groups revealed that the abortion-distressed group had symptoms consistent with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, including intrusive thoughts of the abortion experience and active avoidance of events associated with their abortions. Two women who underwent an abortion following rape were both in the abortion-distressed group. Conclusions: Implications for identifying women at risk for long-term distress are discussed and suggestions for clinical interventions are made.

The Do-it-Yourself Therapy Book for Depression
While it is unlikely that two persons suffering from depression have the same exact triggers, we cannot deny that we've all had the same bitter taste of this dreadful "mental" condition: - the constant terrifying sense of foreboding and hopelessness- that perpetual queasy sensation in the gut- the weakness in the limbs- the persistent mental pull to focus on the negative things- the inability to get satisfaction from sleep- and the constant need to breathe deeply as an attempt to ease our chests from the burden of unrelenting pounding palpitations. These and many other harrowing characteristics of depression, in different shades of severity, are the common grounds shared by most people who suffer from it.In each therapy chapter, you will witness how every one of these awful facets of depression was dealt with and whether there was success or not. You will have an unobstructed view of the nitty gritty, the darkest and most naked of thoughts, the smallest and biggest of steps taken, and all the failures and successes in between. You will see how seemingly insignificant steps can prove to be reliable lifeline out of your horrible pit of depression. From these intimate efforts, you can draw out your own customized templates for therapy that you can readily use any given time that you need them, anywhere, unlimited times, for free.It is my hope that you would find the same courage that enabled me to strip my mind naked as I faced the only person in the Therapy Room: ME.When you realize that you can face and look in the eye this stark-naked person that you are - and that you are willing to improve the areas that you can and accept those you cannot - then you have the rest of the therapy time to enjoy.
Integration as Integrity
What is ""integration""? Christians serving in the psychological professions have long debated the proper way to understand the relationship between ""psychology"" on the one hand, and ""theology"" or ""Christianity"" or ""the Christian faith"" on the other. This book argues for understanding integration as a matter of personal integrity: it's not about bridging or blending academic disciplines, but about having a coherent vocational identity. What narrative will hold together both our core identity as Christians and our developing identity as clinicians? Peacemaking is proposed as the central motif, based on the Beatitudes of Jesus. Christian therapists who understand themselves as peacemakers will in turn cultivate the clinical virtues of hope, humility, compassion, and Sabbath rest.
A Catholic Christian Meta-Model of the Person
A Catholic Christian Meta-Model of the Person integrates the insights of three wisdom traditions--the psychological sciences, philosophy, and theology--to provide a framework for understanding the person. The Meta-Model develops a more systematic, integrative, and non-reductionist vision of the person, marriage, family, and society than is found in any of these three disciplines alone. The Meta-Model is a unifying framework for the integration of already-existing personality theories and therapeutic models. In addition, it enhances assessment, diagnosis, case conceptualization, and treatment planning by addressing eleven essential dimensions of the person needed in mental health practice aimed at healing and flourishing. The book also explores how the Meta-Model framework can improve client care. Finally, it demonstrates how the Meta-Model assists mental health professionals to better understand how they can be faithful to their Christian identity as they serve all clients--Christians, persons from other faiths, and non-believers.

The Courage to Suffer
In The Courage to Suffer, Daryl and Sara Van Tongeren introduce a new therapeutic framework that helps people flourish in the midst of suffering by cultivating meaning.Suffering is an inescapable part of life. Some suffering is so profound, so violating, or so dogged that it fundamentally changes people in indelible ways. Many existing therapeutic approaches, from a medical model, treat suffering as mental illness and seek a curative solution. However, such approaches often fail to examine the deep questions that suffering elicits (e.g., existential themes of death, isolation, freedom, identity, and meaninglessness) and the far-reaching ways in which suffering affects the lived experience of each individual.Drawing from scientific research, clinical examples, existential and positive psychology, and their own personal stories of loss and sorrow, Daryl and Sara's integrative model blends the rich depth of existential clinical approaches with the growth focus of strengths-based approaches.Through cutting edge-research and clinical case examples, they detail five "phases of suffering" and how to work with a client's existential concerns at each phase to develop meaning. They also discuss how current research suggests to build a flourishing life, especially for those who have endured, and are enduring, suffering.Daryl and Sara show how those afflicted with suffering, while acknowledging the reality of their pain, can still choose to live with hope.

Embodying Integration
Discussing spirituality and religion in the therapy room is increasingly accepted, some even forgetting that integration of psychology and Christianity was once a rare thing. Yet even as the decades-long integration movement has been so effective, the counselor's lived context in which integration happens grows increasingly complex, and the movement has reached a new turning point. Christian practitioners need a fresh look at integration in a postmodern world. In Embodying Integration, Megan Anna Neff and Mark McMinn provide an essential guide to becoming integrators today. Representing two generations of counselor education and practice, they model how to engage hard questions and consider how different theological views, gendered perspectives, and cultures integrate with psychology and counseling. "Many students," they write, "don't want models and views that tend to simplify complexity into categories. They are looking for conversation that helps them dive into the complexity, to ponder the nuances and messiness of integration." More than focusing on resolving issues, Neff and McMinn help situate wisdom through personally engaging, diverse views and narratives.Arising from conversations between an up-and-coming practitioner and her veteran integrator father, this book considers practical implications for the day-to-day realities of counseling and psychotherapy. Personal stories, dialogues between the coauthors, and discussion questions throughout help students, teachers, mental health professionals, and anyone interested in psychology and faith to enter--and continue--the conversation.Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS) Books explore how Christianity relates to mental health and behavioral sciences including psychology, counseling, social work, and marriage and family therapy in order to equip Christian clinicians to support the well-being of their clients.

Fairy Tales
Fairy Tales: The Magic Mirror synthesizes psychological and literary research from Freud, Bettleheim and Egan and puts it in a context that can help parents and teachers more effectively use stories at home and at school. Davison's work presents a deeper meaning to common fairy tales and an understanding of where they fit into a child's psychological development. It can be used as a handbook on its own or a springboard for analyzing and evaluating stories which can pose as scaffolding for the psychological development of children.
