Using Functional Analysis in Psychotherapy
Filled with rich case examples, this book shows how psychotherapists from any orientation can use functional analysis (FA) to better understand their clients and specifically target the changes that clients seek. Extensive therapist-client dialogues illustrate ways to probe difficult emotions and explore the causes and consequences of behavior, with special attention to harnessing the power of metaphor. FA is a core component of such evidence-based treatments as dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and behavioral activation, and is central to the growing movement toward process-based therapies in general. This is the English edition of V瓣gledning i klinisk funktionell analys, published in Swedish in 2023 and translated and revised by the author.
Nurturing the Nurturers; Healing the Planet
We live in difficult times: domestic violence, terrorism, gross exploitation by various governments and financial institutions, ecological destruction, global warming.........the list goes on.We now know from major advances in developmental neuroscience that if there is significant abuse or neglect in the first three years of life, the results can be catastrophic. If we could only get those first three years of life right, a huge range of negative behavioural consequences would be reduced to more manageable levels......less violence, less terrorism, more empathy and compassion, more energy to apply to positive ends.Compared with other health problems, the burden of child maltreatment is substantial, indicating the importance of prevention efforts to address this high prevalence. How can we ease and amend all this? What we need are programs to nurture the nurturers. When I was being mentored by my Aboriginal elders in Central Australia, we had to exchange dreams. I dreamt about a Dreamtime ancestor whose task was to nurture the nurturers. But his domain extended to the entire planet.Wati Kanyilpai begins his global journey from Central Australia, looking after all the nurturers, especially the mothers, human and animal, that nurture their infants. But his nurturance extends to anyone or anything that cares for other beings. What we need are Ministries in Early Childhood Nurturance, departments that can identify mothers/fathers at risk and in stress, and programmes that protect and nurture them. This capacity to nurture the nurturers, to look after all the beings who already look after other beings, is a vital task if we are to save this suffering Planet.

Arts in Nature with Children and Young People
This novel text brings together research and practice on the intersection between arts and nature and their impact on children and young people's wellbeing, health equality and sustainability.Existing literature focuses on either the impact of the arts or the impact of being in/with nature on children's and young people's wellbeing. However, the intersection between the two - arts and nature - and their combined effect on wellbeing has received limited attention. Through five research-based and seven practice-based chapters, this book draws upon arts-in-nature practices that incorporate visual arts, music, movement, drama and poetry, in a range of natural environments, such as forests, beaches, greenhouses, parks, community areas and school playgrounds.Arts in Nature with Children and Young People will appeal to anyone working with children and young people, including mental health and healthcare professionals, teachers, researchers, artists, and arts therapists. It is also an accessible guide for parents and families looking for inspiration and ideas for creative and outdoor activities.
Seizing Moments and Being Useful
Seizing Moments and Being UsefulIn this book, Windy Dryden charts his development as a single-session therapist by presenting his key articles and chapters on single-session therapy (SST). Beginning with an up-to-date overview of SST, he then presents and comments on his very early work doing REBT-based single sessions that were not informed by the single-session therapy mindset and, presents, for comparative purposes, a session that was informed by this mindset. Developing this theme, he presents a comprehensive outline of the SST mindset and includes an updated chapter exploring the relationship between SST and REBT.Also, included in this book are chapters on the core skills needed to practise SST and Windy Dryden's experiences of practising SST in 'meet-up groups' and in an 'online health service'. Then, he considers the variety of names given to SST as well topics of keen interest to therapists: how to work with clients without 'opening up a can of worms' and how to deal with risk and harm in SST.This book will be of particular interest to those curious about SST who wish to learn from one single-session therapist's journey..
WWW
WWW: The Collected Wonderful Words of Windy is a collection of Windy Dryden's 'wise words' and encapsulations of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) drawn from previous publications. It also contains, for the first time, a number of 'little gems' said by Windy Dryden during therapy demonstrations with volunteers, designed to help them deal with their nominated issues in ways that might be considered memorable. In addition to being comprehensive, this book is more logically organised than my previous publications in this genre and is divided into thirty-one parts.
The Role of Trust in Mental Health
This book offers a comprehensive examination of trust and its relationship with mental illness and wellbeing.Engaging with a broad range of mental health research, theory, and practice through various transdisciplinary theoretical models of trust, this book highlights the social and family contexts surrounding the making and breaking of trust and mental health. It examines various sociological conceptual and theoretical frameworks of risk and trust while also engaging with evolutionary perspectives on the human need for cooperation and trust. The author describes how, in a world of constant connectivity, the drawing of boundaries assigns some people as strangers, using stigma as a form of power. The book concludes by considering the future of mental health and where trust-building may be possible. Each chapter is interspersed with observations and insights from the author's personal research covering many populations, communities and issues over several decades.Drawing on a wide range of interdisciplinary literature, the book will be of interest to mental health practitioners, researchers, and scholars interested in the psychosocial aspects of mental illness and stigma.

Assessment Engineering in Test Design
Assessment Engineering in Test Design presents an engineering-inspired, multi-disciplinary approach to the field of applied measurement that bridges the gap between the craft of item writing and test design, the statistical sophistication of psychometric methods for scale development and maintenance, and score interpretations. This book directly addresses the topic of "next generation" assessment design head-on by proposing a new perspective, a new understanding, of the challenge of designing, developing, and implementing large- (and small-) scale educational testing programs. It introduces Assessment Engineering (AE) as a principled approach to test design where human judgment and creative license during test blueprinting and item writing are replaced with carefully developed cognitive task models that can generate highly consistent test forms that support intended statistical score scale properties and interpretations over time. In doing so, it shows how AE integrates key technologies and design principles from industrial engineering, cognitive science, information technology, machine learning and artificial intelligence, data science, statistical quality control, and advanced psychometrics to the practice of test design and development. Ultimately, this integrated approach offers improved and more consistent overall assessment quality; implementation of highly structured designs and scalable automation to reduce item production costs; reduction of item pretesting costs and exposure; improved calibration and scale maintenance over time; and more consistent generation and deployment of very high-quality, low-cost test items to meet both low- and high-volume production demands over time.Written by a major contributor to the literature on test design and scoring, Assessment Engineering in Test Design is an essential read for all students of psychology and related disciplines as well as test developers and psychometricians.
Concepts, Kinds, and Cognitive Development
In Concepts, Kinds, and Cognitive Development, Frank C. Keil provides a coherent account of how concepts and word meanings develop in children, adding to our understanding of the representational nature of concepts and word meanings at all ages.Keil argues that it is impossible to adequately understand the nature of conceptual representation without also considering the issue of learning. Weaving together issues in cognitive development, philosophy, and cognitive psychology, he reconciles numerous theories, backed by empirical evidence from nominal kinds studies, natural-kinds studies, and studies of fundamental categorical distinctions. He shows that all this evidence, when put together, leads to a better understanding of semantic and conceptual development. The book opens with an analysis of the problems of modeling qualitative changes in conceptual development, investigating how concepts of natural kinds, nominal kinds, and artifacts evolve. The studies on nominal kinds document a powerful and unambiguous developmental pattern indicating a shift from a reliance on global tabulations of characteristic features to what appears to be a small set of defining ones. The studies on natural kinds document an analogous shift toward a core theory instead of simple definition. Both sets of studies are strongly supported by cross cultural data. While these patterns seem to suggest that the young child organizes concepts according to characteristic features, Keil argues that there is a framework of conceptual categories and causal beliefs that enables even very young children to understand kinds at a deeper, theoretically guided, level. This account suggests a new way of understanding qualitative change and carries strong implications for how concepts are represented at any point in development.A Bradford Book
Recovering Sanity
Recovering Sanity is a compassionately written examination of the experience of psychosis and related mental illnesses. By presenting four in-depth profiles of illness and recovery, Dr. Edward Podvoll reveals the brilliance and chaos of the psychotic mind and demonstrates its potential for recovery outside of traditional institutional settings. Dr. Podvoll counters the conventional thinking that the millions of Americans suffering from psychosis can never fully recover. He offers a bold new approach to treatment that involves home care with a specially trained team of practitioners. Using "basic attendance," a treatment technique inspired by the author's study of Buddhist psychology, healthcare professionals can use the tools of compassion and awareness to help patients recover their underlying sanity. Originally published as The Seduction of Madness, this reissue includes new introductory material and two new appendices.
Psychoneuroendocrinology in Psychosocial and Psychotherapeutic Practice
What are hormones, and what significance do they have for the psyche and our behavior? Do hormones influence our psyche and behavior? Can our behavior influence our hormones? Is there a connection between hormones and mental disorders? This book explores the interplay between the neurobiological foundations of psychological experiences and behavior, endocrine processes, and psychosocial environmental influences. It presents the foundational research of both the scientific disciplines of endocrinology and psychoneuroendocrinology in a way that is accessible to readers without medical or neurobiological backgrounds. This book demonstrates for the first time how these interdisciplinary insights can be implemented into a biopsychosocial coaching approach, which serves both to maintain and promote mental health. It is a coaching approach suitable for both psychosocial counseling and psychotherapeutic practice.

Narrative Therapy in Wonderland
Therapists may marvel at children's imaginative triumphs, but how often do they recognize such talents as vital to the therapy hour? Should therapists reserve a space for make-believe only when nothing is at stake, or might it be precisely those moments when something truly matters that imagination is most urgently needed? This book offers an alternative to therapeutic perspectives that treat children as vulnerable and helpless. It invites readers to consider how the imaginative gifts and knowledge of children, when supported by the therapist and family, can bring about dramatic change. The book begins with an account of the foundations of narrative theory. It explains how such elements as language, characterization, and suspense contribute to the coherence of a story and bring young people into focus. Each subsequent chapter provides specific suggestions for the practice of narrative therapy. Examples of the difficulties children face are offered, along with narrative interventions and tips for overcoming common barriers that can arise along the way. Readers will learn a variety of ready-to-implement strategies, including how to personify problems, compose letters to affirm children's identities, summon fairies to lend a helping hand, and many more. Sample dialogues between the authors, children, and their parents bring the application of each practice to life, illuminating how even the most stubborn problem can be outwitted, sometimes by mischievous means. With robust professional insight, Narrative Therapy in Wonderland will aid any practitioner in calling on children's imaginative know-how. How often can a young person be spotted diving headlong into a world of fantasy? This book explores the extraordinary fact that these young people may, upon arrival in Wonderland, be far better equipped to take on even dire challenges than when they remain "up above."

Nonviolent Resistance in Trauma-Focused Practice
This book presents Nonviolent Resistance (NVR) for trauma-focused care, adopting a systemic and trauma-orientated approach to aggressive and self-destructive behaviours in young people. Based on systemic therapy methods and principles in socio-political NVR, NVR targets aggressive and self-destructive child behaviours in a relational way to help parents develop self-efficacy in responding to the problematic behaviour and grow a supportive community around the family. In this book, Peter Jakob integrates the original NVR model with aspects of trauma and attachment theory, solution-focused therapy and narrative therapy, in order to expand the efficacy of NVR in trauma-focused work. Grounded in Jakob's extensive clinical experience and research, the book will help the reader navigate the complexity of working across various systems in family therapy and counselling, particularly within challenging contexts such as multi-stressed families, adoptive families, foster- and residential care. Method descriptions and illustrative case examples are featured throughout the chapters to ultimately help readers contribute to their clients' (re)discovery of their internal and interpersonal resources and ultimately promote healing from trauma for everyone involved. This text is an essential resource for a wide variety of mental health professionals, social workers and family workers, as well as caregivers and managers in residential care.
Philosophical Foundations of Psychotherapy
Philosophical Foundations of Psychotherapy promotes a critical understanding of the ideas, traditions, values, and principles that inform and shape - for better or for worse - what therapists do.The book challenges the unhelpful misconception that philosophy is for philosophers alone, because human reality is too complex for therapists to be unaware of the foundations, difficulties, and contradictions within our value systems, ethics, and assumptions. By retrieving attitudes from other times and other places, traversing the relational contours of history right up to contemporary thinkers and practitioners, the author argues that not only do relationships heal, but they offer the only safe harbour in life's sea of troubles. He promotes a conscientious radical relationality, which remains attentive to its influences, including contemporary debates about our neoliberal selves, the superstructures of culture, and the ethics of authenticity. In stepping back from the sometimes- narrow concerns of our therapeutic methods, the book explores broader themes important for living well: what is the good of therapy, how do we reconcile our sense of futility in the face of an indifferent universe, postcolonial debates, responses to disembodied artificial intelligence, and alternatives to our human- centred stance towards Nature. This book is primarily for practitioners, trainees, and educators, but ultimately it is intended for the greater good of clients and those interested in what therapeutic practices and practitioners have to offer. It will also be useful for those teaching research methods, the practice of research supervision, reflexivity, and personal development, across all areas related to mental health.
Psychoanalysis with Adolescents and Children
In Psychoanalysis with Adolescents and Children: Learning to Surf, Mary T. Brady expertly guides the reader through the challenging and vital process of working with young analysands.Brady likens the experience to 'learning to surf.' While finding Bion's metaphor that the analyst must be able to 'think under fire' useful, she suggests 'learning to surf' is more apt in psychoanalysis with adolescents and children. Drawing on this metaphor throughout the volume, she describes how the adolescent can be potentially upended, injured or even killed by emotional waves too tumultuous to manage. Surfing also evokes the often uneasy but sometimes thrilling balances of adolescence. Using clinical vignettes from her extensive experience in the field, Brady explores how to work with young people experiencing issues such as eating disorders, gender challenges, parental substance abuse and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on Bionian Field Theory, as well as the work of Donald Winnicott, she explores how analysts can surf with the adolescent or child in navigating the ebb and flow of psychic life and development. This book is essential reading for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, including psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and counselors, who treat children and adolescents.

The Observer and the Observed
This book approaches the God-question in a different way than normal: from the perspective of psychotherapy. In a world of machine intelligence, the key idea is an analogy of being between human personhood and divine personhood as the only satisfactory way of showing that our inner conscious awareness (nourished by the validation of the self) is responded to in ultimate terms. It aims to extrapolate ""from below,"" from our psychological experience to asking ultimate questions, drawing lines between: -Observation in quantum physics -The maternal gaze -Recognition in social worlds that confer perception in place of invisibility -The power of inter-subjectivity in relational neurobiology and therapy What has to be accounted for is our sense of personhood and how that fits in with a cosmos that is at best neutral. The metaphor of a ""wifi"" universe is proposed but rather than a soulless device being switched on, how a human psyche comes to a sense of consciousness of its own value is the issue here. A personal God is the best explanation for the evidence of how our personhood and subject status requires correspondence. As engaging with a neutral AI entity is bound to be ""soulless,"" the first-person perspective requires an I-thou relationship. A universe constructed from ""nature"" by itself or one where the ultimate is impersonal energy just does not cut it or respond adequately to what is inside us. This book offers an account of how the realm described by physics and our inner world can tie up--perhaps the only way they can!

The Socio-Emotional Relationship Workbook for Couples
This supportive and empowering guide helps readers identify and build on their relational values, which the dominant culture tends to minimize, inhibit, or disparage.Written in an engaging, easy to read and use format, this workbook offers clear case examples and activities that readers can apply to their own relationships. The introductory chapter describes the problem--how unrecognized power imbalances in who notices, accommodates, and attends to one another make attaining satisfying, mutually supportive intimate relationships difficult. Chapters 2-5 introduce practices that help readers recognize the connections between their social worlds and how they engage in their relationships, with exercises that facilitate this personal awareness and enable them to share these experiences with their partners. Chapters 6-10 guide readers through assessing reciprocity in their relationships and exercises to apply each of the four components of the Circle of Care (mutual vulnerability, attunement, influence, and relational responsibility) and strategies for maintaining commitment to their relational goals over the long term. In each chapter, exercises are structured to first teach personal socio-emotional awareness, followed by relational practices that facilitate engagement based on mutual attunement and shared commitment rather than debate. This book views emotion and meaning as the link between individuals and the larger society and helps readers develop awareness of their social contexts and societal power processes that work against relationships.

Decolonizing Trauma Healing
This book offers a critical examination of the field of trauma work using a decolonial lens, recentering narratives and approaches to healing in a more inclusive, culturally responsive way than that offered by dominant Eurocentric approaches. As trauma is a universal experience, a colonized paradigm for responding to trauma re-introduces problematic dynamics of domination and subjugation that are inimical to healing. Decolonizing Trauma Healing offers a new paradigm for how psychologists and other mental health providers can learn to properly understand and work with people whose lives, psyches, and souls have been damaged by exposure to trauma. Dr. Laura S. Brown introduces her decolonial, humble, culturally responsive (DHCR) model of trauma healing practice. It urges readers to abandon the concept of cultural competence and other approaches that maintain a Eurocentric perspective, in favor of a decolonial method that re-centers the sufferer's lived experience, with an understanding of the subtle ways in which the colonial mindset underlies the causes of trauma as well as our traditional conception of trauma healing. As a member of a colonized and marginalized culture, as well as in her work as a trauma healer, Dr. Brown serves as an inspiration for readers who want to understand why the traditional approach to trauma care has been insufficient, and all those who are ready to do the work needed to bring the field to a new level of clarity and rigor.

Part II explores the practical application of these models, including scripts for specific interventions and newly updated clinical examples that highlight how to effectively work with diverse client populations of today. Students will learn how to make connections between individual symptoms and cutting-edge family practices to respond successfully to cases involving substance abuse, trauma, grief, depression, suicide risk, violence, LGBTQIA+ families, and severely mentally ill clients and their families. This newly updated and streamlined edition includes fresh information on working with LGBTQIA+ families and on the family as a resource for suicidal members, and it also includes new discussion of models, such as emotion-focused couple therapy and internal family systems.
