IT HURTS (From a Child's Perspective)
Abused and neglected children still love their parents and family. However, regardless of their age, many have wondered and asked the question, "Why?" A typical response from any traumatic event, incident, or memories of those painful moments. Every child deserves to be heard and to have their basic needs met by their loved ones. When a child encounters a bad moment in their life, it can sometimes lead to trauma and have more of a negative impact on a child's development and emotional state. Any child maltreatment, abuse, and neglect can have enduring physical, intellectual, and psychological repercussions into adolescence and adulthood. This book covers some of these feelings, such as hurt, shame, sadness, or thoughts that a child would or would not say verbally. Yet we can all agree that every child is deserving of a safe, healthy, and protective environment that displays the positivity of family and love.

Maybe the Whole Ocean
Just as the ocean covers most of the planet, relationships compromise the majority of life. Strategic navigation of relationships occurs as people consider a cognitive understanding of emotions, e.g., that feelings are more governed by thinking than by circumstances. This is foundational for explaining how most interpersonal problems can be minimized and how new levels of freedom and joy in relationships with others can be experienced. Using additional metaphors, fourteen topics related to relationships are explored: emotion, freedom, human nature, competition and cooperation, motivation, grace, communication, anger, sadness, happiness, fear, connection, forgiveness, and virtue. Each topic is discussed with an emphasis on a cognitive model of emotions as well as reflections on various relevant Bible passages. Overall, this book attempts to show, through various principles, acronyms, analogies, and examples, that a simple idea (thoughts determine emotions) can make a significant difference. This idea is essential to understanding how people can be more emotionally responsive than reactive, which in turn will result in interpersonal dynamics that are characterized more by opportunity than obligation, cooperation rather than competition, and thriving rather than just surviving.

Stages of my Life (A book of poetry)
My life story cannot be written as yet because I have a lot more living to do. However, I wanted my children and family to get some understanding about what I have gone through and how I came out as somewhat sane individual. Being a lesbian woman born in Jamaica in the 60's was not easy. It took a lot for me to understand how to love and accept myself. Instead of my life story, I have written poetry to express some of my experiences.

Life After Losing A Child
Life After Losing a Child is dedicated to my son, Antonio Smith-Scott (May 23, 1992-March 5, 2013) and in honor of my mother, Flora Scott (August 25, 1949-January 3, 2020), who birthed eight children and lost six before her own death. Life After Losing a Child is based on my own experiences-from a mother's perspective losing a child, from a sibling's perspective losing brothers in early childhood, how the death of my brothers affected my parents and our family. I also share how losing my own son affected my family, my four other children, and their father. Millions of parents lose a child every day and are left struggling, trying to not be overtaken with grief for the rest of our lives. We suffer from guilt, shame, hurt, pain, and sorrows until we allow Jesus to heal us. Losing a child from a miscarriage, stillbirth, sickness, deformities, abortions, accidents, or homicides-all these losses of a child carries the same hurts, pains, sorrows, and grief. The loss of these children leaves a void in all our lives as a family. I pray by sharing my loss and grief process, you will seek Jesus for healing for yourself and family. That you will be empowered to live your best life after the loss of a child or sibling. I pray you will live to the fullest capacity God has intended, Jesus died to give you, with the Holy Spirit guiding you-a life of purpose not only for yourself and family, but for the child that is gone but not forgotten.

The Art and Science of Aging Well
In the past century, average life expectancies have nearly doubled, and today, for the first time in human history, many people have a realistic chance of living to eighty or beyond. As life expectancy increases, Americans need accurate, scientifically grounded information so that they can take full responsibility for their own later years. In The Art and Science of Aging Well, Mark E. Williams, M.D., discusses the remarkable advances that medical science has made in the field of aging and the steps that people may take to enhance their lives as they age. Through his own observations and by use of the most current medical research, Williams offers practical advice to help aging readers and those who care for them enjoy personal growth and approach aging with optimism and even joy.The Art and Science of Aging Well gives a realistic portrait of how aging occurs and provides important advice for self-improvement and philosophical, spiritual, and conscious evolution. Williams argues that we have considerable choice in determining the quality of our own old age. Refuting the perspective of aging that insists that personal, social, economic, and health care declines are persistent and inevitable, he takes a more holistic approach, revealing the multiple facets of old age. Williams provides the resources for a happy and productive later life.
Homophobia and Healing
With over thirty years of dedication and twenty years of published research Homophobia and Healing: Psychotherapy and the Psychology of Prejudice, is a provocative, timeless, scholarly, and professional work. A comprehensive analysis maps one-thousand-years of bias against same gender love; then details the literature from the 1970s representing the most pivotal fifty years for LGBTIQ2S+ health and psychology. The author engages the controversial debates on homosexuality, gender, sexual difference, race, and Indigenous issues. Modern narratives of clients and therapists help examine the cold war impacts of chronic homophobia, violence, racism, and prejudice. Therapeutic modelling in the mechanisms of prejudice reveals the origins of trauma, and sketches pathways for healing, self- development, and counseling therapy. At this critical juncture in global politics, this reflection on the polarization of entrenched attitudes provides clear thinking, rational debate, and de-escalating strategies. Built for helping professionals, counsellors, psychologists, social workers, ministers, educators, nurses, and health practitioners. This is your how-to and go-to text for gaining minority infused and informed skills to address prejudicial patterns and post-trauma recovery in homophobia, racism, and other forms of prejudice. Inspiring and powerful reading during these troubling times when basic human rights cannot be taken for granted.
Executor Help
David Edey wants to save you a lot of trouble! In this self-help book he clearly, concisely, and repeatedly explains why it is important that every individual appoint an executor of their estate; what it means to be an executor of an estate; and how having a knowledgeable and responsible executor can help ensure a family's wealth, welfare, health, and future happiness. The book is filled with advice, tips, and many real-life examples demonstrating what can go wrong (and what can go right), depending on whether or not families plan accordingly in advance, communicate clearly with one another, and are willing to put petty and selfish differences aside. No one likes talking about death and inheritances before they absolutely have to, but as Edey learned from personal experience, having these conversations earlier, rather than later, will save a lot of time and money, alleviate a ton of stress and ill feeling, and ensure that the deceased's wishes are properly and efficiently carried out.
Bibba
In this autobiographical/memoir, author Carolyn Carter gives an unbelievable account of what her life was like being raised by an eccentric and domineering mother, Bibba, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. She exposes the characteristics of Bibba's mental illness and paints a true and disturbing picture of battered men syndrome, violence, abuse, and infidelity while taking us down an emotional path of unforeseen karmic events, forgiveness, and ultimately, love.

Family Divided
A Harvard-educated physician returned home one day to find a note from his wife stating she had moved out and taken the children with her. The marriage was over, but he hoped he would remain a vital part of his children's lives. His wife had other plans. This is the story of a once-happy family now torn apart by divorce - its dignity shredded in a family court system that sees mothers as the only proper guardians for their children, even in the overwhelming majority of cases not involving abusive or threatening husbands. Written from the divorced father's point of view, this book exposes our twisted legal system, its obvious abuses of civil rights, and indifferent courts that subject caring fathers across the nation to vengeful ex-wives, opportunistic psychologists and psychiatrists, and overzealous attorneys. Author Robert Mendelson argues that all fathers should not be viewed as deadbeat dads who shirk their responsibilities. Public opinion, the press, and the courts are wrong to think that men cannot be single parents. A Family Divided alerts divorcing fathers to the hidden minefields and pitfalls of custody proceedings, offers practical recommendations for reform, and sheds light on the real cause of fatherlessness in America today.

He's gone. You're separated and in the in-between season of marriage and divorce, where only a select few fully understand your struggles. In this season, when you don't know what the next best step is and loneliness can overwhelm you, sometimes it is best to simply not take any step at all. Silently reflecting and turning to God in those quiet, doubtful moments can create hope and clarity that solidifies your next step; this is especially true when you are separated from your spouse.Unlike so many books with opinions on whether divorce or reconciliation is the answer, Hopelessly Hopeful During Separation: 28 Daily Devotionals of Hope for Those Experiencing Marital Separation instead speaks words of hope with no judgment on what you decide to do next.In this season of separation let Hopelessly Hopeful During Separation hold your hand and remind you to pause for the Holder of Hope, Jesus Himself. The short daily devotionals encourage you to look to Jesus for hope throughout this season. You are not alone.Endorsements: I was only two months old the day my father separated from my mother. While the individual may not have full control, it is their responsibility to respond in a manner that is beneficial to their well-being. Abusive and toxic relationships tend to place a proverbial muzzle over the mouth of its victims. "The Voice" shares the stories of life events, details and responses to accomplish a sense of liberty and freedom. "The Voice" presents chronicles of imminent victory from each page. Ultimately, each story comes from a survivor and the purpose is to testify that "if I can make it out, so can you!" You have a voice! Use your voice!
Manimal Woe
Fanny Howe's Manimal Woe maps the intersection between history and family as few books have. Through poetry, prose, and primary sources, Howe invites us on a journey with the spirit of her father, Civil Rights lawyer and professor Mark DeWolfe Howe, who died suddenly in 1967. The past, both personal and historical, is utterly present, yet just out of reach. From her ancestors' dark legacy as slave traders, to her father's work during the Civil Rights era, to her own interracial marriage and family, Fanny Howe delves deep into the heart of the mysterious and the mystical, and emerges with the questions that so rarely find their way to us.

Dark Tears Light Tears
Dark Tears Light Tears - Watershed Survivors of Domestic Violence highlights a few brave women representing the many. It offers new concepts and valuable insight into the warning signs and characteristics of a potential abuser and why this problem exists. It symbolizes the struggles associated with survivors and perhaps non-survivors of domestic abuse and violence. It focuses on Anna Cutters, a self-made affluent, nonprofit female executive who overcame an impoverished upbringing under the worst circumstances. Anna thought she had escaped and hidden her former life as a victim of domestic abuse. However, unknown circumstances revealed her dark past, which forced her to once again come face to face with debilitating events of her childhood years, and the life of five other women who had experienced abusive relationships. Dark Tears Light Tears create awareness and reminds us about the devastating effects of domestic violence. Statistics support a historical component, and glorifying moments restore us, reminding us that weeping endures for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Dark Tears Light Tears makes no separation between Violence committed by an intimate partner within the home and the oppression of other human beings induced by slavery during the 1800s. Domestic violence, defined as "any threatening form of mental, emotional, psychological, or physical force against a spouse, intimate partner, person, or a group that either results or is likely to result in injury, or death within the home," Dark Tears Light Tears brings controversial and often hidden subject matter to the forefront. Subject matters include politics, religion, Christianity, baptism, abuse, poverty, and gun control. It emphasizes the benefits of positive emotions, and the impact of negative emotions. Most importantly, it explains fundamental reasons for not being afraid or ashamed to share stories of abusive relationships. It introduces new perspectives and explores historical events necessary for shaping our future. Dr. Brenda J. Lewis graduated with distinction from Capella University, St. Paul, MN. She has a Ph.D. in Human Services with a specialization in the Management of Nonprofit Agencies. In addition to her Domestic Abuse Platform, Dr. Lewis is an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Alpha Mu Zeta Chapter, Little Rock, AR. She is active member of the McCabe Chapel United Methodist Church, North Little Rock, AR. She is the Director of Waste Not, Want Not, Inc., a 501(c) (3) organization. Dr. Lewis has a loving family and holds the well-being of family members within her heart.
Songs for the Forgotten
Songs for the Forgotten: A Psychiatrist's Record combines pivotal moments from Julia Burns's Southern upbringing in the 1970s with case histories accumulated through three decades of treating psychiatric patients, particularly those drowning in the cultural epidemic of child abuse. This book is her journal of rupture and return. The reader will follow the author's hard-won reconciliation. In telling panoply of stories, including her own, Burns argues for the interconnectedness of humanity: when one child is hurt, our humanity is violated, and we are all responsible for undoing that damage. If no one steps up to save children, to show them they are worth saving, the cycle of abuse will continue.Songs for the Forgotten offers a strong practical component, providing information about trauma and healing. Burns illustrates how hope and wholeness can come from remembrance and telling.
