The Birth of Democracy in South America
South America contains some of the oldest democracies in the world, yet we still know relatively little about how and why democracy arose in the region. Ra繳l L. Madrid argues that three main developments - the professionalization of the military, the growth of parties, and splits within the ruling party - led to democratization in the early twentieth century. Military professionalization increased the incentives for the opposition to abandon the armed struggle and focus on the electoral path to power. The growth of parties boosted the capacity of the opposition to enact and enforce democratic reforms that would level the electoral playing field. And ruling party splits created the opportunity for the opposition and ruling party dissidents to ally and push through reforms. Dmitri Levitin explores the structural factors behind this change: the emancipation of natural philosophy from metaphysics; theologians' growing preference for philology over philosophy; and a new conception of the limits of the human mind derived from historical and oriental scholarship, not least concerning China and Japan. In turn, he shows that the ideas of two of Europe's most famous thinkers, Pierre Bayle and Isaac Newton, were both the products of this transformation and catalysts for its success. Drawing on hundreds of sources in many languages, Levitin traces in unprecedented detail Bayle and Newton's conceptions of what Thomas Hobbes called The Kingdom of Darkness: a genealogical vision of how philosophy had corrupted the human mind. Both men sought to remedy this corruption, and their ideas helped lay the foundation for the system of knowledge that emerged in the eighteenth century.

India, as the world's largest functional democracy and one of the fastest-growing economies, occupies a significant geopolitical position in global politics. In the northeastern states, the identity-based movements occasionally flare into violence, despite years of peace-building and economic development efforts. Non-traditional threats have also emerged as serious concerns. Cyber security has gained prominence due to India's increasing reliance on digital infrastructure, making it vulnerable to cyber-attacks from hostile state and non-state actors. Climate change, pandemics, and environmental degradation are factors that impact food, water, and health security. These issues, though less visible than military threats, have long-term implications for national stability.India has adopted a multipronged approach to address these threats. Militarily, India continues to modernize its defence forces, enhance border infrastructure, and strengthen strategic alliances with like-minded nations. On the internal front, the government has intensified intelligence operations, reformed counter-insurgency strategies, and invested in development initiatives to address the root causes of unrest.

Madrid argues that three main developments - the professionalization of the military, the growth of parties, and splits within the ruling party - led to democratization in the early twentieth century. Military professionalization increased the incentives for the opposition to abandon the armed struggle and focus on the electoral path to power. The growth of parties boosted the capacity of the opposition to enact and enforce democratic reforms that would level the electoral playing field.
