Patriotism and Citizenship
What is the impact of patriotism on citizens in democracies? Despite many judging patriotism negatively, we do not know much about its effect on citizenship. Most of the work on patriotism focuses on potential negatives that may derive from patriotism, such as its relationship with bigotry. Crucial debates over whether education should promote patriotism must revolve around a cost-benefit analysis over whether this is worthy of inclusion in pedagogy. This book aims to empirically demonstrate patriotism's impact on citizenship to determine whether it should be emphasized or abridged fully. Using data from multiple novel surveys and experiments, Sean Richey shows that patriotism is highly correlated with many normatively beneficial aspects of democratic citizenship and is not associated with unthinking obedience or xenophobia as is often suggested. Patriotism correlates with greater validated voter turnout and civic engagement, fewer incorrect predictions about the economy and conspiracy theory beliefs, and greater political trust, political efficacy, and satisfaction with democracy. This research provides a fuller picture of the impact of patriotism on public opinion and political behavior than has been provided previously in political theory or political psychology. It shows the benefits of patriotism for liberal democratic societies.

Occupier and Occupied
Working from the premise that gender and violence are cyclically related, masculinities' connection to power and violence are frequently simplistically assumed. Yet, amid ongoing colonisation and military occupation, there are other more complex dynamics simultaneously at play across Israel and Palestine. In this book, Chloe Skinner explores these dynamics, untangling the gendered politics of settler colonialism to shed specific light on the ways in which masculinities shift and morph in this context of colonial violence. Oscillating between analysis of Israeli militarism, colonisation, and military occupation in Palestine, each chapter examines the constitutive performance and negotiation of masculinised ideals across these colonial hierarchies. Masculinities are thus analysed across these settings in connection, rather than in isolation, as gendered hierarchies, performances, and identities intertwine and intersect with the racialised violence of settler colonialism.

Breaking with the medieval scholastic tradition, modern science viewed nature as a reified mechanism which could be mathematically measured, empirically predicted, causally explained, and managed. Nature itself was recast as a dead machine stripped of any inherent meaning or purpose. Ultimately, when applied to the production process, the field of natural science led to scientific management and economic exploitation; and when applied in the academy, particularly to the social sciences, the field of natural science led to the eclipse of reason and the twilight of social theory. Building upon the radical analysis of Marx and Engels, Shadows of the Enlightenment articulates a new liberatory postmodern science and technology grounded in Marx's theory of social justice, integrating ancient and modern traditions from classical Greece to the French Revolution, from the Paris Commune to the Iroquois Confederacy. Why Democracies Fight Dictators
Over the course of the last century, there has been an outsized incidence of conflict between democracies and personalist regimes--political systems where a single individual has undisputed executive power and prominence. In most cases, it has been the democratic side that has chosen to employ military force. Why Democracies Fight Dictators takes up the question of why liberal democracies are so inclined to engage in conflict with personalist dictators. Building on research in political science, history, sociology, and psychology and marshalling evidence from statistical analysis of conflict, multi-archival research of American and British perceptions during the Suez Crisis and Gulf War, and non-democracies' understanding of the threat from Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait, Madison V. Schramm offers a novel and nuanced explanation for patterns in escalation and hostility between liberal democracies and personalist regimes. When conflicts of interest arise between the two types of states, Schramm argues, cognitive biases and social narratives predispose leaders in liberal democracies to perceive personalist dictators as particularly threatening and to respond with anger--an emotional response that elicits more risk acceptance and aggressive behavior. She also locates this tendency in the escalatory dynamics that precede open military conflict: coercion, covert action, and crisis bargaining. At all of these stages, the tendency toward anger and risk acceptance contributes to explosive outcomes between democratic and personalist regimes.
