Institutionalising Multispecies Justice

Ingram 出版
2025/02/13 出版

Multispecies Justice (MSJ) is a theory and practice seeking to correct the defects making dominant theories of justice incapable of responding to current and emerging planetary disruptions and extinctions. Multispecies Justice starts with the assumption that justice is not limited to humans but includes all Earth others, and the relationships that enable their functioning and flourishing. This Element describes and imagines a set of institutions, across all scales and in different spheres, that respect, revere, and care for the relationships that make life on Earth possible and allow all natural entities, humans included, to flourish. It draws attention to the prefigurative work happening within societies otherwise dominated by institutions characterised by Multispecies Injustice, demonstrating historical and ongoing practices of MSJ in different contexts. It then sketches speculative possibilities that expand on existing institutional reforms and are more fundamentally transformational. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Intelligence, Security and the State

Ingram 出版
2025/02/13 出版

The modern-day UK intelligence and security community is the product of over a century of reviews going back to Edwardian spy scares, through two World Wars, and a Cold War. Written by intelligence experts, Intelligence, Security and the State provides an insight into the development of UK intelligence through a selection of the many intelligence reviews that have taken place during this period. How and why these reviews were commissioned and their impact, if any, is analysed in detail. The reviews cover the origins and early development of the community, alongside the political, operational, and financial oversight of British intelligence. Each of the declassified reviews, reproduced here for the first time, are introduced by short essays giving a wider understanding of the UK intelligence community. The book offers a detailed insight into the machinery of government in the UK and British intelligence as a whole.

Local Governance in Japan

Yu,Noda  著
Springer 出版
2025/02/12 出版

Local Governance in Japan is the first comprehensive exploration of local government in Japan, examining the sustainability of local governments operating with limited policy resources. This interdisciplinary study integrates insights from public administration, political science, economics, sociology, and business management. Japan has faced significant challenges in ensuring sustainability from rapid economic growth in the mid-20th century to the bubble's burst in the 1990s, and the population decline since 2008, along with large-scale natural disasters. Amid systemic changes--including a 46% reduction in local governments--local administrations have been developing effective cooperative relationships between local governments and exploring the significance of cooperation with citizens, NPOs, and the private sector. Characterized by extensive public facilities and infrastructure, Japan's local governments provide a model for addressing future governance challenges. This book is essential for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking innovative strategies to maintain public services and navigate the complexities of governance in a resource-constrained world.

Texturing Difference

Polity Press 出版
2025/02/11 出版

This book situates the nuanced intervention of the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa within the international conjuncture of anti-colonial thought and decolonization. It argues that the Black Consciousness Movement, in addition to its urgent political focus, should also be read as a philosophical intervention on the problem of Man that haunts the idea of race. As Steve Biko once famously said, apartheid will end; the real question is what comes after apartheid. Maurits van Bever Donker argues that the Black Consciousness Movement found intellectual and conceptual allies in the writings of Frantz Fanon and Aim矇 C矇saire, tracing the problem of race as foundational to what is called 'the script of Man' and, in the process, inventing the possibility of a new sense of Man, one with 'a more human face'. While the work of figures like Biko, Fanon and C矇saire tends to be read as discrete political texts in a broader field of negritude and radical black thought, Texturing Difference explores what becomes possible when this network of texts is read from the perspective of South Africa. This intervention has significance, not only for how race is approached and understood in South Africa, but for the global workings of race in our time.

Inequality, Crime, and Resistance in New York City

Temple Uni 出版
2025/02/10 出版

Looking closely at New York City's political development since the 1970s, three "political orders"--conservativism, neoliberalism, and egalitarianism--emerged. In Inequality, Crime, and Resistance in New York City, Timothy Weaver argues that the intercurrent impact of these orders has created a constant battle for power. Weaver brings these clashes to the fore by showing how New York City politics has been shaped by these conflicting orders. He examines the transformation of the city's political economy in the aftermath of the 1975 fiscal crisis through neoliberal real estate development and privatization, the conservative rise of law-and-order politics in the 1970s to 1990s, and the efforts of the city's egalitarians to respond to each of these shifts through social movements such as Occupy and Black Lives Matter. Inequality, Crime, and Resistance in New York City belies glib assumptions about the city's liberal character. Weaver reveals the metropolis not as a homogenous political whole, but as a site in which the victories and defeats of rival political forces change the terms of local citizenship for the millions of residents who call the city home. In the series Political Lessons from American Cities

Human Rights and Transnational Democracy in South Korea

Ingu,Hwang  著
Ingram 出版
2025/02/10 出版

The first account of the historical intersection between South Korea's democratic transition and the global human rights boom in the 1970s Drawing on previously unused or underutilized archival sources, this book offers the first account of the historical intersection between South Korea's democratic transition and the global human rights boom in the 1970s. It shows how local pro-democracy activists pragmatically engaged with global advocacy groups, especially Amnesty International and the World Council of Churches, to maximize their socioeconomic and political struggles against the backdrop of South Korea's authoritarian industrialization and U.S. hegemony in East Asia. Ingu Hwang details how local prodemocracy protesters were able to translate their sufferings and causes into international human rights claims that highlighted how U.S. Cold War geopolitics impeded democratization in South Korea. In tracing the increasing coalitional ties between local pro-democracy protests and transnational human rights activism, the book also calls attention to the parallel development of counteraction human rights policies by the South Korean regime and US administrations. These counteractions were designed to safeguard the regime's legitimacy and to ensure the US Cold War security consensus. Thus, Hwang argues that local disputes over democratization in South Korea became transnational contestations on human rights through the development of trans-Pacific human rights politics. Human Rights and Transnational Democracy in South Korea critically engages with studies on global human rights, contemporary Korea, and U.S. Cold War policy. By presenting a bottom-up approach to the shaping of global human rights activism, it contributes to a growing body of literature that challenges European/U.S. centric accounts of human rights advocacy and moves beyond the national and minjung (people's) framework traditionally used to detail Korea's democratic transition.

Empathetic Policy Design

Palgrave M 出版
2025/02/08 出版

This book sets out to develop a policy design process that is more inclusive by creating space for emotions and feelings. Rather than focus solely on expert knowledge, it places the fears and hopes of citizens at the heart of policy design, to facilitate meaningful interactions between policymakers and the citizens they serve. Focusing particularly on evidence from Thailand, but drawing on case studies from around the world, the book argues that empathetic policy design is crucial to foster social learning and better-informed policies. It also focuses on how emotions can be incorporated into policy design, and how policymakers of the future might use these design processes to create and implement policies that will benefit all. The book will appeal to all those interested in public policy and policy design.

Story Tech

2025/02/08 出版

Personal stories have the power to stir the heart, compel us to act, and spark social change. While advocacy organizations have long used storytelling in campaigns, the role technology plays has increased. Today, invitations to "share your story" are widespread on advocacy organizations and political campaign websites, calls to action, and social media pages. But what happens after one clicks "share"? And how does this affect which voices we hear--and which we don't--in public discourse? Story Tech explores the increasingly influential impact of technologies--such as databases, algorithms, and digital story banks--that are usually invisible to the public. It shows that hidden "story tech" enables political organizations to treat stories as data that can be queried for storylines and used to intervene in news and information cycles in real time. In particular, the authors review successful story-centered campaigns that helped change dominant narratives on disability rights, marriage equality, and essential workers' rights in the United States and Australia. They compare the use of storytelling advocacy across different types of organizations including volunteer grassroots groups, large national advocacy coalitions, and trade unions, and examine how trends differ for storytellers, organizers, and their technology partners. As political stories shift to being "on demand," they reshape power relationships in key public debates in ways that produce moments of tension as well as positive narrative change. Story Tech examines these trends and illustrates how storytelling success can--and should--be achieved in conjunction with personal dignity, privacy, and empowerment for storytellers and their communities, particularly marginalized ones.

Spatial Stories and Intersecting Geographies

Ingram 出版
2025/02/07 出版

Ebook available to libraries exclusively as part of the JSTOR Path to Open intiative. This book provides a fresh account of the literary and journalistic connection between Hong Kong, China, and Britain, and the different forms of literary production and cross-cultural encounters that emerged from 1890 to 1940. Through close reading of literary texts written by Hong Kong, British, and Chinese writers, as well as archival research of under-explored periodicals, historical and biographical materials, it critically examines the various forms of transnational encounters, networks, and fissures in these places that were historically connected since the second half of the nineteenth century. By putting established and under researched writers of different cultural backgrounds together for analysis, this book engages with multiple perspectives and counterpoints when exploring different and intersecting cultural and historical contexts, as well as the various symbolic and actual print worlds that emerged during this transformative period. It also aims to redirect attention to Hong Kong as one of the key locales to consider questions of representation, modernity, transnational movement, colonial and postcolonial politics, and various literary and cultural responses to local and global issues. Drawing on literary and cultural theories, spatial theories, and critical perspectives in cultural geography and urban studies, this book demonstrates the significance of everyday spaces in shaping individual experiences and perceptions. It shows that these spaces are major sites of contested representations in selected literary texts as well as key locales through which questions of identity, race, colonial politics, spatial boundaries and their limits, are explored, negotiated, and debated.

Military Families, Political Violence, and Transitional Justice in Argentina

Palgrave M 出版
2025/02/06 出版

Perpetrators within? provides the first ethnographic account of the experiences of military families of the Argentine dictatorship (1976-83). At the crossover of multiple disciplines, this groundbreaking study brings advancements in the fields of military and conflict studies, Latin American history, transitional justice and ethnographic methods. The military juntas that seized power in Argentina in 1976 waged a brutal 'dirty war' against communism, leading to seven years of authoritarian rule that claimed thousands of lives. The regime suppressed political opposition through kidnapping, torture, and clandestine executions. Although efforts to bring the military to justice began in 1985, legal obstacles delayed prosecutions for over 20 years. It wasn't until 2005 that trials resumed, resulting in the conviction of hundreds of former officers for crimes committed during the dictatorship. Perpetrators within? questions these unique subjects directly. For the first time, the military of the dictatorship are approached as a community of families and comrades (which includes spouses, children and 'brothers in arms') better to understand the personal and collective experiences of those linked to the regime's violent past. Based on extensive research with former junior officers -many now imprisoned - their wives and adult children, the book unveils the social and family life of the military of the 1970s, it investigates the everyday unexceptional scenarios of repression, and it describes the long road to justice from the point of view of military families involved in the trials. A vital contribution to understanding the workings of kinship, military power and violence, this book offers a deeper ad original perspective on one of the darkest chapters in Latin American history.

A SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Piers Morgan welcomes the return of a common-sense world They claimed it was a movement that would change society forever. Instead, it's been buried six feet under by common sense. For a decade, "woke" infected every corner of our lives. Cancel culture ran riot. Men became toxic. Virtue signalling was everywhere. And if you dared disagree? You'd be terminated on the spot. But then something extraordinary happened. All over the world, people woke up.In this explosive and uproarious takedown, Piers Morgan charts the spectacular collapse of the most ridiculous ideology in human history. With his trademark wit and fearless honesty, he exposes the hypocrites, destroys the myths, and celebrates the heroes who refused to surrender to the woke brigade.Inside, Morgan takes aim at the madness wherever it's hiding and calls out the absurdity with humour, logic, and outrage. He pulls no punches as he tackles: Hollywood hypocrisy - when celebrity virtue-signaling became it's own performance Environ-mentalists - how saving the planet turned into shouting about plastic straws Go Woke, Go Broke - from brand deals to the price of moral posturing Word Police - the battle over language and what you can and can't say And much more But this isn't just about pointing and laughing at the wreckage. With his unique blend of savage humour and surprising wisdom, Morgan offers a roadmap for navigating our post-woke world and a less divided, more sensible society. Woke is Dead is the provocative, hilarious and essential read for anyone who wants to understand how an entire civilisation briefly lost its mind.

Tropical Nature

Ingram 出版
2025/02/05 出版

Across Africa and South-East Asia, the impulse to protect nature often dovetails with the domination of local people. From mass displacement to severe restrictions on land use and daily acts of violence, conservation work risks reproducing Eurocentric modes of colonialism and worsening the effects of the climate crisis. In this insightful and wide-ranging study of the colonial history of conservation, Tropical Nature seeks to provide a much-needed history of the Global South from its own perspective. Comparing case studies ranging from Ali Bongo's Gabon, to the postcolonial African itinerary of the agronomist Arthur Bunting, this volume advances a "small-scale global history" that deciphers the relations binding human societies to the non-human world.

New Turkey and the Far-Right

Selim,Koru  著
Ingram 出版
2025/02/04 出版

Turkey is among a league of revisionist powers who are challenging the world order. Erdogan and his Islamist movement have aimed to create the "New Turkey", preparing for a future that is less dependent on Western treaty allies and with an alliance structure of its own. This book is about the political ideas driving Turkey's regime change and foreign policy. It de-exceptionalizes Turkish politics, arguing that the "New Turkey" is part of a global trend of far-right nationalist movements like that of Donald Trump in the United States or Narendra Modi in India. In particular, the book reveals how far-right nationalist strands in Turkey have been nurtured by an existential resentment of the West, similar to those we are seeing in Russia. In tracing this resentment and its historical roots, the book invites policymakers and experts to better understand the new relationships Turkey is building with fellow revisionists including China and Russia, as well as Turkey's involvement in the wars in Syria and Ukraine and Erdogan's grand strategy for expansion. The book is based on interviews with senior politicians and civil servants from across the country's political spectrum. It also benefits from the author's personal knowledge of Turkey's far-right and Islamist traditions.

Scenes from the American Working Class

Ingram 出版
2025/02/01 出版

What have depictions of the working class in popular culture added to our understanding of the professional lives of Americans? Scenes from the American Working Class: This Hard Land offers twelve unique and profound answers from some of the most impactful and timeless novels (O! Pioneers, Ann Vickers, and Native Son), films (Blue Collar, Wall Street, and Other People's Money), television shows (The Wire and Mad Men), songs (the work of Bruce Springsteen), and poems (Natasha Tretheway's "Drapery Factory, Gulfport, Mississippi, 1956"). Key themes include the turn from agrarianism to industrialism and post-industrialism; the challenges particular to women, new immigrants, and workers of color; and the relationship between the demands of the workplace and the responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. Also explored is the extent to which having a productive and fulfilling working life is essential to living a life of meaning and purpose. Although there is a significant gap between the rhetoric and the reality of the "American dream," these portrayals all give a glimpse into the resiliency and optimism of workers and why the country continues to be a land of hope.

Lobbying for Zionism on Both Sides of the Atlantic

Revealed: How pro-Israel lobbying groups influence the Middle East policies of Britain, the US and others In 1896, a Jewish state was a pipe dream. Today the overwhelming majority of Jews identify as Zionists. How did this happen? Ilan Pappe unveils how over a century of aggressive lobbying changed the map of the Middle East. Pro-Israel lobbies convinced British and American policymakers to condone Israel's flagrant breaches of international law, grant Israel unprecedented military aid and deny Palestinians rights. Anyone who questioned unconditional support for Israel, even in the mildest terms, became the target of relentless smear campaigns. Lobbying for Zionism on Both Sides of the Atlantic shows us how an unassailable consensus was built - and how it might be dismantled.

Cybernetic Circulation Complex

Verso 出版
2025/01/30 出版

An anti-capitalist guide to breaking the power of Big Tech Big Tech firms dominate the global economy. But what value do they actually produce? In this brilliant survey of global tech economy, Nick Dyer-Witheford and Alessandra Mularoni argue that the role of firms like Amazon and Google, Palantir and Uber, is in the automation of circulation. By applying digital technologies to processes of market exchange--everything from advertising and shopping, to logistics and financial services--Big Tech aims to subject these activities to the level of control and predictability that capital has secured in industrial production. But there is a way out of the multiple crises that Big Tech has helped precipitate. If we are to break their grip on the global economy then it'll take more than just antitrust legislation or reducing individual time online. By understanding the central role Big Tech plays in contemporary capitalism, Dyer-Witheford and Mularoni argue that what is required instead is a new, ambitious and comprehensive program of democratic collective planning that can move us beyond capitalism. Cybernetic Circulation Complex offers not only a compelling analysis of the power of Big Tech and their role in our current global crises, but a roadmap for a new form of life: biocommunism, a digital degrowth that can help us steer between the double boundaries of ecological sustainability and equitable social development.

Spaces of Anticolonialism

Stephen,Legg  著
Ingram 出版
2025/01/29 出版

Spaces of Anticolonialism is the first book-length account of anticolonialism in Delhi, as the capital of Britain's empire in India. It pioneers a spatial governmentality analysis of the networks, mobilizations, and hidden spaces of anticolonial parrhesia, or courageous speech and actions, in the two decades before independence in 1947. Reading across imperial and nationalist archives, newspapers, memoirs, oral histories, and interviews, Stephen Legg exposes subaltern geographies and struggles across both the new and old cities, which have traditionally been neglected in favor of the elite spaces of New Delhi. Presenting the dual cities as one interconnected political landscape, Legg studies Indian National Congress efforts to mobilize and marshal support between the mass movements of Civil Disobedience (1930-34) and Quit India (1942-43). The book's six chapters compare the two movements in terms of their public spaces of nonviolent anticolonialism, their problematization by violence, and their legacies. This bottom-up analysis, focused on the streets, bazaars, neighborhoods, homes, and undergrounds of the two cities, foregrounds the significance of physical and political space; it highlights the pioneering role of women in crafting these spaces; and it exposes the microtechniques that Congress used to encourage Gandhi's nonviolence and to tolerate its testing in the face of the rising popularity of the radical left. Legg's rereading of Michel Foucault's final lectures on parrhesia produces a bold new approach to questions of postcolonialism, resistance, and South Asian governmentalities. This allows anticolonialism to be read not as an outside but as a coherent and bottom-up project of self-transformation and space-making that was elite coordinated but whose sovereignty lay with a disobedient and not always nonviolent public. This book provides an innovative and restive historical geography of spaces of anticolonialism in the capital of contemporary India's 1.4 billion people.

Labor against the Regime

Ingram 出版
2025/01/29 出版

How do worker movements emerge and evolve under authoritarian regimes? What enables labor activists to overcome constraints and win concessions, and what leads to demobilization? Nadine Abdalla provides an inside look at two of Egypt's most significant worker protest movements in the years preceding the 2011 Arab uprisings. Through a fine-grained analysis of the labor movement at the Misr Spinning and Weaving Company in Al-Mahalla Al-Kubra and the State Employees Movement of the Real Estate Tax Collectors, Labor Against the Regime reveals the pivotal role played by activist leaders in shaping a movement's trajectory. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, interviews, and primary sources, Abdalla traces how these movements overcame daunting odds to first take shape, achieve socio-economic demands, and ultimately challenge the Mubarak regime's corporatist control over labor relations. The book explores how activist leaders' personal backgrounds, careers, and embeddedness within movements conditioned their choices--ultimately steering protests down different pathways of contestation and institutionalization. As one of the first book-length studies to comparatively analyze Egypt's labor activism before and after the Arab Spring, Labor Against the Regime provides vital insights into the changing relationship between workers, social movements, and the pre-uprising political order.

The Political Army

Ingram 出版
2025/01/28 出版

Since World War II, the U.S. military has taken a keen interest in shaping press coverage and, through it, public perception and democratic oversight of the armed forces. After misjudging the domestic political landscape during the Vietnam War, Army leaders embraced media management, recognizing that control over information had become central to how wars are fought. Even as the Army presented itself as a scrupulously apolitical organization, its leaders strove to reshape their political environment through public relations. This book tells the story of the U.S. Army's deepening involvement in media management over six decades and offers new ways to understand the military as a political actor. Thomas Crosbie examines how the Army gradually transformed its relationship with the civilian government and the public by engaging with the press. He traces Army media management from its origins as an ad hoc task to its professionalization and formalization, alongside the Army's rise as a political force, its precipitous fall in the Vietnam War era, and its renewed ascent after learning key lessons from the experience of Vietnam. The Political Army draws on the records of Army leaders, archives of major public affairs figures and organizations, and extensive interviews with war correspondents, public affairs officers, and senior Army staff. Demonstrating how the U.S. Army gained, at great expense, potent political sway, this book provides a theoretically rich account of military politics and what it means for democracy.

In Wolf's Clothing

Alfred,Carry  著
Ingram 出版
2025/01/26 出版

On July 15, 2018, in Washington, DC, a young Russian woman named Maria Butina was arrested by the FBI and charged with acting as a foreign agent. Branded a "red sparrow," trained seductress, and Kremlin spook, Butina faced years in prison and a lifetime of infamy. Meanwhile, down Pennsylvania Avenue, Midwesterner Alfred Carry was a rising star in the pro bono world after a win before the DC Court of Appeals. But before he could settle into a new position in private practice, Carry would find himself representing the only Russian arrested for crimes against the American people during the 2016 election. Diving in to protect Butina from the onslaught of the government's case, the Twitterverse accused Carry of treason. Partners demanded he drop the case. Friends and family worried that he was ruining his career before it had even started. Yet this was only the beginning of a case that would transform Carry's life and his understanding of American society. A Russian nesting doll of two-time con men, charming billionaires, sniping media figures, CIA back channels, and clandestine operatives, In Wolf's Clothing: My Story Representing Maria Butina, the Most Famous Woman in Moscow is the first-person account of how a young attorney is thrust into the public eye to defend a woman accused of attacking the country he loves. With the taut storytelling of a spy thriller, the inside baseball of legal nonfiction, and the social insight of a criminal justice expos矇, at its core, this is a true and honest account of a young woman swept up in the criminal justice system and the young lawyer sworn to defend her.

The Architect of Espionage

Ingram 出版
2025/01/26 出版

From a New York Times bestselling author and an expert on Middle Eastern conflict comes a riveting biography of Meir Dagan, the legendary Mossad director who transformed Israel's intelligence service into a global powerhouse of espionage and counterterrorism. In The Architect of Espionage, Samuel M. Katz masterfully chronicles the life of Meir Dagan, a visionary covert warfare veteran who revolutionized the art of intelligence and espionage. Born in the shadows of the Holocaust, his life personified the modern history of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. Dagan's journey embodies decisive action, innovative thought, and bold leadership under fire. His tenure as the head of the Mossad marked a transformative era in Israel's history, reshaping the agency into a formidable global force. Dagan's story is one of daring strategy and relentless ingenuity. He spent thirty-two years in uniform, and under his eight-year leadership, Mossad orchestrated a series of high-stakes missions, including targeted assassinations, clandestine attempts to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear power, and the covert expansion of Israel's strategic collaborations with members of the global intelligence fraternity, notably with the CIA. These operations not only bolstered Israel's security but also altered the geopolitical dynamics of the Middle East. Drawing on unprecedented access to Dagan's closest confidants, comrades in arms, and contemporaries in the international intelligence community, Katz brings to life the portrait of a spymaster whose influence extended far beyond Israel's borders, shaping intelligence relationships across the Middle East and worldwide. Katz's expertise in Middle Eastern conflicts and counterterrorism shines through in this meticulously researched narrative that delves into the intricate details of Dagan's strategies. The Architect of Espionage is more than a biography--it is the history of the Jewish state told through the life of one of its most incredible warriors, spy chiefs, and, ultimately, statesmen. The Architect of Espionage is an immersive journey into the shadowy world of intelligence, where decisions carry life-or-death stakes and outcomes are steeped in secrecy. For anyone captivated by espionage thrillers or historical biographies, this is an essential and timely read, providing an insightful glimpse into the mind of one of the most influential spymasters of our era.
