Reinventing the Chinese City
Since the late 1970s, China has undergone perhaps the most sweeping process of urbanization ever witnessed. This is typically understood as a story of growth, encompassing rapid development and economic dynamism alongside environmental degradation and social dislocation. However, over the past decade, China's leaders have claimed that the country's urbanization has entered a new stage that prioritizes "quality." What does China's new urban vision entail, and what does the future hold in store? Richard Hu unpacks recent trends in urban planning and development to explore the making and imagining of the contemporary Chinese city. He focuses on three key concepts--the "green revolution," "smart city movement," and "great innovation leap forward"--that have become increasingly influential. Through case studies of Beijing, Hangzhou, and Hefei, Hu analyzes how attempts to achieve greater sustainability, promote data-driven governance, and foster innovation have fared on the ground. Wind Power Policies and Diffusion in the Nordic Countries

Ideas and European Education Policy, 1973-2020
This book analyses the transformation of European Education Policy from 1973 to 2020. In doing so, it offers a unique insight into the changes of European education from a predominantly national concern to a supranational policy framework, driven by an economic discourse concerning productivity and employability. The book shows that the idea of the "Europe of Knowledge" did not originate in the Lisbon Strategy of 2000, but rather was the result of a gradual development that started in the mid-1980s. This begun with the establishment of a specific problem definition of education as a solution for Europe's lack of competitiveness, a definition that was incrementally constructed by the European Commission and the European business community. Highlighting significant and unexplored questions such as the role of European transnational business in education and the role of the "problem entrepreneur" in defining policy issues, this book will provide a comprehensive perspective on European Education Policy that will be of interest to all students of European Politics, Education Policy, and Public Policy.
The Economics of Family Taxation
This book reflects the reality of most taxpayers. It provides a comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of optimal tax issues from a household economics perspective. A unified and integrated approach is employed to analyze optimal taxation in a homogeneous way.The author adopts a household production approach to allow a critical understanding of the way tax policy impacts economic agents. This way home activities can be studied with the same toolbox normally employed for the market activities. This is motivated by the fact that in reality most agents act from within a family, and their interaction with the economy at large and tax policy in particular is mediated by the interdependence of the family members' choices, although taxation is typically studied in a framework in which the economic agents are isolated individuals. The aim of the book is to provide, a comprehensive treatment of family taxation whithin this approach, focusing on the normativeside - social welfare maximising taxation.As a consequence of the book's analysis, many important and established results in public economics may have to be revised. The book will be useful to both graduate students and researchers alike in that it adopts a rigorous analytical language but also includes ample intuitive explanations.
Queer Politics in Contemporary Turkey
Drawing on the words and stories of queer Turkish activists, this book aims to unravel the complexities of queer lives in Turkey. In doing so, it challenges dominant conceptualizations of the queer Turkish experience within critical security discourses. The book argues that while queer Turks are subjected to ceaseless forms of insecurity in their governance, opportunities for emancipatory resistance have emerged alongside these abuses. It identifies the ways in which the state, the family, Turkish Islam and other socially-mediated processes and agencies can expose or protect queers from violence in the Turkish community.

Children and Young People's Participation in Child Protection
Children's participation in child protection has become a burgeoning field of interest for scholars and practitioners in the field of social work, and yet there is no edited volume that weaves together recent international contributions on the topic. This volume fills that gap, beginning with the assumption that children can and should have agency in decisions that affect their lives. Child protection is understood as protection from violence in the family and from violence in wider society. Children and youth may encounter public child protection systems in several instances: during child protection investigations, when children receive support services, during decisions about children's removals from home, and when children are in foster, kin, or residential care. Children may experience systemic violence as a lack of personal and economic security, a lack of access to education, and other factors. This book features pathways to children and young people's collective participation in changing child protection policies and services in multiple countries through examples of participatory research and practices promoting children and young people's participation in child protection. It highlights the change actions and voices of empowered and marginalized children and youth in various international contexts. The global examples featured in this volume can serve as an inspiration for children and youth, children's rights activists, child protection practitioners, students, scholars, and public policymakers to initiate, design, and implement participatory child protection policies and practices.

Religion and China's Welfare Regimes
This book presents the welfare regime of China as a liminal space where religious and state authorities struggle for legitimacy as new social forces emerge. It offers a unique analysis of relations between religion and state in the People's Republic of China by presenting how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) tries to harness Buddhist resources to assist in the delivery of social services and sheds light on the intermingling of Buddhism and the state since 1949. This book will appeal to academics in social sciences and humanities and broader audiences interested in the social role of religions, charity, NGOs, and in social policy implementation. The author explores why the CCP turns to Buddhist followers and their leaders and presents a detailed view of Buddhist philanthropy, contextualized with an historical overview, a regional comparative perspective, and a review of policy debates. The Politics of the Rule of Law in the Eu Polity
This book analyses the challenges facing the European Union through the frame of the rule of law. It shows how over the last decades the increased dissensus and contestation of the rule of law has given rise to heightened tensions between national and EU institutions, leading to the establishment of new soft and hard policy tools to safeguard it at the supranational level. The book proposes a comprehensive and multifaceted analysis of the current state of debates by exploring how EU institutional actors seek to uphold the Union's values. It shows that European integration in core state powers is the outcome of the clash between liberal and anti-liberal ideas, between dissensus and contestation over how collective problems should be solved, in a community of voices featuring assent and dissent, all of which give democracy its substance. Beyond the analysis of the emerging EU's rule of law policy, the book will help readersto better understand the EU's fragilities and resilience and the potential challenges for the future of EU integration.
After the Wars
Examines the perspectives of actors other than the U.S. government-states and nonstate actors-on the wars in which the United States participated, and assesses the extent to which these actors learned lessons that have implications for their long-term foreign, security, and other important policies, and for their major future actions. Eventually and perhaps indirectly, many of these lessons may affect U.S. policymaking and national interests. Some of these implications already are evident and seem significant, meaning it is important for U.S. decisionmakers and for scholars-preferably sooner than later-to understand, take account of, and in some cases prepare for manifestations of these lessons. Other ramifications of these learning processes undoubtedly will not be apparent for some time to come.
