Reimagining Peace Through Process Philosophy

Palgrave M 出版
2025/03/09 出版

This book explores the ways in which process philosophers extend and strengthen peace scholars' outlines of a paradigm of/for peace. It then illustrates the value of such a peace paradigm through the example of the climate breakdown, showing how process thinking and process metaphysics intervene at the roots of a global systemic crisis. In doing so, it articulates a new inroad to process philosophy, and illuminates an integrative intervention in the systemic crises of climate change and global inequality. The "static-process framework" developed in this book makes the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead and the fields he has inspired easier to grasp, and offers a tool to assist in the application of process thought to a multitude of issues. This framework depicts tensions between two modes of thought--static and process thinking--according to five "basic orientations" abstract/context, closed/open, isolating/relational; passive/generative; one/multi-dimensional. This pattern is mapped across the domains of metaphysics, economics, politics and as the basis for a new mode of living and organising across multiple layers of society.

Times of Transformation

2025/03/08 出版

Studies the significance of the 1921 Canadian election, the first after World War I. Times of Transformation positions the watershed 1921 Canadian federal election in the context of activist efforts and the revolutionary mood in the years following the Great War. New Liberal leader William Lyon Mackenzie King, who went on to become Canada's longest-serving prime minister, came to power, with his party capturing every Quebec seat. This election brought many Canadian firsts: women were eligible to vote for the first time; it was the first minority government; and it was the first effective fracturing of the two-party system, with the establishment of a federal Labour party and the dramatic rise of the Progressives. These changes had been brewing before the end of the war. The Progressive Party owed its success to the increased politicization of farmers and the concerns of the Western voting base. Suffrage came after a decades-long battle for political rights for women. Labor strikes swept the nation in the post-Great War era and a new national Labour party gained Commons representation. In short, this election manifested long-building forces for change and the global zeitgeist of postwar disillusionment and hope.

Line of Control

India Viking 出版
2025/03/07 出版

Happymon Jacob was given the unique opportunity to see the border between India and Pakistan from both sides. He travelled with the armies of both countries and could study what is effectively the ground zero-the location where entrenched animosities as well as sudden surges of comradeship are enacted. This is one of the most fortified places on the planet.Jacob writes, 'I was keen on getting into their world, the world of men in uniform, fighting each other and yet respecting each other. It was a curious world. It had breath-taking adventure, mind blowing stories and unforgettable heroism. I loved it, and I was welcome.'This vividly told, fast paced narrative brings the border area to life. Jacob was given unprecedented access by the Indian and Pakistani armies and he explores how the border is seen-both in the popular imagination and by those who exist in its shadow. He chronicles the lives of civilians and soldiers, their courage and resilience in the face of constant danger and the extraordinary similarities between the two sides.

The Royal and Russian Navies

David,Fields  著
Ingram 出版
2025/03/07 出版

Before the political rupture between Russia and the West--triggered by Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the invasion of Ukraine in 2022--the Royal Navy and the Russian Navy engaged in a complex programme of military cooperation. From 1988, the Royal Navy first collaborated with the Soviet Navy, then the Russian Federation Navy, culminating in a 1998 Memorandum of Understanding on naval cooperation. This book explores that unique period, examining how both navies operated and the lessons Russia drew about maritime power in advancing its global interests. With the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and growing tensions between Russia and the Euro-Atlantic community, the maritime domain remains a critical arena for defence, deterrence, and potential military dialogue. The lessons from this era of cooperation offer valuable insights for navigating an uncertain future.

Digital Surveillance in Africa

Tony,Roberts  著
Zed Books 出版
2025/03/07 出版

Media coverage and scholarly research on digital surveillance has focused primarily on the USA and Europe. Everyone knows about Cambridge Analytica's social media surveillance; Edward Snowden's revelations of the West's mass internet and phone surveillance; and Pegasus Spyware's mobile phone surveillance of activists, journalists, judges, and presidents across the world. Comparatively little is known about the millions of dollars now being spent on digital technologies for use in the illegal and illegitimate surveillance of citizens in Africa. In this open-access third volume of Bloomsbury's Digital Africa series, a broad range of African and European scholars and practitioners map the development, procurement and (mis)use of the ever-expanding suite of digital surveillance and policing technologies across the continent. Drawing on the empirically rich, theoretically sophisticated research of the African Digital Rights Network, this book examines how public and private actors in Africa use spyware, mobile phone extraction, biometric and face recognition systems, and other technologies for smart-city and other social, and social-control, applications. Eight chapters examine eight African countries, and each of these begins with a thorough political history of the nature of surveillance there under colonial and post-liberation political settlements. This enables new analyses of the socio-cultural, political, and economic drivers and characteristics of contemporary digital surveillance in each country, all of which ultimately leads to concrete policy recommendations at local, national, and international levels. For its empirical richness and breadth, as well as its theoretical sophistication, Digital Surveillance in Africa is essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary African studies, and it is of keen interest to anyone concerned with how digital surveillance affects everyday lives across the world. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com.

Countering History Denialism

Ingram 出版

Written by internationally-known 'comfort women' scholars and redress activists, this book critically examines and evaluates the erroneous claim that Japanese and Korean 'comfort women' (KCW) were voluntary prostitutes with labor contracts, rather than sexual slaves. It also critically evaluates many unsubstantiated arguments and unjustifiable criticisms of the redress movement led by the Korean Council.

Canadian Urban Governance in Comparative Perspective

Kristin,Good  著
Ingram 出版
2025/03/06 出版

What does a comparative approach add to our understanding of Canadian municipal government, city governance, and municipal policy-making? Canadian Urban Governance in Comparative Perspective brings together experts in the field to situate Canada within global debates about the place of municipalities in democratic constitutions and systems of (multilevel) governance. The contributors offer a comprehensive coverage of Canadian municipal government and governance. The book explores the conceptual and institutional foundations of Canadian municipal systems by placing them in comparative perspective; highlights seminal works by Canadian scholars to show how comparison adds to our understanding of municipal institutions and city governance; and conceptualizes the place of municipal governments in Canada's multilevel system. It analyzes comparisons of major elements of municipal systems and examines some of the most important urban and global policy challenges of our time, including the politics of growth and development, climate change, immigrant settlement, addressing racism, municipal-Indigenous relations, and tackling poverty and social polarization.Ultimately, the book invites readers to reflect upon and assess the extent to which Canada's current municipal systems are up to the task of contributing to effective and equitable responses to contemporary urban challenges and to enriching democratic life in Canada.

The End of the Soviet World?

Pawel,Kowal  著
Ibidem Press 出版
2025/03/06 出版

This is the fourth volume prepared by the initiators of the Three Ukrainian Revolutions (3R) project ongoing at the College of Europe in Natolin since 2016. The present collection of essays analyses the changes that have taken place in the post-Soviet space since 1991 and which have determined both the process of democratization and the return to authoritarianism in the new republics. Since 2022, researchers gathered around the 3R project have been asked: Had there been no revolutions and mass pro-democratic protest in Ukraine and other post-Soviet states, would there also be no war today? Answers to this and similarly intriguing questions are provided by: Dominique Arel, Marek Cichocki, Kinga Anna Gajda, Alexandra Goujon, Pawel Kowal, Magdalena Lachowicz, Wojciech Michnik, Georges Mink, Justyna Olędzka, Olga Onuch, Iwona Reichardt, Anton Saifullayeu, Kacper Wańczyk, Andrew Wilson, Kateryna Wolczuk, and Oksana Zabuzhko.

Confronting Illiberalism

2025/03/06 出版

Illiberalism and liberalism compete for the attention of Canadians today. The latter honours values and features that we associate with Western democracies, particularly their democratic institutions and politics, established freedoms, equality of opportunity, and market economies. Illiberal voices challenging them have become more prominent in our politics, universities, and schools and in public administration generally. These voices disparage historical understandings of Western democracy and seek to fundamentally alter its features and values. In Confronting Illiberalism, Peter MacKinnon argues that the liberalism that has been a foundation of Canadian democracy is in decline, resulting in diminished freedom of expression, a deteriorating political and policy environment, and fraying social cohesion. The book investigates claims that are made in the name of freedom, the decline of our politics, the increase of hate crimes, the persistence of inequality, and the vulnerability of our institutions. Confronting Illiberalism calls upon Canadians to challenge and resist illiberal influence and to restore liberalism to a central place in our public lives.

Understanding Contemporary Russian Militarism

Ibidem Press 出版
2025/03/06 出版

Russian perceptions of the deep crisis after the demise of the USSR led certain circles in Moscow to conclude that an "Anglo-Saxon" anti-Soviet clandestine information war had nearly destroyed Russia. Russian political-military elites decided that the nature of war had changed, and Moscow must fight back with what is considered a New Generation War--a perpetual subversion of the West. Such a faulty conclusion was not inevitable, and peace is not impossible on mutually acceptable terms. These could be based on the just war theory rooted in the Christian values Russia professes as a source of its moral superiority over the West.

Far from Eutopia

Ross,Clark  著
Ingram 出版
2025/03/05 出版

In 2020, after three and a half years of bitter negotiations, Britain left the European Union. For some it was a day of freedom, for others a tragedy which would leave Britain isolated and poorer. Vote Brexit, the Remain campaign warned us, and it would be an act of self-harm. The economy would collapse, sending prices and unemployment soaring. Meanwhile, in contrast to xenophobic, inward-looking Britain, the EU would soar ahead without us. But is that really what has happened? Ross Clark reveals just how badly the EU is doing - and how in many ways Britain is doing better. Since Brexit, for example, the UK economy has grown faster than Germany's. In spite of inflation which followed the pandemic and the invasion of Ukraine, Britain has the lowest food prices in Europe. The air is cleaner than in many countries. Surveys repeatedly suggest there is less racism and xenophobia in Britain than in almost any other European country. For years, European economies have been far more sluggish than those of other developed countries. In the absence of economic growth and with high migration, European societies are strained. The far right is advancing and public disillusionment with the EU growing quickly. While Britain shares many of Europe's problems to a greater or less extent, this hard-hitting polemic argues that it now has the means to disentangle itself from the EU's draw strings set off on a more prosperous path.

Borders in Red

Ingram 出版
2025/03/05 出版

Borders in Red shows how Lenin and his Bolshevik leadership embraced the nationality question as a way of managing diversity and institutionalized it as a means of governance. Stephan Rindlisbacher uses the making of national borders as a lens through which to examine the Bolsheviks' fundamental shift from proletarian internationalism to ethnonational federalism sui generis. Comparing how party and state managed issues of national diversity in the core regions of Soviet federalism--Ukraine, the South Caucasus, and Central Asia--Rindlisbacher provides insights into their policymaking and into the roots of current territorial conflicts. President Putin has condemned Lenin's nationality policy to be a historical mistake, and with its war against Ukraine, Russia has tried to revise borders that date back to the early days of the Soviet state. However, Borders in Red shows that the Soviet Republics were not arbitrarily divided by leaders like Stalin or Khrushchev. They were the result of long-lasting debates involving politicians, experts, and people from the border regions. The developing Soviet order was a product of trial and error. Thanks to generous funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation, the ebook editions of this book are available as open access volumes through the Cornell Open initiative.

U.S. Defense Policy Toward Israel

Routledge 出版
2025/03/05 出版

This book examines U.S. defense policy toward Israel during the Cold War, emphasizing arms sales, intelligence sharing, and other security cooperation. It argues that strategic interests drove American policy with other considerations, such as domestic politics and shared liberal values, mattering far less. It begins with the presidency of John F. Kennedy and ends with the presidency of George H. W. Bush with a particular focus on government officials: presidents, secretaries of state, secretaries of defense, national security advisors, other administration officials, and senators and Congressmen. The book explores the primacy of security as American officials feared nuclear proliferation, regional war, and a cut-off of oil supplies. All the while, tensions and often bitter disagreements in the U.S.-Israel relationship abounded over what to do about threats in the Middle East. This volume will be of interest to those studying American relations with the rest of the Middle East and U.S. security partnerships around the world.

Leadership in War and Peace

Routledge 出版
2025/03/05 出版

This book offers a gendered perspective on leadership in war and peace, considering leadership in its complexity and presenting a practical examination of both leadership successes and failures. The work challenges readers to think through and discuss specific aspects of leadership, including how and why leadership diversity matters and the ethical challenges presented by the revolving door of the military-industrial complex. Further, leaders responsible for decisions involving war and peace must be able to understand, appreciate, and communicate effectively with everyone they work with and have a repertoire of leadership styles to use depending on context. The book represents an excellent tool for developing such skills, as it uniquely considers leadership through both male and female lenses, along with the experiences and perspectives of multiple military, government, and industry leaders interviewed by the author, making it both relatable and informative. This book will be of much interest to students of gender studies, leadership studies, defense studies, and military studies in general, as well as military and security practitioners.

Legitimating Austerity

Ingram 出版
2025/03/04 出版

This book reexamines the politics of austerity during the euro crisis, challenging conventional narratives of austerity as either an inevitable economic remedy or an external imposition. Focusing on Greece, Portugal, and Spain, it demonstrates that austerity was a political project shaped and contested across domestic, international, and transnational levels. Drawing on extensive empirical material, the book explores how austerity policies were legitimated in southern Europe and how they evolved throughout the crisis. It analyses the construction of crisis narratives, and the critical role of national actors in rooting the crisis in domestic failure. It examines the implementation of austerity policies, revealing how they were justified but also malleable and contingent upon political work. And it shows how austerity was opposed by an increasingly transnational social movement. The book offers critical insights into the politics of crisis management and the contested legacy of austerity in contemporary debates on how to govern the European economy.

Everyday Politics in Russia

Ingram 出版
2025/03/04 出版

What do Russians really want? Do they want authoritarianism and are they prepared to go along with a war of conquest and destruction? Or do they want something else?A landmark contribution to the field, Morris is the only social researcher to have carried out fieldwork in Russia since the invasion of Ukraine, engaging with communities in Moscow, regional cities, as well as rural areas to bring perspectives on Russian everyday lives that are now entirely inaccessible to the West. Everyday Politics in Russia uses the lens of micropolitics, defined not as politics in miniature but instead as taking seriously the political content of people's normal lives revealed in their practices, interactions and discussions. Based on decades-long interactions with people from a diverse cross-section of society in Russia - from security service officers to factory workers, from unemployed young men to citizen journalists and activists, this is the most comprehensive insight to date into the complexity of Russian attitudes toward war, their government and the post-1991 political trajectory.

Political Change Across Britain and Ireland

Constitutional order across the islands of Britain and Ireland faces critical challenges with the rise of Scottish, Welsh and Irish nationalism, an emerging English consciousness, and Brexit. There is no resolution within the old assumptions about nations, states, sovereignty and borders. Nor can we rely on post-devolution practices in relations among the various governments based on bilateral relations between London and Dublin, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. Instead, Political Change across Britain and Ireland examines the whole web of what has been called the totality of relationships among the peoples of this island, asking difficult questions about identities, institutions and prospects for the future.

China's Quest for Military Supremacy

Joel,Wuthnow  著
Ingram 出版
2025/03/04 出版

China's military has entered a new era. It has acquired modern weapons to rival the world's finest, undergone a massive restructuring under Xi Jinping, and been on the frontlines of territorial disputes with Japan, India, Vietnam, and the Philippines. It is readying forces to be able to seize Taiwan sometime in the next decade. It aims to be a "world-class" military on par with the United States. China's Quest for Military Supremacy provides a broad and accessible exploration of Chinese military power, including relations between the Chinese Communist Party and its army, the strategic worldview of Chinese leaders, military strategy and resourcing, conventional and nuclear modernization, military diplomacy and coercion, preparations for war, and the People's Liberation Army's emerging global role. It also identifies the challenges facing China's military and shows how its focus on supremacy in the region means that it is not yet prepared to fight with the same lethality beyond Asia. Different futures are possible, and the book concludes with a preview of what it might take for a truly "world-class" Chinese military to take the global stage.

EU and Russian Hegemony in the 'Shared Neighbourhood'

Palgrave M 出版
2025/03/03 出版

This book examines the EU's and Russia's policies in Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus through the prism of hegemony, a concept that it applies to both regional actors. The study cross fertilises the literatures on the EU neighbourhood policy, Russia's foreign policy, and the scholarship on power in international relations to arrive at an innovative conceptualisation of the mechanisms of hegemonic power. The comparative lens of the analysis leads to novel findings that advance our understanding of the EU's and Russia's behaviour in the EU's Eastern neighbourhood. In this book, the existing, separate theorisations are subsumed under more generic terms and concepts, thereby rendering EU and Russian modes of influence comparable for empirical analysis. The comprehensive conceptual framework of hegemonic power in shared neighbourhoods is based on three ideal typical mechanisms of hegemonic influence: coercion, prescription, and co-optation. To understand the nature of EU and Russian hegemony in the region, the uses of the three mechanisms by Russia and the EU towards two neighbourhood countries are compared. The focus is laid on EU and Russian actions towards Moldova and Armenia since the beginning of the 2000s and the local perceptions of these actions. Thus, the comparative case study provides insights into the longer developments in this regional order that led to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. The book is intended for scholars and students interested in understanding the broader context of Russia's war in Ukraine. Because of its contribution to the debate on regional powers in shared neighbourhoods, it is particularly useful for researchers analysing the (changing) power dynamics and hegemonic behaviour in this regional order. Furthermore, it offers other scholars an analytical framework to work with when analysing the policies of different regional powers.

Navigating A Complex Terrain

Ingram 出版
2025/02/28 出版

Navigating a Complex Terrain: India's Strategic Engagements with West Asia during the NDA Government is a compelling exploration of how India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, has deepened its ties with one of the world's most dynamic and complex regions. This book brings to life the cultural connections and shared histories that underpin India's strategic engagement with West Asia, offering a fresh perspective on what diplomacy truly means in today's interconnected world. The book unpacks India's efforts to strengthen its bonds with the Gulf nations, driven by energy security, trade, and the lives of millions of Indian expatriates. The narrative also takes readers into the heart of India's balancing act in the Israel-Palestine conflict. It reflects on its historical solidarity with Palestine while exploring the deepening partnerships with Israel in defence, technology, and counterterrorism. It also sheds light on the challenges of navigating ties with Iran amid global tensions and competing interests. From bolstering its partnership with Iran through transformative projects like the Chabahar Port to tackling maritime security challenges in the Indian Ocean, the book showcases how India is harnessing its historic ties while navigating the complexities of a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape. This book doesn't shy away from the tough questions, examining the ripple effects of political turmoil, maritime threats, and India's competition with powers like China. At its core, Navigating a Complex Terrain reveals how India's West Asia policy is not just about strategy-it's about building bridges between people, fostering shared growth, and envisioning a future of mutual respect and cooperation.

Beyond International Intervention

2025/02/28 出版

Studies of statebuilding and peacebuilding have been criticized for their disregard of people living the consequences of intervention projects. Beyond International Intervention takes on the task of engaging with spaces and peoples not usually present in IR scholarship to rethink the very concept of "intervention" by paying close attention to how people actually experience and make sense of those efforts. In particular, the book offers a detailed engagement with ethnographic fieldwork in two policy areas in Serbia--agricultural policy and non-formal youth education. By engaging with subjects, the book not only enhances our understanding of intervention, but also uncovers the limitations of the concept. Katarina Kusic argues that the concept limits what we can observe and theorize, and it prevents researchers from engaging with the people living in spaces of intervention as coeval political subjects. As an alternative, she proposes to foreground improvement over "intervention." This reorientation enables researchers to trace hierarchies beyond the local/international dichotomy, expands fields of visibility beyond those prescribed by interventions themselves, and seriously considers the contradictions at the heart of liberalism.

Unpacking EU Readmission and Return Policy with Non-EU Countries

Palgrave M 出版
2025/02/28 出版

This book offers an in-depth exploration of the European Union's cooperation with non-EU countries on readmission and return, as central components of EU migration policy. It delves into the differences between formal and informal agreements and the factors influencing return rates, critically assessing the 'effectiveness' of cooperation in this contentious policy field. Through a comparative analysis of 57 non-EU countries, the book enhances our understanding of why certain countries cooperate on readmission and/or return. Countries geographically closer to the EU are more dependent and, thus, conclude readmission agreements more often. For countries in Africa and Asia, EU incentives and pressure play a bigger role and influence the cooperation together with domestic administrative capacities and bilateral readmission agreements and closer existing relations. Formal or informal readmission cooperation has a limited impact on return rates with non-EU countries beyond the Eastern neighbourhood. This comprehensive work is an essential reading for academics, policymakers, and policy advocates interested in EU external migration cooperation and the broader dynamics of international migration policy.

National Government Narratives of the EU

Palgrave M 出版
2025/02/28 出版

This book examines and compares government narratives of the EU. It thereby addresses a topical issue of major political importance. Bringing together leading specialists from across Europe, it takes a first step in filling a gap in the scholarly literature where attention has focused mainly on narrative-making at the EU level or societal understandings of 'Europe'. At a time when crises, the rise of Eurosceptic populism and the UK's departure have revealed significant differences in how states view the purpose of the European Union and the significance and value of EU membership, it asks: How do governments explain and justify their relationship with the EU? How do these narratives change over time? What do these visions imply for the EU's future?

Borders in Red

Ingram 出版
2025/02/28 出版

America in the Arctic

Ingram 出版
2025/02/27 出版

As climate change accelerates, the Arctic has become a frontline of global competition. Melting ice, rising temperatures, and swelling seas have made remote regions at once newly accessible and rife with new dangers. Vladimir Putin's Russia has embarked on a substantial military buildup in the Arctic, and China has also turned its attention northward. The United States, however, has only recently begun to reestablish its Arctic presence after many years of waning influence. America in the Arctic offers a timely and compelling case for why the United States must deepen its commitment to a region threatened by climate change and geopolitical rivalry. Mary Thompson-Jones surveys past and present U.S. relations with the Arctic lands: Canada, Iceland, Greenland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Russia. She traces the history of the U.S. presence in the far north from the purchase of Alaska through the Cold War, arguing that lessons from the past should inform America's relationships with its Arctic neighbors today. At its best, U.S. Arctic policy balanced security interests with residents' needs and international cooperation on environmental and regional issues. In recent years, many policymakers scrambling to reassert U.S. leadership have framed their goals solely in security terms. Thompson-Jones argues that climate change now poses the greatest challenge, calling for a new approach that is inclusive of all the Arctic's inhabitants. Bringing together national security expertise and historical insight, this book charts a course for American Arctic policy in a warming world.
