The World Powers and Iran
This book reveals the reasons for and ways in which the Islamic Republic of Iran challenged the world powers, through the pursuit of material and ideational goals, to advance a strong nuclear program in the past decade. The book explores Iran's interactions with the United States of America, the Russian Federation, the People's Republic of China, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the French Republic, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Republic of India, in the period before (2011-2012), during (2013-2016) and after (2017-2021) the finalization of the nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2015. Iran's narratives and actions to build middle power status are examined at length against the backdrop of its attempts to reshape global politics, the Middle East region, and the future of the nuclear nonproliferation regime.
Unleashing Diplomatic Dynamo, Ethiopia Unbound-Western Loss, China’s Rise
For countless years, the author wholeheartedly embraced the responsibility of serving the public, immersing himself in the role of a dedicated public servant and forging a remarkable career as a diplomat. However, his unwavering commitment to liberal strategic ideas, aimed at propelling Ethiopia towards triumph over its multifaceted challenges from all directions, drew the ire of the former regime. In a desperate bid to stifle his progressive vision, they shamelessly attempted to incriminate him. Yet, defying all odds, the author managed to elude political persecution and find refuge in the welcoming embrace of the United States. Furthermore, the author's passion for sharing knowledge and shaping young minds led him to a teaching position at one of the prestigious magnet high schools in Texas. Through his engaging and thought-provoking lessons, he inspired students to think critically, fostering a love for learning and empowering them to become future leaders. With its wealth of knowledge and practical insights, this book is highly recommended for every diplomat or foreign service personnel assigned to Ethiopia or any part of Africa. Its strategic approach to communication paves the way for win-win situations, enabling diplomats to navigate complex negotiations and build fruitful relationships. It serves as a beacon of guidance, empowering diplomats to strategically communicate and contribute to a brighter, more harmonious world.
Protest in South Africa
Popular protest has become a regular feature of post-1994 South Africa. As a young democracy born out of resistance, we may understand the contemporary manifestations of protest as extensions of this broader history. However, it is notably in the context of formal democratic institutions that popular protest has become an increasingly normalised mode of influencing policy, demanding service delivery and forcing change. Protest is constitutive of South Africa's democratic politics, but also reflective of it.Protest in South Africa: Rejection, reassertion, reclamation explores the underpinnings of contemporary protest and both its short-term causes and structural drivers. Focusing on the surge of protest from the mid-2000s, this edited volume provides an overview of the complexity of protest action, the diversity of protest spaces and actors, and responses to protest from both citizens and state. The volume situates its analysis against the backdrop of the global wave of protest witnessed since the turn of the 21 century, while examining protest in South Africa's local and historical contexts.Contributors to the volume examine protests in relation to, among other factors, provision of infrastructure and services, contestations around socio-economic development, issues of citizenship, and demands for inclusive democratic governance. Chapters also examine the role of women in protest action, the policing of protest, and the intersection of protest action with spaces of formal politics. The volume also alerts us to the darker side of protest, and the destruction and division it may foment. It thus considers the prospects of South Africa's evolving, sometimes violent, protest terrain for social and state stability and democratic progress. In the diversity of spaces, sectors and communities of interests in which collective action has emerged, Protest in South Africa: Rejection, reassertion, reclamation shows how protest is underpinned by a rejection of the status quo, a reassertion of interests, and a reclaiming of the political and democratic space.

Contemporary Prime Ministerial Leadership in Britain and Japan
This book analyses prime ministerial leadership in Britain and Japan since 1980. Comparing Britain and Japan reveals leadership trends that might otherwise go unobserved. The book addresses questions important to aspiring politicians as well as scholars, including: What accounts for the short tenure of most Japanese prime ministers? Does comparison with Japan explain the rapid turnover in British prime ministers since 2016? How is the influence of party factions on prime ministerial power evolving in Japan? Are British political parties more factional than commonly acknowledged? And how do changes in media technology affect leadership opportunities and constraints?Thebook draws on the author's experience as a political researcher in both the British and Japanese parliaments and on interviews with over 40 politicians and political journalists working in both countries.

Soldiers of Democracy?
Why do some militaries support and others thwart transitions to democracy? After the Arab Spring revolutions, why did Egypt's military stage a coup to end the transition? Conversely, why did Tunisia's military initially support the transition, only to later facilitate the elected president's dismantling of democracy? In Soldiers of Democracy? Military Legacies and the Arab Spring, Sharan Grewal argues that a military's behavior under democracy is shaped by how it had been treated under autocracy. Autocrats who had empowered their militaries produce soldiers who will repress protests and stage coups to preserve their privileges. Meanwhile, autocrats who had marginalized their militaries produce soldiers who support democratization, but who are also more susceptible to incumbent takeovers and civil wars. The dictator's choice to either empower or marginalize the military thus creates legacies that shape both the likelihood of democratization and the forms by which it breaks down. Drawing on over 140 interviews with civilian and military leaders, and three surveys of military personnel, this scholarly volume illustrates this theory through detailed case studies of Egypt and Tunisia. Grewal also probes the generalizability of the theory through a cross-national analysis of all countries between 1946-2010. Overall, he brings the military front and center to the study of democratic transition and consolidation.

Transforming International Institutions
Transforming International Institutions illuminates how a slow, quiet, subterranean process can produce big, radical change in international institutions and organizations. Drawing on historical institutionalism and interpretive tools of international law, Graham provides a novel theory of uncoordinated change over time. It highlights how early participants in a process who do not foresee the transformative potential of their acts, but nonetheless enable subsequent actors to push change in new directions to profound effect. Graham deploys this to explain how changes in UN funding rules in the 1940s and 1960s--perceived as small and made to solve immediate political disagreements--ultimately sidelined multilateral governance at the United Nations in the twenty-first century. The perception of funding rules as marginal to fundamental principles of governance, and the friendly orientation of change-initiators toward the UN, enabled this quiet transformation. Challenging the UN's reputation for rigidity and its status as a bastion of egalitarian multilateralism, Transforming International Institutions demonstrates that the UN system is susceptible to subtle change processes and that its egalitarian multilateralism governs only a fraction of the UN's operational work.
The Power of the Space Club
Why do nation states choose to develop national space programs? How can they justify national efforts to acquire capabilities by arguing for membership of the space club? This book provides a unique perspective of the past, current and future of space exploration and technological development in world politics. A country that sees itself as a power deserving of a seat at the table of world governance is expected to race for space. Based on a rich and detailed analysis of a range of space programs of states which are not usually at the focus of world politics and its research, the author shows that joining the space club is a legitimate and rational decision. The book provides a different way of looking at international relations, through a relatively under-studied area of policy - the space club.
Countering Violent Extremism in Kenya
Before the rise of the Al-Shabaab, Eastern Africa was home to different organizational nodes of the Al-Qaeda network. Al-Qaeda was responsible for many threats, of which include the August 7, 1998, bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. As terrorism threats have evolved over the years, countermeasures have continued to do the same. Countering Violent Extremism in Kenya: Community, State, and Security Perspectives by John Mwangi Githigaro explores Kenya's historical experiences with terrorism in the pre- and post 9/11 periods as a lens to situate how different stakeholders present the threats of extremism and the associated countermeasures they consider as valuable. The stakeholders presented throughout this book include: security actors, society organizations, academics, and community members. Through extended ethnographic research and fieldwork collected from focus groups within Nairobi and Mombasa between 2016 and 2022, Githigaro offers an opportunity to observe the evolution of counterterrorism interventions in Kenya and the dilemmas this has created around primarily state-society relations, an exploration of how different stakeholders perceive the efficacy of counterterrorism measures, and the appraisal of counterterrorism initiative (CT) interventions that render ongoing CVE interventions less effective.

Transformative Speeches of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike
But thank goodness. Rivers State has just been relieved of the most decadent administration in history, which frittered public resources, sold the State's valuable assets to cronies, increased the debt burden and crippled the State's economy.-Governor Nvesom Ezenwo WikeAs Justice Learned Hand rightly observed: "If we are to keep democracy, there must be a commandment: thou shall not ration justice." Today, the people of Rivers State are beneficiaries of justice in its proper measure. We salute the courage and determination of the Supreme Court of Nigeria to uphold the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the rule of law in our democracy.-Governor Nyesom Ezenwo WikeWe are celebrating political or flag independence. But the need to deliver economic freedom to our country remains the most significant challenge before all of us. Therefore, on this historic day, we should pledge to rededicate our lives to build a united, inclusive and prosperous nation where justice, peace and the rule of law shall reign supreme. We are resilient and highly creative. We can easily overcome our economic predicaments if we all work together with patriotism towards building trust and finding realistic solutions to the challenges buffeting the nation.-Governor Nyesom Ezenwo WikeAs Rivers people, we are proud of our contributions to the unity and progress of the Nigerian nation. We remain committed to preserving the unity and indivisibility of Nigeria. All that we ask in return is justice, mutual respect and adequate recompenses for our contributions and sacrifice to the economic and social progress of the country.-Governor Nyesom Ezenwo WikeIsaac Newton once said, "If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants." It is, therefore, essential to acknowledge that whatever heights I have attained and my contributions to my State, our nation and humanity, it is because people inspired me, believed in me, gave me opportunities and supported me along this journey in diverse ways.-Governor Nyesom Ezenwo WikeWe cannot continue to live in sin or tolerate the devil's evil ways and expect God's grace to flourish and prosper our lands. Therefore, we pray that the Church reflect on the social malaise affecting our country, re-direct its efforts towards transforming our people's lives, minds and attitudes unto righteousness, and restore our society's moral and religious foundations for good.-Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike
Brexit and the Digital Single Market
The Digital Single Market (DSM) 2014-19 was the largest component of the European Union's Single Market programme, comprising numerous Directives, Regulations, and instruments aimed at facilitating cross-border digital services. With one-fifth of service exports stemming from the digital sector, the DSM was vital for the UK, with the EU representing its largest export market. Brexit and the Digital Single Market examines the important historical role of the UK in DSM development, the consequences of Brexit for the UK's digital sector, and future EU and UK policy trajectories. Assessing both vertical sectors and horizontal policies, this book demonstrates how the UK acted as a policy entrepreneur in pushing for a deregulatory framework by exploiting temporal events historically. The current challenges presented by Brexit are discussed in detail, closely observing topics such as the loss of the country of origin principle and freedom of movement, changes to copyright and VAT regimes, complications with cross-border data transfer, administrative procedures, and international taxes on digital products and services. Brexit and the Digital Single Market illuminates how the UK continues to innovate in the digital sector but is constrained by external factors both at EU and global levels. It also considers how EU policy is taking a new direction in its 2020 Digital Strategy programme, which leans towards greater protection of European champions and digital sovereignty, a tightening of its data protection regime, and greater regulatory intervention in digital markets. Timely and unprecedented, Brexit and the Digital Single Market is the first volume to comprehensively cover the implications of Brexit for the EU's DSM. This is an essential read for students and academics in political science and law and those from the civil service and government working within the digital sector.
Rethinking International Rules on Subsidies
Rethinking International Rules on Subsidies assesses the need for the United States and other nations to rethink current international subsidy rules to advance global policy goals, such as tackling climate change. Council on Foreign Relations fellows Jennifer A. Hillman and Inu Manak argue that revised and updated rules can rein in harmful subsidies and create space to pursue important policy objectives without threatening a costly international subsidy war.
Witness
Between the 13th and 25th of March 2022, I had the privilege of being a member of the Somaliland Delegation led by the President of the Republic, HE Muse Bihi Abdi, to the United States of America. The visit represented a turning point in the history of relations between Somaliland and America, and its significance and outcomes have provided much to reflect upon, as this contribution hopes to do.
Thatcher versus Douglas
On May 20, 1957, the small farming community of Mossbank, Saskatchewan was the venue for a face-to-face showdown between two politicians: Saskatchewan Premier T.C. Douglas and federal Liberal candidate Ross Thatcher. This book details the history of the two men, their rise to power, and the events that culminated in the Great Debate of 1957. Who really were Douglas and Thatcher? What guided Douglas' decision to create the numerous Crown Corporations in the post-war years? How did the visions of these two men, who were both originally members of the CCF Party, come to collide and conflict? A great book for anyone interested in the history of T.C. Douglas, the CCF Party, or the political history of Saskatchewan.
Strategies in Changing Global Orders
This book explores the intricate web of economic diplomacy, Asia Pacific strategies, and Mega Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) that shape the region's dynamics. It also examines the European Union's perspective, considering its shared interests with East Asia and the USA. Avoiding military conflicts in sensitive regions such as the Taiwan Straits and the Korean Peninsula is crucial, as the economic ramifications of any such conflicts could be catastrophic on a global scale, fundamentally altering the course of the New Cold War.Divided into four parts, the book begins with an introduction, setting the stage for the ensuing exploration. Part two delves into economic diplomacy, Asia Pacific strategies, and Mega FTAs in East Asia, while part three examines the same themes in the context of the European Union. Finally, part four concludes with insightful remarks that tie together the findings from the preceding sections. As the world teeters on the precipice of a new era defined by global power struggles and geopolitical realignments, this book offers a comprehensive analysis of the pressing issues facing East Asia and the EU. It challenges readers to reflect on history's lessons and find wise solutions through theoretical and practical approaches.
Identity, Ontological Security and Europeanisation in Republika Srpska
This book discusses the impact of the process of accession to the European Union (EU) - i.e. Europeanisation - on the formulation of the ethnic identity of Bosnian Serbs and the political identity of Republika Srpska (RS) in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The centrepiece of the book is an examination of how it is possible that the expected effect of Europeanisation on ethnic identities in a post-conflict environment - a transformation of ethnic identities through desecuritisation - does not materialise in the case of BiH and the RS. The book starts from the assumption that the political elite in the RS uses Europeanisation as a context for the securitization of two sources of threats - the internal and external Other. This prevents the transformation of ethnic identities in BiH, and as a result also the desecuritisation of antagonisms among the ethnic groups of BiH. The results show that any attempt at a more active engagement by the EU and international community was interpreted by the RS political elite as Bosniak agenda aimed against the RS. In this respect, the book demonstrates that BiH's EU accession process or a clearer EU perspective alone in scrutinized critical junctures did not outweigh the potential costs for the RS political elite if reforms aimed at creating a more functional BiH were to succeed. In all three analysed critical junctures, the political elite in RS presented motions for a more functional BiH as attempts to centralise the country and framed them as the beginning of the end for the RS as a political entity.
Canada's Defence Procurement Woes
This book challenges the perceived underlying causes and culprits of the ongoing challenges in Canadian defence procurement, arguing that although headlines often put the blame on the political leadership, the defence procurement bureaucracy, ongoing pressures in the defence industry and continuous demands placed on Canada though its alliances also carry a large part of the responsibility. Focusing on four main case studies: the Fixed Wing Search and Rescue Plane, the Joint Support Ships, the Medium Support Vehicle System and the Halifax Class Modernization, the author offers a comparative analysis of how these ongoing procurement efforts were dealt with by different administrations, from Jean Chr矇tien and Paul Martin to Stephen Harper.

Forging Latin America
A sweeping yet intimate exploration of Latin America's political history, Forging Latin America profiles fifty-two of the region's most influential figures who, for better or worse, have shaped its character and destiny from the Spanish Conquest to the present day. This polyphonic gathering of dictators, reformers, revolutionaries, artists, writers, priests, and activists not only foregrounds the major political developments since 1492 but also spotlights lesser-known stories of hope, change, and resistance from the ground up. Along the way, the book shows how ideas can bring down a government or build one, how power corrodes ideology until the perpetuation of power becomes an ideology in and of itself, and how the intellectual heritage of Latin America has been used, disputed, and reinvented over five astonishing centuries.
Social and Ethical Issues of Global Pandemics
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the weaknesses inherent in the social infrastructure of African states, especially healthcare and social security systems. African states were characterized by a high level of unpreparedness with scientific and technological insufficiency to address the pandemic emergency. This in turn worsened the impact of COVID-19 on all fronts, thus, many African states experienced issues with high mortality rate, rampant job losses, and arbitrary and erratic state responses. Social and Ethical Issues of Global Pandemics: A Southern African Perspective edited by Masake Pilisano Harris and Richard Obinna Iroanya argues that pandemics deepen inequality margins with grave social, legal, and ethical consequences in Southern Africa and beyond. Through empirical and theoretical research, Harris and Iroanya analyze the regulations that were passed during COVID-19 and evaluate the impact and legality of these regulations. The contributors provide information that will help authorities and society appreciate the extent of the effects of the pandemic and its control measures on people's ways of life in the post-COVID era and beyond.
Engaging China
As the strategic rivalry between the United States and China rapidly deepens, growing distrust and fears of China are once again shaping Australian media coverage and public discourse, with potent implications for Australia's China policy. At this crucial historical moment, Engaging China offers a full-throated defence of engagement. This volume brings together a diverse set of Australia's seasoned diplomats, experienced journalists and renowned scholars to assess the current state of Australia-China relations and offer pragmatic advice for how Australia can restore a healthy and stable relationship with China.Over the past five decades, Australia's engagement of China has facilitated a deepening economic relationship alongside expanded cultural, educational and people-to-people exchanges, fostering greater understanding between the two countries and populations. The contributors to this volume share a common vision: Australia and Australians should continue to engage with China and Chinese people for mutual benefit. The chapters take stock of past achievements, identify recent challenges and offer practical suggestions for how the Australian government and Australian firms, institutions and individuals can proactively, productively and securely engage with China.Australia's rich and diverse relations with China extend far beyond the political and economic interactions that tend to dominate news headlines. In explaining how and why an engagement strategy continues to serve Australian interests, Engaging China offers a timely alternative to the prevailing public and policy discourses on Australia's most challenging bilateral relationship."This book offers important insights on Australia's most difficult and consequential foreign-policy challenge. The authoritative authors transcend the simplistic pro-China v anti-China dichotomies that distort so much of our national debate, to capture the true complexity of the issues and explore the real opportunities to manage relations with China to our long-term advantage. It is a fine example of exactly the kind of contribution we need to help us navigate our region's economic and strategic transformation in the difficult decades ahead."Hugh White AO, Emeritus Professor of Strategic Studies at the Australian National University
The Heritage of Central and Eastern Europe
The monograph explores the heritage of Central and Eastern Europe, which is particularly important nowadays in the era of globalization, on the one hand, and nationalism, on the other, and the war on the third hand. It can indicate ways to "face" the challenges Europe is currently facing. The research on the heritage issue aims to foster a greater understanding of the various mechanisms of today's social and political decision-making. This publication is the result of the work of a team of scholars whose research explores the subject of the heritage and who represent countries and cultures belonging to the region. This is, therefore, research done from within according to the Latin principle: "Nihil novi nisi commune consensu" (Nothing new without the common consent). The publication allows defining terms and shows the distinctive features of the culture and value system characteristic of Central and Eastern Europe. It deals with issues related to the commemoration of the region's heritage and the issue of what is excluded from the heritage, what is forgotten, and what is overlooked.
The Russian Way of Deterrence
Selected among Foreign Affairs's "Best of Books 2024" From a globally renowned expert on Russian military strategy and national security, The Russian Way of Deterrence investigates Russia's approach to coercion (both deterrence and compellence), comparing and contrasting it with the Western conceptualization of this strategy. Strategic deterrence, or what Dmitry (Dima) Adamsky calls deterrence ? la Russe, is one of the main tools of Russian statecraft. Adamsky deftly describes the genealogy of the Russian approach to coercion and highlights the cultural, ideational, and historical factors that have shaped it in the nuclear, conventional, and informational domains. Drawing on extensive research on Russian strategic culture, Adamsky highlights several empirical and theoretical peculiarities of the Russian coercion strategy, including how this strategy relates to the war in Ukraine. Exploring the evolution of strategic deterrence, along with its sources and prospective avenues of development, Adamsky provides a comprehensive intellectual history that makes it possible to understand the deep mechanics of this Russian stratagem, the current and prospective patterns of the Kremlin's coercive conduct, and the implications for policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic.

China and Africa in Global Context
This book studies the relationship between China and Africa by reviewing this history and current state of interactions, offering a valuable addition to the often heated and contentious debate surrounding China's engagement in Africa from a Chinese angle. Comprising four parts, the book covers a kaleidoscopic range of topics on China-Africa relations based on materials from different languages. Part I looks into early historical contact between China and Africa and the historiography of African Studies in China in recent decades. Part II probes the origins, dynamics, challenges and cultural heritage of China's policies towards Africa. Part III explores the issue of development cooperation from both a theoretical and a practical point of view, with a focus on the case of Chinese medical teams in Africa and China's technology transfer to the continent. Part IV illustrates bilateral migration, discussing the history and life of Chinese immigrants in Africa and the African diaspora in China. The insights in this book, as well as real life case studies, will make this work an indispensable reference for academics, students, policy-makers and general readers who are interested in international issues and area studies, especially China-Africa relations, China's rise and African development.
African Spirituality, Politics, and Knowledge Systems
Focusing on the three leading religious traditions in Africa (African Traditional Religion, Islam, and Christianity), this book shows how belief in the supremacy of sacred words compels actions and influences practices in contemporary Africa. "Sacred words" are taken to mean holy texts as in divination, the Quran and the Bible. Toyin Falola evaluates how religious leaders engage with sacred words, both orals and texts, engendering practices that reveal the expression of religious beliefs, the impact of those beliefs, and the knowledge contained in them. Attention is given to the key ideas in the words chosen by religious leaders, and how they form a continuous knowledge system, impacting the politics of managing society and people.
