European Integration and the Crisis of Social Democracy
This is a book about European integration and mainstream parties of the left, the main underlying question driving it being: Given that the communist left was fatally wounded by the collapse of the Berlin Wall; given that, since then, the terms 'left' and 'right' have not infrequently been attacked (especially by populists) as being no longer useful for making sense of politics; given that social democracy, understood as 'national Keynesianism' no longer appears to be viable (as reflected in its long-term electoral decline), what does it mean to be on the left in the early 21st century and what can be done to revive its fortunes? Its answer is that being on the left means embracing principles of equality and international solidarity, and that since the nation state is too small to respond effectively to climate change and the other most pressing issues of the present, no viable strategy for left-wing revival in Europe can dispense with European integration as a centralelement, of which European democratisation is a core component.
Beyond Othering
Mohandas K. Gandhi opposed the 1947 partition of British India that created two independent states of India and Pakistan, as he believed that partition politics, rooted in the psychology of othering, would turn South Asia into a near permanent conflict zone. His apprehension was not without basis. The psychology of othering that engendered partition continues to manifest itself in multiple ways, including, but not limited to, interstate wars and communal violence. It permeates not only politics at a higher level but also everyday life. In exploring partition and post-partition developments in South Asia in this interdisciplinary work, Mahapatra and Shekhawat argue for a Gandhian approach to transform the conflict landscape in South Asia. Smart Instead of Small in International Relations Theory
Small States theory supports the argument that small international actors have a vital role in the international system. After 9/11, it emerged as a more focused attempt to show that 'small' can be 'attractive and functional' in an era of normative political and religious radicalism. This book argues that Small States Theory is not relevant to the perplexities of the post-multipolar international system and produces a new theory, the Smart States Theory. Based on structural and neoclassical realism, it attempts to identify the origins of 'state-smartness' in foreign policy, leadership, and domestic politics. State Failure, Power Expansion, and Balance of Power in the Middle East
This book examines the strategies of regional powers in the Middle East regarding their response to cases of state failure in the region, thus connecting the theoretical concepts of statehood, state failure, and revisionist and pro-status quo interventionist behavior. Through a detailed comparative analysis of five case studies of failed states occurring in the region during 1960-2010s -Yemen (1962-1970), Lebanon (1975-1989), Iraq (2003-2020), Yemen (2004-2020), and Syria (2011-2020) - the author employs the conceptual theory of balance of power to analyze the behavior of six regional powers in the Middle East: Egypt, Iran, Israel, Syria (pre-2011), Saudi Arabia, and Turkey toward each one of those cases. The book proposes that when states become failed states, regional powers with revisionist strategies expand into them, which in turn induce status quo regional powers to react by imposing balancing action, and that this power struggle turns failed states into battlegrounds for regional power (im)balances. This book offers empirical and theoretical insights into regional politics of the Middle East over the past six decades, contributes to international policy and security studies scholarship from a Middle East regional perspective, and draws attention to the importance of analyzing the destabilizing and historical consequences of state failures for contemporary contexts.

The Political Economy of Security/Development in the Neoliberal Age
This book builds upon Foucauldian scholarship's compelling interrogations that have contributed to the changing conceptualization of the premises of the discipline of International Relations. This epistemological 'glasnost' facilitates the analysis of the United Nations General Assembly endorsed 'responsibility to protect' (R2P) as not merely a security but a security/development measure. This book unpacks the conditions that on one hand necessitate such measures and on the other hand, allow the subsequent dilution of their radical promise. This framing and analysis of R2P has implications beyond R2P. Increasingly, citizens converted into populations are shepherded by the state to chambers of partial, if not total surrender of civil liberties, standard of living, and well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated such measures for people in the Global South, who since the inception of the post Second World War order continue to await their turn to be the beneficiary ofdevelopment. The development, initially prescribed by the modernization theorists, echoed subsequently in the 1980s by the good governance promoter--World Bank--continues to elude most in the Global South. Indeed, the region's political and economic instability is often the site that renders as a truism, Foucault's upending of Clausewitz's dictum--'War is the pursuit of politics by other means'--with 'Politics is the pursuit of war by other means.' The thanatopolitics (politics of death) of these 'failed, ' 'failing, ' or 'flailing, ' states, is the reason why their populations are seen to be in frequent need for the operationalization of the international community's 'responsibility to protect.'

For the past century the main pillars of this power structure have been continuously reinforced by great scientific and technological innovations in the economy, government, and military as well the international system. If ambitious planning within the World Economic Forum and other global institutions manages to achieve its unprecedented goals, that system will expand further -- toward what has been described as the Great Reset. This would be a global tyranny based on increasingly concentrated (and integrated) economic and governmental power. He has also contributed, in writing and presentations (including several plenary talks) to the Global Studies Association based in Chicago. In 2007 he was recipient of a Career Achievement Award from the American Political Science Association.
