As Pete writes, "God is being, Creator of the universe, you, me, and all of us, who in pure love decided to pour the best of his creative energy in the universe by giving us life so that through life we can reach all our hopes and finally meet forever in his presence."

The Homilies of St. John Chrysostom - Concerning the Statues
Among the events which occurred in the time of John Chrysostom, there is none more memorable than that sedition of the inhabitants of Antioch, in which the Statues of the Emperor Theodosius and Flacilla his wife were thrown down and dragged about the city, at which Theodosius was so exasperated, as even to think of destroying the city entirely. This afforded ample matter for our Chrysostom to exercise his powers of preaching. For as the people of Antioch were fluctuating between hope and fear (sudden accidents offering of course daily some fresh cause for hope or alarm) Chrysostom, compelled as he was to adapt his style to circumstances as they arose, almost always without preparation, delivered on the spur of the occasion these Homilies, which are certainly well deserving of admiration. At one time his object here is to console a people struggling with present distress; at another, to strengthen minds that were sinking under the extremity of danger; and above all, by repeated admonition, to persuade the people of Antioch, on occasion of the threatened calamities, to correct the vices and to wipe away the crimes that had thus provoked God's wrath; which endeavor on the part of Chrysostom certainly ended in results agreeable to his desire, as he sometimes acknowledges.
Faith and Politics
Worship is often thought of as only what is done in a Sunday service. While this is an important element, Scripture teaches that worship encompasses how Christians express their convictions in all spheres of life, including the political realm. This collection of essays explores the relationship between pananampalataya at politika, faith and politics, that unfolds in the political context of the Philippines. Written by experts in their fields, this interdisciplinary book provides a biblical framework and profound theological insights for Christian socio-political engagement in confronting the major issues of poverty alleviation, social justice, global warming, and peacebuilding. Divided in two parts, the essays begin by exploring the need for politically engaged worship through the lens of church, state, and governance. They go on to provide practical insights into contemporary issues, challenges, and prospects for evangelical political engagement. From the Philippines to beyond, these essays are the perfect companion for Christians around the world who seek to creatively develop their vision and mission for strategically engaging in the public sphere to make the world reflect Christ.
Catholic Social Teaching Collection
Catholic social teaching--when it is not distorted or misrepresented--is famously confounding to the pundits and politicos, both left and right. How can the Catholic Church simultaneously advocate against abortion and assisted suicide but for immigration reform and attention to the poor? How can it stand against the abuse of the environment and for the free market, against the death penalty and for the family? This unique Word on Fire Classics collection aims to bring the both/and of the Church's social teaching into sharp relief. That teaching comes roaring out of the Old Testament prophets and the New Testament, into the writings of the Church Fathers, and down through the Church's encyclicals and in the writings of the saints. The Catholic Social Teaching Collection encompasses all of these different dimensions of the Church's history. But its purpose is not just to reveal the ethical and historical breadth of Catholic social teaching; it is to reveal its metaphysical heart--namely, God. With God out of the picture, it is indeed hard to make sense of the array of opinions the Church holds. But with God at the heart of things, the positions fall into harmony, much like the medallions in a rose window. If God exists, then every individual person is a subject of rights, freedom, and dignity. If God exists, then no one is expendable and everyone is equally worthy of respect.
The God Who Bears Our Sorrows
Suffering is the place where every illusion about God collapses-and the place where His true face is revealed. Scripture never treats affliction as an obstacle to faith, but as one of the primary ways the Lord forms His people. From the first exile out of Eden to the final hymns of Revelation, the Bible proclaims a startling truth: God enters the suffering of His children and makes it the very path by which He saves them. The laments of Israel, the wrestling of Job, the fire of the prophets, the agony of the saints, and the Passion of the Only-Begotten all bear witness to the same mystery. The God of the covenant does not remain distant. He descends. He accompanies. He bears the yoke with His people. This book follows that mystery across salvation history to restore a vision many have forgotten: suffering is not evidence of divine absence, but the arena in which God reveals His fidelity most clearly. In the wounds of the world, the Church learns the pattern of her Lord-crucified, risen, and still bearing the marks of love. Why does God permit suffering within the lives of the righteous? How can affliction serve the work of redemption? What does it mean to take up the Cross in union with Christ?Rather than offering slogans or cheap comfort, this work turns to the biblical narrative itself. It traces how suffering enters the story through sin, is purified by covenant discipline, is taken up and transformed in the Body of Christ, and becomes, through grace, a participation in His redemptive love. The Holy Spirit strengthens believers not to escape suffering, but to endure it in communion with the Crucified-where sorrow is united to sacrifice, and sacrifice becomes glory. For those who have cried out to God in their distress and heard only silence, this book invites a new hearing: to stand at Calvary, to behold the Man of Sorrows who carries our griefs, and to discover that no suffering united to Him is ever without purpose, fruit, or resurrection.

Rekindling the Christian Flame
In today's world, many of us have forgotten the vital role that God can play in our lives. We may have walked away from the Christian church, often for good reasons. Yet as we journey through life's struggles, God continues to whisper to us, "You are not alone".Alas, God does not wave a magic wand to fix all our problems, but God longs to draw closer and remind us, "I am with you." Your life reflects the mystery of God. God continually calls out to us, inviting us to notice the sacred presence that has always been there. Perhaps along life's road, through pain or distraction, we've missed it, but it has never left us. This book is an invitation to rediscover that sacred flame. Each chapter invites readers to pause, listen, and engage deeply through reflections, storytelling, Scripture, and personal testimony. While the book acknowledges the complexities of modern life, cultural pressures, family struggles, doubt, failure, and wounds, it also holds space for healing, trust, and hope. So, accept this invitation. Step onto this path. Allow yourself to encounter God in the ordinary rhythms of your day. Let your heart awaken to the quiet presence of something more. And together, let us Rekindle the Christian Flame.
Woman to Woman: Preparing Yourself to Mentor
Many Christian women have come to understand our biblical mandate for life-on-life discipleship of someone younger in the faith. Most women embrace this role, though, with at least some uncertainty about their ability to carry such a great responsibility. A biblically-based personal study, Woman to Woman: Preparing Yourself to Mentor will guide a woman step-by-step through the process of readying herself for such a relationship. This study will help the mentor-to-be to evaluate her own gifts and how they can be used in mentoring, to examine the different possible roles of a mentor, to develop a plan for starting off the mentoring relationship in a positive way and to avoid the dangers that befall mentoring relationships.

The Writings of Victorinus
To me, as I meditate and consider in my mind concerning the creation of this world in which we are kept enclosed, even such is the rapidity of that creation; as is contained in the book of Moses, which he wrote about its creation, and which is called Genesis. God produced that entire mass for the adornment of His majesty in six days; on the seventh to which He consecrated it . . . with a blessing. For this reason, therefore, because in the septenary number of days both heavenly and earthly things are ordered, in place of the beginning I will consider of this seventh day after the principle of all matters pertaining to the number of seven; and as far as I shall be able, I will endeavor to portray the day of the divine power to that consummation.
The Diatessaron of Tatian
The Author of the Diatessaron.-The Diatessaron is such an impersonal work that we do not need to know very much about its compiler. It will suffice here to say that he tells us himself that he was born "in the land of the Assyrians," and brought up a heathen. After travelling in search of knowledge, he settled at Rome, where he became a pupil of Justin Martyr, professed Christianity, and wrote in Greek his Address to the Greeks, translated in vol. iii. of the Ante-Nicene Christian Library. He was too independent in his attitude to maintain a permanent popularity, and after Justin's death left Rome and returned to Mesopotamia. It was probably here that he issued in Syriac his most important work, the Diatessaron, which won such a warm place in the heart of the Syrian church. Among the Greek scholars, however, he became more and more regarded as a heretic, Encratite (ascetic), and Gnostic.
Vintage Saints and Sinners
Outreach Resource of the YearForeword INDIES Award FinalistSaints are people too.The word saint conjures up images of superstar Christians revered for their spectacular acts and otherworldly piety. Weems, Jr., offers a timely roadmap for renewal and growth during this pivotal moment. What Is The Real Gospel? Supernatural Living as God Intends
Why does the Christian life feel so difficult when the gospel is supposed to be good news? Many believers sincerely trust that Jesus died to forgive their sins, yet they spend their lives trying-often unsuccessfully-to live up to Christian expectations. Rules replace relationship. Effort replaces freedom. Guilt replaces joy. What Is the Real Gospel? argues that this struggle is not the result of weak faith or lack of discipline, but of an incomplete understanding of the gospel itself. In this Scripture-rich and pastorally accessible book, Timothy Robert Decker shows that the New Testament presents salvation as far more than forgiveness. According to Scripture, Christ did not only die for sinners; He died as them. In Christ's death, our old self was crucified. In His resurrection, we receive an entirely new life-Christ Himself living in us.Central to this message is a renewed understanding of water baptism-not as a mere symbol or optional act of obedience, but as the Bible's own language of burial and resurrection participation. Tracing baptism through the teachings of Jesus, the book of Acts, and the Epistles, Decker demonstrates how the early church understood salvation as a unified experience of faith, baptism, and new life in the Spirit.Rejecting rule-based Christianity, What Is the Real Gospel? presents a vision of obedience that flows naturally from identity. Like branches connected to a vine, believers bear fruit not by striving, but by remaining united to Christ. The result is a life marked by freedom, transformation, and supernatural normalcy.Further, because He is eternal, this supernatural life of Christ in us is an eternal continuity-"now" is connected to "then"-and we can expect to increasingly shine with His glory, transcending death and being changed to His likeness forever. Written for Christians tired of trying harder, former believers who walked away in frustration, and seekers encountering the gospel afresh, this book offers a liberating return to the power, simplicity, and completeness of the real gospel.
As Yourself
"Love your neighbor as yourself." --Matthew 22:39 What does it mean to love others "as yourself?" For spiritual director, therapist, and former pastor Caroline Vogel, loving God and loving others always came easy. What was much harder, as she discovered during a difficult season in her life, was the "as yourself" part. What did Jesus mean when he said to love others as yourself? In this heartening exploration of learning to love ourselves as God loves us, Vogel invites us to embrace God's deep and abiding love, with our whole being, just as we are, today and every day.Through spiritual practices, Biblical insights, and personal story, Vogel shows us how to move from striving for God's love to simply receiving it. With a gentle and wise voice, Caroline teaches us how to slow down, steady our minds, open our hearts, and tap into the life-giving flow of God's grace that is already within us - calling us out of our perfectionism, fear, or shame, calling us toward our own belovedness.Drawing on her own deep relationship with the Holy Spirit, Vogel reveals that when we are truly aligned with the Spirit and follow Her lead -- mind, heart, and body -- we are being infused by God's grace moment by moment. We are breathing the Spirit and the Spirit is breathing us. We are living embodied grace inside and out.If you struggle to love yourself as God does, yearn to know God's love more deeply, and wonder what it's like to embody grace in your daily life, this book is for you.Welcome to the journey of coming home to yourself in God's love, as yourself. In As Yourself, readers will explore: Why receiving God's love is as important as giving it away. How "hustling" for God's love is the opposite of living embodied grace. How shame is often a barrier to loving ourselves and others. How grace already lives inside us; we simply need to open to that truth. Biblical stories that illuminate the theology of "as yourself." A dozen spiritual practices to help you embody grace.

Breath of the Eternal
The Holy Spirit is the most hidden and least understood Person of the Trinity-yet nothing in the Christian life exists without Him. From the breath that moved over the waters of creation to the fire that descended at Pentecost, Scripture reveals the Spirit as the One who gives life, sanctifies the Church, and draws humanity into communion with God.Breath of the Eternal is a comprehensive theological exploration of the Holy Spirit's work across the whole of salvation history. Moving from Genesis to the prophets, from the Incarnation to the Cross, from Pentecost to the interior life of the believer, Matthew Sardon presents the Spirit not as an abstract force, but as the living presence of God at work in creation, redemption, and sanctification.Drawing deeply from Scripture, the Church Fathers, and both Eastern and Western Christian tradition, this book shows how the Spirit purifies the heart, illumines the mind, strengthens virtue, and forms Christ within the soul. The same Spirit who hovered over the waters at the dawn of creation continues His work in the Church through the sacraments, prayer, suffering, mission, and hope of glory.Structured around four theological movements-Creation, Anointing, Indwelling, and Glory-Breath of the Eternal offers a unified vision of Christian life as participation in divine life, rather than mere moral effort. It invites readers to rediscover Christianity as a Spirit-filled journey of transformation, healing, and communion.Written for seekers, students, clergy, and all who desire a deeper understanding of the Holy Spirit, this book calls the reader to encounter the Spirit who creates, anoints, dwells within, and brings all things to their fulfillment-so that the human person may become, by grace, fully alive.

This Changes Nothing
When life throws us its worst, what we believe about God comes to the forefront. But what happens when the person we prayed for dies? The miracle doesn't come? The breakthrough arrives too late? When Jessica's son was diagnosed with leukemia, her faith didn't waver. In her mind, death was not an option. When the unthinkable happened, Jessica faced a new challenge: how to make sense of the grief when it seemed like God hadn't kept His end of the bargain. In this honest and gutsy book, Jessica Long wrestles with the issues of pain, suffering and disappointment, bringing a fresh biblical lens to some of life's most difficult questions: If God is all-powerful, why doesn't He fix the world? What difference does prayer really make? How do we keep going when fear has taken hold? Can our faith ultimately fail? With grace and honesty, Jessica invites us to rethink how we see God when life doesn't turn out as we hoped, and to discover a way of believing that allows us to get back up and run again.
You Are Not Alone
When cancer enters a life, it does not arrive quietly. Time fractures into scans and treatments, hope wrestles with fear, and questions surface that no easy faith can answer. In the long hours of waiting and the silent nights of pain, many find themselves asking not why this is happening, but where God has gone. This book was written for that place. You Are Not Alone leads the reader to encounter Christ not as a distant comforter, but as the God who draws nearer in suffering. The Christ who weeps at the tomb of Lazarus. The Christ who trembles in Gethsemane. The Christ who knows the weight of fear, the ache of the body, and the loneliness of unanswered prayer. This is a book for those whose faith feels fragile, whose strength is exhausted, and whose hearts need more than reassurance - they need presence.Rooted in Scripture, prayer, and the lived experience of illness, these pages offer gentle guidance for walking with God through cancer. They speak to the realities no one prepares you for: how to pray when words fail, how to endure the night without despair, how to listen for God in silence, how to carry suffering without being crushed by it. The book does not promise easy healing or tidy resolutions. Instead, it reveals a deeper truth: no tear is unseen, no prayer is wasted, and no suffering endured with Christ is ever empty.Written originally for the author's aunt during her battle with cancer, this book is now offered to every patient, caregiver, and loved one standing in the same valley. It is meant to be read slowly - beside hospital beds, in waiting rooms, in quiet moments when courage runs thin.Cancer may change everything, but it does not place you beyond God's reach. In every room where fear lingers, in every breath taken with effort, Christ is closer than you imagine. His wounds touch your wounds. His presence remains. His love does not withdraw. You do not walk this path alone.

The following have been selected out of a large number delivered by Chrysostom on the festivals of saints and martyrs, not only because they are good samples of his discourses on such occasions, but also on account of the celebrity of the two saints in whose honor they were spoken. There is really very little known about Ignatius beyond the fact that he was Bishop of Antioch, and suffered martyrdom at Rome in the reign of Trajan about the year 110 a.d.: being torn to death by wild beasts in the colossal amphitheater erected for the display of such inhuman sports by the emperors of the Flavian dynasty. The tradition that he was a disciple of St. John does not rest on any trustworthy evidence, but on the other hand there is nothing inherently impossible or even improbable in the supposition.

The First Apology of Justin Martyr
[a.d. 110-165.] Justin was a Gentile, but born in Samaria, near Jacob's well. He must have been well educated: he had travelled extensively, and he seems to have been a person enjoying at least a competence. After trying all other systems, his elevated tastes and refined perceptions made him a disciple of Socrates and Plato. So he climbed towards Christ. As he himself narrates the story of his conversion, it need not be anticipated here. What Plato was feeling after, he found in Jesus of Nazareth. The conversion of such a man marks a new era in the gospel history. The sub-apostolic age begins with the first Christian author, -the founder of theological literature. It introduced to mankind, as the mother of true philosophy, the despised teaching of those Galileans to whom their Master had said, "Ye are the light of the world."

A321 Disciple Training
As a body of believers, we have overcomplicated what it means to love God and love others while also failing to acknowledge, understand, explain, and participate in the full commission of Jesus Christ. Overall, the church has preached the Gospel, but has failed to teach the whole counsel of God by not instructing people how to walk in complete freedom while they help restore others into right relationship with Jesus. This book will show you how to walk in your complete identity as a Christian while wreaking havoc on the kingdom of darkness by preaching the Gospel, healing the sick, and delivering those held captive by the enemy. You will learn what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ who walks in the salvation, authority, and power he died to give us.
Against Heresies
This history introduces us to the Church in her Western outposts. We reach the banks of the Rhone, where for nearly a century Christian missions have flourished. Between Marseilles and Smyrna there seems to have been a brisk trade, and Polycarp had sent Pothinus into Celtic Gaul at an early date as its evangelist. He had fixed his see at Lyons, when Iren疆us joined him as a presbyter, having been his fellow-pupil under Polycarp. There, under the "good Aurelius," as he is miscalled (a.d.177), arose the terrible persecution which made "the martyrs of Lyons and Vienne" so memorable. It was during this persecution that Iren疆us was sent to Rome with letters of remonstrance against the rising pestilence of heresy; and he was probably the author of the account of the sufferings of the martyrs which is appended to their testimony. But he had the mortification of finding the Montanist heresy patronized by Eleutherus the Bishop of Rome; and there he met an old friend from the school of Polycarp, who had embraced the Valentinian heresy. We cannot doubt that to this visit we owe the lifelong struggle of Iren疆us against the heresies that now came in, like locusts, to devour the harvests of the Gospel.
The Power and Authority of a Believer
The Mandate of Dominion - From Subduing to ReigningThe divine narrative of humanity began with a profound and authoritative mandate, ringing with the very essence of purpose and partnership: "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth" (Genesis 1:28). This was no mere suggestion, no casual invitation to exist; it was the original blueprint for human existence, a comprehensive call to partner with the Creator in establishing order, beauty, and righteous stewardship over all of creation. God, in His infinite wisdom and boundless generosity, entrusted humanity with a kingly authority, a shared reign over the pristine world He had just fashioned. This was our initial inheritance, a life of absolute dominion where the spiritual and natural worlds operated in seamless harmony, thriving under our loving and righteous administration. But this perfect order, this idyllic picture of co-regency, was tragically shattered by the fall of Adam. The dominion was not merely challenged; it was lost, not just in its practical exercise, but in its very essence. The scepter of authority was usurped by an insidious enemy, a "strongman" who came with a singular, destructive agenda: to steal, kill, and destroy. Humanity was plunged from a state of reigning into a new reality-one of subjugation, fear, struggle, and often, utter helplessness in the face of chaos and spiritual opposition. The very earth groaned under the curse, reflecting the dominion that had slipped from humanity's grasp.Yet, our story, woven by the masterful hand of a redeeming God, does not end in despair. In the fullness of time, precisely at the kairos moment appointed by the Father, a better, unique, and incomparably more powerful mandate was instituted through the precious blood of Jesus Christ. This new mandate did not simply restore what was lost; it transcended it. Jesus, the last Adam, the Victorious King, and the ultimate Lord of all, systematically reclaimed all authority in heaven and on earth. He triumphed over every principality and power, disarming them and making a public spectacle of them on the Cross (Colossians 2:15). He recovered the lost title deed of creation and purchased back humanity's rightful place of dominion. However, Jesus, in His strategic wisdom, knew that this reclaimed dominion would not be fully manifested on earth without a divine plan that involved His redeemed people. The enemy, Satan, the number one adversary and a relentless accuser of the brethren, had been cast down to the earth with great wrath, knowing his time was short (Revelation 12:12). His presence meant continued resistance, contention, and the need for active engagement. Jesus understood that true dominion, tangible rulership on earth, is utterly impossible without first subduing the strongman and dismantling his works. That was precisely the reason He deliberately and powerfully bestowed His authority upon us, His Church. Only then, having equipped His disciples with this indispensable power, did He ascend to be at the Right Hand of the Father. We, His followers, are now His empowered agents, His delegated authorities, His co-laborers, entrusted with a master key to unlock and enforce His dominion on earth.
Prayer Covenant
Prayer is one of the most talked-about aspects of faith-and one of the least understood. In Prayer Covenant, author Othella Hill-Jordan invites readers into a deeper, more authentic relationship with God through a clear, Scripture-based exploration of prayer as both a spiritual discipline and a divine connection.Written for believers at every stage of faith, Prayer Covenant speaks directly to those who pray yet wonder if their prayers are being heard, those unsure of what to pray for, and those struggling with the waiting that follows heartfelt petitions. Through biblical teaching and spiritual insight, the book reveals what prayer truly looks like, how it works, and why persistence matters. Readers will learn how to pray with intention, humility, and faith-following the example of Jesus Himself. This book moves beyond surface-level encouragement to explore the conditions of effective prayer, the role of the Holy Spirit, and the spiritual alignment required for prayers to be answered according to God's will. Topics include praying in the Spirit, intercessory prayer, spiritual warfare, fasting, repentance, and understanding the Kingdom of God. Throughout, the author emphasizes that prayer is not performance or ritual, but an act of worship and trust-one that places God at the center of every circumstance.Prayer Covenant offers reassurance to doubters and strength to seasoned believers, reminding readers that God hears every prayer and works in perfect timing. With clarity, conviction, and biblical grounding, this book calls readers to remain steadfast, faithful, and confident in the unlimited possibilities of prayer.
Epistle to Gregory and Origen's Commentary on the Gospel of John
At Alexandria his expositions took place in the school, but at C疆sarea they formed part of the church services, so that the reports of those belonging to the C疆sarean period provide us with the earliest examples we possess of the discourse at Christian meetings. In an activity which he practiced so much Origen acquired extraordinary skill and facility, and gained the highest reputation, even beyond the limits of the Church. It is no wonder, therefore, if he succeeded in treating nearly the whole Bible in this way, a thing which might no doubt be said of many a Christian teacher since his day; for he was not one who was apt to repeat himself, but was constantly pressing on to break new ground.

Theosis
Theosis: Becoming What You Were Made For Reclaiming the Christian vocation that the modern world has forgotten.Humanity was not created for mere survival, moral improvement, or even heavenly consolation. Humanity was created for God. In this sweeping yet accessible work, Eastern Catholic theologian Matthew Sardon unveils the heart of the Christian mystery: theosis-the astonishing promise that men and women are called to share in the very life of the Holy Trinity.Drawing deeply from Scripture, the Fathers, and the liturgical inheritance of both East and West, Sardon unfolds a unified vision of salvation in which grace does more than pardon. Grace re-creates. The image of God becomes a living summons rather than a poetic metaphor; prayer becomes participation in divine light; the sacraments reveal themselves as the places where human nature is healed, elevated, and made capable of glory. From Eden's lost likeness to the burning bush, from the Incarnation to Pentecost, the path of deification emerges with clarity: humanity is meant to become what it beholds.Guided by Athanasius, Augustine, Maximus the Confessor, Gregory Palamas, and the great witnesses of the Christian East, this book offers both a theological foundation and a concrete spiritual roadmap. Ascetic practice, liturgical worship, and the crucible of suffering are shown not as burdens, but as the divine pedagogy that shapes the soul into a "living icon"-a human life that shines with the fire of the Kingdom.Written with scholarly depth and pastoral warmth, Theosis: Becoming What You Were Made For invites seekers, students, clergy, and everyday believers to rediscover the central truth of the Christian Gospel: salvation is not escape, but transfiguration.Daily life becomes the arena of communion.Holiness becomes possible. The glory of God becomes the destiny of the human person.
The Eternal Kingdom
The set to which this volume belongs is informally entitled "The Eternal Series," because each volume of the set unfolds an aspect of the reality of God's relationship with humanity that reaches from eternity past to eternity future. The formal title of the series is "An Evangelical Introduction to Reformational Theology." Here are the volume titles: Part I: Scripture: The Revealed Source For TheologyI/1 The Eternal Word: God Speaking To UsI/2 The Eternal Torah: Living Under GodPart II: God: The Personal Source Behind TheologyII/1 The Eternal God: God Revealing Himself To UsII/2 The Eternal Christ: God With UsII/3 The Eternal Spirit: God Living In UsPart III: Redemption: The Christ-Centered Heart of TheologyIII/1 The Eternal Purpose: Living In ChristIII/2 Eternal Righteousness: Living Before GodIII/3 Eternal Salvation: Christ Dying For UsIII/4 Eternal Life: Christ Living In UsPart IV: Consummation: The Lived Shape of TheologyIV/1 The Eternal People: God in Relation To IsraelIV/2 The Eternal Covenant: Living With GodIV/3 The Eternal Kingdom: Living Under ChristPart V: Method: The Comprehensive Foundation of TheologyV/1 Eternal Truth: The Prolegomena of TheologyThese volumes have been written for the informed Christian who is somewhat familiar with both the Bible and Christian theology. As you will learn in these volumes, that order-first Bible and then theology-is crucially important. So too is the distinction (but not the separation!) between these two: the Bible is not theology, and theology is not the Bible. Both following that order and honoring that distinction are prerequisites for healthy, charitable, and enduring Christianity.Dr. Willem J. Ouweneel is a Dutch author whose three doctorates-one each in biology, philosophy, and theology-rank him among the premier Bible scholars of this generation, and equip him with breadth of vision and depth of insight. When these volumes are read alongside an open Bible, the patient reader will acknowledge the authority of the claims being defended. The reader's certitude will ultimately come to rest, not in any particular theological system or model, but in the inspired, infallible Word of God, and more importantly, in the God of that Word. As such, this entire series and these volumes are fresh and faithful reformulations of the essence of biblical faith and life as that was transmitted throughout the centuries, was rediscovered in the Reformation, and has come to be known as Reformational theology: sola Scriptura, sola gratia, sola fide, solus Christus, soli Deo gloria.
Brief Apologia for the Church of the Ages
This book is a work of prophecy. Like Jeremiah or Ezekiel under the Old Law, Roger-Thomas Calmel spoke and wrote as a priest who suffered to see God dishonoured and His people led astray. Those ancient prophets were charged by God to speak against false doctrine; to warn the people of God and their leaders to return to the fear of the Lord, in their worship and in their daily lives; and thus to prevent Israel from being dissolved into the nations round about. Father Calmel, simple priest of the New Law, likewise spoke out against what his sometime mentor, Jacques Maritain, had called 'immanent apostasy': the widespread dissolution, within the visible Church, of dogma, and the replacement of supernatural faith, hope, and charity by merely human simulacra.Father Calmel's soul remains with us. It is present in his writings, standing on tiptoes, full of the Church's common doctrine and common prayer, stretching upward to grow in God's love. For him theology, liturgy, and the Dominican constitutions were not guides or regulations, but a source of inner nourishment. In our midst he fulfilled his task as a friar preacher, son of Saint Dominic, disciple of Saint Thomas, priest of Jesus Christ, and apostle of the Rosary. He endures.
