Explorations in the Anthropology of Religion
This Festschrift is dedicated to Prof. Dr. J. van Baal on the occasion of his retirement from the chair of cultural anthropology at the University of Utrecht. The essays presented here are written by fellow scholars in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of anthropology. In order to arrange the papers araund a theme that has never ceased to fascinate van Baal, we have asked the contributors to concentrate on a rel- igious subject. Within this broad area no specific topics have been solicit- ed, and the authors-- mainly fellow anthropologists and students of relig- ion-- have been able to pursue their own personal interests in the articles. Nevertheless, when the papers were collected, we found it possible to group them under three headings, each of which represents a facet of -1an Baal's enduring interests. Of course, some overlap is inevitable, as it is in any categorisation of heterogeneaus items. The topics of the three sections by no means represent an exhaustive inventory of all fields van Baal has successfully explored. The focus on religion necessarily leaves out many problems van Baal has actively occ- ied hirnself with during his many-sided career. Thus the academic stance of the Festschrift in no way pays tribute to his prolonged concern with admi.

Willowend
Life in the small town of Willowend has not returned to what it once was. Neither has the church. In the months following a season of quiet renewal, Pastor Caleb and the Willowend Baptist congregation are learning how to live with change that cannot be controlled or neatly explained. As faith deepens and new gifts begin to emerge, the church grows not only in number but also maturity - bringing with it caution, many questions, and the challenge of learning how to remain faithful without rushing ahead. As ordinary people learn how to pray honestly, listen carefully, and remain open to one another, Willowend slowly discovers that renewal is sustained not by excitement, but by endurance.Willowend: The Journey Continues is a gentle, honest, and deeply pastoral story of faith that learns to stay, courage that grows quietly, and the steady work of God in places the world often overlooks.
Perception and Processing of Address Terms
In many languages, speakers have a choice between a formal and an informal form when addressing others. The choice between these forms depends on several factors such as age, gender, education level, religion, social distance, individual preferences, etc. To date, little research has been conducted into how the use of a formal or informal form is processed by those to whom it is addressed. It is generally believed that people who are addressed with a pronoun they perceive as inappropriate in a given context may feel uncomfortable or even offended. Notoriously, informal pronouns prevail on social media, both for individuals and companies, but whether a formal or informal form of address is perceived as positive or negative may depend on the context of use. For example, in personal communication between companies and customers, some customers may prefer to be addressed with their formal rather than their informal pronoun, while at the same time, consumers may value the informal pronoun more than the formal pronoun in product advertisements. This Reprint provides new insights on how the use of a formal or informal form of address may affect the addressee.
Religion and Planetary Climate Crisis
No religious production has ever happened on a planet with 425+ ppm CO2 such that rapid climate change is the evolutionary and biogeochemical carrier within which all future religious production will by definition occur. This Reprint investigates how various theological positions may be responding to imminent climate regime shifts and how the sociology of religion may inform readers on how human groups are (or are not) using religion to organize around climate change. It explores how some religious actors are influencing cultural and social discourses around rapid climate change and dwelling practices within shifting bioecologies of place, including at the interfaces of technology and religion and of sustainability and religion, and how scholars should even conceive of the category of "religion" and how to teach to this category. Concepts of religious health within religious communities who may (or may not) be responding to the negative health impacts of runaway climate change and how religious ethics may (or may not) be changing to address the normative elements of runaway climate chaos are also investigated. Such scholarship occurs within the larger theme of the Reprint of Religion and Planetary Climate Crisis, where this crisis is understood to be biogeochemical, especially in geological time frames, but also political, economic, technological, ethical, and, therefore, biocultural. This opens up the need for humanities scholars to rapidly address rapid global heating in their research and teaching, and, thus, the requirement for the field of religious studies/theology to rapidly do the same.
Principle of Believing in One God
"Do you believe in one God? This is good; however, does this mean that you believe in the God of Moses? The God of Moses defines Himself and says, 'I am Who I am.' Let us find out together if you accept the God of Moses, who spoke to Moses face to face and mouth to mouth, even plainly."
I Am
Bread, light, a gate, a vine, and the way are fairly unconventional ways to describe yourself and yet they are some of the most profound and accurate descriptors the Lord Jesus uses to describe Himself. This book explores the seven 'I am' statements found in the Gospel of John, plus another nine occasions where the words 'I am' are spoken. We examine why these declarations are a lifeline for those who believe in Christ, giving some fresh insight into what Jesus meant when He said: 'I AM.'
Constructing the 'European Muslim Crisis'
This Reprint interrogates the dominant narratives constructing a supposed 'European Muslim crisis'. The collection originates from a Special Issue of the journal Religions and provides a critical, multidisciplinary examination of the discourses, policies, and everyday realities shaping contemporary Muslim life in Europe. The contributing authors systematically contest the dominant depiction of Muslim communities as perpetually in crisis. Instead, the volume explores the active and innovative methods through which Muslims address and counteract oversimplified, generalised representations of their identities and religious practices. The research investigates how individuals and communities navigate their religious affiliations within varied national frameworks of secularism, church-state relations, and multiculturalism. This collection advances beyond singular interpretations of Islam or Muslims; it studies the specific, lived experiences of diverse populations, such as Hazara migrants in Scotland and third-generation Turkish women in The Netherlands, highlighting processes of adaptation, agency, and individualisation. Key themes addressed include the persistent securitisation of Muslim populations, the mechanisms of institutionalised Islamophobia, the dynamics of identity construction amid policies such as the British Values agenda, and the recent political mobilisation of European Muslims in response to geopolitical events. This Reprint provides essential and timely analysis for scholars and policymakers involved in sociology, security studies, criminology, public policy, and Islamic studies.
Ten Days with Yehushueh
Ten Days with Yehushueh is a relevant history of religions from the time of Ahdahm to our time.Yehushueh's ministry of 3 years and 5 months that was His earthly work to redeem fallen mankind by His life without sin. The Ten Days that are central to this book was His decision, on the Friday before the Passover week, was followed by His Triumphal Entry on Shabbat. The Christian Tradition is that He celebrated in the Upper Room on Thursday Evening, was arrested and tried and convicted Friday Morning, crucified at nine am, died at 9 pm, into the tomb before sunset Shabbat, and was raised just at dawn Sunday. The Passover week was four days, not the traditional three days. The Jewish tradition was the first of the four days, Tuesday that year, was "The Feast of the First Born," a meal of leavened bread to celebrate they would be covered by the Passover meal the next evening. Yehushueh is the only Son of Yehuah, "a First Born." He ate of the leavened bread, the meal of a sinner. He was arrested, tried, and convicted by early morning Wednesday, executed at nine am, died at 3pm, and was in the tomb while late Wednesday morning before sunset. That Thursday was a "high-day" Shabbat, the Passover evening. Yehushueh was already in the Tomb, so did not partake of the Passover meal of unleavened bread: He died as a sinner because (A) His last meal was of leavened bread, and (B) He was not covered by the Passover meal of unleavened bread. Yehushueh was in the tomb late Wednesday morning, Thursday night and Morning, Friday night and morning, and Shabbat night morning. He was raised just when Shabbat dusk entered the evening of Sunday. In total, three nights and three mornings, three days like Jonah in the belly of the whale.Yehushueh accepted the death of a sinner, yet without sin.Anyone who, by faith, believes in Yehushueh's Finished Work will have eternal life.
Unrivaled in Bridging Divisions
The purpose of this book is to reveal why humanity - despite its moral ideals, spiritual traditions, and political promises - remains fractured at its core. Why do systems that claim to establish justice, unity, liberation, or compassion so often result in fear, coercion, uncertainty, and division? And why, across cultures and throughout history, does the human heart continue to long for truth, goodness, compassion, peace, and harmony - realities it cannot generate on its own? Why Jesus is the only one to bridge division.

Rethinking God's Will
Many Christians live with a quiet anxiety about God's will. They want to honour Him, yet fear making the wrong choice, missing His plan, or stepping outside His purposes. Instead of confidence, the search for God's will often produces uncertainty and pressure. This insightful book invites readers to rediscover a clearer, more biblical way forward. Drawing deeply from the Bible, Robert Griffith challenges the idea that God's will is a hidden blueprint which is waiting to be uncovered. He demonstrates instead that God's will is centred on Christ, rooted in relationship, and lived out through faithfulness rather than fear. With pastoral wisdom and a theological clarity, this book offers freedom from anxious discernment and invites believers to rest in God's faithful work. God's will is not something we must chase or decode. It is the gracious reality in which believers already live, as they grow in Christ and walk confidently with Him.
Esoteric Development
This edition brings together an ordered sequence of statements by Steiner on the development of higher, suprasensory knowing -- imagination, inspiration, and intuition. Ten chapters take the reader from the idea of inner development, through the cultural and evolutioary need for higher knowing, to examples of the practices and inner gestures this work requires. Steiner unfolds the necessary steps and stages, always insisting on the free, individual, and cognitive character of anthroposophic spiritual research.

Faith in the Desert
Faith in the Desert offers a powerful testimony of unshakeable faith forged in the fire of life's most daunting moments.Through poignant storytelling that brings readers from childhood to the present, this book takes readers on an intimate journey through the wilderness seasons that test, refine, and strengthen our relationship with God. From miraculous healings and angel visitations to financial troubles and family dysfunction, every chapter reveals how God shows Himself faithful when, from a human perspective, there is no reason to do so. The book shares the childlike faith of a little girl who desperately prayed for her dying mother, then watched God send an angel with a key. It uncovers the relentless prayers of an eleven-year-old girl who boldly interceded for her best friend's life. It uncovers the raw reality of parental divorce while learning to find identity in God rather than in family structure. This is more than a set of survival stories; it's a handbook of practical, biblical advice for life in the desert seasons. It's about real-life dilemmas: How can you learn to trust God for provision when the bills are due and the account is empty? How can you keep the faith when your prayers seem togo unanswered year after year? How can you guard your heart from bitterness when relationships break? How can you learn to hear God's voice through dreams, circumstances, and His Word The book is enriched with scriptural foundations, prayer prompts, and a 30-day faith-building guide. It stands as both testimony and manual for whoever walks through the wilderness. It reminds us that desert seasons are not destinations but training groundsplaces where ordinary faith becomes an extraordinary trust. This is more than a book; it is an invitation to discover that God specializes in bringing streams to dry ground.

From Shadows to Light Reclaiming True Joy and Purpose in Your Walk with God
In today's world, faith can easily lose its focus. Many believers find themselves caught in the shadows of spiritual performance - chasing platforms, followers, and recognition - while the heart of true devotion quietly fades. The hunger for God's Word grows weaker, and the trembling awe once felt at the feet of Jesus Christ begins to fade. What remains is often a faith that appears strong on the outside yet feels empty and restless within. From Shadows to Light addresses this spiritual drift with honesty and grace. It shines a light on how modern Christianity can become more about appearance than relationship, more about knowing about God than truly knowing God. Through gentle but powerful reflection, the book calls readers to step away from performance-driven faith and rediscover the simplicity and depth of walking with God.Written with the warmth and love of a pastor's heart, From Shadows to Light is a gentle guide for those who love God yet sense something missing deep within. It invites you back to the quiet place of daily intimacy with Jesus - where truth replaces pretense, peace quiets the noise of striving, joy is stronger than worry, and the presence of God fills and restores the soul.

God's Existence
This book is a journey through the timeless human pursuit of understanding our origins, our beliefs, our universe, and the possibility of a higher power. Across centuries, cultures, and civilizations, the same questions have echoed repeatedly. Who am I? How was this world created? What is the nature of faith? And if God exists, what form might such an entity take?Structured into six detailed sections, the book blends anthropology, theology, physics, cosmology, and philosophical inquiry with a balanced academic tone. The first section traces the evolution of Homo sapiens, including the discovery of fire, tools, language, community, and the social systems that shaped civilizations. The second section examines the emergence of religions, the diversity of belief systems, and the cultural, historical, and psychological forces that shaped them. The third section critically, but respectfully, evaluates irrational beliefs, myths, and superstitions that persist across societies. It does not attack religion. Rather, it encourages reflection based on evidence and logic. The fourth section explores the concept of a Programmed Universe, including its structure, its possibilities, the multiverse, cosmic engineering, and the laws that govern everything we observe. The fifth section asks what God might look like from a scientific standpoint if such a being exists. It explores energy, dimensions, causality, and the limits of human perception. The final section, titled Principles of Creation, explains the Earth, the solar system, galaxies, cosmic events, and the scientific foundations of life. This book does not dictate conclusions. It provides the intellectual tools to form your own.

Commandments of Men
For decades, many church teachings have been accepted as biblical truth - but are they really? Are tithing and first-fruit offerings for new covenant believers? Are Seed-faith Doctrine, the Prosperity Gospel, and the 'little 'g' God' doctrine truly rooted in Scripture? Commandments of Men challenges these five widely taught doctrines, examining the Scriptures often used to justify them. Through rigorous analysis of biblical texts, historical context, and the teachings of Jesus and the apostles, this book exposes the extra-biblical nature of these doctrines and calls for a return to the simplicity of the Gospel and faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
Abchurch Imperial
The story is set in a church in the City of London during the period 1900-1940. The background of the novel is witness to the international height of British imperial power - albeit an imperial power which was waning. The Church of England, trying to cling to an imperial past which reinforced its own authority, has almost lost sight of its ecclesiastical purpose to promote Christian values to parishioners at a local church level. Thomas, a young vicar, patiently and almost alone looks after the interests of his communicants and by so doing appears out of tune with the age. He is overlooked for promotion and often ignored by his fellow clerics. Eventually, however, his honesty, hard work and Christian good intentions make a clear statement to local residents, who in return regularly flock to his church services and social events. If the Church of England is indeed to survive in a post-imperial age, perhaps it will have to rethink its Christian mission and its values.
Why the Value of the East Should Matter to the West
Why The Value Of The East Should Matter To The West by Majid Salim is a lively and thoughtful book. It's an exploration of many ideas from Eastern philosophy and religion, with an emphasis on their applicability to secular management economics in the West. It's designed for thinkers- people switched on to the fact that there is more to life than materialism and nihilism. In the West, there is little religion, as Christianity has declined. But what if people still need solutions to problems affecting their souls? This book attempts to provide these potential solutions. Perhaps for the first time, the very best management theories in Hinduism and Buddhism are described in this book in a way that will light a touchpaper in the minds of cognoscenti everywhere.
God's Grace Manifested
In this 90-day devotional, Christine Fisher shares the many ways God's grace has been revealed in her ordinary life through nature, relationships, and unexpected encounters. She pulls the reader in by sharing personal stories, scriptural reflections and encouragement, with the hope to inspire others to look for God's grace in their own lives. Each devotion connects biblical truths to daily experiences, emphasizing themes such as gratitude, unconditional love, forgiveness, resilience through trials, and the importance of community. Her stories highlight the value of small acts of kindness, the power of prayer, and the transformative impact of God's love in both triumphs and challenges. Reflection questions are provided at the end of each reading for personal application and prayer to help others deepen their awareness of God's ongoing work.
Rules for Freedom of Faith
This book offers a structured philosophical analysis of freedom of faith in contemporary society. It proposes clear principles to distinguish normal religious belief from forced religious practice, emphasizing that genuine religious freedom includes the right to believe or not believe, to express praise or criticism, and to withdraw from or change one's faith freely.Through systematic reasoning and case-based discussion, the author examines freedom of religious expression, the relationship between religion and law, the separation of religion from politics and nationality, and the social consequences of compulsory belief systems. The book also explores how misunderstandings about religious freedom can lead to social conflict, and how rule-based frameworks can promote peaceful coexistence among people of different beliefs.Rather than defending or opposing any specific religion, this work focuses on universal principles of individual liberty, equality before the law, and mutual respect. It is intended as a contribution to discussions on religious studies, political philosophy, human rights, and multicultural societies, offering readers a rational framework for understanding freedom of faith in a pluralistic world.
Messengers Among Us
Messengers Among Us: The Many Voices of GodNot every message from heaven comes with thunder. Sometimes, it arrives as intuition, a stranger's kindness, or a silent knowing that changes how we view the world. Every person can receive guidance not through hierarchy, but through openness. Messengers Among Us explores how the divine speaks through human life itself through art, through compassion, and through moments that transcend logic yet feel undeniably true. Across faiths and philosophies, the message remains the same: the voice of God has never stopped speaking, and it speaks through more than words. This book invites readers to listen differently by recognizing truth disguised as coincidence, feeling guidance in timing, and remembering that heaven's messengers are not always winged or distant. Sometimes, they look a lot like us.
Revenge Is for God
One bad day led to the true story of a man who cheated death to avenge his honor against an infamous gang leader of Edmonton, AlbertaThis book is the true story of a high-profile case of Leslie Raymond, who was your ordinary kid growing up in the neighborhood of Edmonton, Alberta, when he was shot repeatedly at a mall's parking lot for pissing off an infamous gangster. An infamous shooting that took Canada by storm, a boy who was shot in a friendly neighborhood yet somehow beat the odds by making it alive with the intent to avenge his honor against those who had wronged him. A story of a good man turned bad, a tale of blood and tears. A tail of injustice and justice. A story where the protagonist and the antagonist kept on one-upping each other till justice was served, but that was not without years of pain, regret and anger. This remarkable story will often seem like fiction because of the amazing experiences of the author. A book that will literally shake you to your core. This is a story of everything, a story that is bound to leave its mark on you for a lifetime.
The Teachings of Jesus Unplugged
Release the Spiritual Teachings about Love and Non-violence of Jesus from the grip of the Old Testament and drink the New Wine untainted by the Old Wine. The Spiritual Teachings that Jesus gave of the Universal Way of Love and Non-violence have been heavily influenced and distorted over the years by the influence and God of the Old Testament. The Teachings of Jesus Unplugged is my dedicated work to assist followers of Jesus to untangle themselves from the confusing, conflicting accounts that they often receive from Judeo/Christian churches about Him and the source of Perfect Love that He was at one with. Old Testament Jewish overlays and redundant terminology have been removed to clarify and reveal His main Spiritual Teachings and Way of Love. Poor translations of the Gospels have been sharpened and cleansed of any misleading inflections. His Way of becoming a Spiritual child on Earth is really very simple but complexities and misleading understandings are still being taught and placed over them and many have left the Judeo/Christian churches because on this poor representation of who He really was, who the source of His inspiration really was and what He was really Teaching. This book presents Jesus and His correct Teachings in a clearer more truthful and direct way bringing to life His main important Spiritual instructions with no ambiguity. This is just about the New Wine understanding of our Spiritual Life on Earth that He taught. He said, "Never mix this New Wine understanding of Spirituality with the Old Wine understanding or it will be tainted and you will lose the correct understanding of what I am Teaching." I have brought the New Wine out of the Old Wine and I hope it assists followers of Jesus and His Way of Love and Non-violence to be more empowered to live a Spiritual Life on Earth.

The Corpus Hermeticum
Before "The Kybalion" and the Renaissance alchemists, there was The Corpus Hermeticum-a collection of revelatory dialogues ascribed to Hermes Trismegistus. For nearly two thousand years these luminous teachings on divinity, cosmology, and the powers of the human soul have shaped Western thought. This edition presents the classic English rendering of noted scholar G.R.S. Mead, whose clear, faithful prose has guided generations of seekers.
Two Thousand Years is Long Enough to Wait
A non-religious approach to the historical figure of Jesus the Christ; is indebted to the researches of Rudolf Steiner; influenced by the recently-discovered Gospel of Judas; inspired by the ancient figure of Mani; haunted by the Shroud of Turin and is anti - Saint Augustine. I use the British astronomer Colin Humphrey's insights over dating of the Last Supper and the eclipse at the Crucifixion. I portray the Christ as a solar being. This is a very personal Odyssey. I reject the idea of Him being jewish: He was born in Galilee not Judea..I take what you might call a Gnostic approach.
Wisdom of the WORD
When I began this writing, it was the Solemnity of the Birth of St. John the Baptist, and in the Office of Readings St. Augustine concluded his sermon: "John was a voice that lasted only for a time; Christ, the Word in the beginning, is eternal." Jesus is the Word of words, the Word that speaks beyond all words, the Word that is one with the Father, whose NAME (YHWH) is Silence itself, a Silence that speaks in all words through the power of the Spirit. He is the WORD made flesh and dwells among us, speaking as only He can, with a Wisdom only He owns. And so His words and, indeed, all of Scripture is pregnant with meaning, meaning that goes far beyond the surface. As the Saints have told us, Scripture is an undrainable ocean and a mine wherein infinite treasures may be discovered, if one seeks them with a mind open to the Wisdom of God, the Wisdom of the WORD. In this work I pray to have been blessed to communicate some of that holy Wisdom known only in the Spirit of God, to unearth some of the treasure the LORD offers forth in His Word.
