2025/07/30 出版

In "The 14th Day of the First Month," Bill Hagedorn delves into the profound and often debated topic of the date of Jesus' crucifixion. This exploration is crafted exclusively from biblical texts, offering readers a unique opportunity to engage with the material in an accessible way, free from complex theological language. The book is thoughtfully organized to guide readers through the historical context and scriptural interpretations that surround the final days of Jesus. Hagedorn begins by laying a solid foundation, discussing the significance of the Hebrew Bible and clarifying the multiple meanings associated with the term "Passover."In the first section, readers will gain insight into the biblical calendar, which is essential for understanding the events leading up to the crucifixion. Hagedorn introduces the type/antitype concept, a key interpretative tool for exploring God's appointed times and their relevance to the life and mission of Jesus. As the journey continues, the author meticulously examines pivotal events such as the Lamb Selection Day and the Passover, illuminating their typical and antitypical significance. Readers will discover how the Feast of Unleavened Bread and the event of Firstfruits connect to the overarching narrative of redemption woven throughout Scripture.Hagedorn does not shy away from addressing critical issues present in the Gospel narratives. He invites readers to consider the intentions of the religious leaders and the cultural implications surrounding the Last Supper. By scrutinizing key time markers in the accounts of Jesus' death, he provides clarity to the complex timeline, enhancing the reader's understanding of the events. In the concluding sections, Hagedorn weaves together the findings and arguments presented throughout the book, emphasizing the necessity of resolving the debate surrounding the date of Jesus' death. This resolution is framed not only as an academic pursuit but also as an opportunity for deepening one's faith and understanding of the Christian experience.Included is a comprehensive study guide designed for both individual readers and group discussions, enriching the reader's experience and encouraging reflection. "The 14th Day of the First Month" offers a fresh perspective on this critical biblical event, inviting readers-whether seasoned theologians or curious newcomers-to journey deeper into the Scriptures. Jesus and Other Sons of God

2025/07/30 出版

In a world full of demigods, heroes, daimones, and Olympians, how did early Christians conceptualize Jesus's divinity? What symbols, images, and literary motifs were available to them as elements of an emerging belief in Christ as divine? Scholars have focused upon the origins of "high Christology" for decades. Only recently have we begun to address how early Christians inscribed and communicated that belief to others in the ancient Mediterranean. In Jesus and Other Sons of God, Daniel B. Glover takes up these important, interlacing questions of formative Christian belief. Glover focuses this study upon the author of Luke and Acts, situating him firmly within his historical, social, and literary contexts. Against those who have asserted that early Christian literature was written exclusively or primarily for Christians, Glover argues that Luke wrote for an audience of well-educated, literate peers--a cadre of elite cultural producers who were interested in new religious movements. With this reimagined readership in mind, Glover demonstrates that Luke not only wrote among and for the literary elite but also as and like one of them. In retrieving the presentation of Jesus's deity in Luke/Acts, Glover elucidates how Luke adopted and to some extent adapted both the rhetorical-literary practices and mytho-theological convictions of his milieu to give expression to the way he understood Jesus. This important study offers at once a more precise picture of Luke's social location, religious engagement, and literary procedure as well as a thorough and historically coherent reading of Luke's Christology in its ancient Mediterranean setting. Scholars and students of New Testament, early Christianity, and religion in antiquity will benefit from the incisive insights yielded by Glover's groundbreaking book.

'The Spirit of the Lord Came Upon Me'

T&T Clark 出版
2025/07/30 出版

Lester Grabbe here distills his wide body of work on the subject of prophecy. The volume considers prophecy in different cultural contexts across ancient Israel and surrounding areas. Beginning with a consideration of prophecy in the Hebrew Bible, Grabbe then looks at it as phenomenon in the ancient near east, including Mesopotamia, Egypt and the Levant. From this background in the immediate context of ancient Israel, Grabbe then widens the cultural lens to consider prophecy in more global environments, including Africa and the Americas, and recent examples of pseudo-biblical prophets such as Joseph Smith. In the final part of the book Grabbe then analyses these different prophetic types and forms, looking at the continuing traditions of prophecy alongside their ancient roots.

Unraveling the Family History of Jesus

Bookside Press 出版
2025/07/29 出版

Unraveling the Family History of Jesus is a scholarly attempt to identify all of the personsrelated to Jesus from 100 BC to 100 AD.Almost all of the significant persons mentioned in the New Testament were in fact related to Jesus in one way or another. Staring with the earliest Kings of Judea from 100 BC Mr. Norris shows which Kings were the great grandparents of Jesus. In making this discovery he puts "flesh and blood" on the names mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus found in the Gospel of Luke. For instance, the great grandfather of Jesus who is named Matthat in the gospel was in fact Antigonus Mattathias II, the last King of Judea of the Davidic line, executed in 39 BC by Herod the Great. His name has been "hidden" in history due to the fact that he was known by his Greek name, Antigonus, rather than his Jewish name, Mattathias. The famous historian Flavius Josephus only called him by his full name of Antigonus Mattathias II one time, after which he was only known as Antigonus. Thus it was unknown, until now, that the last Davidic King of Judea was in fact the great grandfather of Jesus.By learning about the larger family of Mattathias we also learn about Jesus' great aunts and uncles and find that they were deeply involved in the events that led to the rise of Jesus, His death and resurrection, and the eventual destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Similar revelations are presented on the other side of Jesus' family, the extended family of His supposed father Joseph of Nazareth. Mr. Norris shows that Joseph was not a "poor carpenter" but was rather a rabbi and a scholar who was quite wealthy. When this is all presented it shows a much clearer picture of the surroundings in which Jesus taught and deepens our knowledge of His ministry and teaching methodology.

The Gospel of John is one of the significant writings that appeals to Asian spirituality and ideals in a variety of ways. John's unique features as a literary masterpiece encompass the feelings and aspirations of the Asian consciousness. The Gospel's genre dynamism, features of setting, ideological constructs, character traits, plot structure, and point of view reflect and reveal its assimilative power to resonate with the situational aspectsof Asian communities. In this commentary, Dr. Johnson Thomaskutty explores the possibilities of a pastoral and contextual reading of the Gospel of John. The Asia Bible Commentary Series empowers Christian believers in Asia to read the Bible from within their respective contexts. Holistic in its approach to the text, each exposition of the biblical books combines exegesis and application. The ultimate goal is to strengthen the body of Christ in Asia by providing a pastoral and contextual exposition of every book of the Bible.
