Emerging Seventh Party System
The two-party system is based on laws, party rules, and customs. Several other parties also operate in the U.S. and occasionally have a member elected to local office. The need to win popular support in a republic led to the American invention of voter-based political parties in the 1790s. Americans were especially innovative in devising new campaign techniques that linked public opinion with public policy through the party. Political scientists and historians divided the development of America's two-party system into six or so eras or "party systems starting with the Federalist Party, which supported the ratification of the Constitution, and the Anti-Administration party (Anti-Federalists), which opposed a powerful central government and later became the Democratic-Republican Party. (First Party System: 1792-1824; Second Party System: 1828-1854; Third-Party System: 1854-1890s; Fourth Party System: 1896-1932; Fifth Party System: 1932-1976; Sixth Party System: 1980s-2016; Emerging Seventh-Party System - Trumpism.

Canadian Jews numbered 240,000 in the 2001 census. In 2011, the Greater Toronto Area is home to 188,710 Jews. Montreal and Toronto are home to 80-85-% of Canadian Jews. The first Jews immigrated to Canada in the 1750s. They, too, had to compromise their Jewish identity to gain entrance into the Americas. Canada was under the rule of the French colonizers. The Colonizers banned Jews and all non-Catholics from settling. Some Jews side-stepped these restrictions by converting to Catholicism. The first significant wave of Jewish immigrants immigrated to Canada, arriving with General Jeffery Amherst in 1760. Most Jewish settlers emigrated from the United States and settled in urban centers, the majority in Montreal. The 1831 census recorded 197 Jewish residents in Upper and Lower Canada. By 1851, the number had increased in trade and contributed to the country's economic growth. Jewish immigration to Canada peaked between 1900 and 1914, when almost 100,000 entered the country.
The Disappearance of the Universe
Obtaining freedom from the never-ending cycle of karma and transmigration is the ultimate objective of the practice of self-inquiry. To remove the layers of illusion that distort our view of the world, we can exclude the possibility of coarse items being candidates for ultimate reality and instead consider subtle objects to be candidates. Because of this process, we can look past the obstacles that lead us to feel fear and want. This process eliminates the sense of isolation that we have between ourselves and the world. The practice of Jnana Yoga, also known as the path of knowledge, offers a structure for introspection that is founded on the concept of non-duality. It inspires us to examine both the nature of our own existence and the assumptions and ideas that we have, and it motivates us to question those things. By participating in this sort of questioning, we may start to unravel the complex web of suffering that has trapped us for such a significant amount of time.

"SEVEN years have passed since this essay was written, and the MSS. pages have been lent to many friends and students of mystic lore and occult meanings. It is only at the earnest request of these kindly critics that I have consented to publish this volume. The contents are necessarily of a fragmentary character, and have been collected from an immense number of sources; the original matter has been intentionally reduced to the least possible quantity, so as to obtain space for the inclusion of the utmost amount of ancient, quaint and occult learning. It is impossible to give even an approximate list of works which have been consulted; direct quotations have been acknowledged in numerous instances, and (perhaps naturally) many a statement might have been equally well quoted from the book of a contemporary author, a medi疆val monk, a Roman historian, a Greek poet, or a Hindoo Adept: to give the credit to the modern author would not be fair to the ancient sage, to refer the reader to a Sanskrit tome would be in most cases only loss of time and waste of paper. My great difficulty has been to supply information mystic enough to match the ideal of the work, and yet not so esoteric as to convey truths which Adepts have still concealed. William Wynn Westcott"

ACT Alliance and the Refugee Crisis
The thesis attends to ecclesial matters of aid by analysing the ecclesiological problem of identity and meaning of ACT Alliance. African churches are participating in aid, and Ethiopia is a good case with its intensity of church-based aid work. ACT Alliance was an ecumenical initiative to act in solidarity with people in need through coordination and collaboration. ACT, i.e. Action by Churches Together, expresses the churches growing together in koinonia. In theory, this ecclesiologically informed idea was conceptualised as ecumenical diakonia. Christian aid agencies may suffer a mission drift and loss of identity causing inner secularisation in the churches thus endangering Christian commitment to the poor. Tensions in the study signify an ambiguity that this thesis investigates through the case of the ETH141 ACT Appeal to support South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia in 2014 with two churches in Ethiopia shedding light on the issue. The ACT forum failed to attract church funding and mobilised state funding by a consortium with a principled humanitarian approach appropriate for refugee assistance. The Maedot of 1983 from the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church and the ECMY letter of 1972 from the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus supported integral human development while criticising a donor-based approach, based on a sense of Ethiopian ownership, Christian anthropology, and the gospel. The ETH141 resembles an international crisis model, i.e. relief assistance by ecumenical specialised agencies coordinating with other stakeholders without being: integrated with the churches, intended as intra-church aid, or set up for Christian mission. Tensions indicate superficial conflict but deep concord between aid and church, and deep conflict between exclusive humanism and the churches' mission to reach every person with the gospel and life of the church.
Second Century Believers
A great many youth who did not grow up in Bah獺'穩 families entered the Bah獺'穩 Faith between 1964 and 1973. Although there were those who withdrew from membership or stayed out of touch, a strong cohort of others are still actively engaged in Bah獺'穩 communities; I count myself among them. This book presents voices of US Americans who were in their teens or early twenties when they became Bah獺'穩s and have been active believers for the past half century or so. I wanted to explore how the social environment during that eventful decade had influenced this generation's thought processes while seeking and accepting the Bah獺'穩 Faith, and what has enabled them to remain actively engaged in it even a half century later, at the time of writing.
Grieving Pregnancy
In Grieving Pregnancy: Memorializing Loss in Japanese Buddhism and American Catholicism, Maureen L. Walsh compares how the two religious traditions respond ritually and discursively to miscarriage, stillbirth, and abortion experiences marked by grief for the women involved. The experience of pregnancy loss has always been a part of women's lives, yet only recently has it garnered attention from religious leaders and scholars commensurate with its prevalence. This book examines pregnancy loss as a theological problem for both Buddhism and Catholicism and analyzes the rites and memorials that have developed to address it, such as Japanese Buddhist mizuko kuyō (water children rites) and emergent American Catholic memorial practices focused on pregnancy loss. These parallel practices have emerged within distinct religious landscapes--a fact reflected in their forms and purposes--and when considered together, they raise questions of keen interest to theological and religious studies about the goals of religious practice and the imagination of human life at its earliest stages.
Fundamental Principles of Tasawwuf
The science of Tasawwuf, often misunderstood and misrepresented, is the cornerstone of spirituality that guides the seeker toward sincerity, self-purification, and closeness to Allah. In this abridgment of The Principles of Tasawwuf (Qawa'id al-Tasawwuf), lessons from the illustrious Sheikh Ahmad Zarruq (d. 899 AH) presents a timeless masterpiece, systematizing the core principles of the spiritual path with unparalleled clarity. This concise yet profound work delineates 40 essential principles, or qawa'id, from his larger work, that navigate the trader through the intricate interplay of iman, practice ('amal), and self-awareness. Sheikh Ahmad Zarruq explores the essence of Tasawwuf by bridging it seamlessly with lslamic jurisprudence and theology. The text emphasizes that true spirituality is unattainable without sound understanding of the Shari'ah and vice versa, reminding us of the holistic unity between outward adherence and inward sincerity. SOME OF THE KEY THEMES EXPLORED INCLUDE: The relationship between faith, jurisprudence, and spirituality, captured in the maxim, "No Tasawwuf without Fiqh, and no Fiqh without Tasawwuf."The perils of extremism in worship and the necessity of balance in religious practice. The conditions for sincerity in remembrance (dhikr) and the transformative power of seeking Allah through it.The rule of mentorship and the necessity of a guide for traversing the spiritual path. The centrality of humility, ethical conduct, and adherence to the prophetic way in dealing with oneself and others. In an era of spiritual confusion and material distraction, the Sheikh's work offers an antidote - a roadmap that is as relevant today as it was centuries ago. His principles reflect the delicate balance required to maintain sincerity in faith while engaging the practical realities of life.Accompanied by insightful commentary based on his writings, this new bilingual abridgement renders his wisdom accessible to a modern audience, preserving the elegance of his thought while clarifying the nuances for contemporary readers.
Called to Freedom
Christians in the modern West hear a lot about--and talk a lot about--"freedom." The word has taken on so many meanings that Christians often fail to realize how much our contemporary ideals of freedom stray from what freedom has meant in Scripture and the Christian tradition. Called to Freedom: Retrieving Christian Liberty in an Age of License by Bradford Littlejohn seeks to define and disentangle theological, moral, and political concepts of freedom and provide a deeper understanding of what true Christian freedom is--liberation from the bondage of fear and sin. Littlejohn builds his argument from the Protestant doctrine of Christian liberty anchored in Martin Luther's Reformation classic The Freedom of a Christian. He then looks at conflicts over technology, the market, and religious liberty as case studies of how a full-orbed Christian idea of freedom helps us respond faithfully to these challenges in our spiritual lives, our churches, and our civic engagement. Littlejohn argues that a great source on contemporary social problems and trends towards illiberalism derive from a faulty understanding of human freedom which places individuality and authenticity as the highest good for society. Littlejohn argues that the Christian tradition presents a much more compelling vision, namely that freedom cannot lead to flourishing for everyone unless it is rightly ordered to God's moral commands and divinely ordained sources of authority in our lives. As such, he presents a case against modern secularism and charts a vision for what Christian faith actually has to say to our political and social lives.

Witnessing God
This book is a comparative theological investigation into the following question: how does one theologically understand the sincere-truth-seeking religious other who rejects one's truth claims not out of animosity or ignorance, but rather from a desire to worship God in spirit and in truth? Specifically, this book investigates the extent to which soteriologically exclusivist Muslims and Christians maintain their respective truth claims while maintaining a posture of vulnerability to the revisionary power of the religious other's claims. To answer these questions, this book examines comparative theology's missiological foundation through a dialogical study of neo-Calvinist and Reformist Sunni understandings of the epistemic status of the religious other. This book is a practice in comparative theology with the goal of rethinking neo-Calvinist theology of religions through Islamic thought to present a missiological comparative theology amenable to exclusivist theological positions within Christianity and Islam.
Still Time to Care
Charting the path forward for our churches and ministries in providing care--not a cure--for our non-straight sisters and brothers who are living lives of costly obedience to Jesus. At the start of the gay rights movement in 1969, evangelicalism's leading voices cast a vision for gay people who turn to Jesus. It was C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, Francis Schaeffer and John Stott who were among the most respected leaders within theologically orthodox Protestantism. We see with them a positive pastoral approach toward gay people, an approach that viewed homosexuality as a fallen condition experienced by some Christians who needed care more than cure. With the birth and rise of the ex-gay movement, the focus shifted from care to cure. As a result, there are an estimated 700,000 people alive today who underwent conversion therapy in the United States alone. Many of these patients were treated by faith-based, testimony-driven parachurch ministries centered on the ex-gay script. Despite the best of intentions, the movement ended with very troubling results. Yet the ex-gay movement died not because it had the wrong sex ethic. It died because it was founded on a practice that diminished the beauty of the gospel.Yet even after the closure of the ex-gay umbrella organization Exodus International in 2013, the ex-gay script continues to walk about as the undead among us, pressuring people like me to say, "I used to be gay, but I'm not gay anymore. Now I'm just same-sex attracted."For orthodox Christians, the way forward is to take a close look at our history. It is time again to focus with our Neo-Evangelical fathers on caring over attempting to cure. With warmth and humor, as well as original research, Still Time to Care provides: Guidance for the gay person who hears the gospel and finds themselves smitten by the life-giving call of Jesus.Guidance for the church to repent of its homophobia and instead offer gospel-motivated love and compassion.
The Life of Our Sacred Father, Hypatius of the Rufinianae
The life of Hypatius offers a precious witness to the timeless perspectives, values, and virtues of the former fifth-century abbot and saint. Better known by its short title, the Life of Hypatius was written in the mid-fifth century by Callinicus, the second abbot of the monastery that Hypatius (ca. 366-446) founded across the Bosporus Strait from Constantinople. Saint Hypatius was known for his ascetic regimen, unflagging rigor, and spiritual wisdom, and he challenged his disciples to resist careless Christianity and eliminate the influence of paganism. In this monastic hagiography, readers encounter a stark vision where monks are spiritual enforcers working with zeal and vigilance to promote Christian orthodoxy, worship, and moral conduct. The Life of Our Sacred Father, Hypatius of the Rufinianae offers: a precious witness to the perspectives, values, and attitudes of the early generation of monks in and around Constantinople. enthusiasm for imperial Christianity juxtaposed with a distrust for the worldliness of clergy members and an aggravated hostility toward traditional, local, and non-Christian worship practices. a look at Hypatius's long paraenetic discourse that focuses on the timeless and indisputable virtues that monks strove to cultivate, including: humility, possessionlessness, care for the poor, self-control, and zealous commitment.

Kojiki: Fully Revised Edition
The classic story of Japan's origins--now in a fully revised and reader-friendly edition. The Kojiki is Japan's oldest surviving text, chronicling the mythical creation of the Japanese islands, the origins of the imperial family, and the early development of Shinto, Japan's indigenous religion. A cornerstone of Japanese identity and culture, it has profoundly influenced the nation's literature, spirituality, and political thought for over a thousand years. Told in a vibrant, poetic style, the Kojiki brings to life the primordial deities Izanagi and Izanami, their divine children, and the unfolding of the Japanese cosmos. The result is a more accessible and complete reading experience, ideal for both first-time readers and longtime students of Japanese culture. With a new foreword by Kojiki scholar Matthieu Felt, this edition highlights why the Kojiki remains essential reading for anyone interested in Japanese mythology, literature, history, or religion.

Faith, Nationalism, and the Future of Liberal Democracy
Faith, Nationalism, and the Future of Liberal Democracy highlights the use of religious identity to fuel the rise of illiberal, nationalist, and populist democracy. In Faith, Nationalism, and the Future of Liberal Democracy, David Elcott, C. Colt Anderson, Tobias Cremer, and Volker Haarmann present a pragmatic and modernist exploration of how religion engages in the public square. Elcott and his co-authors are concerned about the ways religious identity is being used to foster the exclusion of individuals and communities from citizenship, political representation, and a role in determining public policy. They examine the ways religious identity is weaponized to fuel populist revolts against a political, social, and economic order that values democracy in a global and strikingly diverse world. Included is a history and political analysis of religion, politics, and policies in Europe and the United States that foster this illiberal rebellion. The authors explore what constitutes a constructive religious voice in the political arena, even in nurturing patriotism and democracy, and what undermines and threatens liberal democracies. To lay the groundwork for a religious response, the book offers chapters showing how Catholicism, Protestantism, and Judaism can nourish liberal democracy. The authors encourage people of faith to promote foundational support for the institutions and values of the democratic enterprise from within their own religious traditions and to stand against the hostility and cruelty that historically have resulted when religious zealotry and state power combine.Faith, Nationalism, and the Future of Liberal Democracy is intended for readers who value democracy and are concerned about growing threats to it, and especially for people of faith and religious leaders, as well as for scholars of political science, religion, and democracy.
You Are My Slaves
Some of the slavery parables in the New Testament have been called "texts of terror," as the slaves who are portrayed in them are beaten or even cut in two. Despite - or because - their violence, slavery parables are often used in early Christian and early rabbinic literature to illustrate the unique relationship between God and his people. This study investigates the reasons for and meaning of using the master-slave metaphor in the parables: what does it tell us about early Christian and early rabbinic theology, including possibilities for critique and resistance vis-?-vis the divine, and what does it say about slavery in the ancient world?
Sufism and Zen in the West
Historically and culturally, Sufism and Zen may not seem to have anything in common. However, in the West, their spiritual messages are often perceived as strikingly similar. In this book, scholars analyse the ways in which Sufism and Zen were introduced to and developed in the West. The collection shows that the popularity of these religions arose not because of the substantive shared elements within the two traditions, but because their promoters in the West employed similar strategies to respond to the interests of a modern, Western audience. The first book to make a close comparison of Sufism and Zen, this study is an important contribution to understanding Western religious life and processes of 'easternisation'. It sheds new light on how Sufism and Zen came to represent a spirituality that is both countercultural and in touch with modern sensitivities.
Collecting Practices and Opisthographic Collections in Qumran and Herculaneum
In Collecting Practices and Opisthographic Collections in Qumran and Herculaneum, Ayhan Aksu offers a new perspective on practices of collection in both the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Herculaneum papyri. This study focuses on the intriguing question how ancient scribes and scholars used manuscripts to bring different texts in conversation with each other. Central to Aksu's approach are opisthographic manuscripts - scrolls that contain text on both the front and back side. Comparative research of the rich papyrus collection from Herculaneum reveals that scribes across various regions of the Mediterranean developed dynamic approaches to engage with their texts.
The Foundations of Sufism
Ahmad Zarruq, a 15th-century North African Sufi, turned his considerable intellect towards integrating theology, Islamic law and the spiritual path. His model of a jurisprudentially-grounded Sufism is as relevant today as when he presented it to a mediaeval audience, using an aphoristic style tailored to his educated readership. The current growth of puritanical movements in the Islamic world makes Zarruq's The Foundations of Sufism a must-read for scholars, educators and those seeking to reconcile various interpretations of the faith. The author of this fresh translation, an Arabic and Classical Sufism scholar, consulted newly-discovered manuscripts in preparing his critical edition of this seminal work.
Nostalgia, Religion and Popular Culture
Drawing on the event of Queen Elizabeth II's death in 2022 as a central case study, this book explores the way we navigate the relationship between nostalgia and religion. Focusing on the lived experiences of 'ordinary people' and in tandem with the 'turn to the self' discourse, Deacy suggests that our relationship with nostalgia illustrates the shift from objective and transcendent value-systems towards the domain of everyday experience, love and loss. This book revisits the way we understand religion and the secular, using the medium of popular culture, such as radio, film, TV and music to interrogate the 'nostalgia-as-religion' narrative. The interpersonal and social elements of nostalgia are explored, such as through the way radio fostered virtual communities and played a key role regarding national, religious and cultural memory during the mourning of the Queen. Attention is given to how nostalgia has evolved over time, and how it can be understood as a religious process which transforms our lives at a time of loss and contributes to an eschatological future.

Ethiopian Diaspora Churches on Mission
Diaspora churches are positioned to have a tremendous capacity for missions as they practice their faith in the Western world, yet why do they fail to develop effective strategies to break out of their inwardly locked ministries?Addressing this question, Dr. Mehari Tedla Korcho offers a thorough examination of Ethiopian diaspora churches in the United States, encompassing their historical, sociological, and missiological aspects. Drawing attention to the relatively overlooked nature of the 1.5 diaspora generation, those who came to the United States as children, he explores the missional potential of mobilizing the intergenerational context of Ethiopian diaspora church communities. Outlining a familiar narrative found in many diaspora churches, Dr. Korcho provides comprehensive, strategic recommendations for helping the first, second, and 1.5 generations of these communities engage in missions together. This work offers a fresh perspective to the field of diaspora mission studies through expounding the prospective impact of mission by the diaspora and the challenges faced in establishing missional partnerships.

It offers liturgy both classical and contemporary for different stages along the mourner's path, from prayers for healing (even when "cure" may be out of reach) and prayers to recite before dying, to prayers for every stage of mourning: from aninut (the time between death and burial), to shiva(the first week of mourning), to shloshim (the first month), the culmination of the first year, yahrzeit (death-anniversary) and yizkor (times of remembrance). This volume features traditional words alongside renewed and renewing interpretations and variations. It contains complete liturgies for shiva accompanied by resonant new translations, evocative readings, and complete transliteration. It also contains prayers for a variety of spiritually difficult circumstances (miscarriage, stillbirth, suicide, when there is no grave to visit, mourning an abusive relationship, and more). In the trans-denominational spirit of Jewish renewal, Beside Still Waters is for individuals and communities across the Jewish spiritual spectrum.
Bhiksha
About the Book: What is significance of Bhiksha? Why did Sai Baba request Bhiksha? Even when it was considered a dishonour to ask for Bhiksha, why did Baba continue to seek alms? He would perform miracles in front of people of Shirdi & yet still would go out to seek alms. The idea was instilled in HIM by Venkusha, who explained, "a Saint asking for Bhiksha takes away the negativity of the house he goes to, asking for Bhiksha". The house that gives alms is blessed. Baba shared food with hungry from little food he gathered & kept only a tiny portion for himself. This book is for all those who await to realise purpose of their life. Humans look at every action to get a favourable outcome in materialistic terms; which may or may not come into reality. The Qur'an in Islam
`Allamah Sayyid M. H. Tabataba`i shows in this gem how the Qur'an contains the fundamental roots of Islam and the proof of prophethood as the Word of God. Copious quotations from the Qur'an are given to illustrate its teachings, its exoteric and esoteric dimensions and the meaning of exegesis. From a general discussion of the Holy Qur'an essential relevance to humanity, stressing God's guidance of all His creatures toward happiness and well-being, the author proceeds to show how the Qur'an contains the fundamental roots of Islam and the proof of prophethood as the Word of God. Copious quotations from the Qur'an are given to illustrate its teachings, its exoteric and esoteric dimensions and the meaning of exegesis. The eternal validity of Qur'anic revelation is examined in depth, together with the attitudes of both Muslim and non-Muslim writers to the questions of Revelation and Prophethood. The relationship of the Qur'an to the sciences shows to what extent it encourages us to study all manner of natural and physical sciences, as well as philosophy, literature and every available branch of knowledge. The book closes with a brief description of how the Qur'an has come down to us. "The Qur'an in Islam"should be read now more than ever before because the current aberrations propagated in the name of Islam in general and Shi`ism in particular necessitate the uncompromising and clear statement of the traditional Islamic perspective as expounded by such masters as `Allamah Tabataba`i. Moreover, the present book marks an important addition to the literature in English on the central theophany of Islam, the Noble Qur'an."

On to the Sanum獺s
On to the Sanumas is a firsthand account of Don and Barb Borgman's forty-year effort and achievement to place the word of God into the hands of the Sanumas, a tribe of the Yanomami people of Brazil. The edited compilation of personal letters, journal entries, and newsletters is a detailed record of their many years with the tribe and the friendships they established among them. It is a story filled with toil, adversity, trials, and even tragedy, yet also one of joy and evidence of God's faithfulness and love. The book provides great insight into the Sanuma people and their way of life as many experienced change from animism and shamanism to faith in Jesus Christ. It is also a historical record of the first contact expeditions to the Yanomami people by missionaries of Unevangelized Fields Mission in the late 1950s and early 1960s. These are all recorded by Borgman.
