Finding Gideon
A horse, a dog, and a long-time dream coming together-what more could a girl want? Since the day I read my first Thoroughbred series book in fifth grade, I imagined crouching over the withers of a racehorse, feeling its muscles bunch together and release with each stride. But I wanted more than an image in my mind-I wanted it in real life. It was my junior year of college when I left home to chase that dream, and for a minute I had it between my fingers. Gideon rode in the horse trailer and Sandi was curled into a ball in the backseat when I moved to Louisville. Within two weeks I was pounding down the track on young Thoroughbreds, impressing trainers with my bravery and skill. But soon, piece by piece, it began to crumble. Holding onto the dream, and my faith, was like grabbing water by the fistful and watching it slip between my fingers. How could I keep going in this land of strangers and broken dreams? How could I trust the God who gives when He's also the God who takes away? But how could I quit when the dream still stirred in my bones and Gideon was out there somewhere?

Love As God Intended It
In his latest book, " Love As God Intended It," author Mr. Derick Chibilu draws inspiration from 1 Corinthians 13 to explore the fundamental essence of love. As a born-again Christian for over thirty years, Mr. Chibilu has been passionate about promoting Christian family values, and this book is a testament to his deep conviction that God's desire is to see a world where love prevails. The book draws on the teachings of the apostle Paul, who wrote extensively about love in his letters to the early Christian communities. Paul saw love as the most important of all virtues and the ultimate expression of God's nature. He exhorted his readers to love one another deeply, just as Christ loved them and gave himself up for them. For Paul, love was not an abstract concept; it was a tangible reality that should be evident in the way believers treated each other. The book also highlights the example of Christ, who demonstrated the ultimate act of selflessness and love by sacrificing himself on the cross for the redemption of humanity. Christ's life and teachings provide a model for how we should love others, putting their needs above our own and seeking to serve rather than be served.Ultimately, the book's message is one of hope and encouragement. It reminds us that no matter how broken our relationships may be, there is always the potential for restoration and healing through the power of love. By embracing the teachings of Paul and following the example of Christ, we can build strong and healthy relationships that reflect God's love and bring joy and fulfillment to our lives.

What Will Outlast Me?
In her debut essay collection, Sarah K. Lenz explores the question: How do you live knowing you're going to die? Lenz touches on moments when death brushed near, including a house fire, a car accident, and a police shooting, but in each case, the violent and tragic are interwoven with curiosity and insight. With clarity and grace, Lenz takes on a wide-range of topics. From the discovery of a post-mortem photograph of her great-uncles who were killed by lightning to the quotidian pancake-making days with her preschooler son while the COVID-19 pandemic raged, Lenz confronts the complexities of being sandwiched between aging parents and a young child, while also navigating her own thyroid cancer diagnosis. In the midst of this, Lenz finds herself comforting her father, who's fixated with where to spread his ashes in "Driving the Section Line, " and imagining all the ways her baby can die when suffering postpartum depression in "So Many Ways." Though the subjects are serious, often life or death matters, Lenz tells these stories with warmth and wisdom. The narrative is buoyed by breathtaking honesty-and a bit of the grotesque-like a misguided attempt to cook a whole hog's head from her beloved, late grandmother's recipe. This book is a moving, heartfelt meditation on how to face mortality, how to grieve, but most importantly, how to awaken to the ephemeral beauty of the world. This book is a powerful reminder that what will outlast us is those we love.

Lovers, Dreamers, & Thieves
"With a novelist's eye for detail and a poet's gift for language, Cebulska has written a visceral knockout of a memoir packed with vibrant, unforgettable family members and unexpected happenings. Cebulska is a brilliant, big-hearted, and luminous storyteller who can capture a world in a short vignette. I was entirely captivated by these intimate and moving family portraits that have shaped the author's life and work." Harriet Lerner, author of The Dance of Anger and Why Won't You Apologize? "This memoir is at once funny and poignant, wide-ranging and laser-focused, personal and universal. Cebulska weaves memories, family stories, and local history with deftness and reverence, creating a memoir that is both fun to read and profound." Charles Anthony Silvestri, poet, lyricist, author of A Silver Thread "Marcia Cebulska's account of life in Chicago's Polish community is both moving and important. Polish Americans in Chicago are often referenced but have not often told their own story. Lovers, Dreamers, and Thieves captures both the joys and the sorrow of the immigrant/ethnic experience in the Windy City. It is a must read for anyone interested in Chicago and its diverse people." Dominic A. Pacyga, Author of American Warsaw: The Rise, Fall and Rebirth of Polish Chicago. "Marcia Cebulska, in Lovers, Dreamers, & Thieves, transforms the stories of her life into fabulous folk tales full of fantastic and fantastical lore focusing on everything from the holy (a youthful interest in becoming a nun), to the earthly and earthy (her great-grandmother was a blacksmith), to the wholly bizarre (her grandfather produced fake weddings) and shocking (her uncle's connection to the mob and father's arrest). This collection elevates the commonplace book far above and beyond the common, up past the luminiferous ether, settling in the realm of legends that couldn't possibly be true, right? Oh but they are. Now listen..." Andrew Farkas, Author of The Great Indoorsman: Essays, The Big Red Herring, and Sunsphere

Heritage
The issue of adoptees making contact with their birth parents is often a contentious one. The traditional practice of denying adoptees knowledge of their genetic parents creates a very different social reality for the adoptees; secrecy distinguishes them as a separate category of people with suspect family membership and questionable social identity. Karen March examines how some adoptees make contact with their birth mother to manage their ambiguous social status. In The Stranger Who Bore Me sixty adult adoptees discuss the difficulties they have encountered in a world where biological kinship governs. Each of their stories reveals the personal dilemma created by the societal demand for secrecy and the deep pain and intense joy associated with adoptees' making contact with their birth mother. Karen March has created a compelling and informative analysis of this need by some adoptees. Little research has been done on the actual outcome of adoptee-birthparent reunion and most arguments in this controversial area are based on personal anecdotal reports. This book offers the first scientific view of the consequences of reunion. As such it is an invaluable guide for any member of an adoptive triad as well as for professionals and government officials in the field of adoption.Any adoptee, adoptive parent, or birth parent may be faced with the reality of contact. The stories told in this book will help them cope with that event and provide others with the knowledge and insight needed to understand and support those who initiated it.
Social Parenthood in Comparative Perspective
Investigates social parents - people who function as parents but who may not be recognized as suchin the eyes of the law What makes a person a parent? Around the world, same-sex couples are raising children; parents are separating and re-partnering, creating blended families; and children are living with grandparents, family friends, and other caregivers. In these situations, there is often an adult who acts like a parent but who is unconnected to the child through biogenetics, marriage, or adoption--the common paths for establishing legal parenthood. In many countries, this person is called a "social parent." Psychologically, and especially from a child's point of view, a social parent is a parent. But the legal status of a social parent is hotly debated. Social Parenthood in Comparative Perspective considers how the law does--and how it should--recognize social parenthood. The book begins with a psychological account of social parenthood, establishing the importance of a relationship between a child and a social parent and the harms of not protecting this relationship. It then turns to social scientists to identify and explore some circumstances when a child may have a social parent. And to compare legal responses to social parenthood, the book draws on the expertise of legal scholars in nine countries in North America and Europe. The legal contributors describe the existing laws governing social parents, critique their efficacy, and offer new insights. Though almost all of the countries analyzed have adapted to the new reality of family life by recognizing social parents in some manner, the nature and extent of the recognition varies widely. The volume concludes by discussing some of the issues flowing from the decision to recognize social parents, including whether social parents should have the same legal rights and responsibilities as other legal parents, whether all social parents must be treated identically, whether the law should limit a child to two parents, and much more. Families are changing, and the law must adapt accordingly. Social Parenthood in Comparative Perspective charts a way forward by offering solutions to help policymakers consider options for addressing social parenthood.

Help! I'm a Foster Parent
Foster families are unsung heroes, willing to stand on the front lines for children who can't stand up for themselves. But fostering can also be a lonely journey as friends and family members pull away from the fear of the unknown. We all have a job to do, and it starts by stepping forward and wrapping around those who are sacrificing so much. In Help! I'm a Foster Parent: Experiences From Real People. Hope From a Real God., Nikki Hertzler has compiled the stories of foster families and others who are in the trenches-loving, advocating, and fighting for children who have found themselves displaced from their biological families. Their poignant, transparent stories will help you get a glimpse into the true realities of fostering, discuss ways to support these families, and encourage others on their own foster journey through a daily prayer, Scripture, and reflection. EndorsementsThese stories from foster and adoptive moms will be an encouragement to other foster and adoptive moms. This is hard, hard work. These stories remind us of our humanity, God's greatness, that we are not alone, and how desperately we all need Him. Trisha Porter Backyard Orphans Anyone who steps into the fostering system sooner or later realizes how broken and dark it is. For fostering families, the road is often frustrating and lonely. For the children in foster care, the emotions are so much more than that. That is why we need a book like this. Discouragement is always close by, and the emotions and feelings run deep. But families are not alone. We all need to be encouraged to persevere in the messiness, to love the children who didn't ask for this, to encourage biological parents about whom few care-to be a light in the darkness. Pastor Derek Parker, Lead Pastor Starkey Road Baptist Church, Seminole, Florida As someone who has never fostered, I found the stories in Help! I'm a Foster Parent powerful. The genuine emotion of each devotion is heartfelt. Honestly, the experiences provoked in me a deeper empathy and support for the brave parents who choose to open their homes. But the book provides so much more. It honestly relates to the foster parents' many challenges and offers understanding, camaraderie, encouragement, and hope. This book is a must-read for those desiring a deeper understanding of God's command to care for the needy and the orphans. Lauren CrewsAuthor of Strength of a Woman: Why You Are Proverbs 31
Emptying the Nest
2024 Independent Press Award Distinguished FavoriteEmptying the Nest: Getting Better at Goodbyes, is about change, identity, and mental health. When Morgan Baker's daughter, Maggie, left for college and Baker also parted with nine puppies from a litter the family raised, she collapsed into a deep depression. She eventually adjusted and, with a lot of help, did better when her younger daughter left for school. By the time Maggie graduated from college and moved to LA with her boyfriend, Baker was ready. She prepared by focusing on herself, and what she wanted. Her identity shifted. While Baker will always be a nurturer, she is more than a mother.

The Young Mother
There is a prejudice abroad, to some extent, against agitating the "What shall we eat? What shall we drink? and Wherewithal shall we be clothed" not so much because the Scriptures have charged us not to be over "anxious" on the subject, as because those who pay the least attention to what they eat and drink, are supposed to be, after all, the most healthy. It is not difficult to ascertain how this opinion originated. There are a few individuals who are perpetually thinking and talking on this subject, and who would fain comply with appropriate rules, if they knew what they were, and if a certain definite course, pursued a few days only, would change their whole condition, and completely restore a shattered or ruined constitution. But their ignorance of the laws which govern the human frame, both in sickness and in health, and their indisposition to pursue any proposed plan for their improvement long enough to receive much permanent benefit from it, keep them, notwithstanding all they say or do, always deteriorating.

A Parent's Guide to Gifted Children
A Parent's Guide to Gifted Children (2007), the quintessential compendium of raising gifted children, has been revised! In this new edition, coauthors Edward R. Amend Psy.D., Emily Kircher-Morris, LPC, and Janet Gore, M.Ed. reinforce the reliable approaches originally explored in the first edition, while drawing extensively on the wealth of research and information developed over the last 15 years in the areas of neuroscience, psychology, and education. Our children are navigating a world that in many crucial ways is quite different from the one that existed in 2007. The new Parent's Guide to Gifted Children includes issues of social media, screen time, LGBTQ, and bullying. For gifted children however, many of the needs remain the same- advocacy, educational planning, access to true peers, and more. Rich in information and strategies, this edition will be referred to time and time again whether you are entirely new to gifted, completing your "active" parenting days, or supporting a gifted grandchild, student, or client.
