Since around 2000, there has been a noticeable upsurge in critical work on the visual archive of Atlantic slavery, resulting in a host of important studies. While most of these contributions are weighted towards images created during the era of slavery itself, some critics have adopted a more historically far-reaching approach, exploring the ways in which such images live on beyond the original context of their production, circulation and consumption, returning imaginatively in different forms at different times and in different places. Festivals in Latin Literature explores the role of festivals in elegiac, lyric, and epic poetry, as well as historiography. In all of these, festivals play a more pervasive role than has so far been realised. Tibullus' elegiac oeuvre rests on an interplay between amatory and festive poetics that even has a political meaning to it, and Propertius uses festivals in his fourth book of elegies to question, from an amatory perspective, the memory typically associated with some key Roman festivals. In the poetry of Sulpicia and Ovid's Tristia, festivals allow voices that are otherwise marginalised to shape their own fame and commemoration. Horace's Odes and the Carmen saeculare rest on an intriguing interplay of festivity in the private sphere, which forms but a fleeting and precious moment, and the monumentality of public festivals, in which the poet styles himself as a master of Roman time. Post-Vergilian Latin epicists use festivals to explore the fragility of human identity in a world dominated by the gods, in Ovid's Metamorphoses, and to question further the commemoration connected with festive days. In particular, Statius in his Thebaid undermines the foundational importance of festivals in the Aeneid, vividly staging the problematic meaning of festivals that convey a premature commemoration of an epic conflict that is unspeakable (nefas). Finally, in Livy's ab urbe condita and Tacitus' Histories, festivals both provide structure and capture long-term developments in Roman history, including Rome's rise to power and the collapse of its morals, while situating both works in broader historiographical and intertextual dialogues. The book sheds new light on these authors and works, uncovering their unique 'festive poetics'. Imagining the American Death Penalty traces the US American cultural imaginary of capital punishment through popular visual representations from the 1890s to the twenty-first century. The book focuses on three generic and historical clusters of representations: early film from the 1890s through Intolerance (1916), crime film noir of the 1950s and1960s, and legal TV series from the 1990s through the early 2000s. The book makes two central arguments. First, it demonstrates that an increased concern with the death penalty in popular media does not mean that these texts promote an abolitionist agenda: their cultural work is ambiguous at best. This ambiguity is always contingent upon both the affordances of the particular genre and medium in question and on political-legal discursive context. The book explores both in detail. Early film is enchanted with its own representational possibilities due to the progress of technology and, in analogy, with the progress in execution technique, specifically the electric chair. In film noir, genre conventions and the legal back-and-forth before and after Furman predicate ambiguity. In legal TV series, the genre's ensemble casts and its focus on conversational exchange invite open debate. The second argument is that popular visual representations consistently whitewash the death penalty. The book demonstrates that this is the case because the most common narrative around executions in film and TV is to cast the condemned man as a hero who defies the violence of the state, gains dignity by accepting his fate and faults, and in some ways triumphs over death. The American imaginary, until very recently, did or could not imagine Black men to possess that measure of agency that it attributed to its white heroes.
