The Inner Life of Mrs. Dalloway

2025/07/17 出版

Mrs. Dalloway is a novel about almost everything. The story of a single day in London after the First World War, it travels backward and forward in time and consciousness, venturing beyond the ordinary world into epic, mythic, and mystical modes. The novel is a work of extraordinary richness, as much for its interwoven webs of meaning as for its moral and psychological vision. Edward Mendelson explores the novel's deepest questions, focusing on the core themes of medicine, empire, and love. He traces how Virginia Woolf thought and wrote, considering the complexities and resonances of her works. Mendelson casts Mrs. Dalloway as an extended protest against authorities that wield power over others and a defense of the equality of inner lives. He also examines the place of the book in literary history going back to Homer, Dante, and Shakespeare as well as its influence on later writers from Erich Auerbach through Zadie Smith. Both incisive and passionate, this book is at once a wide-ranging critical study of Virginia Woolf's writing and a love letter to a great novel.

Comics and Catharsis

University P 出版
2025/07/17 出版

Contributions by Kelly Baron, Angie Chau, Jennifer Nagtegaal, Lee Okan, Diana Pifano, Russell Samolsky, Kay Sohini, Jordan Tronsgard, Anastasia Ulanowicz, and Aanchal Vij Comics and Catharsis: Exploring Graphic Narratives of Trauma and Healing explores the idea that trauma and healing hold an imbalance in many forms of literature--especially in the world of comics. Whether it be war-based, national, physical, or sexual trauma, this volume looks at a wide variety of trauma and the psychological pain and devastation that arise during and--crucially for the question of trauma narratives--following the events as the psychological (and often physical) wounds are processed. Essayists in the collection engage with questions of how comics process trauma through depictions and receptions. Viewing trauma through the lens of comics such as Maus, Persepolis, and Fun Home, as well as works by comics writers who are little known or unknown outside their communities, contributors analyze how trauma is used in artistic style, writing, and overall storytelling. Together, the essays in Comics and Catharsis show how people who have suffered trauma often flock to these works to find a way to acknowledge and process their own suffering.

The Cambridge Introduction to Jacques Lacan

Todd,McGowan  著
2025/07/17 出版

The difficulty of Jacques Lacan's thought is notorious. The Cambridge Introduction to Jacques Lacan cuts through this difficulty to provide a clear, jargon-free approach to understanding it. The book describes Lacan's life, the context from which he emerged, and the reception of his theory. Readers will come away with an understanding of concepts such as jouissance, the objet a, and the big Other. The book frames Lacan's thought in the history of philosophy and explains it through jokes, films, and popular culture. In this light, Lacan becomes a thinker of philosophical importance in his own right, on a par with Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. Lacan's great contribution is the introduction of the unconscious into subjectivity, which results in a challenge to both the psychoanalytic establishment and to philosophers. The Cambridge Introduction to Jacques Lacan provides readers with a way of understanding the nature of Lacan's contribution.

Unfurl

Eli,Clare  著
2025/07/17 出版

A queer disabled love song to trees and beavers, tremors and dreams, Unfurl explores the pulsing core and porous edges of survival, sorrow, and dreaming. Blending poetry and creative nonfiction, emotion and activist thinking, Eli Clare invites us to unfurl ourselves into the lovely multitude of genders beyond the binary of woman and man, the fierceness of street protest, and the long slow time of granite. He sings to aquifers. Wrestles with the aftermath of child abuse and his family's legacy as white settlers occupying Dakota homelands. He leans into history. Calls the names of the living and the dead. Connects his own tremoring body to a world full of tremors-earthquakes, jackhammers, quaking aspens. Unfurl reveals deep queer kinships between human and more-than-human, sentient and nonsentient. At every juncture, these poems and essays embrace porousness and the power of dreaming. Ultimately, Unfurl is an invitation to rebellion and joy.

More Lovecraftian People and Places

Ken,Faig  著
2025/07/16 出版

This newest volume of Ken Faig's extraordinary researches into the personal interactions of H. P. Lovecraft exhibits all the qualities that Faig has displayed over a lifetime of scholarship: a thorough canvassing of documentary sources (including census records, city directories, and the like); a sensitivity to the nuances of Lovecraft's life and work; and an expansive understanding of the historical context in which Lovecraft lived and wrote. Here we find essays on Lovecraft's relatives (his uncle Franklin C. Clark; his second cousin, Ethel Phillips Morrish, who could remember Lovecraft when he was four years old); the principal of his elementary school, Abbie A. Hathaway, along with his private tutor, Arthur P. May; the Black servant, Delilah Townsend, who worked at 454 Angell Street and continued to run errands for Lovecraft and his aunt in later years; and Mariano de Magistris, the tenant who worked the quarry that Lovecraft's family owned.Other essays probe Lovecraft's relations with the Irish (including a trio of brothers, the Banigans, who were Lovecraft's neighbors when he was a boy); the first editor of Weird Tales, Edwin Baird; and the people who occupied the boarding houses at 169 Clinton Street in Brooklyn and 10 Barnes Street in Providence. Comprehensive essays on Lovecraft's travelogues of his ancestral region of Foster, R.I., and on his 1937 diary are among the insightful studies in this book.Ken Faig has been doing high-level scholarship on Lovecraft since 1970, and this volume is a testament to his lifelong research on every aspect of the life, work, and thought of the Dreamer from Providence.

Robert Browning

2025/07/15 出版

Robert Browning by G.K. Chesterton is a seminal biographical study that redefines the Victorian poet through a lens of paradox and intellectual vigor. Chesterton, renowned for his wit and theological insight, dismantles the myth of Browning as an obscure moralist, presenting him instead as a champion of spiritual optimism and psychological depth. The work dissects Brownings mastery of the dramatic monologue, his exploration of human motives, and his defiance of Victorian literary conventions. Chesterton traces Brownings evolution from early works like Pauline to mature triumphs such as The Ring and the Book, emphasizing the poets belief in the redemptive power of imperfection. The analysis highlights Brownings marriage to Elizabeth Barrett, framing it as a creative partnership that fueled his exploration of love and faith. Chestertons criticism transcends mere biography, offering readers a map to navigate Brownings dense symbolism and philosophical contradictions. This volume stands as a cornerstone for enthusiasts of Victorian poetry, literary criticism, and biographical studies, blending Chestertons signature rhetorical flair with rigorous scholarly analysis.

Loving Sylvia Plath

W. W. Norton 出版
2025/07/15 出版

Sylvia Plath is an object of enduring cultural fascination--the troubled patron saint of confessional poetry, a writer whose genius is buried under the weight of her status as the quintessential literary sad girl. Emily Van Duyne--a superfan and scholar--radically reimagines the last years of Plath's life, confronts her suicide and the construction of her legacy. Drawing from decades of study on Plath and her husband, Ted Hughes, the chief architect of Plath's mythology; the life and tragic suicide of Assia Wevill, Hughes's mistress; newly available archival materials; and a deep understanding of intimate partner violence, Van Duyne seeks to undo the silencing of Sylvia Plath and resuscitate her as the hardworking, brilliant writer she was.

Ethics for Apocalyptic Times

2025/07/15 出版

Ethics for Apocalyptic Times is about the role literature can play in helping readers cope with our present-day crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and the shift toward fascism in global politics. Using the lens of Mennonite literature and their own personal experience as a culturally Mennonite, queer, Latinx person, Daniel Shank Cruz investigates the age-old question of what literature's role in society should be, and argues that when we read literature theapoetically, we can glean a relational ethic that teaches us how to act in our difficult times. In this book, Cruz theorizes theapoetics-a feminist reading strategy that reveals the Divine via literature based on lived experiences-and extends the concept to show how it is queer, decolonial, and equally applicable to secular and religious discourse. Cruz's analysis focuses on Mennonite literature-including Sofia Samatar's short story collection Tender and Miriam Toews's novel Women Talking-but also examines a non-Mennonite text, Samuel R. Delany's novel The Mad Man, alongside practices of haiku and tarot, to show how reading theapoetically is transferable to other literary traditions.Weaving together close reading and personal narrative, this pathbreaking book makes a significant and original contribution to the field of Mennonite literary studies. Cruz's arguments will also be appreciated by literary scholars interested in queer theory and the role of literature in society.

The Body and the Senses in Greek Tragedy

2025/07/15 出版

The Body and the Senses in Greek Tragedy is the first book to approach the corporeality of Greek drama in terms of its capacity to involve audiences in the construction of meaning, not only on an affective but also on an intellectual level. Afroditi Angelopoulou argues that the inner workings of theatre, and the reasons behind its effectiveness, can be located in the lived, sentient body as the root of human thought, experience, and awareness. Drawing on theories of embodiment, theatre, and performance studies, this study shows that investigating the playwrights' sustained and varied use of elements of corporeality is essential for uncovering the meaning of tragic narratives, whether experienced in live performance or as a text. Through close readings of select plays, Angelopoulou explores the intricate connections between sensory experience, language, physical movement, and affect, focusing on the way inter-corporeal processes unfold on the stage and within the theatre space. She demonstrates how thinking with and through the body can ultimately encourage the spectator, as well as the reader, to participate in the act of sense-making. Each chapter traces distinct somatic themes, indicating how these contribute to a play's aesthetics, ethics, and narrative arc. By employing the human sensorium as a hermeneutic device, The Body and the Senses in Greek Tragedy offers a compelling methodology for studying language, subjective experience, and performance reception in Greek drama.

Egyptian Gothic

Jay,Sullivan  著
Palgrave M 出版
2025/07/15 出版

The Egyptian Gothic consists of novels and short stories about ancient Egyptian mummies returning to life to seek retribution or romance as well as cursed object tales. Now mostly forgotten, from the 1880s through to the 1920s it was more popular than the vampire genre. This book is the first to examine the genre by using the frequent sensory descriptions within these texts to interrogate attitudes towards Empire. Its aims are twofold. Firstly, it demonstrates that despite their status as disposable popular fiction these texts are rich in sensory discourses that have thus far been unexamined. Secondly, reading these discourses of touch, sight, smell, sound and taste reveals new and intriguing ways in which Egypt is allowed to strike back against the British Empire. The book argues that the Egyptian Gothic does not support the domination of Empire, but instead presents a power dynamic in flux with the mummy fighting back against Western occupation. Egypt and its artefacts evoke simultaneous feelings of fear and desire, where those who meddle by invading tombs or stealing mummies are destroyed by Egyptian revenants.

Motherhood

Anna,Brook  著
2025/07/14 出版

Anna Brook's Motherhood: A Ghost Story is an unguarded, lyrical excavation of the thresholds between presence and absence, memory and immediacy, selfhood and care. Rendered in the space between poetry and prose, Brook traces the spectral nature of early motherhood: how the body is unmade and remade, how time dissolves and reforms, and how past and present flicker in and out of alignment. Layered with literary echoes and visceral sensory detail, this work defies easy categorisation, existing in the liminal space between memoir, poetry, and philosophical meditation.

The Bloomsbury Handbook to Ageing in Contemporary Literature and Film

Sarah,Falcus  著
2025/07/14 出版

Across more than 30 chapters spanning migration, queerness, and climate change, this handbook captures how the interdisciplinary and intersectional endeavor of Age(ing) studies has shaped contemporary literary and film studies. In the early 21st century, the literary study of age and ageing in its cultural context has 'come of age': it has come to supplement and challenge a public discourse on ageing seen mainly as a political and demographic 'problem' in many countries of the world. Following a tripartite structure, it looks first at literary and film genres and how they have been shaped by knowledge about age and ageing, incorporating both narrative genres as well as poetry, drama and imagery. The second section includes chapters on key themes and concepts in Age(ing) Studies with examples from film and literature. The third section brings together case studies focussing on individual artists, national traditions and global ageing. Containing original contributions by pioneers in the field as well as new scholars from across the globe, it brings together current scholarship on ageing in literary and film studies, and offers new directions and perspectives.

The Political Uses of Literature

2025/07/14 出版

Drawing on a global history of politicized writing, this book explores literature's utility as a mode of activism and aesthetic engagement with the political challenges of the current moment. The question of literature's 'uses' has recently become a key topic of academic and public debate. Paradoxically, however, these conversations often tend to bypass the rich history of engagements with literature's distinctly political uses that form such a powerful current of 20th- and 21st-century artistic production and critical-theoretical reflection. The Political Uses of Literaturereopens discussion of literature's political and activist genealogies along several interrelated lines: As a foundational moment, it draws attention to the important body of interwar politicized literature and to debates about literature's ability to intervene in social reality. It then traces the mobilization of related conversations and artistic practices across several historical conjunctures, most notably the committed literature of the 1960s and our own present. In mapping out these geographically and artistically diverse traditions - including case studies from the Americas, Europe, Africa, India and Russia - contributors advance critical discussions in the field, making questions pertaining to politicized art newly compelling to a broader and more diverse readership. Most importantly, this volume insists on the need to think about literature's political uses today - at a time when it has become increasingly difficult to imagine any kind of political efficacy for art, even as the need to do so is growing more and more acute. Literature may not proffer easy answers to our political problems, but as this collection suggests, the writing of the 20th century holds out aesthetic resources for a renewed engagement with the dilemmas that face us now.
