Whether it be war-based, national, physical, or sexual trauma, this volume looks at a wide variety of trauma and the psychological pain and devastation that arise during and--crucially for the question of trauma narratives--following the events as the psychological (and often physical) wounds are processed. Essayists in the collection engage with questions of how comics process trauma through depictions and receptions. Viewing trauma through the lens of comics such as Maus, Persepolis, and Fun Home, as well as works by comics writers who are little known or unknown outside their communities, contributors analyze how trauma is used in artistic style, writing, and overall storytelling. Together, the essays in Comics and Catharsis show how people who have suffered trauma often flock to these works to find a way to acknowledge and process their own suffering.

The Body and the Senses in Greek Tragedy
The Body and the Senses in Greek Tragedy is the first book to approach the corporeality of Greek drama in terms of its capacity to involve audiences in the construction of meaning, not only on an affective but also on an intellectual level. Afroditi Angelopoulou argues that the inner workings of theatre, and the reasons behind its effectiveness, can be located in the lived, sentient body as the root of human thought, experience, and awareness. Drawing on theories of embodiment, theatre, and performance studies, this study shows that investigating the playwrights' sustained and varied use of elements of corporeality is essential for uncovering the meaning of tragic narratives, whether experienced in live performance or as a text. Through close readings of select plays, Angelopoulou explores the intricate connections between sensory experience, language, physical movement, and affect, focusing on the way inter-corporeal processes unfold on the stage and within the theatre space. Egyptian Gothic
The Egyptian Gothic consists of novels and short stories about ancient Egyptian mummies returning to life to seek retribution or romance as well as cursed object tales. Now mostly forgotten, from the 1880s through to the 1920s it was more popular than the vampire genre. This book is the first to examine the genre by using the frequent sensory descriptions within these texts to interrogate attitudes towards Empire. Its aims are twofold. Firstly, it demonstrates that despite their status as disposable popular fiction these texts are rich in sensory discourses that have thus far been unexamined. Secondly, reading these discourses of touch, sight, smell, sound and taste reveals new and intriguing ways in which Egypt is allowed to strike back against the British Empire. The book argues that the Egyptian Gothic does not support the domination of Empire, but instead presents a power dynamic in flux with the mummy fighting back against Western occupation. Egypt and its artefacts evoke simultaneous feelings of fear and desire, where those who meddle by invading tombs or stealing mummies are destroyed by Egyptian revenants.

Across more than 30 chapters spanning migration, queerness, and climate change, this handbook captures how the interdisciplinary and intersectional endeavor of Age(ing) studies has shaped contemporary literary and film studies. In the early 21st century, the literary study of age and ageing in its cultural context has 'come of age': it has come to supplement and challenge a public discourse on ageing seen mainly as a political and demographic 'problem' in many countries of the world. Following a tripartite structure, it looks first at literary and film genres and how they have been shaped by knowledge about age and ageing, incorporating both narrative genres as well as poetry, drama and imagery. The second section includes chapters on key themes and concepts in Age(ing) Studies with examples from film and literature. The third section brings together case studies focussing on individual artists, national traditions and global ageing. The Political Uses of Literature
Drawing on a global history of politicized writing, this book explores literature's utility as a mode of activism and aesthetic engagement with the political challenges of the current moment.The question of literature's 'uses' has recently become a key topic of academic and public debate. Paradoxically, however, these conversations often tend to bypass the rich history of engagements with literature's distinctly political uses that form such a powerful current of 20th- and 21st-century artistic production and critical-theoretical reflection. The Political Uses of Literaturereopens discussion of literature's political and activist genealogies along several interrelated lines: As a foundational moment, it draws attention to the important body of interwar politicized literature and to debates about literature's ability to intervene in social reality. It then traces the mobilization of related conversations and artistic practices across several historical conjunctures, most notably the committed literature of the 1960s and our own present. In mapping out these geographically and artistically diverse traditions - including case studies from the Americas, Europe, Africa, India and Russia - contributors advance critical discussions in the field, making questions pertaining to politicized art newly compelling to a broader and more diverse readership. Most importantly, this volume insists on the need to think about literature's political uses today - at a time when it has become increasingly difficult to imagine any kind of political efficacy for art, even as the need to do so is growing more and more acute.
