The Short Story

Mercier Press 出版
2025/07/09 出版

In this enduring classic, renowned Irish author Se獺n O'Faol獺in offers a penetrating examination of what makes great short fiction work. Drawing from his experience as both a master practitioner and dedicated teacher of the form, Faol獺in provides aspiring writers with insights that have remained relevant for over seven decades. The heart of O'Faol獺in's approach lies not in technical formulas but in his insistence that good writing begins with authentic perception. Through clear-eyed analysis and memorable examples, he demonstrates why so many aspiring writers fail-not for lack of technique, but because they have not truly learned to see the world around them.O'Faol獺in challenges the notion that ordinary lives provide insufficient material for fiction, pointing to writers like Dickens and Maupassant who transformed humble experiences into enduring literature. He argues persuasively that the bank clerk who claims to have nothing to write about has missed the essential truth: that the writer's gift lies not in extraordinary circumstances but in extraordinary awareness.Blending practical advice with philosophical depth, this vintage gem from the post-war literary renaissance stands as both a practical guide and a passionate defense of authenticity in fiction. For anyone serious about the craft of short stories, O'Faol獺in's candid, sometimes bracingly direct counsel remains as valuable today as when first written.

The Rise of Celebrity Authorship

2025/07/08 出版

Literary celebrity in the nineteenth century emerged from a miscellaneous array of trending print forms, including antislavery writing, which was a popular, consumable form of literature in the period. Antislavery print culture could function as a pop culture, leveraging cultural myths about gender and authorship through print forms that connected readers with writers: printed collections of author signatures, descriptions of writers' homes, autobiography, biography, and travel writing. The Rise of Celebrity Authorship traces surprising relations among figures and across shared forms in the period: What do antislavery forms and figures tell us about literary celebrity and the networks of transatlantic print culture? Sarah Danielle Allison illuminates the collective creation of celebrity by tracing unexpected connections within this anarchic nineteenth-century literary marketplace. Bringing together book history with more recent computational approaches, The Rise of Celebrity Authorship shifts focus from the conventional literary work of major writers to the breadth of print forms circulating around them. Allison considers a variety of texts adjacent to the novel, including Edgar Allan Poe's satire of autograph collecting, antislavery gift books, and a Southern travelogue by the Swedish writer Frederika Bremer. She draws striking parallels between two starkly different 1858 texts: Elizabeth Gaskell's biography of Charlotte Bront禱, which sought to unearth the reality behind Jane Eyre, and Josiah Henson's autobiography, which circulated as the life of the "original Uncle Tom." A rich account of the competing and complementary forces that shape images of authors, this book reveals the collaborative work of literary production and celebrity.

Studies in Arthurian and Chronicle Traditions in Memory of Fiona Tolhurst

2025/07/07 出版

Essays examining Arthurian and Chronicle texts, contexts, and reception, in honour of Fiona Tolhurst's contributions to Arthurian Studies. In her all-too-short but ground-breaking academic career, Fiona Tolhurst made significant contributions to the discipline of Arthurian Studies, advancing, amongst much else, understanding of Geoffrey of Monmouth, Arthurian Women, the English Mortes, and modern Arthuriana, including cinematic versions of the legend. The essays assembled here reflect her commitment to explication of Arthurian and Chronicle texts and contexts. Several engage with Geoffrey of Monmouth, examining, among other topics, the depiction of women in his narrative of British origins; the function of giants and significance of landscape and geography in his writings; the contrast between Geoffrey's Trojan-British empire and the Graeco-Egyptian foundation narratives of Scottish and Irish chronicles; and the reception and use of his writing from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries. Other contributors consider characterization and politics in the Brut tradition and Malory; the puzzling dualities of the alliterative Morte; the reception of Malory's "Trystram"; continuities between medieval and modern readings of the Morte Darthur; and the uses, adaptation, and appropriation of Arthurian themes and ideals in the twenty-first century.

Sean O'Casey in Context

James,Moran  著
2025/07/06 出版

Sean O'Casey is one of Ireland's best-known writers. He is the most frequently performed playwright in the history of the Irish National Theatre, and his work is often revived onstage elsewhere. O'Casey is also widely studied in schools, colleges, and universities in the English-speaking world. This book offers a new contextualisation of this famous writer's work, revisiting his association with Irish nationalism, historical revisionism, and celebrated contemporaries such as W. B. Yeats and Lady Gregory. The volume also brings O'Casey's work into contact with topics including disability studies, gender and sexuality, post-colonialism, ecocriticism, and race. Sean O'Casey in Context explores a number of existing ideas about O'Casey in the light of new academic developments, and updates our understanding of this important writer by taking into account recent scholarly thinking and a range of theatrical productions from around the globe.

Masculinity in Contemporary Science Fiction by Men

2025/07/06 出版

Masculinity in Contemporary Science Fiction by Men: No Plans for the Future is the first comprehensive study of the self-representation of men in SF novels published in the twenty-first century by male authors. Exploring a broad selection of writers and works, the fourteen chapters present a panoramic overview of men's contributions to current SF and explore their slow but noticeable progress in the representation of gender. The impact of feminism and gender studies, and the demands of readers, have profoundly transformed men's SF, which now presents far more caring and vulnerable male characters. The old stereotypes are being replaced by a collective reflection on how men and masculinity are changing, though the lack of a common agenda results in novels that, while exciting and often challenging, sometimes miss the chance to imagine a better, anti-patriarchal, pro-feminist future for men and for all human beings. The authors analysed include Robert Charles Wilson, Geoff Ryman, Samuel R. Delany, Richard K. Morgan, John Scalzi, Iain M. Banks, Ernest Cline, James S.A. Corey, Colson Whitehead, Andy Weir, Daniel H. Wilson, Ian McDonald, Yoon Ha Lee, Tade Thompson, Neal Stephenson and Kim Stanley Robinson.

Eyes in the Wood

Eleanor,Rees  著
2025/07/06 出版

Eleanor Rees' Eyes in the Wood: Occasional Prose is a meditative and exploratory collection that considers poetry as a situated, permeable practice grounded in place, ecology, and attention. Moving between reflective essay, lyric fragment, and critical enquiry, Rees develops a poetics that is both relational and speculative, drawing on lived experience, myth, and ecological thought. Her prose resists academic fixity, favouring instead a dynamic, processual mode of thinking that unfolds through landscape, memory, and sensory perception. The result is a richly textured work that approaches language as a means of encounter-open-ended, affective, and materially bound.

Crime Fiction and the Holocaust

Palgrave M 出版
2025/07/04 出版

This book explores a wide range of twentieth and twenty-first century international fiction that engages with the Holocaust and its historical legacy. It examines the use of tropes of crime and detection in the representation of historical atrocity in both explicit crime fiction and in literary fiction that relies on some of crime fiction's signature techniques. Crime Fiction and the Holocaust asks why patterns of detection have become a favoured method of fictional engagement with the Holocaust, considers the ethical and textual problematics of fictional encounters with real-world suffering, and delineates crime fiction's formal and thematic contributions to the broader project of Holocaust fiction.

Sacred Geographies in Victorian Literature

Keith,Hanley  著
Palgrave M 出版
2025/07/04 出版

This book describes how Christian sacred geographies were represented in Victorian literature. It demonstrates first how those from the Hebrew Bible and the Old and New Testaments had become politically domesticated and psychologically internalised to sustain the Victorian Protestant imaginary in art and literature. It then examines how, following the relocation of the centre of Christendom from Jerusalem to Rome in the Middle Ages, the geographical axis between Rome and Britain had been disrupted during the period of Catholic penalisation but was restored by Emancipation and conversion in the nineteenth century. As a result of these national relocations, a literary atlas of sacred heterotopias, other worlds, was mapped by Protestant and Catholic writers within their industrial-imperialist period. Intended for a primary readership of academics and researchers in the field of Victorian Literature, Religious Studies and History, it focuses on the works of nine writers in a variety of genres, including poetry, novels, art criticism, and historical, literary and theological essays.

A Companion to Early Iberian Traditional Lyrics

Tamesis Books 出版
2025/07/04 出版

Accessible and reliable introduction in English to the earliest vernacular lyric poetry in the Iberian Peninsula. Dating to the tenth century, the earliest vernacular lyric poems in the Iberian Peninsula have been seen as evidence of an even older, oral, folk tradition and attest to the multicultural, multilingual nature of the genre from its very beginning. Primarily preserved in manuscript and printed songbooks, these poems were widely diffused across the Hispanic world. This Companion offers an accessible, reliable introduction in English to early Iberian traditional lyrics from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective, paying special attention to their multicultural origins and their complex nature as both oral and written compositions. The opening chapters discuss the importance of understanding this dual essence in studying traditional lyrics today, provide an outline of their structure and formal features, and offer a contemporary overview of the field. The volume then examines the kharjas, the cantigas de amigo, and the tradition of Catalan lyricism before turning to a comparison of popular lyrics with the poetry of the cancioneros and romanceros and the preservation of the tradition in Sephardic ballads. The final chapters examine the survival of popular lyrics into the modern era and explore a new means of interpreting these poems through musical archaeology and musicological studies.

The Odeon

Daniel,Tobin  著
LSU Press 出版
2025/07/04 出版

The Odeon, a new volume of essays by the celebrated poet and critic Daniel Tobin, takes its title from the classical Greek and Roman buildings designed for the presentation of musical and poetic compositions. Organized around the question of "sensibility"--with its various social, philosophical, and aesthetic connotations--the collection presents a sequence of related essays exploring both resonances and dissonances in the traditions of modern and contemporary poetry. Although Tobin surveys a broad spectrum of works--ranging from John Donne and Emily Dickinson to writers from the twenty-first century such as Mark Doty, Louise Gl羹ck, and Carl Phillips--his emphasis remains on details of poetic practice, technique, metaphysical outlook, and artistic aspiration. What most informs these essays is Tobin's own practice as a poet, his own sensibility, which is at once eclectic and yet very much calibrated to matters of what one theologian termed "ultimate concern." The Odeon offers an incisive foray into the state of the art of poetry in our time.

Disorder, Affect, and Modernist Literature

Palgrave M 出版
2025/07/04 出版

Modernist literature is defined by entropic characteristics. Its common themes include fragmentation, uncertainty, distrust, and misunderstanding. Alongside these themes, however, exists a desire to rebuild, to distill elements of past constructs into something that can provide stability in the chaotic present. Historically, modernist studies has focused on the former, without ample attention given to how entropic circumstances alter human emotion and affect. This book offers a new way of conceptualizing the modernist experience of alienation, disorder, and system deterioration as not merely negative, but productive in facilitating new structures of feeling and social adhesion. It pushes extant literary evaluations of entropy into a new realm by interrogating the human cost of entropic circumstances, and shows that we can use the process of entropy as a metaphorical lens through which to further understand the human connections and shared experiences reflected in modernist literature.

Nonrequired Reading

Ecco Press 出版
2025/07/04 出版

"She's accessible and deeply human and a joy--though it is a dark kind of joy--to read... She is a poet to live with." - Robert Hass, The Washington Post Book WorldWislawa Szymborska's poems are admired around the world, and her unsparing vision, tireless wit, and deep sense of humanity are cherished by countless readers. Unknown to most of them, however, Szymborska, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, also worked for several decades as a columnist, reviewing a wide variety of books under the unassuming title "Nonrequired Reading."As readers of her poems would expect, the short prose pieces collected here are anything but ordinary. Reflecting the author's own eclectic tastes and interests, the pretexts for these ruminations range from books on wallpapering, cooking, gardening, and yoga, to more lofty volumes on opera and world literature. Unpretentious yet incisive, these charming pieces are on a par with Szymborska's finest lyrics, tackling the same large and small questions with a wonderful curiosity.

Money and American Literature

2025/07/03 出版

Few topics are as central to the American literary imagination as money. American writers' preoccupations with money predate the foundation of the United States and persist to the present day. Writers have been among the sharpest critics and most enchanted observers of an American social world dominated by the 'cash nexus'; and they have reckoned with imaginative writing's own deep and ambivalent entanglements with the logics of inscription, circulation, and valuation that define the money economy itself. As a dominant measure of value, money has also profoundly shaped representations of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. American literature's engagements with money - and with directly related topics including debt, credit, finance, and the capitalist market - are among Americanists' most prominent concerns. This landmark volume synthesizes and builds upon the abundance of research in the field to provide the first comprehensive mapping of money's crucial role over five centuries of American literary history.

Embodiment in Nineteenth-Century American Literature

2025/07/03 出版

This book recovers an important set of American literary texts from the turn of the nineteenth century to the Civil War that focus on bodies that seem to have minds of their own. Artists such as Charles Brockden Brown, Robert Montgomery Bird, Edwin Forrest, Henry Box Brown, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, and Herman Melville represented the evocative expressiveness of these literary bodies. With twitches and roars, flushes and blushes, these lively literary bodies shaped the development of American Literature even as they challenged the structures of chattel slavery, market capitalism, and the patriarchy. Situated within its historical context, this new story of nineteenth-century American Literature thus reveals how American literary expression-from novels to melodramas, from panoramas to magic tricks-represented less repressive, more capacious possibilities of conscious existence, and new forms of the human for those dehumanized in the nineteenth century.

Wordsworth and English Literary Pilgrimage in the Nineteenth Century

Keith,Hanley  著
2025/07/03 出版

Using Wordsworth as a focal point, this book describes how, in the period of Romanticism and beyond, the historical practice of pilgrimage became internalised figuratively and psychologically so as to represent Christian discourse in nineteenth-century English literature. It surveys the imaginative relocation of Jerusalem and Rome to real and present places, thereby creating the nation's sacred imaginary. Wordsworth is presented as central to founding a literary religious discourse on the sacred site of the Lake District. Also explored are the ways in which other Victorian writers such as Ruskin and Newman participated in that construction by their own literary pilgrimages. Overall, this book revises assumptions about the decline of the religious imagination in nineteenth-century English literature and fundamentally reappraises the function of Romantic and Victorian representations of the sacred in forming the nation and empire.

Kathleen Raine

2025/07/03 出版

For the poet and scholar Kathleen Raine, ancient textswere not obsolete, but vital handbooks for reading reality. Drawing on Graeco-Roman philosophy alongside modernist receptions of the ancient world, this book is the first study of her engagement with classical antiquity. Raine's interpretation of the classical past not only informed her literary work, but also gave her a compelling perspective, which located consciousness as the basis of reality. This way of seeing the world, traceable from antiquity to the present day via the 'perennial philosophy', claimed little distinction between inner self and outer world, and stressed the interconnectedness of all beings. Jenny Messenger explores Raine's use of Graeco-Roman philosophy as source texts for understanding consciousness, articulated throughout her poetry, scholarship and autobiographical writing. Raine believed there were multiple planes of consciousness, across which symbolic poetry and prose could operate to reach the highest levels of being. The creative arts were even capable of shaping consciousness, expanding or shrinking the scope of what could be experienced. Though she won acclaim during her lifetime, her literary reputation has been overshadowed by her relationship with writer and naturalist Gavin Maxwell. This book moves the focus back to Raine's work, bringing her complex classicism to a wider audience.

Dante and the Practice of Humility

2025/07/03 出版

In this book, Rachel Teubner offers an exploration of humility in Dante's Divine Comedy, arguing that the poem is an ascetical exercise concerned with training its author gradually in the practice of humility, rather than being a reflection of authorial hubris. A contribution to recent scholarship that considers the poem to be a work of self-examination, her volume investigates its scriptural, literary, and liturgical sources, also offering fresh feminist perspectives on its theological challenges. Teubner demonstrates how the poetry of the Comedy is theologically significant, focusing especially on the poem's definition of humility as ethically and artistically meaningful. Interrogating the text canto by canto, she also reveals how contemporary tools of literary analysis can offer new insights into its meaning. Undergraduate and novice readers will benefit from this companion, just as theologians and scholars of medieval religion will be introduced to a growing body of scholarship exploring Dante's religious thought.

The African Heritage of Latinx and Caribbean Literature

2025/07/03 出版

The African Heritage of Latinx and Caribbean Literature unearths a buried African archive within widely-read Latinx writers of the last fifty years. It challenges dominant narratives in World Literature and transatlantic studies that ignore Africa's impact in broader Latin American culture. Sarah Quesada argues that these canonical works evoke textual memorials of African memory. She shows how the African Atlantic haunts modern Latinx and Caribbean writing, and examines the disavowal or distortion of the African subject in the constructions of national, racial, sexual, and spiritual Latinx identity. Quesada shows how themes such as the 19th century 'scramble for Africa, ' the decolonizing wars, Black internationalism, and the neoliberal turn are embedded in key narratives. Drawing from multilingual archives about West and Central Africa, she examines how the legacies of colonial French, Iberian, British and U.S. Imperialisms have impacted on the relationships between African and Latinx identities. This is the first book-length project to address the African colonial and imperial inheritance of Latinx literature.

Class, Whiteness, and Southern Literature

Jolene,Hubbs  著
2025/07/03 出版

Class, Whiteness, and Southern Literature explores the role that representations of poor white people play in shaping both middle-class American identity and major American literary movements and genres across the long twentieth century. Jolene Hubbs reveals that, more often than not, poor white characters imagined by middle-class writers embody what better-off people are anxious to distance themselves from in a given moment. Poor white southerners are cast as social climbers during the status-conscious Gilded Age, country rubes in the modern era, racist obstacles to progress during the civil rights struggle, and junk food devotees in the health-conscious 1990s. Hubbs illuminates how Charles Chesnutt, William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Dorothy Allison, and Barbara Robinette Moss swam against these tides, pioneering formal innovations with an eye to representing poor white characters in new ways.

Istanbul and the Ottoman Empire in Romantic and Victorian Culture

2025/07/02 出版

Piya Pal-Lapinski explores the transformation of the Ottoman empire (and its Byzantine ghosts) during the period 1800-1876 in terms of its crucial impact on British and European transnational identities. From Romantic Byzantium to operatic sultans and vampiric janissaries, the arc of this book takes on a fascinating but often overlooked area of 19th century literary studies - the encounter with Constantinople/Istanbul, "the diamond between two sapphires" on the Bosphorus and the effect of the city's complicated history on Romantic /Victorian writers and artists. Drawing on unpublished, archival material on Thomas Hope and Julia Pardoe, she provides fresh readings of these writers as well as Byron, Disraeli, Scott and Mary Shelley, among others. Taking up the problems posed by the existence of a global, cosmopolitan empire with its center in Istanbul and control over borderlands known as "Turkey- in -Europe," the book examines these issues against the background of the rise of nationalist movements and ethnic affiliations in the 19th century. Istanbul and the Ottoman Empire in Romantic and Victorian Culture proposes a new approach to understanding the final century of a significant non-Western, Islamic empire.

Say Something Nice About Me

Sara,Schaff  著
Augury Books 出版
2025/07/02 出版

In the twelve stories in this engrossing collection, Sara Schaff introduces us to characters at turning points in their lives; in doing so, she charts the way we take risks-or create illusions-in the face of the unknown. A newly blended family's vacation is upended by one daughter's mythmaking and another's eagerness to believe her. A young couple on the verge of breaking up take one last trip together, only to have their reconciliation disrupted by uninvited guests. A woman faces accusations of theft by the very people who think they have saved her from a troubled past. In beautiful prose that is sometimes dark, sometimes humorous, Schaff 's stories grapple with class, sexuality, and relationships in ways that feel revelatory and yet deeply true. Awkward, flawed, and hopeful, these characters' stories hum with the regrets and desires that drive us-sometimes closer to our goals, sometimes heartbreakingly further away.

Hiccups

Joe,Pan  著
Augury Books 出版
2025/07/02 出版

Taking cues from a myriad of short forms-haiku, epigram, bon mot, aphorism, senryū-the poems in Joe Pan's Hiccups search out unexpected ways to document events in transition. Here the imminent moment, deeply regarded, is agitated into performance or merely left to drift, generating through language a curious experience of its own making. The disparate settings of these poems are as diverse as the impulses that gave rise to the work-a Tokyo skyscraper, a South African wildlife preserve, a log cabin in the Pacific Northwest, a shark-infested reef off Belize. These are poems that arrive with a jolt, engulfing the familiar, before being left to linger or dissolve.

30 Climate Cops Later

Duo 出版
2025/07/02 出版

Since their inception, the United Nations Climate Change Conferences--or Conference of the Parties (COPs)--have shaped the global response to climate change. These high-stakes gatherings bring together world leaders, scientists, activists, and policymakers to negotiate the future of our planet. Yet, despite increasing media attention, the inner workings of these forums remain complex and often misunderstood. As COP30 takes place in 2025, 30 Climate COP Later takes a critical look at the past three decades of climate negotiations. Have these conferences driven real progress? Through the voices of key Canadian figures--diplomats, scientists, NGO leaders, journalists, and policymakers--this book offers a rare, behind-the-scenes perspective on the triumphs, setbacks, and turning points that have defined the COPs. With firsthand accounts and candid reflections, contributors share personal experiences, pivotal moments, and insights into Canada's evolving role in international climate diplomacy. From historic agreements to missed opportunities, their stories provide a nuanced view of the challenges and achievements of global climate negotiations. Written for a wide audience--including students, professionals, and anyone passionate about climate action--this book sheds light on the COP process and its impact. As the climate crisis intensifies, it asks a pressing question: Can these negotiations still deliver the solutions we so urgently need?

Hampshire Days

W H,Hudson  著
2025/07/02 出版

Hampshire Days by W.H. Hudson is a masterful collection of naturalist observations that captures the essence of England's countryside through the keen eyes of one of its most celebrated nature writers. This intimate chronicle documents Hudson's extended stay in the New Forest ecology during 1902-1903, blending scientific precision with poetic prose to immortalize a vanishing rural England. The book opens with vivid seasonal portraits autumn oaks clinging to golden leaves in December gales, winter's skeletal landscapes giving way to the "delectable bird-months" of spring. Central to the narrative is Hudson's residence at a 17th-century cottage near Boldre Water, which becomes a living laboratory for studying wildlife essays in microcosm. He meticulously records: The symbiotic drama between weasels and voles ("Nature's little blood-letter") Cuckoos commandeering robins' nests with Darwinian ruthlessness Shrews blundering into flowerpots and woodpeckers' rhythmic drumming Beyond Edwardian nature writing, Hudson delivers sharp ecological critiques. He laments the New Forest's degradation by human exploitation while celebrating resilient species like the tenacious Forest fly. The final chapters expand into philosophical meditations on mortality from ancient burial mounds to the annual die-off of migratory birds asking profound questions about humanity's place in nature's cycles.

The Ghazal Eros

Shad,Naved  著
Tulika Books 出版
2025/07/01 出版

The old ghazal, i.e. the poetry of eros in Urdu, Persian and Arabic, has been read as great literature but seldom as a document of history. This book argues that there is one element - the expression of masculine passion (ʽishq) for a masculine object - that has shaped the ghazal historically and across languages. The neglect of this element, which it terms lyric queerness, in mainstream cultural history and even LGBTQ studies, screens from us a lyrical corpus that was historically aware, vernacularizing, and suspicious of other-worldly interpretations and is represented here by the ghazal of the Indian subcontinent.
