Transformations of Oral and Written Narratives
The oral tradition, which is diverse and naturally fluid, shows remarkable stability at various narrative levels. The changes not only depend on the specific use of memory, but also on deliberate alterations introduced into the narrative by individual interpreters. The modifications in the oral tradition arise from adaptive needs, including those related to changes occurring in a particular community, which enable and perhaps even compel the interpreter to adapt the transmitted stories in some way. The transition to a literate culture only seemingly stops the process of adaptive changes. The criterion of originality emerges, which fixed the story, although it's final form is the result of a variety of factors. Quite frequently changes result from the transfer of narratives to ethnically and linguistically diverse cultures or from the transfer to a different medium of communication, such as a medium that uses body movements or images. Transformations of oral and written narratives presents a multifaceted approach to the question of changes in narratives, taking into account differences between oral and written cultures. Their authors, each from his/her research position, explore the phenomenon of change in storytelling, ist dynamics and determinants, as well as the complex relationships between various ways in which narrative forms have been adapted across cultures. Bringing together the perspectives of cognitive, anthropological, folklore and philological research in one collection allows for a multi-sided and competent approach, and one that considers both the cognitive capacities of the human species and cultural divergences.
Self-Optimization in Modernist Culture
Our contemporary society is obsessed with the idea of self-optimization, a concept that implies the need to constantly work on improving oneself and one's appearance. The roots of postmodern self-optimization, however, lie in the cultural industries that emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. With its equally profound and transient interest in new forms of expression, new ways of life, and new technologies, modernism thoroughly and critically embraced the idea of the self as something that can be created and recreated, either in accordance with or in contradiction to social norms. This book explores strategies of self-optimization developed in modernist literature and culture. In doing so, it offers a panoramic view of an often-overlooked aspect of European and North American modernity that anticipates our current postmodern crisis of the self.

New York Nouveau
Postwar French writers were at the vanguard of global literary innovation-from the experimental minimalism of the Nouveau Roman to the literary games of the OuLiPo-but less often appreciated is the extent to which they worked closely with US editors and translators, published actively with American presses, and often theorized transatlantic connections within their work. In this exciting new work, Sara Kippur proposes a new French literary history that traces the deep connections between postwar literary experimentalism and the New York publishing industry, compellingly arguing that US-based editors, publishers, producers, professors, and translators crucially intervened to shape French literature. While Kippur attends closely to well-known writers such as Marguerite Duras, Samuel Beckett, Eug癡ne Ionesco, Georges Perec, and Alain Robbe-Grillet, she also amplifies the voices of those who have been less visible, though no less relevant, including women whose contributions have not received proper credit but who helped to foster a sense of new possibilities for twentieth-century French writing. With these untold histories, stitched together in this book through new archival discoveries from special collections and personal archives on both sides of the Atlantic, Kippur begins to dismantle rigid notions of canonicity, authorship, and national literature.
