The Waltzing Body in Victorian Literature

2025/06/17 出版

The Waltzing Body in Victorian Literature: Narratives of Sexuality and Power traces the evolution of the waltz from a taboo dance in the early nineteenth century to a gracefully nostalgic practice that must be preserved by the century's end. While Sabrina Gilchrist Hadyk references eighteenth-century authors to frame the waltz's initial reception in England, the study focuses primarily on Victorian authors who shaped how and why this dance was paradoxically viewed as elegant, effeminate, and sterile. Hadyk explores female sexuality and the concept of choice in the ballroom; a shifting and sometimes contradictory understanding of masculinity through male performance; the erasure of and reclamation of queer desire in heterosexual courting spaces; and the rhetoric of new technologies that attempted to contain, shape, and memorialize a temporal art form. A brief epilogue considers how late-Victorian (and heavily sanitized and romanticized) depictions of the waltz reverberate today in popular films and reality TV, which perpetuate Victorian assumptions about class, gender, sexuality, and more. By understanding the history of the waltz, the reader is invited to examine the dizzying discomfort that many Victorians expressed about forging ahead into a modern (and modernizing) world, particularly at the turn of the century. With comparatively little scholarship around understanding dance scenes and dance semiotics in literature, this book articulates a new interpretive path for familiar and unfamiliar nineteenth-century narratives, offering new ways of understanding and engaging with the role and culture of dance.

Roman Readings: Latin Poetry from Lucretius to Ovid

de Gruyter 出版
2025/06/17 出版

This volume collects seventeen pieces on the classical Latin poetry of the late Republican and Augustan period written and published since 2000. They share a common interest in the close reading of poems, with a particular focus on the issues of genre, intertextuality, poetic unity, political allusion, imagery and literary history. Topics treated include the proem to Lucretius I and its relation to Ennian models, issues of unity and interpretation in five poems of Catullus. On Vergil there are two studies of the similes of the Aeneid, one of Aeneas' narrative in Aeneid 2, one of Aeneid 6 as a journey into the epic past, one of Sibylline elements in the Aeneid and one of the language used by the Aeneid's gods, plus a new contribution to the old issue of the identity of the child in Eclogue 4. On Propertius, there are accounts of 4.9 and its contemporary political significance, and of how some other elegies in Book 4 function as expanded epigrams. The chapter on Ovid looks at the chronology and shape of his literary career. Taken together, these pieces seek to present these central texts of Roman poetry for modern literary study by scholars and advanced students.

Subordination and Insubordination in Post-Classical Greek

de Gruyter 出版
2025/06/17 出版

This volume presents the first comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon of (in)subordination in Post-Classical Greek (III BCE - VI AD) from a modern linguistic perspective. The contributions provide new findings into the syntax of the Post-Classical Greek sentence along four main dimensions. First, several studies investigate the diachrony of subordinate and insubordinate clause structures, both in Post-Classical Greek and the history of Greek more generally. Second, contributions demarcate the influence of language contact on the continuity and change of clausal strategies. Third, the diverse syntactic and pragmatic factors involved in different types of finite and non-finite subordination are detailed. Fourth, the phenomenon of subordination as found in specific text types and collections is contextualized, incorporating insights from historical sociolinguistics. This book aims to be a reference point not only to Greek scholars working on the Post-classical period and the specific corpora addressed in the volume, but also to general linguists interested in the syntax of (in)subordination and the application of modern linguistic approaches to historical languages.

Labor Imperfectus

de Gruyter 出版
2025/06/17 出版

Unfinishedness and incompleteness are a central feature of ancient Greek and Roman literature that has often been taken for granted but not deeply examined; many texts have been transmitted to us incomplete. How and to what extent has this feature of many texts influenced their aesthetic perception and interpretation, and how does it still influence them today? Also, how do various editorial arrangements of fragmentary texts influence the reconstruction of closure? These important questions offer the opportunity to bring together specialists working on Greek and Roman texts across various genres: epic, tragedy, poetry, mythographic texts, rhetorical texts, philosophical treatises, and the novel. Reading a text by focusing on its current unfinishedness or incompleteness, or the textual signs suggesting an unfinished or incomplete state, the contributors examine the relations between author, reader and text as underscored by the verbal, generic and aesthetic features of each work. This edited volume brings together a broad spectrum of approaches to ancient and modern texts and aims to reach out to a broad scholarly community consisting not only of Classicists but also scholars of other literature and aesthetics.

Jewish Literatures in Spanish and Portuguese

Ruth,Fine  著
de Gruyter 出版
2025/06/17 出版

This volume offers a thorough introduction to Jewish world literatures in Spanish and Portuguese, which not only addresses the coexistence of cultures, but also the functions of a literary and linguistic space of negotiation in this context. From the Middle Ages to present day, the compendium explores the main Jewish chapters within Spanish- and Portuguese-language world literature, whether from Europe, Latin America, or other parts of the world. No comprehensive survey of this area has been undertaken so far. Yet only a broad focus of this kind can show how diasporic Jewish literatures have been (and are ) - while closely tied to their own traditions - deeply intertwined with local and global literary developments; and how the aesthetic praxis they introduced played a decisive, formative role in the history of literature. With this epistemic claim, the volume aims at steering clear of isolationist approaches to Jewish literatures.

Plato’s Proto-Narratology

de Gruyter 出版
2025/06/17 出版

Plato's contribution to narratology has traditionally been traced in his tripartite categorisation of narrative modes we read of in the Republic. Although other aspects of storytelling are also addressed throughout the Platonic oeuvre, such passages are treated as instantaneous flares of metanarrative speculation on Plato's part and do not seem to contribute to the reconstruction of his 'theory of narrative'. Vasileios Liotsakis challenges this view and argues that the Statesman, the Timaeus/Critias and the Laws reveal that Plato had consolidated in his mind and compositionally put into effect one systematic mode in which to express his thoughts on narratives. In these dialogues Liotsakis recognizes the birth of a proto-narratology which differs in many respects from what we today expect from a narratological handbook, but still demonstrates two key-features of narratology: (a) a conscious focus on certain aspects of narrativity which are vastly discussed by narratologists and pertain to the structuring and reception of narratives; and (b) a schematised mode of interaction between metanarrative reflections and textual bodies which serve as the paradigms through which to explore the interpretive potential of these reflections.

The First Witches

2025/06/17 出版

Traces the literary evolution of female figures like Hecate and Circe into archetypal witches, shaping enduring Western perceptions of witchcraft. The First Witches: Women of Power in the Classical World takes you on a journey into the world of Classical literature, from the adventurous Homeric epic of the Odyssey to the grim warfare of Lucan's De Bello Civili. In doing so, you will be introduced to a handful of powerful women who will later be labelled as "witches". The chapters focus upon two specific groups of women from the Graeco-Roman world: the divine Hecate and the formidable yet beautiful Circe, who first feature in Greek texts, and the nefarious Thessalian witches and Erictho, who become marked antagonists in Roman literature. Both Hecate and Circe are fundamentally divine, yet early in their mythologies, they harbour characteristics that will become distinct tropes of witchcraft from being associated with the underworld, lunar lore and dangerous transformative powers. With the onset of increased social tensions in the late Roman Republican to early imperial periods, these divine women become increasingly more demonised within the literature, culminating in Hecate becoming a consort for witches and Circe a seductress and the epitome of the femme fatale.Simultaneous to these representations, Roman writers adopted a stock character within prose and verse of the hag-witch who was shocking in both appearance and character, displaying many elements of moral turpitude and a disturbing penchant for bestial activities such as cannibalism and the kidnapping and killing of infants. Thus, the hag-witch, most commonly associated with the world of the modern witch hunts and within the pages of modern fairy tale, was born. This book, therefore, provides a readable overview of how the Western witch originated. So profound was the impact of the classical witch upon Western thought and literature that she even lives on today as a prototype of the gruesome woman found in folklore, horror stories and movies. This is why the studying and reading of classical works is so relevant today as it was for our forebears since the literature contains the very ingredients that help to captivate our imaginations and our fears. The authors of the literature and the characters within it will continue to serve as powerful reminders of how the Western world came to be.
