Shakespearean Biofiction on the Contemporary Stage and Screen

Edel,Semple  著
Arden Shakes 出版
2025/06/13 出版

This bookis the first edited collection to explore Shakespeare's life as depicted on the modern stage and screen. Focusing on the years 1998-2023, it uniquely identifies a 25-year trend for depicting Shakespeare, his family and his social circle in theatre, film and television. Interrogating Shakespeare's afterlife across stage and screen media, the volume explores continuities and changes in the form since the release of Shakespeare in Love, which it positions as the progenitor of recent Shakespearean biofictions in Anglo-American culture. It traces these developments through the 21st century, from pivotal moments such as the Shakespeare 400 celebrations in 2016, up to the quatercentenary of the publication of the First Folio, whose portrait helped make the author a globally recognisable icon. The collection takes account of recent Anglo-American socio-political, cultural and literary concerns including feminism, digital media and the biopic and superhero genres. The wide variety of works discussed range from All is True and Hamnet to Upstart Crow, Billand even The Lego Movie. Offering insights from actors, dramatists and literary and performance scholars, it considers why artists are drawn to Shakespeare as a character and how theatre and screen media mediate his status as literary genius.

Cosmo-Modernism and Theater in India

2025/06/13 出版

Urban theater took shape in postindependence India as a large and complex field produced in more than sixteen major languages, including Bengali, Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati, and Kannada. The cosmopolitan engagement of leading playwrights with modernist and postcolonial literary movements around the world created distinctly new aesthetic and political approaches to Indian myth, history, and sociocultural experience, which had become the most prominent subjects in modern Indian drama. Yet even as critics and scholars of global modernism have increasingly turned their attention beyond North America and Europe, they continue to focus on dominant world languages at the expense of multilingual cultures such as India's. Despite their originality and significance, modernist works written in Indian languages other than English remain neglected. In Cosmo-Modernism and Theater in India, Aparna Bhargava Dharwadker develops a new framework for understanding non-Anglophone Indian modernisms by recovering crucial theoretical concepts and using them to analyze the writing, staging, and reception of major plays in multiple languages. She argues that the output of prominent mid- to late-twentieth-century playwrights such as Dharamvir Bharati, Mohan Rakesh, Badal Sircar, Vijay Tendulkar, Girish Karnad, and Habib Tanvir registers a decisive rupture from nineteenth-century forms of colonial modernity. In representing the ancient Indian past, the postcolonial urban present, and the rich repertoire of precolonial performance traditions, these authors' works became highly inventive expressions of modernist classicism, realism, and traditionalism. Dharwadker shows how a decommercialized performance economy and the incessant activity of translation further enhanced modernist production, and she connects Indian modernisms to regional, national, and transnational networks. Offering bold new insights into the theory and practice of modernist drama, this book delivers a radical remapping of global modernisms.

Oshun, Lemonade, and Intertextuality

2025/06/13 出版

Exploring how Afro-Atlantic religion has been used to portray Black womanhood by writers and artists from Beyonc矇 to Ntozake ShangeIn this book, Sheneese Thompson analyzes works of film and literature to explore how Afro-Atlantic religion intersects with themes of resilience in Black femininity and womanhood. Focusing on Beyonc矇's visual album Lemonade, Thompson examines iconography of the Yoruba goddess Oshun, represented by rivers, the color yellow, and other symbols. Thompson argues that Beyonc矇's tribute to Oshun creates a narrative of self-repossession amid external definitions, generational trauma, and emotional violence and draws connections to other works that feature similar religious references.Oshun, "Lemonade," and Intertextuality also explores Beyonc矇's album Black Is King, the television series She's Gotta Have It, Julie Dash's movie Daughters of the Dust, Ntozake Shange's novel Sassafrass, Cypress & Indigo, and Jamaica Kincaid's stories in At the Bottom of the River. These works highlight the significance ofAfrican traditional religions for the healing and transformation of their characters. Thompson discusses the ways in which Yoruba and Lucum穩 imagery and practices such as or穩k穫, or praise poetry, have long been incorporated into Black cultural texts such as these to tell stories of racial and gender-based injustices. In looking at Lemonade together with influential older texts created by Black women, Thompson establishes the use of Afro-Atlantic religion--to think through Black womanhood, to explore self-defined sexuality--as a central tenet of Black women's literature, one that these artists and writers have brought to the global stage.Publication of this work made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Shakespeare in the ’Post’colonies

Amrita,Dhar  著
Arden Shakes 出版
2025/06/13 出版

Shakespeare in the 'Post'Colonies provides a wide-ranging examination of engagements with and adaptations of Shakespeare in regions that were once under European colonial rule. Arguing for the 'Post'Colonies as a distinct category within Global Shakespeares, this volume explores the reality of 21st-century Shakespeares in geographies of post-colonial and postcolonial inheritance, such as continental Africa, Australasia, the Arab world, the Indian subcontinent, East Asia and the Americas. As former colonies in Asia and Africa cross fifty and even seventy years of political independence, contributors re-examine the presence of Shakespeare in marginalised or politically disenfranchised communities, interrogating how Shakespeare intersects with the internal and global power dynamics of post-independence nations. The essays cover a rich array of genres ranging from theatrical performances, translations, and cinematic adaptations to classroom strategies. They turn to texts that have often gone ignored and give voice to Shakespeare appropriations by subaltern groups. Essays address questions of race, gender, nationality, indigeneity, caste and class, shedding new light on the diverse range of contemporary Shakespeare engagements across the global 'Post'Colonies.

2025/06/12 出版

This edition presents the ?‡anti Parva of 璽€œThe Mahabharata, 璽€ translated into English prose by Kisari Mohan Ganguli. 璽€œThe Mahabharata, 璽€ attributed to Krishna-dwaipayana Vyasa, is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India. Automobility and the Anthropocene

2025/06/12 出版

The automobile has transformed Earth's habitats and humans' habits since the 1890s, when it, this Element argues, began the Anthropocene. Climate change now motivates efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, of which cars and trucks account for at least 10 percent. Shifting to electric vehicles is not enough; one needs to better understand the power cars hold over humans. Environmental humanities scholars examine human/machine hybrids but have ignored the most obvious example. Humans driving cars are social agents constituting a civil society of automobility in roadscape environments. This Element traces the evolution of cars from horsecars, carriages, and bicycles, and the influence of Henry Ford and Alfred P. Sloan on labor standards and consumer behaviors. As the car industry pushes high-tech autonomous or self-driving vehicles, it relies on futuristic fantasies and false promises. The ills of automobility cannot be solved with new products that only intensify human dependence upon cars.

Invoking Egypt

Obelisk Books 出版
2025/06/12 出版

Discover how the image of the mummy evolved from comic and romantic stories to the terrifying, wandering monsters of the 20th century. The first chapter tracks the mummy's shifting symbolism - from harmless preservation to menacing figure - a journey across genres and time periods. The second chapter explores the depiction of Pharaoh Akhenaten in works by Savitri Devi, especially her 1948 play Akhnaton. A fervent supporter of Nazism and Adolf Hitler, Devi portrays Akhenaten as an Aryan hero and a preacher of a nature-based religion, linking ancient Egypt to racial and environmental ideologies.Chapter 3 deals with Gwendolyn Macewen's novel King of Egypt, King of Dreams, a gripping study of Akhenaten's inner turmoil and tragic downfall, vividly portrayed with raw emotional power.Chapter 4 deals with Shelley's engagement with Egypt through the lenses of Egyptomania, Orientalism, and esotericism. Through Egyptian symbols, Shelley delves into his thematic preoccupations, expressing his disdain for warfare, vehement opposition of religious dogma, and his scathing critiques of tyranny. Egypt, with its iconic pyramids, sphinxes, and other monumental structures, assumes a dual role in Shelley's poetry, serving as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human accomplishments and a symbol of Oriental despotism. The last two chapters explore how Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra reflects Elizabethan ideas about Egypt. Explore how the Bard framed Cleopatra's legend within the cosmology and politics of his time. Shakespeare's Cleopatra is depicted as deeply rooted in the Egyptian landscape, her identity shaped and defined by the natural elements of her homeland. Sharing the qualities of the Nile, the fertile soil, and Egypt's flora and fauna, Cleopatra ultimately emerges as the embodiment of Egypt itself, rising from the very mud of the Nile and embodying a profound unity with Egypt's land and its elemental forces. The play's alchemical allusions reflect Shakespeare's absorption of the occult traditions of his time and his manipulation of that knowledge to serve his superb dramatic art.Why Read This Book?Delve into the captivating presence of Ancient Egypt in Western literature, from iconic plays and poems to compelling novels and short stories. This book offers an engaging exploration of how Western authors across diverse periods have interpreted and reimagined Egypt.Discover how Egypt's image has been reshaped for various purposes, including propaganda and ideological movements, ranging from Nazi symbolism to Afrocentric reclamation.Explore how Egyptian symbols, characters, and themes reflect a spectrum of emotions, from admiration to fear, across different eras. Understand the shifting perceptions of Egypt-from a land of profound wisdom and enigmatic mystery to a place of perceived danger, decadence, and intrigue.Perfect for history enthusiasts, literature aficionados, and pop culture lovers, this book provides a fascinating perspective on the reinterpretation and the occasional misuse of Egypt's ancient allure throughout history.

A History of English Georgic Writing

2025/06/12 出版

The interconnected themes of land and labour were a common recourse for English literary writers between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries, and in the twenty-first they have become pressing again in the work of nature writers, environmentalists, poets, novelists and dramatists. Written by a team of sixteen subject specialists, this volume surveys the literature of rural working lives and landscapes written in English between 1500 and the present day, offering a range of scholarly perspectives on the georgic tradition, with insights from literary criticism, historical scholarship, classics, post-colonial studies, rural studies and ecocriticism. Providing an overview of the current scholarship in georgic literature and criticism, this collection argues that the work of people and animals in farming communities, and the land as it is understood through that work, has provided writers in English with one of their most complex and enduring themes.
