Consentius’ de Barbarismis Et Metaplasmis

Tommaso,Mari  著
Ingram 出版
2021/07/28 出版

Consentius probably lived in Gaul in the fifth century. His Ars de barbarismis et metaplasmis is the most extensive ancient treatise on deviations from 'standard' Latin, both errors (barbarisms) and poetic licenses (metaplasms). This volume provides the first English translation in a new critical edition, which benefits from new evidence on its textual transmission. Error and poetic license were long-standing topics of Greek and Roman reflections on language, and by late antiquity were rigidly codified in Roman grammar. Consentius' discussion of poetic license is fairly traditional, though he adds an original appendix on licence that are involved in verse scansion. His discussion of error is more original, as he criticised mainstream grammarians who took their examples of error from poetry, and instead took examples of errors from spoken language. By doing so, Consentius provides us with an unparalleled insight into spoken Latin: his list of errors has been analysed over the years by students of non-standard and regional Latin as well as the Romance languages, and his comments on vowel quantity and quality, the accent, and the sound of certain consonants are still the subject of much scholarly debate. Mari's commentary explains the textual choices made in the edition and the linguistic and interpretive difficulties of the text, reconstructs the place of Consentius' doctrine within the ancient grammatical tradition, and illustrates the linguistic information provided by Consentius from the point of view of historical linguistics.

Chretien’s Equal: Raoul de Houdenc

Ingram 出版
2021/07/23 出版

The writers of later romances deemed Raoul's work worthy of memory on a par with the Prose Lancelot, and placed Raoul and Chr矇tien on the same level in terms of authority.Raoul de Houdenc was a major and innovative figure in 13th-century French literature. His surviving works are unusually diverse: they include an impassioned tract about the values of chivalry (The Romance of the Wings), two superbly crafted Arthurian romances (Meraugis of Portlesguez and The Avenging of Raguidel), and a swingeing polemic against declining standards especially among the bourgeoisie (The Burgess's Burgeoning Blight). And with his hugely influential satire The Dream of Hell he was the very first to compose allegory in the vernacular, mastering to perfection the art of parody and the unexpected. After a long period of neglect Raoul is finally receiving the scholarly attention he deserves, and this is the first translation into English of his complete surviving works. The Avenging of Raguidel 'must surely be counted as one of the most fascinating and innovative of the French Gawain romances' - Norris J. Lacy.

Greek Tragedy After the Fifth Century

Vayos,Liapis  著
Ingram 出版
2021/07/13 出版

Did Greek tragedy die along with Euripides? This accessible survey demonstrates that this is far from being the case. In it, thirteen eminent specialists offer, for the first time in English, broad coverage of a little-studied but essential part of the history of Greek tragedy. The book contains in-depth discussions of all available textual evidence (including inscriptions and papyri), but also provides historical perspectives on every aspect of the post-fifth-century history of tragedy. Oft-neglected plays, such as Rhesus, Alexandra, and Exagōgē (the only surviving Biblical tragedy), are studied alongside such topics as the expansion of Greek tragedy beyond Athens, theatre performance, music and dance, society and politics, as well as the reception of Greek tragedy in the Second Sophistic and in Late Antiquity, and the importance of ancient scholarship in the transmission of Greek tragic texts.

Greek Theatre Between Antiquity and Independence

Ingram 出版
2021/07/08 出版

This first general history of Greek theatre from Hellenistic times to the foundation of the Modern Greek state in 1830 marks a radical departure from traditional methods of historiography. We like to think of history unfolding continuously, in an evolutionary form, but the story of Greek theatre is rather different. After traditional theatre ended in the sixth and seventh centuries, no traditional drama was written or performed on stage throughout the Greek-speaking world for centuries due to the Orthodox Church's hostile attitude toward spectacles. With the reinvention of theatre in Renaissance Italy, however, Greek theatre was revived in Crete under Venetian rule in the late sixteenth century. The following centuries saw the restoration of Greek theatre at various locations, albeit characterized by numerous ruptures and discontinuities in terms of geography, stylistics, thematic approaches and ideologies. These diverse developments were only 'normalized' with the establishment of the Greek nation state.

Approaches to Lucretius

Ingram 出版
2021/07/02 出版

Both in antiquity and ever since the Renaissance Lucretius' De Rerum Natura has been admired - and condemned - for its startling poetry, its evangelical faith in materialist causation, and its seductive advocacy of the Epicurean good life. Approaches to Lucretius assembles an international team of classicists and philosophers to take stock of a range of critical approaches to which this influential poem has given rise and which in turn have shaped its interpretation, including textual criticism, the text's strategies for engaging the reader with its author and his message, the 'atomology' that posits a correlation of the letters of the poem with the atoms of the universe, the literary and philosophical intertexts that mediate the poem, and the political and ideological questions that it raises. Thirteen essays take up a variety of positions within these traditions of interpretation, innovating within them and advancing beyond them in new directions.

Ancient Voices Call Again

Ingram 出版
2021/06/25 出版

The ancient philosophers of Greece and Rome knew that life is a great search for the highest expression of Self. They knew that nothing in all the fright and chaos of this world is more important than peace of mind. They knew that the cultivation of virtues and the denial of vices is indispensable to peace. Expressing Stoic and Epicurean traditions, Socrates, Plato, Epictetus, Plutarch, Epicurus, Seneca, Cicero, Marcus Aurelius and others, asked-What kind of person would you be as you walk the earth for a short while? What virtues would you welcome, what vices would you lay aside, what light would you be to others and yourself? What would you teach? What is beauty in this world, for loving beauty is a sign of inner peace? What are the marks of wisdom in true character?Every generation repeats the journey of the ancient folk and masters, but so often, perhaps even now, without their counsel. Sincere, intimate, touching, humorous, stirring, and beautifully crafted are the utterances. A single one can transform your life. This book would have appealed to my dear mother who liked a single thought, with no more than three sentences, on a single page.I have always loved eloquence with brevity, and here it is in spades. There is a reassurance in these pages, a kind of safety, that always accompanies peace of mind.

Lucian, True History

Diskin,Clay  著
2021/05/06 出版

Lucian of Samosata's True History is a fantastical tale of voyage and imagination. No editor, translator, or reader knows quite how to describe it or fit it comfortably into a familiar genre of Greek literature: 'satires' and 'dialogues' only partially describe the genre or genres he wrote in. Of all the ancient Greco-Roman writers, Lucian is without doubt one of the most inventive and witty. The Greek text in this edition of the True History is accompanied by a facing page English translation, making it an accessible and informative resource aimed at students and teachers of Greek. Whether used in the classroom or in research, readers will benefit from an introduction to Lucian and his place in imperial Greek literature, as well as a translation and commentary that bring out the wonders of his True History.

The Best of Homer’s Iliad

Tim J,Young  著
Ingram 出版
2021/04/28 出版

The Best of Homer's Iliad presents the best of Homer's great epic poem in translated and narrative summary form. If you've never read the Iliad, and you don't know how much time you'd like to invest in doing so, then this version of the poem is for you. You'll get the best parts of the epic in translation (about one-half) and a narrative summary of the rest. In addition to the poem, there's an informative introduction exploring "Why We Should Care about Homer," "Basic Facts about Homer," and "The Big Themes and Ideas of the Iliad." After reading the poem, you'll find, "Other Matters of Interest Related to Homer," including "The Cast of Gods and Men," a map of "The Warring Sides of the Trojan War," a day-by-day timeline of the Iliad, a glossary of Homeric Greek terms, and suggestions for further reading. Finally, there is a section offering "Points of Wisdom & Ways of Practice"-a chance to apply and practice Homeric wisdom in your own life. Why should you want to read Homer's Iliad? Go back a few thousand years and Homer's Iliad was a perennial blockbuster. That's because Homer himself was the one everyone turned to for entertainment, education, and inspiration. A scholar once claimed that "if a Greek owned any books-that is, papyrus rolls-he was almost as likely to own the Iliad and the Odyssey as anything from the rest of Greek literature." Homer was Greece's chief educator and coach. He shaped Greek feelings, thoughts, and behavior. Homer is celebrated for the Iliad, a sweeping epic poem that touches on everything that matters most to us humans. There's heroic anger and suffering. There's love, friendship, and enmity. Most of all, there's the mad quest for happiness, for the good and noble life. What now? Strap on your well-fitting greaves, fix your bronze helmet on your head, pick up your shield, spear, and a goatskin of water, and prepare to step into an ancient world that is stirringly wonderful and horrifying in turn. Welcome to Homer's Iliad!

Antigone and Other Tragedies

Sophocles  著
2021/04/27 出版

Sophocles stands as one of the greatest dramatists of all time, and one of the most influential on artists and thinkers over the centuries. His plays are deeply disturbing and unpredictable, unrelenting and open-ended, refusing to present firm answers to the questions of human existence, or to provide a redemptive justification of the ways of gods to men or women. These three tragedies portray the extremes of human suffering and emotion, turning the heroic myths into supreme works of poetry and dramatic action. Antigone's obsession with the dead, Creon's crushing inflexibility, Deianeira's jealous desperation, the injustice of the gods witnessed by Hyllus, Electra's obsessive vindictiveness, the threatening of insoluble dynastic contamination... Such are the pains and distortions and instabilities of Sophoclean tragedy. And yet they do not deteriorate into cacophony or disgust or incoherence or silence: they face the music, and through that the suffering is itself turned into the coherence of music and poetry. These original and distinctive verse translations convey the vitality of Sophocles' poetry and the vigour of the plays in performance, doing justice to both the sound of the poetry and the theatricality of the tragedies. Each play is accompanied by an introduction and substantial notes on topographical and mythical references and interpretation.

Decimus Laberius

Ingram 出版
2021/04/19 出版

This is a newly revised, critical text of the fragments attributed to the Roman knight and mimographer Decimus Laberius, a witty and crudely satirical contemporary of Cicero and Caesar. Laberius is perhaps the most celebrated comic playwright of the late Republic, and the fragments of plays attributed to him comprise the overwhelming majority of the extant evidence for what we conventionally call 'the literary Roman mime'. The volume also includes a survey of the characteristics and development of the Roman mime, both as a literary genre and as a type of popular theatrical entertainment, as well as a re-evaluation of the place of Laberius' work within its historical and literary context. This is the first English translation of all the fragments, and the first detailed English commentary on them from a linguistic, metrical, and (wherever possible) theatrical perspective.

The Fall of Cities in the Mediterranean

Ingram 出版
2021/04/19 出版

A body of theory has developed about the role and function of memory in creating and maintaining cultural identity. Yet there has been no consideration of the rich Mediterranean and Near Eastern traditions of laments for fallen cities in commemorating or resolving communal trauma. This volume offers new insights into the trope of the fallen city in folk-song and a variety of literary genres. These commemorations reveal memories modified by diverse agendas, and contains narrative structures and motifs that show the meaning of memory-making about fallen cities. Opening a new avenue of research into the Mediterranean genre of city lament, this book examines references to, or re-workings of, otherwise lost texts or ways of commemorating fallen cities in the extant texts, and with greater emphasis than usual on the point of view of the victors.

Conington’s Virgil: Aeneid I - II

J,Conington  著
2021/04/13 出版

John Conington's three-volume edition of The Works of Virgil, begun in 1852, has long been unavailable except in rare second-hand sets. The whole work is now being reissued in six affordable paperbacks, with new introductions setting the commentary in its context. Well into the twentieth century Conington's Virgil remained the sine qua non for school and undergraduate students and their teachers; Conington's commentary is remarkably close and uncompromising in its engagement with the detail of Virgil's Latin, as well as its literary sensitivity; it still has much to offer the modern reader. This volume includes Conington's general introduction to Virgil, his introduction to the Aeneid, his introduction to Books I -VI, Virgil's text and Conington's commentary to Books I-II. It also includes Philip Hardie's general assessment of Conington, along with Anne Rogerson's introduction to Conington's Aeneid.

The Medieval Classic

Ingram 出版
2021/04/06 出版

The Medieval Classic considers how ancient and medieval commentaries on the Aeneid by Servius, Fulgentius, Bernard Silvestris, and others can give us new insights into four twelfth-century Latin epics -- the Ylias by Joseph of Exeter, the Alexandreis by Walter of Ch璽tillon, the Anticlaudianus by Alan of Lille, and the Architrenius by John of Hauville. Justin Haynes argues that the most profound connections between medieval epic and the Aeneid have been overlooked because ancient and medieval interpretations, as preserved by the commentary tradition, were often radically different from modern ones. By explaining how to interpret the Aeneid, these commentaries directly influenced the way in which medieval authors were inspired by the poem. At the same time, these commentaries allow us a greater awareness of the generic expectations held by medieval readers. Because two of the medieval epics considered here are allegorical narratives, this book offers new perspectives on the importance of commentaries in the development of allegorical literature. Thus, The Medieval Classic contributes to our understanding of ancient and medieval perceptions of the Aeneid while exploring the importance of commentaries in shaping poetic composition, imitation, and the history of allegorical literature.

The Best of Epicurus

Classics Cave 出版
2021/03/28 出版

THE BEST OF EPICURUS presents Epicurus' own writings and teachings, as well as much of what remains about his life and philosophy from antiquity. It begins with an informative introduction, which, aside from explaining why we should care about Epicurus and the basic facts we should know about him, delves deeply into the big themes and ideas of his philosophy and way of life. THE BEST OF EPICURUS ends with a twelve-point Epicurean "Plan of Life," "Points of Wisdom from Epicurus," and three workbook or journal-style exercises for practice, along with "Other Matters of Interest Related to Epicurus," including a cast of significant ancient Epicureans, two maps, summaries of his major works, a glossary of pertinent Greek terms, and suggestions for further reading. CONTRARY TO WHAT the modern term "epicurean" implies, ancient Greek Epicureanism was anything but "fond of indulgence and devoted to sensual enjoyment." In this modern sense, Epicurus himself (c. 341-271 BC) was no "epicure." Rather, fan of a simple diet of barley cakes and water, he boasted that if he had these, he could compete with Zeus himself in terms of bliss. It has been said that Epicurus' "manner of life was much more like that of an abstemious monk." It's true. Epicurus proposed a deliberate way of life that would help men and women live well and be happy. The Epicurean path influenced countless individuals in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds for nearly a millennium. It is The Classics Cave's hope that we may still benefit from Epicurus and his wisdom today. WHAT IS THE Epicurean way of life? It is one centered on knowing well in order to live well. That-living well and being happy-is the goal. The means of achieving the goal are fairly straightforward however hard to practice. They are seeking wisdom. Sticking with the facts of reality. Desiring well. Enduring pain (if need be). Striving for self-sufficiency. Living simply. Cultivating the virtues. Nurturing friendship. With these, the long night of dread and anxiety begins to transition as the bright sun of tranquility appears. IF YOU ARE new to Epicurus and Epicureanism, you will come away fully understanding what this school of philosophy and way of life was all about. If you are already familiar with the school, we hope THE BEST OF EPICURUS will shed new light on what you know. If nothing else, you'll see how Epicurus and his philosophy are still relevant today.

Law and Love in Ovid

Ingram 出版
2021/03/24 出版

In classical scholarship, the presence of legal language in love poetry is commonly interpreted as absurd and incongruous. Ovid's legalisms have been described as frivolous, humorous, and ornamental. Law and Love in Ovid challenges this wide-spread, but ill-informed view. Legal discourse in Latin love poetry is not incidental, but fundamental. Inspired by recent work in the interdisciplinary field of law and literature, Ioannis Ziogas argues that the Roman elegiac poets point to love as the site of law's emergence. The Latin elegiac poets may say 'make love, not law', but in order to make love, they have to make law. Drawing on Agamben, Foucault, and Butler, Law and Love in Ovid explores the juridico-discursive nature of Ovid's love poetry, constructions of sovereignty, imperialism, authority, biopolitics, and the ways in which poetic diction has the force of law. The book is methodologically ambitious, combining legal theory with historically informed closed readings of numerous primary sources. Ziogas aims to restore Ovid to his rightful position in the history of legal humanism. The Roman poet draws on a long tradition that goes back to Hesiod and Solon, in which poetic justice is pitted against corrupt rulers. Ovid's amatory jurisprudence is examined vis-?-vis Paul's letter to the Romans. The juridical nature of Ovid's poetry lies at the heart of his reception in the Middle Ages, from Boccaccio's Decameron to Forcadel's Cupido iurisperitus. The current trend to simultaneously study and marginalize legal discourse in Ovid is a modern construction that Law and Love in Ovid aims to demolish.

Ingram 出版
2021/01/19 出版

Together with sacrifice, prayer, and libation, offering dedications was a basic religious activity among ancient Greeks. By the end of the Archaic period (c. 480 B.C.), sanctuaries were bursting with dedications, including finer ones such as statues bearing epigrams. Scholarly treatments have focused on formal matters and, more recently, the function of dedications as social display. This is the first study to view dedications comprehensively as sites of ritual efficacy and, especially, to recover epigram's reflections of and contributions to that efficacy and restore it to an important place in the panorama of Greek religious practice. To reconstruct the Archaic experience of reading and viewing, the book draws on studies of traditional poetic language as resonant with immanent meaning, early Greek poetry as socially and religiously effective performance, and viewing art as an active response of aesthetic appreciation.

Rethinking the Gods

Ingram 出版
2021/01/19 出版

Ancient philosophers had always been fascinated by religion. From the first century BC onwards, the traditionally more hostile attitude of Greek and Roman philosophy was abandoned in favour of the view that religion was a source of philosophical knowledge. This book studies that change, not from the perspective of the history of religion, as is usual, but understands it as part of the wider tendency of Post-Hellenistic philosophy to open up to external, non-philosophical sources of knowledge and authority. It situates two key themes, ancient wisdom and cosmic hierarchy, in the context of Post-Hellenistic philosophy and traces their reconfigurations in contemporary literature and in the polemic between Jews, Christians and pagans. Overall, Post-Hellenistic philosophy can be seen to have a relatively high degree of unity in its ideas on religion, which should not be reduced to a preparation for Neo-Platonism.

Hellenistic Epigrams

Ingram 出版
2021/01/01 出版

Greek 'literary' epigrams constitute one of the most versatile and dynamic poetic forms in the Hellenistic period. Originally modeled on the anonymous epitaphs and dedications inscribed on monuments throughout antiquity, these short poems came to include a variety of subtypes and served as a vehicle for Hellenistic poets to experiment with themes and motifs from other genres. This edition introduces students to a wide selection of epigrams from the third and second centuries BCE. It provides substantial help in construing the Greek and will be appropriate for those approaching the genre for the first time, whilst also containing material of interest to scholars. It includes work by the most important epigrammatists of this period, with substantial attention paid to the way these poets engage with the epigraphic and literary traditions. The Introduction provides an overview of the history of the genre and of its formal features, including dialect and meter.

From Hittite to Homer

Ingram 出版
2020/12/10 出版

This book provides a groundbreaking reassessment of the prehistory of Homeric epic. It argues that in the Early Iron Age bilingual poets transmitted to the Greeks a set of narrative traditions closely related to the one found at Bronze-Age Hattusa, the Hittite capital. Key drivers for Near Eastern influence on the developing Homeric tradition were the shared practices of supralocal festivals and venerating divinized ancestors, and a shared interest in creating narratives about a legendary past using a few specific storylines: theogonies, genealogies connecting local polities, long-distance travel, destruction of a famous city because it refuses to release captives, and trying to overcome death when confronted with the loss of a dear companion. Professor Bachvarova concludes by providing a fresh explanation of the origins and significance of the Greco-Anatolian legend of Troy, thereby offering a new solution to the long-debated question of the historicity of the Trojan War.

The Sublime in Antiquity

Ingram 出版
2020/12/10 出版

Current understandings of the sublime are focused by a single word ('sublimity') and by a single author ('Longinus'). The sublime is not a word: it is a concept and an experience, or rather a whole range of ideas, meanings and experiences that are embedded in conceptual and experiential patterns. Once we train our sights on these patterns a radically different prospect on the sublime in antiquity comes to light, one that touches everything from its range of expressions to its dates of emergence, evolution, role in the cultures of antiquity as a whole, and later reception. This book is the first to outline an alternative account of the sublime in Greek and Roman poetry, philosophy, and the sciences, in addition to rhetoric and literary criticism. It offers new readings of Longinus without privileging him, but instead situates him within a much larger context of reflection on the sublime in antiquity.

Ovid: A Very Short Introduction

Ingram 出版
2020/12/01 出版

"Vivam" is the very last word of Ovid's masterpiece, the Metamorphoses: "I shall live." If we're still reading it two millennia after Ovid's death, this is by definition a remarkably accurate prophecy. Ovid was not the only ancient author with aspirations to be read for eternity, but no poet of the Greco-Roman world has had a deeper or more lasting impact on subsequent literature and art than he can claim. In the present day no Greek or Roman poet is as accessible, to artists, writers, or the general reader: Ovid's voice remains a compellingly contemporary one, as modern as it seemed to his contemporaries in Augustan Rome. But Ovid was also a man of his time, his own story fatally entwined with that of the first emperor Augustus, and the poetry he wrote channels in its own way the cultural and political upheavals of the contemporary city, its public life, sexual mores, religion, and urban landscape, while also exploiting the superbly rich store of poetic convention that Greek literature and his Roman predecessors had bequeathed to him. This Very Short Introduction explains Ovid's background, social and literary, and introduces his poetry, on love, metamorphosis, Roman festivals, and his own exile, a restlessly innovative oeuvre driven by the irrepressible ingenium or wit for which he was famous. Llewelyn Morgan also explores Ovid's immense influence on later literature and art, spanning from Shakespeare to Bernini. Throughout, Ovid's poetry is revealed as enduringly scintillating, his personal story compelling, and the issues his life and poetry raise of continuing relevance and interest. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

The Nicomachean Ethics is widely considered one of the most important philosophical works of Western Philosophy. The theme of the work is a Socratic question previously explored in the works of Plato, Aristotle's friend and teacher, of how men should best live. The Nicomachean Ethics had a crucial impact upon the European Middle Ages, becoming one of the core works of medieval philosophy. It therefore indirectly became critical in the development of all modern philosophy as well as European law and theology.

Sophocles: Antigone and Other Tragedies

Ingram 出版
2020/11/01 出版

Sophocles stands as one of the greatest dramatists of all time, and one of the most influential on artists and thinkers over the centuries. His plays are deeply disturbing and unpredictable, unrelenting and open-ended, refusing to present firm answers to the questions of human existence, or to provide a redemptive justification of the ways of gods to men-or women. Antigone is an icon of Greek tragedy, and Antigone is herself a tragic icon in world theatre. Sophocles' best-known and most performed play tells a story of defiance and the impossible demands of loyalty. Deianeira, also known as Women of Trachis or Trachinaian Women, wrestles with the anxieties of matrimony and motherhood, following the doomed attempt by the wife of the hero Heracles to assert her dignity. Electra portrays a vengeful daughter's journey through unflagging grief and murderous fury, ending without resolution in uncertainty and suspense.

Chronicle of the Logothete

Ingram 出版
2020/11/01 出版

The Chronicle of the Logothete covers the period from the Creation of the World to the burial of emperor Romanos I Lekapenos in the summer of 948 AD. If we deduce a medieval text's importance and success from the number of extant manuscripts, this work must score highly. While some medieval chronicles have come down to us in only one manuscript, about thirty manuscripts transmit the Chronicle of the Logothete in its main form, and there are also manuscripts containing different kinds of elaborated versions of the text. Also, the chronicle was translated into Old Slavonic at least twice. In spite of the work's popularity, the chronicler himself remains obscure. It has been suggested that this could be Symeon Metaphrastes, an illustrious Byzantine literate who collected and edited, or wrote, Saints' Lives. However, fairly certain is only that the final compilation of the text was made in the second half of the tenth century, and there seems to be a pro-Lekapenian bias and an antipathy towards the Macedonian dynasty. This volume is based on the translator's 2006 edition of the text and constitutes the first translation ever into English.

The Best of Basil the Great on Reading Literature and Education

Ingram 出版
2020/10/04 出版

How should we engage with literature? Many today would tell us to "Just read"-as if that were enough, as if the act of reading in itself accomplishes some good. It increases vocabulary, they would say. It builds cultural literacy. And if nothing else, it exercises the brain, connecting one synapse to another. "Not so fast!" Basil the Great would protest. It's all true, what they say. But if we collect all the vocabulary in the world, and become culturally literate superstars, and grow mega brains, and yet we lose our souls, what will have we ultimately gained? Far better, he would counsel, if we read with discrimination and with a clear goal in mind. Far better if we focus on what is truly valuable in order to nourish our souls and become better men and women. Far better if we read in order to act-to do and be well. In THE BEST OF BASIL THE GREAT ON READING LITERATURE AND EDUCATION, Basil explains how we may do this, how we may read well, carrying on a tradition of critique and counsel that may be traced back to Plato, if not before. Basil's guidance influenced countless educators and readers in the centuries to come. Writing mid-twentieth century, the scholar of Greek education Werner Jaeger judged that his "famous oration on the study of Greek literature and poetry . . . was the charter of all Christian higher education for centuries to come." We may justly expand Jaeger's conclusion to read simply all higher education.

Osbern Bokenham

2020/10/01 出版

This is the first edition of a major work by the translator and hagiographer Osbern Bokenham. Unknown before the discovery of the unique manuscript in 2005, Bokenham's work comprises a complete translation of Legenda Aurea, a collection of saints' lives compiled by the Dominican friar Jacobus de Voragine which achieved widespread popularity throughout the Middle Ages and survives in over eight hundred manuscripts, supplemented with accounts of the lives of various British saints, including those of Cedde, Felix, Edward, and Oswald. Writing in the fifteenth century, Bokenham's work, which combines prose and verse, was influenced by major writers such as Chaucer and Lydgate, both in its content and in its verse forms and style, and thus sheds new light on their fifteenth-century reputation. Bokenham's work is also important for his naming of the patrons for whom he translated a number of these saints' lives, allowing scholars to trace networks of patronage amongst prominent members of the gentry and nobility in fifteenth-century East Anglia.

Plagiarism in Latin Literature

Scott,McGill  著
Ingram 出版
2020/09/21 出版

In response to critics who charged him with plagiarism, Virgil is said to have responded that it was easier to steal Hercules' club than a line from Homer. This was to deny the allegations by implying that Virgil was no plagiarist at all, but an author who had done the hard work of making Homer's material his own. Several other texts and passages in Latin literature provide further evidence for accusations and denials of plagiarism. Plagiarism in Latin Literature explores important questions such as, how do Roman writers and speakers define the practice? And how do the accusations and denials function? Scott McGill moves between varied sources, including Terence, Martial, Seneca the Elder and Macrobius' Virgil criticism to explore these questions. In the process, he offers new insights into the history of plagiarism and related issues, including Roman notions of literary property, authorship and textual reuse.

Tales of Fishes

Zane,Grey  著
2020/09/10 出版

This was a well written description of ocean fishing. The writer's fish stories describe the mental and physical demands of trying to land the largest and most numerous catches of swordfish, marlin, tuna and several other species of deep water fish. Imagine listening to story after story of fighting a three hundred pound fish for several hours only to have it break the line as it was being brought in. If you are a deep sea fisherman you might enjoy page after page of essentially the same thing. It was quite a departure from the typical stories of the old west. Maybe he wanted to do something different. The book does end with an essay on the importance of being environmentally conscious as one fishes the oceans. Even in 1918 when this was written there were indications that some species were becoming overfished and were in danger of disappearing altogether. (Gerald Matzke)

The Battle of the Classics

Eric,Adler  著
2020/09/01 出版

These are troubling days for the humanities. In response, a recent proliferation of works defending the humanities has emerged. But, taken together, what are these works really saying, and how persuasive do they prove? The Battle of the Classics demonstrates the crucial downsides of contemporary apologetics for the humanities and presents in its place a historically informed case for a different approach to rescuing the humanistic disciplines in higher education. It reopens the passionate debates about the classics that took place in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America as a springboard for crafting a novel foundation for the humanistic tradition. Eric Adler demonstrates that current defenses of the humanities rely on the humanistic disciplines as inculcators of certain poorly defined skills such as "critical thinking." It criticizes this conventional approach, contending that humanists cannot hope to save their disciplines without arguing in favor of particular humanities content. As the uninspired defenses of the classical humanities in the late nineteenth century prove, instrumental apologetics are bound to fail. All the same, the book shows that proponents of the Great Books favor a curriculum that is too intellectually narrow for the twenty-first century. The Battle of the Classics thus lays out a substance-based approach to undergraduate education that will revive the humanities, even as it steers clear of overreliance on the Western canon. The book envisions a global humanities based on the examination of masterworks from manifold cultures as the heart of an intellectually and morally sound education.
