Guerrilla Bible Studies, Volume 4, Following Jesus
The New Testament tells the story of God's sending of his Son, Jesus of Nazareth, who launches a nonviolent liberation movement we are each recruited to join. Jesus proclaimed the Kingdom of God, on earth as in heaven. He taught and demonstrated a kingdom "not of this world," empowering his disciples with the Holy Spirit to do the same. This volume of Guerrilla Bible Studies, Following Jesus: On Earth as in Heaven is fourth in a series of 52 discipleship Bible studies that follow Guerrilla Gospel: Reading the Bible for Liberation in the Power of the Spirit. In this collection you will find practical guidelines for facilitating liberating Bible studies that mobilize people. These thirteen Bible studies have been tried-and-tested in jails, rural communities in the global South, frontline North American and European missional settings, and in graduate-level theology schools. Each study focuses on how Jesus demonstrated, taught and recruited disciples into his non-violent mission movement. Each study is laid for easy use by Bible study facilitators, including questions, suggestions for guiding the study, explanations, background information about the texts, and invitations and calls to action for the participants.
Metonymy
METONYMY: from the daybooks.Drawn from thousands of notations, and observations this slim volume is part memoir, part unconventional prose poem. A shared and hopefully provocative experience.Although it appears to be a homage to the random, it is actually the opposite: Intellect embraces chaos and produces change.

A Critical Examination of the Belief in a Life After Death
Ducasse was born in Angoul礙me, France. He obtained A.B. and A.M. degrees in philosophy from the University of Washington. In 1912, he obtained his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He is most notable for his work in the philosophy of mind and aesthetics. His influence can be seen in the work of Roderick Chisholm and Wilfrid Sellars. Ducasse was president of the Eastern division of the American Philosophical Association (1939-40) and the Philosophy of Science Association president.Ducasse wrote on parapsychology. He joined the American Society for Psychical Research in 1951 and served a term as vice president beginning in 1966.His book, A Critical Examination of the Belief in a Life After Death, is a philosophical attempt to examine the idea of life after death. In it, he expressed his belief in survival. Parapsychologists praised the book. Criticism came from philosopher Corliss Lamont, who asserted that some of the content was based on wishful thinking.Ducasse was a believer in reincarnation. Science writer Martin Gardner observed that Ducasse was notable for "combining nonbelief in God with a belief in the preexistence and the afterlife of human souls."
Sappho and Phaon
"Sappho and Phaon" by Mary Robinson is a poignant sonnet sequence that breathes life into the legendary tale of the ancient poetess Sappho's tragic love. Robinson, known as 'the English Sappho, ' was a pioneering female author and feminist trailblazer with a dramatic life story. Abandoned by her father at a young age, she turned to teaching and acting, capturing the heart of the Prince of Wales before transforming into a respected writer. In this work, Robinson reimagines Sappho not as the iconic figure of later centuries, but as the Renaissance had often portrayed her: a tortured lover, hopelessly enamored with Phaon, a boatman. Her pursuit of Phaon to Sicily and her eventual leap from the Leucadian cliffs symbolize a profound narrative of passionate love and despair. The tale likely resonated deeply with Robinson's own experiences of love and rejection.Robinson's Sappho diverges from historical accuracies, focusing instead on the emotional depth and human complexities of her characters. This sonnet sequence stands as a testament to Robinson's literary talent and her ability to weave personal anguish into timeless art. "Sappho and Phaon" invites readers to experience a moving portrayal of love, loss, and the enduring power of poetry.
Srimad-Bhagavad-Gita
The "Srimad-Bhagavad-Gita," translated and commented on by Swami Swarupananda, is an early 20th-century rendition of the sacred Hindu scripture into modern, readable English prose. This translation remains faithful to the original, ensuring that the line numbering aligns closely with the Sanskrit text. While the original book includes the Sanskrit text, this edition focuses solely on the English translation.Swami Swarupananda's work is particularly suitable for those exploring the Bhagavad Gita for the first time. It offers a word-for-word English rendering, making it accessible to a wide audience. The translation's clarity and contemporary language not only convey the profound inner meaning of this ancient Indian scripture but also make it easily understandable for beginners. This version of the Bhagavad Gita serves as an essential guide to one of the world's most revered spiritual texts, providing insights into the philosophical and spiritual richness of Indian culture.
The Philosophy of Natural Magic
"The Philosophy of Natural Magic" by Henry Cornelius Agrippa, a seminal work in the field of esoteric philosophy, offers a captivating glimpse into the mystical practices and beliefs of the Renaissance era. First published in the early 16th century as "De occulta philosophia libri tres," this book proposes a compelling view of magic as a divine science, accessible to devout Christians and derived from God, rather than the Devil. Agrippa's profound influence on Renaissance thinkers, especially Giordano Bruno, is a testament to his revolutionary ideas. This early 20th-century edition brings Agrippa's work to the modern reader without the complexity of Elizabethan typography and spelling, preserving just enough to provide an authentic flavor of the original text. This book serves as a fascinating introduction to the world of natural magic and its philosophical underpinnings.
The Divine Verdict
The Divine Verdict Numerous articles, radio reflections, and books would continue to be produced by Sheen throughout the war. Given their importance and the impact they had on society in his day, it seemed appropriate to bring together once again some of Archbishop Sheen's reflections on war and peace taken from his book The Divine Verdict (New York: P.J. Kenedy and Sons, 1943)Here you will a collection of Sheen's Catholic Hour radio addresses that were heard by millions of listeners each week. These reflections are a series of short essays that addressed the many concerns of the listeners of his day during the war. Sheen answers questions about the moral basis of peace, the power of God, war being a judgement of God and the judgement of nations. Sheen also explains how evil Has Its Hour and how our freedoms are in danger. His were some of the most clearly delineated investigations into the underlying causes of the war combined with an entirely sound and hopeful program for winning both the war and the even more important peace are found in them. These powerful reflections can be most heartily recommended for their wise counsel, sane and penetrating analysis, and logical conclusions.Sheen writes, "There are two ways of looking at the war: one as a journalist, the other as a theologian. The journalist tells you what happens; the theologian not only why it happens, but also what matters. Our approach is from the divine point of view, first of all, because it is the only explanation which fits the facts; secondly, because the American people who have been confused by catchwords and slogans are seeking an inspiration for a total surrender of their great potentialities for sacrifice, both for God and country."Sheen is firm in his conviction that real peace cannot be declared, it must be made. It is with peace-making and the fundamental conditions on which peace must be based that this book is concerned. In its seven forceful and readable chapters, it challenges the theory of many planners today who posture that military allies are necessarily political allies; it affirms that a common hatred can make nations allies, but only a common love can make them neighbors; it denies the primacy of action over reason, in the sense that the will of the state is that which makes a state right; and it contends that utility does not establish justice, but it is justice which makes utility. With the same lucid and persuasive reasoning that has made him outstanding both as a writer and as a lecturer, Sheen continues to challenge people of goodwill to unite for the preservation of personal rights, freedom of conscience, human justice, and civilization itself - all of which are in danger in the present conflict. Here, one will recognize the urgency of Sheen's subject matter, and will find pillars of peace and promise in his far-sighted principles.Table of ContentsINTRODUCTIONEVIL HAS ITS HOURWAR AS A JUDGMENT OF GODJUDGMENT OF NATIONSFREEDOM IN DANGERMORAL BASIS OF PEACEJEW AND CHRISTIANTHE POWER OF GOD
How to Live on 24 Hours a Day
"If you have time you can obtain money- usually. But... you cannot buy yourself a minute more time than I have." You have to live on twenty-four hours of daily time. Out of it you have to spin health, pleasure, money, content, respect, and the evolution of your immortal soul. This timeless classic is one of the first self-help books ever written and was a best-seller in both England and America. It remains as useful today as when it was written, and offers fresh and practical advice on how to make the most of the daily miracle of life. Time, not money, is what matters. The core idea is that, as individuals, we focus on budgeting money, but not time, although the latter is more precious. Manage your time and achieve your best self.
The Itching Palm
Fed up of walking around like a money sieve, draining money everywhere you go because of the constant pressure to tip? Take a taxi? Tip. Hotel porter? Tip. Baggageman? Tip. Bellboy? Tip. Elevator boy? Tip. Hatboy? Tip. Lunch? Tip. Room service? Tip. Uber? Tip. Parking attendant? Tip. And as if this were not enough, we have now reached the point where even self-checkout machines are robotically prompting customers to tip. The custom is ubiquitous. It is also not optional in practice, even though it is in theory. Woe to the customer who tips poorly! As to those who defiantly refuse to tip? They might as well be dead, for they will never be served again. And in some cases their order will be vandalised by irate workers. In The Itching Palm, first published in 1916, William R. Scott demonstrates that complaints about the evils of this custom go a long way back. Aside from its pervasiveness, he details the devious (and humorous) psychological tactics used to extract tips from customers, both in America and Europe; the role of etiquette literature; the huge boost in profits it brings to employers; and the specious arguments used by said employers to justify shifting the majority-if not all- of the staff payroll onto the customer. Additionally, he surveys the various legislative efforts to eradicate the custom and the reasons they failed, as well as the opposition of labour leaders and their motivations. Ultimately, he argues that the custom is unethical, an affront to human dignity, and incompatible with a democratic society. As expected tip percentages have doubled since its initial publication, this text is twice as relevant today as it was a hundred years ago.

A Room with a View (Annoted)
A Room with a View by E.M. Forster is a novel that weaves together themes of love, social conventions, and self-discovery. Set in the early 20th century, the story follows the journey of the protagonist, Lucy Honeychurch, as she grapples with the expectations of society and her own desires. The narrative begins with Lucy's journey to Italy accompanied by her older cousin and chaperone, Charlotte Bartlett. They stay at the Pension Bertolini in Florence, where they encounter the unconventional and forward-thinking Mr. Emerson and his son, George. The Emersons offer to exchange rooms with Lucy and Charlotte, providing them with a "room with a view" of the beautiful city. In this new environment, Lucy's perspective on life begins to shift. The novel explores the stark contrast between the repressive Edwardian society of England and the liberating atmosphere of Italy. Lucy is exposed to the sensuality and passion of the Italian landscape, and this experience starts to challenge her adherence to societal norms. Back in England, Lucy becomes engaged to Cecil Vyse, a sophisticated but pretentious man who embodies the values of the English upper class. However, her engagement is threatened when George Emerson re-enters her life. The story unfolds as Lucy grapples with her feelings for George, the expectations of her family and society, and her own journey toward self-discovery. The novel is a comedy of manners that satirizes the Edwardian social structure and its rigidity. As Lucy navigates the complexities of love and societal expectations, Forster explores themes of authenticity, individual freedom, and the clash between the external facade and internal desires. The turning point in the story occurs during a visit to the country estate of Cecil's mother, where a chance encounter with George leads to a kiss. This moment becomes a catalyst for Lucy's self-realization and prompts her to reassess her values and priorities. In the resolution of the novel, Lucy breaks off her engagement to Cecil and follows her heart, choosing to be with George despite the social consequences. The story concludes with the couple on their honeymoon in Italy, symbolizing the triumph of personal fulfillment over societal expectations. A Room with a View is not only a love story but also a social commentary that challenges the conventions of Edwardian England. Forster's exploration of the clash between the individual and society, coupled with his wit and keen observation of human nature, has solidified the novel's place as a classic in English literature.
Vignettes
Josip Novakovich's Vignettes offers a wide-ranging look at his life, including his youth in hometown Daruvar, Croatia, where he attended school in a castle on a hill with barrels of whites and reds stored in the basement, "my peers and I learned the basics of math, grammar, history, and literature, somewhat dizzy and fumigated in wine vapors that seeped upward through the oiled oak floors."Over the course of seventeen short stories, Novakovich traces his relationship with wine: "Wine may have a lot to do with my interest in literature, or it may be the other way around-I am not sure which came first, those vapors, or the stories involving wine? And so, a bit of wine, in a small glass, a bit of truth, in a few lines."

The Lailashi Codex
Lailashi, a remote village at the footstool of the Caucasian mountains holds one of the most tantalising and valuable discoveries in biblical scholarship and Jewish history. It is the home of the Lailashi Codex, the greatest nearly complete ancient Masoretic Pentateuch adorned with exquisite micrographic designs and calligrams. It belongs to the exclusive group of the Hebrew biblical manuscripts known as Vavei Ha'Amudim (words beginning with the letter vav are the first words on each leaf of the manuscript except for the six cases defined by the scribal tradition). The provenance of the Lailashi Codex and its journey throughout centuries is as mysterious as its authorship and ownership. The leaves of this exceptional Hebrew manuscript are split between Georgia and Israel. This book presents, for the first time, the fascinating history and content of the Lailashi Codex, tracing its turbulent journey replete with mysteries, imprisonments, executions, inaccurate references, conflicting records, unsubstantiated claims, possessions and re-possessions, controversies, and miracles, and ending with a most surprising discovery and the hope of addressing issues related to the cultural memory of this exquisite artefact.

A bridge, a toilet, a flag, a burning pot of lumpia - familiar objects, when handled by Pe簽aranda's deft storytelling, conjure feelings of loss, heartbreak, the search for our roots, our selves, and for home. -Tina Bobadilla- Mastel, Master Teacher, mentor, educator all her adult life to several generations of students and citizens, James Logan High School, Union City."There are extremely few people in the world who think and move with equal levels of sensibilty, grace, intellectual agility, and accuracy in two distinct and often conflicting cultures. Oscar Pe簽aranda is such a person - truly and deeply bicultural - all and at once Filipino and American. His writings present the truest of truths, envisioned through a lens molded from an amalgam of knowledge of literature in English, Filipino, Cebuano, and Waray and polished with the fine-grains of decades of personal adventures and experience as an educator and mentor.
