A Critical Examination of the Belief in a Life After Death
Ducasse was born in Angoul礙me, France. He obtained A.B. and A.M. degrees in philosophy from the University of Washington. In 1912, he obtained his Ph.D. from Harvard University.He is most notable for his work in the philosophy of mind and aesthetics. His influence can be seen in the work of Roderick Chisholm and Wilfrid Sellars. Ducasse was president of the Eastern division of the American Philosophical Association (1939-40) and the Philosophy of Science Association president.Ducasse wrote on parapsychology. He joined the American Society for Psychical Research in 1951 and served a term as vice president beginning in 1966.His book, A Critical Examination of the Belief in a Life After Death, is a philosophical attempt to examine the idea of life after death. In it, he expressed his belief in survival. Parapsychologists praised the book. Criticism came from philosopher Corliss Lamont, who asserted that some of the content was based on wishful thinking.Ducasse was a believer in reincarnation. Science writer Martin Gardner observed that Ducasse was notable for "combining nonbelief in God with a belief in the preexistence and the afterlife of human souls."

It is also not optional in practice, even though it is in theory. Woe to the customer who tips poorly! As to those who defiantly refuse to tip? They might as well be dead, for they will never be served again. And in some cases their order will be vandalised by irate workers. In The Itching Palm, first published in 1916, William R. Scott demonstrates that complaints about the evils of this custom go a long way back. Aside from its pervasiveness, he details the devious (and humorous) psychological tactics used to extract tips from customers, both in America and Europe; the role of etiquette literature; the huge boost in profits it brings to employers; and the specious arguments used by said employers to justify shifting the majority-if not all- of the staff payroll onto the customer. Additionally, he surveys the various legislative efforts to eradicate the custom and the reasons they failed, as well as the opposition of labour leaders and their motivations. Ultimately, he argues that the custom is unethical, an affront to human dignity, and incompatible with a democratic society. As expected tip percentages have doubled since its initial publication, this text is twice as relevant today as it was a hundred years ago.

Lailashi, a remote village at the footstool of the Caucasian mountains holds one of the most tantalising and valuable discoveries in biblical scholarship and Jewish history. Lailashi, a remote village at the footstool of the Caucasian mountains holds one of the most tantalising and valuable discoveries in biblical scholarship and Jewish history. It is the home of the Lailashi Codex, the greatest nearly complete ancient Masoretic Pentateuch adorned with exquisite micrographic designs and calligrams. It belongs to the exclusive group of the Hebrew biblical manuscripts known as Vavei Ha'Amudim (words beginning with the letter vav are the first words on each leaf of the manuscript except for the six cases defined by the scribal tradition). The provenance of the Lailashi Codex and its journey throughout centuries is as mysterious as its authorship and ownership. The leaves of this exceptional Hebrew manuscript are split between Georgia and Israel.
