When a Woman Tells the Truth
Women over 80 have done and are doing important, beautiful, and amazing things. The idea for this book came about as friends sat around talking about what it meant to be turning 80, wondering what other women felt, what their lives were like. A couple of us had the idea of collecting accounts and putting together a book. So off went calls for submissions in various literary sources, and we were amazed at the response. Women in their 80s and 90s from all over the country and abroad sent us stories about their joys, sorrows, adventures, love lives, losses, memories, and their aches and pains. There was sadness. There was humor. There was advice. There was so much! And we received artwork as well, some of which is included.The title, When A Woman Tells the Truth, is part of a quote by the writer Adrienne Rich. The full sentence is "When a woman tells the truth she is creating the possibility for more truth around her." It is in her landmark book On Lies, Secrets, and Silence, published by W.W. Norton & Co., 1979.

Out of the blue, he told the audience of members of a local rotary international club that "if I should wear yellow lenses and see things yellow, I do not owe anyone any apology for what I am about to say". Because yellow has always been his favorite color.There is a Chinese saying Yellow generates Yin and Yang and that implies that yellow is the center of everything in his Chinese tradition and culture.The Yellow River is the cradle of Chinese civilization. Yellow was the emperor's color in Imperial China. Yellow often decorates royal palaces, altars and temples, and the color was used in the dragon robes and attire of the emperors. Yellow also represents freedom from worldly cares and is thus esteemed in Buddhism. Monks' garments are yellow, as are elements of Buddhist temples. Yellow is also symbolic of heroism. Yellow is an important part of his culture, growing up Chinese. The Gospel According to St. John
M.F. Sadler was an Anglican priest. He served as rector of Honiton, England, and wrote several other commentaries, including volumes on each of the four Gospels. SADLER, MICHAEL FERREBEE (1819-1895), theologian, eldest son of Michael Thomas Sadler [q. v.], was born at Leeds in 1819. Educated at Sherborne school, he entered St. John's College, Cambridge, after a short interval of business life. He was elected Tyrwhitt's Hebrew scholar in 1846, and graduated B.A. 1847. He was vicar of Bridgwater from 1857 to 1864 (during which time he was appointed to the prebend of Combe, 13th in Wells Cathedral), and of St. Paul's, Bedford, from 1864 to 1869; he was rector of Honiton from 1869 till his death. In 1869 he received an offer of the bishopric of Montreal, carrying with it the dignity of metropolitan of Canada, but refused it on medical advice. He was a voluminous writer on theological subjects, and a strong high churchman. His works, which had a large circulation, did much to popularise the tractarian doctrines.

DARLENE'S AWAKENING is the story of a younger, adult, Negro Female as she evolved from a sheltered, na簿ve and inexperienced person in the 1950s. The repetitive life experiences in the familiar environment she had grown accustomed to were accepted without question. In a remote area of her unraveling, she was aware there was more in store for her than what seemed obvious as she participated in her daily routine. Venturing beyond familiar locations in her imagination offered inviting exploration. The promise of change, the possibility of new experiences was awaiting her discovery. She knew her desires were available, but had not the slightest idea of when, where, or how they would manifest. Her religious training, her place in society as a second class citizen, the role she had been assigned like many of her peers had been accepted without question.One of the legacies of slavery was religion and the Negro Community was inculcated with devout beliefs. Evidentiary indications were apparent as Negro female domestics who crossed the BAILEY on their bus ride each day in route to their various destinations with faces buried in their Bibles. Their holy books were major crutches that many clung to while searching for a realization that offered freedom from anguish. Other buttresses may have been available but were not as apparent. Attempting to hold onto that which promised a better future, their Bibles offered unquestioned assistance as Colored females faced their day-to-day obligations. Some of the obligatory duties went beyond their apparent job description.
