Many Americans' first encounter with international modernism came, not on the page, but in person-through the widespread phenomenon of the US lecture tour. Attending to these encounters, Transatlantic Modernism and the US Lecture Tour reroutes our understanding of modernism away from the magazines and other mass media that have so far characterized its circulation and toward the unique form of cultural distribution that coalesced around the tour. The Bread Loser
The Bread Loser is a story about a girl, Achol Mabior, who becomes a breadwinner, contrary to the common belief in her village that a man is often a breadwinner. Achol's brother, Deng Mabior, only completes high school and joins police training to become a policeman. After graduating from the police training centre, he is deployed in the headquarters of the Vice President as one of the diplomatic police personnel. Deng is fearless. He saves ministers held hostages by armed criminals. He gets promoted because of his bravery and starts caring for the Khartoum family. His success ends quickly after the president who respects him is overthrown. The new president still respects Deng but cannot respect his ethnic southern Sudanese, who are accused of siding with rebels in the South. They are murdered in cold blood every day. Deng is not happy with the killing of innocent civilians. Not long after overthrowing his former president, Deng left Khartoum for England, so his wife could pursue a Master's Degree in Law at the University of Oxford, where his sister Achol is already pursuing a Master's Degree in Medicine. He then never goes back to Khartoum. He decides to fly to Ethiopia and join the rebels' training camp. After graduating with others, he goes to the battlefield in Sudan as a captain. His bravery again leads to his fame among the rebels. However, he cannot care for his family and parents since the insurgents are not paid. Achol becomes the sole breadwinner in the family. She gets a job immediately after completing her master's at Oxford. She gets married too and still cares for her parents and her brother's family. This is contrary to the belief that a girl is an education liability who takes away her education from her parent's house to her husband's home. Parents at Baping Village are reluctant to educate their daughters because of this. Deng and his parents understand now that Achol has become a breadwinner and Deng has become a loser. Deng says, 'My parents seemed to think I would be the family's breadwinner. My sister wondered whether she was a bread loser. The reality now is that I am the bread loser.'

Epic! Homer and the Nibelungenlied in Translation
The exhibition 'Epic! Homer and the Nibelungenlied in Translation' in the Taylor Institution Library, Oxford, reveals the different stages, trends, key impulses, and idiosyncratic approaches to the translation and adaptation of Homer and the Nibelungenlied. Showcasing a range of material from the Taylor Institution Library's collections, alongside additions from the Bodleian Library, and from private collections, 'Epic!' explores the deeply entwined history between these two cultural touchstones.This entanglement began with the judgement of the Swiss critic Johann Jakob Bodmer 'Dieses Gedicht hat etwas iliadisches' - 'There is something Iliad-like about this poem', who set the tone for public perceptions of the Nibelungenlied shortly after its rediscovery in the mid-eighteenth century. With these words Bodmer prompted future generations to look at the medieval German epic in terms of Homer, some of whom grappled with this idea quite willingly, others reluctantly. As late as the 1970s, when the German writer Franz F羹hmann attempted to re-envision the Nibelungenlied in the light of national identity in the GDR, he found it necessary first of all to distance himself from the deeply entrenched trope of the 'German Iliad'. What does this trope mean exactly? What are the implications of looking at the Nibelungenlied through the prism of the Homeric epics - and vice versa? In what way did it affect dealing with the texts, with ideas about the epic and ideas about things which have been tied to it in different ways - about gender, nation, violence? And how do these readings still inform our world today?The books featured in this exhibition tell a story, not simply of translation, but of the various attempts by authors to assert ownership of these epics for different national and pre-national identities, for specific ideas of masculinity and femininity, for militaristic agendas and racist ideologies, and also, more recently, for feminist and queer causes. Building on the 2022 exhibition 'Violent Victorian Medievalism' curated by Mary Boyle, 'Epic!' also shines particular light on adaptations that have been created for children, and to the fraught topic of women and violence.Three essays by Mary Boyle, Philip Flacke, and Timothy Powell discuss various stages of the epics' reception in four centuries where these ideological battles have been fought. These essays are accompanied by two extensive appendices that chronicle the inexhaustible possibilities of telling the same story, as well as the often bizarre and sometimes frightening endorsements and critiques of comparing the Nibelungenlied to Homer. The centre piece of the volume is the richly illustrated catalogue for the exhibition at the Taylor Institution Library in five sections: 1: Epic? 2: Translating Verse. 3: Mapping Myth. 4: Powerful Women. 5: The Pierced Body. 6: Violent Revenge. Concluding the volume is a catalogue of the Homeric Fragments in the collection of the Bodleian Library, curated by Nigel Wilson and Peter T籀th.This book is part of the 'Cultural Memory' series of the 'Treasures of the Taylorian', which aims to bring the books from the collections into dialogue with wider topics outside. This is very much a collection about growing up in the 50's and 60's and how becoming pregnant as a teenager and being sent away from home to an unmarried mother and baby home has affected my whole life. The collection includes poems from the Cotswolds, Oxford, Manchester and the Pennines. It includes themes such as love and loss of family, lovers and friends. As I have just turned seventy-five, I very much consider this collection a reverie, looking back and taking stock, going forward to my crone stage as a woman. Of course, there are poems about the pandemic and coming to terms with grief. Edmund Burke (1729-1797) was an Irishman, born in Dublin, who lived in England from his youth until his death. He was a parliamentarian for twenty-nine years, from 1765 to 1794. This was a time of alarms and revolutions: the American Revolution and the French Revolution.Burke was a political empiricist: he wanted to see, to feel, to investigate for himself, to see what was already being done in each specific set of circumstances.
