Orchids Roses & Thorns
Orchids, Roses and Thorns depicts a nature of humanity and their surroundings. The writer focuses mainly on the background, citizens and events in her native country. She presents her work to us in poetry and dramatic duologues expressing pain, contempt, abuse, the role of parenting in their homes, politics and poverty, crime among our youths and the girls of today expected to show up for tomorrow, a lady. She also highlights and glorifies all the excellence her country has produced, the citizens who have achieved greatness, the famously cherished landmarks, food and culture which separates them from other countries. We see after a set of poems and duologues; the writer introduces her own quotes as a sort of connection to what she's going to say next. There's a motion to her poems and conversations; they're like scenes that gets you in tune to what is being delivered and there's a right amount of humor used where she thinks it appropriately necessary. She even expresses her personal struggles with society and being human. What I find interesting about this book is the way in which she guides us through each section of her work without that dull effect, the characters she argues with sets no limit to your imaginations. Her opinions are raw and open for debate. You'll enjoy reading each item.

Five Restoration Travel Hoaxes
This edition presents five English travel hoaxes published between 1668 and 1682. The travel hoax was a popular form of fiction in the English Restoration, with its roots in utopianism, but now expressed as vigorous travel narrative in often rough vernacular prose, a style of writing marked by the rise of pamphlet literature and of the newspaper. These texts -- with varying degrees of skill, and varying degrees of success -- try to trick the reader, to make us believe that these new lands really exist. The first of these hoaxes presented here is now quite well-known: The Isle of Pines (1668), an account of an Elizabethan shipwreck that gave rise to a forgotten English island colony somewhere in the vicinity of the unexplored Australian continent, then rediscovered by the Dutch and the French. But the whole 'discovery' was in fact fabricated by the Republican politician and writer Henry Neville (1620-1694), who was manipulating the form of the fake discovery to conduct a theoretical investigation into the origins of government. Three years later there appeared the now almost unknown The Hairy Giants, authorship still mysterious. This claimed to be in origin a Dutch narrative of exploration, but this time encasing a tale of an initial Portuguese shipwreck in giant-infested South America, where the Portuguese narrator marries into the local giant dynasty, and settles there. Next come two texts by theAnglo-Irish writer Richard Head (c. 1637-1686?), The Western Wonder (1674) and O-Brazile (1675), accounts that approach in different ways the Irish legend of 'Hy Brasil', the fabled appearing-and-disappearing island off the coast of Ireland. Finally there is A Discovery of Fonseca (1682), surviving today in just one copy, pretending to be a Dutch epistolary account of a voyage involving both English and Dutch crew. Shipwreck off the South American coast near the river Orinoco leads to the discovery of a society of solely women -- all speaking Welsh. These are all artfully artless narratives, in which energy has been expended not on a smooth and obviously literary style, but on the hoaxer's rougher verisimilitude. Such texts confront their readers with questions of what is truth, and how we are to identify it. They also remind us that many of the 'real' travel narratives of the time contained much material that might besuspected, or indeed soon came to be identified, as fantastical. But where do we draw the line, these texts ask, and who has the skill to draw it truly?

Chuntao
Chuntao is a novel penned by Xu Dishan. This narrative delves into the triangular romantic entanglements among Chuntao, Xiang Gao, and Li Mao. On the day Chuntao and Li Mao were to be married, chaos erupted as a result of invading troops, causing the two to be separated in their escape. Subsequently, Li Mao enlisted in the army but ended up disabled and reduced to begging on the streets after sustaining injuries to his legs. Chuntao, wandering and making a living by collecting scraps in Peiping (now Beijing), formed deep feelings with a fellow worker over time. When Li Mao serendipitously encountered Chuntao, she carried him back with her. Eventually, Chuntao became the wife to both Li Mao and Xiang Gao, forming a harmonious family unit. In the novel, Chuntao embodies the essence of an enlightened monk, transcending mundane rules and regulations. In Chuntao's heart, there is no distinction between men and women; all beings are equal. Husband is no longer just a husband, wife is no longer just a wife; everything is emptiness. Compassion and forgiveness, transcending worldly notions, have evolved into the religious concept of "emptiness".ChuntaoAuthor: Dishan XuTranslator: Ying Hua Language: EnglishPublisher: Chicago Academic PressWord Count (for space of all pages): 25000 wordsPublishing Date: December 30, 2024ISBN 978-1-965890-06-6About the TranslatorYing Hua is an associate professor at School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Dianji University. Although the street lights were bright, the vendor selling sour plum soup at the alley entrance was still performing with his copper bowl, much like a girl performing the "Pear Blossom Drum", a traditional Chinese folk art that includes singing and drumming. A woman carrying a large basket of waste paper with written characters walked past him. Although her face couldn't be seen clearly under her tattered straw hat, when she greeted the vendor, it was apparent she had a full set of snow-white teeth. She bore such a heavy load on her back that she could not stand straight but paced solemnly, step by step, like a camel, to her own door. There was a small courtyard inside. The woman lived in two remaining rooms of a collapsed wing. A large part of the yard was covered with rubble. In front of her door, she had planted a trellis of cucumbers and several rows of corn. Under the window, there were a dozen evening primrose plants. A few decayed beams lay across the bottom of the trellis, which constituted probably the most valuable seating in her home. As she approached her door, a man came out of the room and hurried to help her unload her heavy burden.

A Tale of Two Cities
The Telemachos Guided Reading Editions of classic novels are designed to encourage educators to teach once again from the unabridged literary treasury of Western Civilization. Each edition provides students-unaccustomed to the sentence structure and vocabulary of novels written over a century ago-a path, alongside the story itself, of directed questions, which light their way toward understanding the novel's concrete details of plot, character, conflict, and imagery, details essential for all young readers to grasp when they enter, for the first time, into the world created by Charles Dickens. Each Telemachos Guided Reading Editionestablishes close-reading skills that become, over time, customary during the act of reading;outlines a process by which educators help students find an appropriate analytical voice for crafting written arguments based upon the evidence the story itself provides and the related associations arising therein;offers sample pages illustrating how a reader can personally annotate a text for evidence and associations in preparation for constructing an essay;includes footnotes for both historical and literary context and, in most cases, a glossary of vocabulary from the novel.About the EditorMichael Degen, Ph.D., has been teaching AP English for over thirty years, primarily at Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas. He has served as a College Board consultant and workshop presenter nationally and throughout Texas, where he has provided instructional guidance for over 5o school districts. Writing the Future
Through essays, poetry, stories, and images, writers and artists offer their perceptions of how we fit into the world and where we might be headed. The theory of evolution connects us to the natural world, explaining how and why we are a part of nature. The idea of progress, on the other hand, projects a destination. "If nature can supply wonderfully elegant solutions to the problem of survival by trying out test models derived solely by chance, then surely it's possible for us to find our way forward," write David Rothenberg and Wandee Pryor, setting the terms of the discussion. But is society going somewhere in particular? Is nature improving? The stories, poems, essays, and artwork in Writing the Future examine the concepts of evolution and progress through a variety of artistic and scientific lenses and speculate on how these ideas can help us appreciate our place in the world. The first section of the book, "Science, Mustard, Moths," looks at evolution's founding concepts and personalities, and includes Theodore Roszak's challenge to a Darwinian orthodoxy, which he traces back to another pioneering theorist, Alfred Russel Wallace. The second section, "Steps from the Cave," focuses on human change, and features Ellen Dissanayake's unusual look at prehistoric cave paintings in France, poetry by John Canaday, and a richly layered short story by Floyd Skloot. The third section, "Places in Time," moves outward to examine the world evolving and includes a reminiscence by Leslie Van Gelder of growing up "in the church of Darwin" and Eva Salzman's account of an infinitely reverberating walk through a Long Island neighborhood. In the fourth section, "Getting to the Future," the writers consider different manifestations of progress: Katherine Creed Page examines a "future perfect" through reproductive technology, Kevin Warwick reports on linking his nervous system to a computer by means of a small electronic circuit implanted under his skin, and Joan Maloof meditates on our possible future "de-evolution"--an abdication of our dominating role and gradual return to nature--which brings the book full circle.

An English Translation of 100 Quatrains by Yuan Mei
IntroductionThis English translation of 102 quatrains by Yuan Mei invites readers into the intimate world of a celebrated poet of the Qing Dynasty. Yuan Mei (1716-1798), known for his remarkable poetry, essays, and culinary passions, believed that the true essence of poetic creation lies in expressing the poet's spirit, personality, and genuine emotions. The translations included here primarily focus on his personal experiences---his journeys and the feelings they evoked.Yuan Mei's quatrains are deeply rooted in the social and cultural contexts of 18th-century China, offering poignant reflections on love, longing, and the passage of time. For example, in "Pavilion of the Chinese Lute," the melancholic strains of a lute resonate through the autumn night, evoking nostalgia for lost connections amidst the ephemeral beauty of nature. Similarly, "Xi Shi" captures the bittersweet paradox of beauty and political intrigue, where personal relationships intertwine with the fate of kingdoms. The translators recognized the necessity of rendering these quatrains into English to provide Western readers with a window into the rich tapestry of Chinese social customs, etiquette, and the complexities of human emotion during this period. As you explore these verses, you will encounter themes of love and betrayal, joy and sorrow, all filtered through Yuan Mei's unique lens-one that harmonizes personal sentiment with the broader strokes of history. This collection not only serves as a bridge between cultures but also as a testament to the enduring power of poetry to transcend time and place. We invite you to immerse yourself in Yuan Mei's poetic world and discover the profound connections that link us all.

"For a woman, writing publicly about her body is an act of courage in a society that commodifies, objectifies, and violates her body throughout her life-until it is ignored and rendered invisible in her elder years. Writing about her body is an act of self-respect, and one of the most radical things a woman can do is respect her body. ...The essays in this anthology shatter generations of shame carried among women by tenderly and triumphantly speaking to the unique yet shared experience of being a soul in the form of a female body. From eating disorders and injuries to childbirth and menstruation, these stories are a homecoming."-Rachel Allyn, Ph.D., licensed psychologist and author of "The Pleasure Is all Yours"Many women face obstacles in publishing today. Even more so if she is a woman of color, a woman with a disability, a member of the LGBTQ+ community or any combination of these. Publish Her is on a mission to disrupt the status quo and remove barriers for underrepresented authors. We do so, in part, by providing access to publishing services and programs through grants. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of this book will benefit publishing grants for underrepresented women authors.
End of Earth
Poet Nolcha Fox and Artist Mike Armstrong have known each other for over 30 years. It is only natural that this would result in an amazing collaboration. "End of Earth - A Collaboration of Poetry and Painting" is the result. The rich, colorful, expression art by Armstrong encouraged Fox's poetic muse to create these thought-provoking poems. Such a collaboration is like no other and, well, you must see this for yourself. It is a little book with a big WOW factor. This would make a lovely gift for art and poetry lovers.***End of Earth, a Collaboration of Poetry and Painting, by Nolcha Fox and Mike Armstrong is ekphrastic art at its finest, a seamless coming together of vibrant brushstrokes and memorable lines in poem after poem. From "They circle" we have "Ah, they are money vampires. / They tell me they can hook me up, / no, cook me up in style." The wit, music, and metaphors that comprise Nolcha Fox's style are alive and well in End of Earth; it contains some of her best recent work. She is our contemporary Emily Dickinson, but also an original, fulfilling the potential of her poetic self in this new book.Peter Mladinic, author of House Sitting, and The Homesick Mortician***Without a doubt, Nolcha Fox is the most interesting, inventive writer of poetry on the scene today.-- John Yamrus, author of Present Tense

No Road Home
The foundation of 'NO ROAD HOME' is built with poems that are often directly written as welcome affirmations of the painful struggle that we may all find ourselves facing, should we slip through the boundaries of their difficult truths. They are welcome via their attempts at understanding the various dilemmas at their core - the situations and emotional conditions that have us lost and wandering in an existential maze. As an initial proposition, I can say that much of 'NO ROAD HOME', though somewhat semi- autobiographical, not only deals with the important details that form the various entanglements of lives, it tends to deal with them in terms of their place in the wider picture and sometimes in abstract and creative ways and from different viewpoints.

Bits off Burning Bridges
In writing the bits that follow I set four main constraints on myself: 1) they had to be short; short enough to fit on a screen without any need to scroll down; 2) they had to be true to the rhythm of everyday, or better, every night speech; 3) they had to somehow have a point or feel or image that made them seem to punch above their weight; 4) they couldn't stray too far from the spontaneous-some next day tweaking might be acceptable but then they're gone. Though they may have a superficial resemblance to poems I resist any temptation to call them that. I like some poetry but I'm not a huge fan and I'm not deeply familiar with the body of poetry. Unlike most poems these bits do not have titles. Titles would be distracting, and in any case, bits don't need titles. They speak for themselves. These things are bits, no more and no less.
