Voices from Four Directions
Storytelling and singing continue to be a vital part of community life for Native peoples today. Voices from Four Directions gathers stories and songs from thirty-one Native groups in North America--including the I簽upiaqs in the frigid North, the Lushootseeds along the forested coastline of the far West, the Catawbas in the humid South, and the Maliseets of the rugged woods of the East. Vivid stories of cosmological origins and transformation, historical events remembered and retold, as well as legendary fables can be found in these pages. Well-known Trickster figures like Raven, Rabbit, and Coyote figure prominently in several tales as do heroes of local fame such as Tom Laporte of the Maliseets. The stories and songs entertain, instruct, and recall rich legacies as well as obligations. Many are retellings and reinventions of classic narratives, while others are more recent creations. Award-winning poet and critic Brian Swann has gathered some of the richest and most diverse literatures of Native North America and provides an introduction to the volume. In addition, each story is introduced and newly translated.
Louisa May Alcott Her Life, Letters, and Journals

Empire of Ruin
From the US Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial and the 9/11 Memorial Museum, classical forms and ideas have been central to an American nationalist aesthetic. Beginning with an understanding of this centrality of the classical tradition to the construction of American national identity and the projection of American power, Empire of Ruin describes a mode of black classicism that has been integral to the larger critique of American politics, aesthetics, and historiography that African American cultural production has more generally advanced. While the classical tradition has provided a repository of ideas and images that have allowed white American elites to conceive of the nation as an ideal Republic and the vanguard of the idea of civilization, African American writers, artists, and activists have characterized this dominant mode of classical appropriation as emblematic of a national commitment to an economy of enslavement and a geopolitical project of empire. If the dominant forms of American classicism and monumental culture have asserted the ascendancy of what Thomas Jefferson called an "empire for liberty," for African American writers and artists it has suggested that the nation is nothing exceptional, but rather another iteration of what the radical abolitionist Henry Highland Garnet identified as an "empire of slavery," inexorably devolving into an "empire of ruin."

Mr. and Mrs. Dunbar
Mr. and Mrs. Dunbar: Poems, Plays and Prose (2021) is a selection of the literary works of Paul Laurence Dunbar and Alice Dunbar Nelson. With such collections Oak and Ivy (1892) and Majors and Minors (1896), Paul Laurence Dunbar earned a reputation as an artist with a powerful vision of faith and perseverance who sought to capture and examine the diversity of the African American experience. In her poems, plays, and stories, Alice Dunbar Nelson explores themes of class, prejudice, faith, and romance while paying particular attention to the phenomenon of racial passing. Mr. and Mrs. Dunbar: Poems, Plays and Prose includes dozen of their individual literary works in a compact, carefully curated volume. Throughout his oeuvre, Dunbar explores the role of the poet in society, grounding each poem within his identity as a Black man in America. In "Frederick Douglass," an elegy written for the occasion of the great man's passing, Dunbar makes clear the consequences of pride and defiance in a nation built by slaves: "He dared the lightning in the lightning's track, / And answered thunder with his thunder back." In "The Place Where the Rainbow Ends," Dunbar, perhaps reflecting on his proximity to death, provides a simple song with a cautionary, utopian vision of hope and happiness: "Oh, many have sought it, / And all would have bought it, / With the blood we so recklessly spend; / But none has uncovered, / The gold, nor discovered / The spot at the rainbow's end." Meditative and bittersweet, Dunbar rejects wealth and power as a means of achieving fulfillment, looking instead to establish an inner peace for himself that he might "find without motion, / The place where the rainbow ends," a place "[w]here care shall be quiet, / And love shall run riot, / And [he] shall find wealth in [his] friends." Whether a vision of heaven or of the possibility of peace on earth, this poem finds echoes across Dunbar's penultimate volume. Nearing death at such a young age, he prepares himself to lose the life he had fought so hard to achieve, a life devoted to reaching the hearts and minds of others. Mine Eyes Have Seen (1918) is a one-act play by Alice Dunbar Nelson. Published in The Crisis, the influential journal of the NAACP, Mine Eyes Have Seen is a brutal portrait of race and identity in twentieth century America. Exploring themes of violence, faith, patriotism, and economic struggle, Dunbar Nelson crafts a poignant and unforgettable work of fiction. In the short story "The Goodness of St. Rocque," Manuela is a popular young woman of status in New Orleans' thriving Creole community. Like many women her age, she hopes to marry a handsome and successful man. Setting her sights on Theophile, she prepares to be courted in the traditional manner of her people. Love Letters to My Black Son is an anthology dedicated to Black sons all over the world. To this day, many cultures around the world exude hate and demise for black males through varying racial stereotypes. From every angle, they witness false statements of how their lives do not matter. Daily we witness hatred through gun violence. Police brutality, negative imagery, and degrading lyrics. These forms of imagery are in every aspect of media with a focus on Black sons. This anthology seeks to change that narrative. Take a journey with each author as they share words of advice and personal sentiments of love for their Black sons. Each writers words of advice and sentiments of love shared with the hope thatyou display your love for a Black son in the written form, Black sons will read each chapter understanding they are loved despite life's circumstances, an image does not dictate your worth and value.
This Earth, That Sky
This is a generous, long-overdue presentation of the major Brazilian poet Manuel Bandeira (1886-1968) to the English-speaking reader. Well over a hundred poems appear here in both Portuguese and English, together with a critical overview that introduces the poet and Brazilian poetry to the nonspecialist and contributes significantly to the existing body of Bandeira scholarship. Bandeira's poetry not only stands among the most important in twentieth-century Brazil but also embodies the experience of transition from one literary movement to another. The poems span a half century of writing, from the publication of Bandeira's first book in 1917 to the definitive edition of his collected work in 1966. Because critics agree that the poet's most influential creative efforts began in 1930 with the publication of Libertinagem (Libertinism), the collection concentrates on the later period. A smaller number of poems drawn from the three books published before this date provide a useful basis for comparison. Candace Slater's fine versions of the poems are augmented by a translator's note that considers Bandeira's poetic language in terms of the particular challenges it offers the translator into English. Her introduction offers a fresh and comprehensive look at the poet whose artistic transformation from nineteenth-century modes of expression to experimental twentieth-century Modernism paralleled the transformation of his country. It focuses on the poet's continuing alternation between an acceptance of, if not allegiance to, the material world and a desire for something more. This fundamental though often subtle opposition is reflected in the title, This Earth, That Sky. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1989.
Complete Frances Harper
The Complete Frances Harper (2021) is a collection of writing by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. Harper, the first African American woman to publish a novel, gained a reputation as a popular poet and impassioned abolitionist in the decades leading up to the American Civil War. Much of her work was rediscovered in the twentieth century and preserved for its significance to some of the leading social movements of the nineteenth century, including temperance, abolition, and women's suffrage. As an artist for whom the personal was always political, Frances Harper served in a leadership role at the Women's Christian Temperance Union and worked to establish the National Association of Colored Women, serving for a time as vice president of the organization. Included in this volume are her early poetry volumes, such as Forest Leaves (1845) and Poems on Miscellaneous Subjects (1854). In "Bury Me in Free Land," an influential poem published in an 1858 edition of abolitionist newspaper The Anti-Slavery Bugle, Harper expresses her commitment to the cause of freedom in life or death terms: "I ask no monument, proud and high, / To arrest the gaze of the passers-by; / All that my yearning spirit craves, / Is bury me not in a land of slaves." She reflects on the theme of freedom throughout her body of work, often examining her own identity or experiences as a free Black woman alongside the lives of her enslaved countrymen. The Complete Frances Harper also includes her four groundbreaking novels. Minnie's Sacrifice (1869), originally serialized in the Christian Recorder, addresses such themes as miscegenation, passing, and the institutionalized rape of enslaved women using the story of Moses as inspiration. Sowing and Reaping (1876) is a novel concerned with the cause of temperance in a time when Black families were frequently torn apart by alcoholism. Trial and Triumph (1888-1889) is a politically conscious novel concerned with an African American community doing its best to overcome hardship with love and solidarity. Iola Leroy, or Shadows Uplifted (1892) is a story of liberation set during the American Civil War that deals with such themes as abolition, miscegenation, and passing. In these novels, poems, speeches from across her lengthy career as an artist and activist, Harper not only dedicates herself to her suffering people, but imagines a time "When men of diverse sects and creeds / Are clasping hand in hand." Betty has published nine books, including the novel she wrote to fulfill the promise she made to her mother before she died. However, she was not able to see the publication of Waiting on Zapote Street, her story.In 2018, actor Edward James Olmos announced that Waiting on Zapote Street had been a winner of the Latino Books Into Movies Award. 100+ Voices for Miss Lou
Miss Lou had the instinctive wisdom to relatelanguage to identity. As a people who have long since lost our identity, wecontinue to search for it. There is an interrelationship between language - thewords we use - and our identity. In that regard, Miss Lou helped us to rememberwho we are. However, mental slavery is still with us. While we continue to denyour own language, our way of expressing ourselves, there is no escaping thefact that our language is part of our identity as Jamaicans. Although a lot of our unique cultural DNAdisappeared during the Middle Passage, Miss Lou had the wisdom and the courageto grasp what remained of that DNA and give voice to the voiceless. She did itwith such decisiveness that I have lived to see the day when Patwa, or JamaicanLanguage as it is properly called, has taken its rightful place as an importantpart of our identity.
