Call of the Void
"I'm falling out of bed languid and embalmed, scowling at post-modernism," writes Brian R. Strauss. Call of the Void is the debut collection of poetry from Southern Californian author Brian R. Strauss. In this new and revised edition, Strauss crafts poignant scenes and challenging narratives centered on motifs of unrequited love, addiction, and toxic codependence. Strauss skillfully circumvents traditional poetic tropes and with a discerning eye for experimentation manages to incite intimations of rage, loneliness, and self-hatred. He utilizes compelling stretches of dialogue juxtaposed against rich sensory passages highlighting both the immense beauty of living against the stark realities of trying to survive. Much in the way life flashes before one's eyes near potentially fatal moments, Strauss' masterful use of language and duality in poetic meaning illustrates a young writer emerging as a fatalistic burst of energy and hints at the greater mastery to come.

Tropic Death
Vivid, lyrical, harshly real and at times quite moving, Tropic Death presents a collection of short sketches from the Caribbean and Central America. The book was first published in 1926, at the height of the Harlem Renaissance, to high acclaim. The stories chart the days of men working stone quarries or building the Panama Canal, of women tending gardens and rearing needy children. Early on addressing issues of skin color and class, Walrond imbued his stories with a remarkable compassion for lives controlled by the whims of nature and oppressed by the effects of colonialism.

Red Head A Reparation for Cruelty
What are we to do with the hundred millioned victims of war? Red Head: A Reparation for Cruelty (2022) reimagines the ancient bardic tradition of Taliesin through a modern lens of redemption, and renewal. Echoes of early Welsh heroic poetry like Y Gododdin (Aneirin's elegy for warriors fallen at Catraeth), these "poems of the unknown soldier"-anonymous voices rising from battlefields both historical and metaphysical --open with vivid battlefield scenes of fallen warriors as a metaphor for sacrifice and resurrection. Poems such as "Barley Feed," "Red Head," "Field," and "Song" evoke the catastrophic defeat at Catraeth, with lines like "Only three have returned from the battle's rage" mirroring the sparse survivors in ancient accounts. Yet elegy transforms into reparation: The red flower symbolizes the perennial return of life from death..Deeper in, celebrations of creation-"Angel Standing in the Sun," "The Branch," "The Green Tree," rooted in eternal streams, counter winter's frost of war. Rivers over stones, blooming hearts, planetary conjunctions, biblical allusions (Proverbs' Wisdom, Paradise Lost's amaranth) with later pieces like "Nightingale" (a Spenserian stanza epic of love, underworld descent, and Persephone-like renewal) and "Banquet of God" (a prophetic vision of apocalyptic judgment and feast) add a richly allusive myth.. north along the Irish Sea of Bangor and beyond.
Native North American Authorship
Can it now be doubted that Native American/First Nations literary voice has become other than an established, and hugely compelling, compass? Native North American Authorship takes bearings, a roster of close readings yet situated within the wider latitudes and longitudes of timeline, place, memory. The emphasis falls throughout upon imagination, the "breath" within given texts be they fiction, poetry or self-writing. This is also to emphasize Native writing as modern (and in some cases postmodern) phenomenon, for sure rooted in tribal particularity, oral tradition, and trickster lore, but also given to reflexivity, the writer looking over his/her own shoulder. The authorship involved is now a literature equally of the city and indeed of geographies encountered beyond North America. The aim is to avoid suggesting some Grand Synthesis or to replay battles of reservation/off reservation ideology. The account opens with two purviews: the scale of Native written texts from early Christian-convert witness to contemporary verse and story by names like Tommy Pico and Eden Robinson, and the fuller implication of a category like Native American Renaissance. Key author portraits follow of N. Scott Momaday, Leslie Marmon Silko, Louise Erdrich, James Welch, Gerald Vizenor, Sherman Alexie and Louis Owens. New longer fiction and anthology stories invite their respective chapters as do the story-collections of Diane Glancy and Stephen Graham Jones. Poetry assumes focus in the accounts of Joy Harjo and her contemporaries and Simon Ortiz and his contemporaries, with specific chapters on Jim Barnes, Linda Hogan and Ralph Salisbury. The epilogue adds further context: "Native" as cultural etymology, the role of site and space-time, and the affinities of Native authorship with other Native arts.
Redemption The Story of Bert and His Boys
Well into the twentieth century, slavery cast its long shadow over African American life. The creation of systemic innovations such as sharecropping, the chain gang, and Jim Crow laws provided former enslavers the means to legally restrict and/or deny people of African descent the rewards of freedom. Within the restrictions imposed by the existence of these restraints on black life, Albert "Bert" Williams, a sharecropper living in South Carolina during the early decades of the twentieth century, struggled to carve out a meaningful life for his family. Despite his lack of material success, Bert enjoyed a reputation in his community as a good man. He was respected as a hardworking family man and revered for his efforts to instill in his children values that he believed would lead to their future prosperity in the society. On a fateful night in1932, however, Bert's three teenage sons committed a criminal act that would change the course of his life. Out of concern for his sons' fate within a racist criminal justice system, Bert acted rashly to protect them from the consequences of their crime. Though performed out of love for his sons, Bert came to accept his behavior on that night as unforgivable for a good man and role model for his sons. Bert vowed to redeem himself even though he knew that his options for doing so after such a senseless act of self-betrayal would be few. But he also knew that they were out there, and he had to pursue them to achieve Redemption.
Poems From a Squeegee Kid
A Conversation Starter! This collection is forty-seven poems written by a young girl living on the street, trying to make sense of life, love, and sometimes journeying into a fantasy land. While witnessing how people treat each other, she came to a realization, that living on the street you are no longer seen as a person, you are treated as an object- a "squeegee kid".
