The Dream And The Lie

Ingram 出版
2021/02/27 出版

The Dream: A belief that anyone, regardless of race, status, or class, can attain his or her own version of success or upward mobility within the American society. The Lie: The idea that the "American dream" was designed to include all Americans. Racism is a toxic mindset that was built into American society, and because of it the American Dream has remained out of reach for countless Black Americans. This collection of poetry by Sharran C. Taylor (Poet Kween Yakini) will highlight this systemic flaw that is directly responsible for the torment that Black Men, Women, and their children have had to endure since the 16th century. The facts presented in this book will show that being set free and being safe are two opposing realities for Black people, and this is why Black Americans have never truly felt safe in their own country despite being emancipated in June 19, 1865. Thus, it is unconscionable for anyone to think that there is no need for reparations for Black Americans when it is evident that the consequences and effects of slavery still plague us today. No, these are not easy topics to discuss, but this is the type of conversation we must have in order to rectify societal issues such as police brutality, hate crimes, racial intolerance, employment discrimination, salary inequalities, and much more. Furthermore, in light of the pandemic that we are now facing in the 21st century, there should also be more awareness and understanding about the skepticism that Black folks have because of all the medical maltreatments and experimentations of the past that were forced upon us without our knowledge or consent. Those actions should not have been taken or permitted in a country that claims all of their citizens are equal, yet there is no doubt that we were violated in many horrific ways. Author Sharran C. Taylor boldly states that because those American principals were not applied to us, then the theoretical American Dream must have had a lie in there somewhere. The Dream and The Lie, will be a great read because it poetically expresses these historic events, while underlining the strength and resilience of the Black American Population. This poetry collection will provide readers with information about our past trials that will give them more clarity about the need and desires for a more inclusive America. Thus, let it be said that Black Americans are looking forward to the day when we all can share in the American Dream that our Ancestors fought and prayed for. Until then, we will continue to push for equal rights and prosperity for all people.

We Are Unbreakable

Karen,Dean  著
Ingram 出版
2021/02/25 出版

We Are Unbreakable: Raw, Real Stories of Resilience is a collection of authentic and inspiring stories about the unprecedented year of 2020 written by 22 incredible women who call Nova Scotia home. In these stories you will find examples of struggle, strength, togetherness and, mostly, of resilience as these remarkable women, from many different age groups and walks of life, share their experiences of living, working, running businesses and parenting through a global pandemic, along with a year of horrific tragedies that rocked the entire province of Nova Scotia in so many ways. A portion of the proceeds from this book will establish a bursary program aimed at women in rural Nova Scotia who have overcome adversity and barriers to pursue their education and who demonstrate the qualities of resiliency and strength that are captured in the pages of this book. Twenty-two contributors is of special significance because that is the number of innocent and beautiful souls (plus one unborn baby) who were taken from us so tragically in April 2020 in the worst mass shooting in Canadian history. We will remember them. We will honour them. And we will build a legacy in their memory. Contributors to this book include: Amy Hill, Amy VanderHeide, Angela Mercer-Penny, Carley Gloade, Colleen O'Dea, Diane Muise, Emily Kierstead, Ifeoma Esonwune, Josie Ryan, Karen Dean, Lisa Drader-Murphy, Margaret Miller, Michele Tessier, Miriah Kearney, Mounfiq Abu, Nancy Regan, Nikki Porter, Robin Legge, Sam Madore, Sarah Stewart-Clark, Tanya Priske, Tracy Stuart

The traditional stories collected in this volume link the memories of Passamaquoddy elders to the world of today's younger generations. The stories help us understand how Passamaquoddy community and culture have changed over the years. Connections between the generations have been weakened over the past few decades with the potential loss of the Passamaquoddy language, which is still spoken fluently by older members of the community. Until just a few decades ago, the stories found in this volume were told orally as an integral part of Passamaquoddy home life. Since the late 1800s, thanks to intense interest in documenting the language and in ensuring its survival, many stories have been written down by native speakers and have been recorded by them, on everything from wax cylinders, beginning in 1890, to analogue and digital media. This book begins with "Maliyan: Mary Ann," an account of life in the Passamaquoddy communities in the early 1900s, and continues with a collection of stories that have been told since that time. They reflect elements from older Passamaquoddy stories about Koluskap and the earliest days of the world. This last set were written down in Passamaquoddy in the late 1800s by Lewis Mitchell, the great-grandfather of this collection's editor, Wayne A. Newell, who has carefully edited all the stories here to reflect Passamaquoddy oral tradition in written form.

Nineteenth-Century Southern Gothic Short Fiction

Ingram 出版
2021/02/14 出版

The gothic is a dark mirror of the fears and taboos of a culture. This collection brings together a dozen chilling tales of the nineteenth-century American South with non-fiction texts that illuminate them and ground them in their historical context. The tales are from writers with enduring, world-wide reputations (Edgar Allan Poe), and others whose work will be unknown to most readers. Indeed, one of the stories has not been reprinted for nearly a hundred years, and little is known about its author, E. Levi Brown. Similarly, the historical selections are from a range of authors, some canonical, others not, ranging from Thomas Jefferson and the great historian and sociologist W. E. B. DuBois to the relatively obscure Leona Sansay. Some of these readings are themselves as disturbingly gothic as any of the tales. Indeed, the boundaries between fiction and non-fiction are tenuous in the gothic South. It is our contention that southern gothic fiction is in many ways realistic fiction, and, even at its most grotesque and haunting, is closely linked to the realities of southern life. In America, and in the American South especially, the great fears, taboos, and boundaries often concern race. Even in stories where black people are not present, as in Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The System of Professor Tarr and Dr. Fether," slavery hangs in the background as a ghostly metaphor. Our background readings place the fiction in the context of the South and the Caribbean: the revolution in Haiti, Nat Turner's rebellion, the realities of slavery and the myths spun by its apologists, the aftermath of the Civil War, and the brutalities of Jim Crow laws.

Power Through Repose

Ingram 出版
2021/02/13 出版

THE literature relating to the care of the human body is already very extensive. Much has been written about the body's proper food, the air it should breathe, the clothing by which it should be protected, the best methods of its development. That literature needs but little added to it, until we, as rational beings, come nearer to obeying the laws which it discloses, and to feeling daily the help which comes from that obedience.

Flirting With The Past

Ingram 出版
2021/01/27 出版

Sepia-tinged nostalgia lures everyone in sooner or later. It's tempting to skip back over bridges burned so long ago we can't remember which one of us even held the match anymore. Everyone has plenty of emotional blind-spots. But how do you validate a memory when the one who holds the other half of your recollection is gone forever? Reyes Cardenas' newest writing collection, Flirting With The Past, oscillates between themes of ageing out of childhood and returning to a place that no longer exists. He's adopted a swift couplet-style, which is perfect because Cardenas' meter is quick bursts of expressive, combustible imagery. If the Barrio Gods allowed the 12-year old you to peek behind the curtain and speak with the 60-year old you, would you ask what happens to Dad- to Lupita- to Pete with the Honda bike? Most likely, you'd find "sometimes your past and your future / meet up with each other to destroy themselves".

The Prettiest Girl at the Dance

John,Dorsey  著
Ingram 出版
2021/01/24 出版

John Dorsey's new book The Prettiest Girl at the Dance is a wonderful meditation on love, as well as life. It is as hopeful and powerful as love itself can be. What makes these poems so special is that Dorsey writes about these women not as simply objects of desire, or conquests, no, he is writing about women and love like the way a sailor loves the sea, or an artist loves the museum. The poems are about interactions as often as relationships, we are not sure if these are women John knew or maybe just met or maybe just saw? It does not matter because they become real and concrete in his images, "she is the cry of a barn owl that once thought it might die alone". The Prettiest girl in Hastings has the face of a ravaged lion! The interaction with these women can be short, but their memories live long in his heart. There is true magic in these poems, real music and the mysteries we all experience, but often cannot find words to express. John Dorsey has all those words and we are so lucky that he has written them down.-Matthew Borczon, Author of A Clock of Human Bones

Don Marler has written a groundbreaking work on a fascinating group of people known collectively as the Redbones. With likely connections to many of the South's early mixed-ethnic populations, the Redbones have almost certainly played a larger role in the westward settlement of this nation than history has heretofore acknowledged. He approaches his subject with a firm hand and talked a broad view of both the importance--and the impact--of these long-ignored settlers.

With Love as the Muse, the poet struggles within eternal realms of question. His doubts fuel his love of Creation and he accepts the burden of the eternal recurrence. The mystery puzzles and defines him as he scrapes through all relevant philosophical trajectories. Finally he recognizes that the fruit of philosophy is rotting on its vine-metaphysics is dead! These poems are dedicated to real people whose value to the poet is immeasurably without reconciliation to the world of appearance. This collection ponders and pontificates the age-old questions.

Stitches and Scars

Ingram 出版
2021/01/16 出版

Rolland Vasin (aka Vachine), a third generation American writer of Romanian decent, was born into a literary family. His grandfather, John, a poet(unpublished), father, Ray, a newspaper reporter and editor, and dabbler in fiction(unpublished), and mother, Betty, the owner of Alphabooks, a retail rare and used book store, all with working-class occupations, had a strong sense of social justice and did not own a TV set until the 1960s. At dinner they debated the merits of political stories of the day from such as the Los Angeles Daily news and Nation magazine among many other sources. A family of American Patriots, all men served respective duty in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. A former Naval Officer Rolland returned from Vietnam to Graduate school and pursued a career as an external auditor in International and Local Accounting Firms. After a series of life-changing events he shifted focus to serving the Accountability needs of child and family-related not-for-profit organizations and embarked on a path of self-expression which passed through phases of Stand-up Comedy, Improvisational Theater, and Performance Poetry. Winning 3rd place in The Laugh Factory's contest for the Funniest CPA in LA, Rolland's poetry has appeared in numerous anthologies, as well as reading Open Mics from Cambridge MA to Big Sur CA. Out of these adventures arose the late-life desire to share his work with wider audiences from which arose this first book, Stitches & Scars, a chronology of experiences in war, love, and social justice advocacy. Published at Rolland's age of 75 years to also honor the contributions of his family to the literary community.. A resident of Santa Monica, Rolland enjoys family gatherings with his two children and his grandsons. He plays the guitar, banjo, ukulele, and harmonica, but not all at the same time.

Ophelia's tragedies haunt us: grief leads her to insanity, and the river takes her life. Yet madness and water may act as conduits for the cycle of death-rebirth-growth. Liminal spaces expand the narrow story of tragic ends. This book draws on possibilities found in the spaces between: health and illness, life and death, sanity and madness. Slip into this poetic river and hazard the deep, tenuous currents pulling at self and other, connection and loss. This is a work of transformation.

The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon

Ingram 出版
2021/01/08 出版

In this collection of thirty-four essays and short stories, Washington Irving explores the personality of his pseudonym, Geoffrey Crayon, while providing a study on human behavior. Rip Van Winkle introduces the famed literacy title character, an unmotivated, care-free man who drinks and parties with strangers in the mountains, falls asleep, and wakes up twenty years later in post-revolution America. Also among this collection are tales of sentiment, such as The Broken Heart, which follows a young woman who grieves the death of her lover. Often described as a tear-jerking narrative, The Widow and Her Son depicts an old Englishwoman as she cares for her dying son after his return from his military service at sea. Switching moods, A Sunday in London provides a vivid portrait of a day in London, focusing on the ways the Church influenced the day's events. In a similar observant lens, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon includes a five-part narrative on Christmas celebrations, starting with a refection on the holiday and concluding with a description of Christmas dinner. Finally, the collection ends with the famous and beloved tale of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horsemen in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Featuring ghost stories, anthropological essays, and emotional narratives, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon includes the best works of Washington Irving. Originally published as a serial publication starting 1819, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon was released in seven highly anticipated installments. With sentiment, elegance, and beautiful prose that excites the imagination, Irving sought to eliminate the animosity between English and American literature with this collection of work. The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon impressed both Americans and the British, capturing the attention of many other influential writers such as Sir Walter Scott and Lord Byron. With classic stories, characters, and a privileged look into historical events and traditions, Washington Irving's The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon continues to excite and satiate readers, even two-hundred years later. Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission. Each and every Mint Edition title gets a fresh, professionally typeset manuscript and a dazzling new cover, all while maintaining the integrity of the original book. Of Spray and Mist

Greg,Bem  著
Ingram 出版
2021/01/05 出版

Of Spray and Mist is a book of poetry released in 2020, containing five sequences of poetry written in and about Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington, and a sequence of poetry written about land and colonialism in the Pacific Northwest.Interpretations: Here is a poet's deep engagement with landscape, a refusal to look away from the ugly histories contained therein. With an anticolonial stance that rejects extractivist economies, Bem notes: "You need sand for concrete. You need stolen land. / You need language that has been hollowed out and hallowed." Courting negative capability on his "ritual hike[s]," Bem seeks "an active emptiness" that gives rise to "elaborate, explosive knowing": of place, of deep time. Declaiming "My questions are purely Anthropocene," puzzling over how to be in right human relationship, Bem pursues "movement everywhere and always, until there's nothing left to be but absent."Yet as lover to the forests, Bem experiences a "whiplash of sudden ecstasy, thrown neck toward canopy." In attempting intimacy and even eroticism ("I want my tongue to enter the crevices of the ferns") with Earth, others, and self, he weaves his own interiority with local ecology, reckoning with solitude, partnership, and community, filled with "longing to be ready for what you bring me." And, finding grace in the natural world, he observes "[t]hat which continues to flow continues to forgive." With Bem as our guide, "[w]e seek to know why it all works the way it does. Why it all works out." Luckily, as we know of poetry, "It is enough. It is the surrendering." This book labors-and rests-in hope, curiosity, detachment, and "[s]udden, implosive joy." It is a burst of bright aliveness, "everything in chromatic everything."- Sarah Heady, author of ComfortWhen I read Greg Bem's work, the visionary & the wild are activated in me. There's a hunger for experience balanced with the kind of presence and intellect you'd find in a librarian. A post-colonialist & anti-racist often found on a mountain in Cascadia, or a rainforest when not in a library, Greg Bem is a 21st Century North American poet, living in the margins left for white men who choose to use their privilege to confront their own fear in an age when so much is breaking down. He knows the answers are in rituals and in the "urges of flora and fauna" and his writing's a report of the evolution of his own personal mythology getting us, "closer and closer to the decontextualized core" of his self and our species. Reading his work validates the desire to allow "the world to continue sliding by in the fullest spectrum it can" when almost all contemporary poetry settles for so much less.- Paul E Nelson, Founder of SPLAB, the Seattle Poetics LAB, and author of A Time Before Slaughter: Pig War & Other Songs of CascadiaGreg Bem's prose poems are shocking - an "auburn stability hypnogogic inciting the spurred." They whisper or cry "I am chanting. I am chanting for it to continue." They "wander until it hurts," and we wander along with them, mesmerized by a collection vast and particular, systemic and lyric, that dives "into the artful spin and whisk of that which does dazzle."- Thomas Walton, author of All the Useless Things Are Mine

Memorias from the Beltway

Ingram 出版
2021/01/04 出版

Memorias from the Beltway is our first FlowerSong Press joint publication and the fourth Red Salmon Press full-length book dedicated to poetry illuminating the words and verses of nascent and established Chicanx/ Latinx/Native American writers. Through our respective presses, we seek to rupture the hierarchical ways traditional modes of publishing insist upon only celebrating the works of the most widely-recognized or prolific authors and marginalizing the leading voices of Chicanx/ Latinx/Native American/POC communities that are constantly innovating and creating. As Red Salmon Press, we are proud that Mauricio Novoa's provocative collection centers on the Central American experience. After over two decades, we are fulfilling a mandate to fully embrace that panoply of Chicanx/Latinx/Native American literary perspectives, which are integral to (re)defining who and what we are. In this work, we are held at attention to listen and contend with themes of working class survivalism and ingenuity, spiritual tenacity, hip hop articulations, and el exilio via the poems of Mauricio, and his generation, to disrupt our own understandings of plural Latinidad. Poems such as "Happy Meals" to "Memorias from the Beltway" encapsulate nuances about salvadore簽o masculinity through imagery of everyday forms of violence and resistance marking a thread between state-sponsored, insurgent, street sites for these expressions. Other pieces demonstrate a quiet invocation of memory, place, and intergenerationality that transports us to the perennial beats of the East Coast and prayers of abuelas. Last, the layers of familial strife, bonds, and strength depicted are a subtle ode to Mauricio's immigrant parents that is neither nostalgic nor cloying. Twenty-five years after the publication the East of the Freeway by ra繳lrsalinas, Memorias from the Beltway is a much needed repuesta to the recollections, which ra繳l explores in another time of vast global, sociopolitical transformation and popular, grassroots uprisings. The intimate manner in which both Mauricio and ra繳l communicate the soulfulness of our rebellion through sparse and intentional words is certainly one point of commonality. Their love of la vida cotidiana is another moment of intersection. Undoubtedly, it is in these small acts of calling our existence that we persevere. Memorias from the Beltway implores us to dwell in these remembrances, mourn our losses, and honor the words we carve out as "lifelines." -Lilia Rosas, Ph.D. Executive Director, Red Salmon Arts Osten, Tejaztl獺n, Oto簽o 2020

We Animals

Emma,Bider  著
Ingram 出版
2020/11/26 出版

In this debut collection of Canadian short fiction, Emma Bider explores how humans relate to animals, and their animal selves. Weaving together science, myth and the quandaries of our climate crisis into twelve provocative stories, Bider deftly brings her characters into contact with the natural world in ways they rarely expect. In "Transplant", tropical volcanoes mysteriously appear in the northern Ontario town of Sudbury. Their primate inhabitants become the focus of an international emergency, and a fixation for two young brothers who won't miss an opportunity to explore an unknown environment. In "Tiger Baby", a group of women decide to offer up their bodies to conservation-literally-and become three of the first surrogates of animal foetuses. In "Marla's Ashes", a couple stay together for their elderly dog in the hopes of easing her pain, if not their own. We Animals offers original storytelling with urgent themes that will linger with readers long after the stories are over.

Ingram 出版
2020/11/13 出版

A WORK IN PROGRESS is a collection of short works from teacher and author, Jon Eekhoff. Delightful, quirky, bittersweet characters frolic from his head into yours. You'll tear up with cry baby eyes from an unexpected stab to the heart...and snort your drink through your nose with astonished laughter. Meet the land baron of cemetery plots, the worst paperboy ever, children terrorized by Daddy's scary stories. You'll be front and center for an excursion through the Icelandic Phallological Museum. The secrets of a $92 donut are revealed, along with why Jon is absolutely sure his sister is a space alien.A note about the author: Before publishing these works, Jon Eekhoff, a resident of Sequim, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula, took a spill from a twenty-foot height. The result was a Traumatic Brain Injury that robbed him of everything but a tenacious hold on life. A craniectomy and lots of work present us today with a new version of Jon...one who is back at his keyboard, creating more short stories, poems and memoirs to make us laugh and cry.

Bleeding Fire! Tap the Eternal Spring of Regenerative Light

Semaj,Brown  著
Ingram 出版
2020/11/12 出版

"In her own words, Semaj Brown 'is a poet for suffocated voices.' Not only does Bleeding Fire! Tap the Eternal Spring of Regenerative Light open our veins on the page to resuscitate us all from a sweep of history that is searing and damning but she shakes all the boundaries of what we mistake for reality. Semaj Brown's Bleeding Fire! Tap the Eternal Spring of Regenerative Light explodes with so much promise of how to sing back the dead on the brink of madness. This book is a collection of poems that become excavation; archaeological dig unlocking, unearthing, unsettling the margins that conjure forth profound metaphysical mysteries. The themes of ancient metrics, Middle Passage resistance, Black body representation, the tapestry of marginalized mapmakers, shape-shifters, musicians becoming magicians, and a testament of Black love are served to us with reverence and purpose. Semaj Brown speaks to us through the dream of poetry where 'the box of drowned eyes that talk from the grave' usher in an underworld where we all learn how to howl our names backwards in the dark. These necessary poems teach us about kinship and all the secrets of gratitude and generosity."Jaki Shelton Green - Poet Laureate of North Carolina
