Where Currents Meet
Where Currents Meet, Tanya Zaharchenko's path-breaking study of literature and cultural memory, moves decisively beyond the simplistic view of a post-Soviet Ukraine divided between east and west. It positions the Ukrainian and Russian components of cultural experience in the country's east as elements of a complex continuum. Combining insights from memory studies and border studies, Zaharchenko analyzes a generation of younger riters in the city of Kharkiv--a "doubletake generation" that came of age at the time of the Soviet Union's collapse and now revisits this experience through fiction. In the works of Serhiy Zhadan, Andreĭ Krasniashchikh, Yuri Tsaplin, Oleh Kotsarev, and others the author reveals how borderlands and frontiers, both geographical and conceptual, acquire zonal qualities of their own as these writers navigate the historical legacy they have inherited.

How Men and Women are Violating the Rules of Standard English on the Internet
Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Paderborn (Kulturwissenschaft), language: English, abstract: This study was set out to investigate if gender influences the usage of Standard English on the internet. "What r u doing 2day?: )" "I do not know. Do you want to watch a movie with me?" It is not difficult to identify both sentences as examples of the English language; nevertheless, upon taking a closer look a few differences are still noticeable. English is ranking the second place of the most spoken languages in the world and is known to be widely spread due several reasons, like globalisation and thereby spreading communication around the world. However, there are many different situations in which English can be used for and different degrees to how well it might be spoken. For instance, the English variety used on the internet in blogs or on other websites, might vary from the English that is used in the news and official documents and might as well contain slang words or grammatical mistakes. Therefore, it is divided into a form of Standard English and Non-Standard English. One of these factors that may influence the correctness of the English language is the aforementioned internet. The internet usage has increased in the last two decades and leads to people communicating with each other from different places, most of the times with English as the main language. In order to communicate as quickly as possible, as well as accurate as possible, certain patterns have been established throughout the years, such as abbreviations or emoticons, like they were used in the first example. Since previous research has shown that women tend to pay more attention to the correctness of their language than men do, this term paper is set out to investigate if there are indeed distinctions between men and women concerning Standard and Non-Standard English, based on communications on the

The Conditional Sentence. A Three Way Analysis of English, Fante, and Pidgin
Essay from the year 2023 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, language: English, abstract: Conditional sentences play key roles in discourse. At home, parents tend to use conditional sentences to influence their children's behaviour. This research looks at the conditional sentence and its formation. The analysis looks at how conditional sentences are constructed in Fante, English, and Ghanaian Pidgin English (GPE). The research lists three examples of each of the four types of English conditional sentences and translates them into GPE and Fante. The analysis found out that all three languages use the same format for the construction of the zero conditional sentence. With respect to the first, second, and third conditional sentences, the study found out Fante had a different tense and aspect system and thus realised the three types listed above, but its subordinate clause was more contextual and phonologically based (stress). On the other hand, GPE uses forms from its substrate, Ghanaian languages, and its superstrate. Its subordinate clause for the three types of conditional sentence are contextual and phonologically based, just as is in Fante. However, no matter the formation process, the research has proved that the four types of conditional sentences can be realised in both GPE and Fante. The research proves that grammar has universal properties. Grammatical construction method may differ, but the same meanings can be realised in all languages, or in this case the three languages under review. The study has proved that conditional sentences exist in Fante, GPE, and English and the same meaning can be expressed in all three languages.

The Irish Revival
The Irish Revival has inspired a richly diverse and illuminating body of scholarship that has enlarged our understanding of the movement and its influence. The general tenor of recent scholarly work has involved an emphasis on inclusion and addition, exploring previously neglected texts, authors, regional variations, and international connections. Such work, while often excellent, tends to see various revivalist figures and projects as part of a unified endeavor, such as political resistance or self-help. In contrast, The Irish Revival: A Complex Vision seeks to reimagine the field by interpreting the Revival through the concept of "complexity," a theory recently developed in the information and biological sciences. Taken as a whole, these essays show that the Revival's various components operated as parts of a network but without any overarching aim or authority. In retrospect, the Revival's elements can be seen as having come together under the heading of a single objective; for example, decolonization broadly construed. But this volume highlights how revivalist thinkers differed significantly on what such an aspiration might mean or lead to: ethnic authenticity, political autonomy, or greater collective prosperity and well-being. Contributors examine how relationships among the Revival's individual parts involved conflict and cooperation, difference and similarity, continuity and disruption. It is this combination of convergence without unifying purpose and divergence within a broad but flexible coherence that Valente and Howes capture by reinterpreting the Revival through complexity theory.

The Role of the German Mother Tongue for the Acquisition of Grammatical Structures of English
Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, University of Trier, language: English, abstract: The aim of the paper is to find out whether grammatical contrasts between German and English imply the frequent occurrence of errors with regard to tenses, aspect, and relative pronouns/clauses. The work is based on the assumption that contrasts between the two languages do cause frequent errors, although there are also others factors contributing to it, such as age, years of exposure, language aptitude, and motivation. The first part of the paper deals with the concept of language 'transfer' in general, touching issues, such as the description of the highly discussed concept, the role it plays in language learning, differences between positive and negative 'transfer', some variant forms of negative 'transfer', namely the production of non-target-like forms, overproduction, and avoidance as well as two different views of transfer, which are CA and EA. The second part of the paper includes a data analysis, which focuses exclusively on selected grammatical differences. Contrasting categories considered in the analysis are tenses, aspect, and relative pronouns/clauses. Unlike contrastive analysis, grammatical differences between the two languages will not only be considered theoretically, but also authentically produced learner utterances will be examined in terms of the errors which can be attributed to contrasts between German and English. For this purpose, samples of learner language by German learners of English collected in the ICLE will be made use of - with particular regard to expected errors due to contrasts between the two languages. In this vein, both qualitative and quantitative analyses of the errors will be applied.
The Forgotten Song of the Romantic Poets
Sadly, the world forgets itself, forgets especially its moments of melody and uplift. Each passing generation, the memory of these moments recedes. My purpose is to rescue the forgotten song of the Romantic poets. I sang it when I was young, and I sing I now more passionately when I am old-the radiance of the fields, the company of virtues, the beams of love, the glow of beauty, the stirring of wisdom--all the lyrics here, in single refrains and epigrams, in poetry and prose. For a world swirling with dissension and division, the song needs remembering.

Orthodoxy
In Orthodoxy, G.K. Chesterton gives a stirring defense of Christianity. Chesterton fought against the reductionist materialism with laughter, joy, and gratitude for the beauty of the world God has given us. We usually think of orthodoxy and the tenets of the Christian faith as dry, arbitrary, and perhaps even nonsensical. Chesterton shows that orthodoxy is beautiful and fits perfectly the strange, quirky world. For those of us who do not pay any attention to the strangeness of the world, this book is essential reading. The world may not have fairies, but it does have the sun, rivers, trees, and the sky, and they are as strange as anything we will find in a fairy tale. Read this book, then go outside and marvel.

The Scottish Enlightenment and Early Victorian English Society
Originally published in 1986, this book creates a vivid portrait of the interaction of Scottish ideas and early Victorian English society over 50 years, illuminated by detail and substantial in its range. The book delineates certain ideas of the so-called Scottish Enlightenment and the education that purveyed them. It considers those who taught and received that learning and how it was taken to England. There, through the mediation of politicians, lawyers, economists, doctors and others, the intellectual life of later 18th Century Scotland had a profound impact on many areas of historical development in early 19th Century England. The book concentrates on the influence of Scottish social thought and medical practice, high Whig politics and political economy, as well as the professional experience and socio-cultural significance of Scottish-trained physicians.
Heritage
Patricia Vicari demonstrates Burton's control over rhetorical strategies and selection of materials in one of the great prose works of the English Renaissance, The Anatomy of Melancholy. She argues that Burton's aim of curing melancholy is both pastoral and therapeutic, since melancholy is both a disease and the state of unregeneracy, but the ultimate authorial presence is that of the preacher trying to bring about conversion. One of his major strategies is to disguise that presence. Throughout much of the book attention is directed toward worldly matters and secular knowledge. The immediate authorial presence therefor is that of 'Robert the experienced, ' another victim of melancholy, offering the record of his own self-cure as a main persuasive tactic.Vicari examines the kinds of knowledges that Burton exhibits to the reader in three chapters dealing with nature, God, and man. In each Vicari singles out for more detailed discussion special problems or topics that were timely or of particular interest to Burton. She locates Burton's reading and opinions within the general state of knowledge about them. Finally, she examines his presentation of this knowledge in his own book.Burton's book, Vicari argues, is neither a structured treatise nor a self-indulgent romp, but a fairly well controlled instrument of persuasion, a swollen sermon. Not all is controlled: Burton's notorious self-contradictions, for example, are often due in advertence and the pitfalls of his method of composition. His personality, too, shapes his writing, and the experience of bitterness and frustration, out of which his book was born - not to mention the ethos of charity and benignity appropriate to a preacher - sometimes unsettles his aim. But on the whole, Vicari maintains, the Anatomy is a coherent and deliberate rhetorical process, an original and appropriate adaptation of homiletic rhetoric.

Collected Writings
Simeon Solomon (1840-1905) was one of the most notable Pre-Raphaelite artists, remembered for his lush literary paintings and Orientalist masterpieces-and remembered, as well, for the tragic conviction he received for sodomy after he was arrested in 1873, an event which ended his ability to display his work publicly. What is less known, however, is that, aside from being a fine artist, he was also a writer of great ability. The current volume, edited and curated by Daniel Corrick, collects all of Solomon's known writings. From his extended prose poems "A Mystery of Love in Sleep" and "A Vision of Love Revealed in Sleep," to his exceedingly rare "Two Treatises on Scientific Subjects," the pieces herein will shed a new light on one of the periods most interesting and talented artists, showing a mind of great delicacy of thought, as well as often humorous instincts. Included also in this volume is the play "Cleopatra's Needle," only one original copy of which is known to exist, as well as his correspondence with Algernon Charles Swinburne, and reviews of his writing by J. A. Symonds and Swinburne.

Gabriele d’Annunzio and World Literature
Gabriele D'Annunzio was an internationally renowned artist and one of the most prominent public figures in Italy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His novels and poetry stirred the enthusiasm of James Joyce and Henry James in the English-speaking world and his repute stretched far beyond - in France, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Japan and South America, D'Annunzio became a pivotal node in the broad networks of decadent exchange. This volume offers an overview of the global dynamics of D'Annunzio's work, from his engagement with multilingualism and translingual writing to the international circulation and reception of his production. Featuring chapters by international scholars, it re-evaluates D'Annunzio with a critical eye and a transnational scope and offers a global assessment of the place that Dannunzian decadence holds in the constitution of a conflicted movement - one that is profoundly cosmopolitan and yet also problematically nationalistic.
