It Is Not About Me
It Is Not About Me: Diaries 2010-2011, is not about the diarist, but provides snapshots of life in Zimbabwe over the 2010-2011 period and during the early years of the Government of National Unity of Morgan Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T), Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF government and the smaller MDC-N of Welshman Ncube. 90 incisive diaries cover a full year of grappling with Zimbabwe's slippery politics: the broken economy, the changing social landscape, a moribund culture, spiritual and physical poverty, unrequited love, reading, writing, the condition of the artist and the art of diarizing.

The Daily Henry David Thoreau
"Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of each." Modernity rules our lives by clock and calendar, dividing the stream of time into units and coordinating every passing moment with the universal globe. Henry David Thoreau subverted both clock and calendar, using them not to regulate time's passing but to open up and explore its presence. This little volume thus embodies, in small compass, Thoreau's own ambition to "live in season"--to turn with the living sundial of the world, and, by attuning ourselves to nature, to heal our modern sense of discontinuity with our surroundings. Ralph Waldo Emerson noted with awe that from flowers alone, Thoreau could tell the calendar date within two days; children remembered long into adulthood how Thoreau showed them white waterlilies awakening not by the face of a clock but at the first touch of the sun. As Thoreau wrote in Walden, "Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in. I drink at it; but while I drink I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it is." Drawn from the full range of Thoreau's journals and published writings, and arranged according to season, The Daily Henry David Thoreau allows us to discover the endless variation and surprise to be found in the repetitions of mundane cycles. Thoreau saw in the kernel of each day an earth enchanted, one he honed into sentences tuned with an artist's eye and a musician's ear. Thoreau's world lives on in his writing so that we, too, may discover, even in a fallen world, a beauty worth defending.

Queer and Trans Voices
What does it mean to work towards our liberation? How can we center and make space for ourselves and others? How is nonhuman animal liberation part of our own fight for queer rights? With a focus on building bridges between movements and dismantling hierarchies between oppressed groups through consistent anti-oppression, "Queer and Trans Voices: Achieving Liberation Through Consistent Anti-Oppression" follows the concise and to-the-point style of resource activist and author Julia Feliz Brueck. In this volume, Feliz Brueck and queering activist-scholar Zoie (Zane) McNeill collaborate to raise the voices of LGBTQIA+ vegans across the world working to acknowledge the interconnections between social justice groups in order to consistently and effectively achieve liberation for all. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Julia Feliz Brueck is a resource activist, writer, illustrator, and educator with a focus on consistent anti-oppression advocacy. Zoie (Zane) McNeill is a queer scholar, activist, and artist heralding from the hollers of West Virginia. "With a refreshing mix of personal stories and accessible scholarship this book makes a most compelling case for how forms of human and nonhuman animal oppressions and exploitations are all a part of the same interconnected, historical web of violence. One cannot come away from reading this strident book without understanding that liberation for one really does require liberation for all. Activists, scholars, artists, and students will all find something in this poignant, passionate, and comprehensively researched book. Decolonize your mind and body - read this book." -Karen M. Morin, author of Carceral Space, Prisoners and Animals "If you care about any singular social justice cause, this book will make the case for why and how anti-oppression work is interconnected at its root and can't be spliced or divided. Single-issue activism needs to be put behind us and Julia and Zane deftly exemplify how to do this." -Aryenish Birdie, Executive Director of Encompass "This is a powerful and heartfelt collection of essays that seeks to redefine the field of animal rights. Building on a generation of eco-feminist writing, the collection of essays are often personal and provide a set of narratives that challenge one's assumptions about gender, race, privilege and animals. The book is also at its best when it reminds us to challenge constructions about what is "natural" and to avoid the temptation to treat individuals as aberrant and responsible for violence towards humans and animals. This collection of essays has changed the way I will teach animal law." -Justin Marceau, co-editor of Carceral Logics: Human Incarceration and Animal Confinement "This powerful work constitutes an important contribution to the struggle for peace and justice by revealing how denying the oppression of LGBTQIA+ peoples is inextricably linked to challenging the oppression of all exploited humans and other animals. This book is must reading for everyone working for a just and sustainable world." -David A. Nibert, author of Animal Oppression and Human Violence: Domesecration, Capitalism, and Global Conflict "This is a fascinating and timely intervention into the fields of queer studies and critical animal studies, which delves deeply into the nexus between veganism and queer & trans identity and politics. The book offers an impressive range of highly reflexive scholarly and activist perspectives on veganism, animal liberation and other liberation struggles all through an explicitly intersectional queer lens...At a time where liberation struggles are so often pitted against one another, a book like this represents a brilliant example of the radical potential of joined up anti-oppressive thinking. Highly recommended." -Dr. N. Stephens Griffin, author of Understanding Veganism

On Drinking
The definitive collection of works on a subject that inspired and haunted Charles Bukowski for his entire life: alcohol Charles Bukowski turns to the bottle in this revelatory collection of poetry and prose that includes some of the writer's best and most lasting work. A self-proclaimed "dirty old man," Bukowski used alcohol as muse and as fuel, a conflicted relationship responsible for some of his darkest moments as well as some of his most joyful and inspired. In On Drinking, Bukowski expert Abel Debritto has collected the writer's most profound, funny, and memorable work on his ups and downs with the hard stuff--a topic that allowed Bukowski to explore some of life's most pressing questions. Through drink, Bukowski is able to be alone, to be with people, to be a poet, a lover, and a friend--though often at great cost. As Bukowski writes in a poem simply titled "Drinking," "for me/it was or/is/a manner of/dying/with boots on/and gun/smoking and a/symphony music background." On Drinking is a powerful testament to the pleasures and miseries of a life in drink, and a window into the soul of one of our most beloved and enduring writers.

The Flame
NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER Named a Fall Read by Vogue, Esquire, The Washington Post, TIME, Vanity Fair and O, the Oprah Magazine. One of Daily Mail and Financial Times's Best Books of 2018."There are very, very few people who occupy the ground that Leonard Cohen walks on." --BONO The Flame is the final work from Leonard Cohen, the revered poet and musician whose fans span generations and whose work is celebrated throughout the world. Featuring poems, excerpts from his private notebooks, lyrics, and hand-drawn self-portraits, The Flame offers an unprecedentedly intimate look inside the life and mind of a singular artist. A reckoning with a life lived deeply and passionately, with wit and panache, The Flame is a valedictory work. "This volume contains my father's final efforts as a poet," writes Cohen's son, Adam Cohen, in his foreword. "It was what he was staying alive to do, his sole breathing purpose at the end." Leonard Cohen died in late 2016. But "each page of paper that he blackened," in the words of his son, "was lasting evidence of a burning soul."
We Both Laughed in Pleasure
"Celebratory, even radical"--The New Yorker "Monumental"--Hyperallergic We Both Laughed In Pleasure: The Selected Diaries of Lou Sullivan narrates the inner life of a gay man moving through the shifting social, political, and medical mores of the second half of the 20th century. Sullivan kept comprehensive journals from age 11 until his AIDS-related death at 39. Sensual, lascivious, challenging, quotidian and poetic, the diaries complicate and disrupt normative trans narratives. Entries from twenty-four diaries reveal Sullivan's self-articulation and the complexity of a fascinating and courageous figure. 2020 LAMBDA LITERARY AWARD WINNER
The Journal of a Disappointed Man
This book contains Bruce Frederick Cummings' (pseudonym: W. N. P. Barbellion) 1919 work, "The Journal of a Disappointed Man". Hailed by Ronald Blythe as "among the most moving diaries ever created", it is full of astute and frank observations, interesting personal philosophy, and profound introspection. The first edition contains a preface by H. G. Wells, which caused many people think it a work of fiction; however, Well's dispelled this rumour even though the true identity of its author was unknown until his death. A fascinating and unique volume, "The Journal of a Disappointed Man" constitutes a must-read for all lovers of non-fiction and would make for a worthy addition to any collection. Bruce Frederick Cummings (1889 - 919) was an English diarist most famous for this work. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Home
Home is an illustrated semi-autobiographical journal by artist and author Jeffrey Schweitzer created between 2016 and 2019. During this period the artist spent a significant amount of time rebuilding a 1957 Stearling travel trailer and using it as a mobile studio space in which to work on art projects. The text for this project is essentially a group of very short anecdotes typed with an old typewriter. All of the edits and imperfections in the texts were deliberately left in the book to embrace the informal journal-like quality of the project. Many of the illustrations in this book are very small pen and ink paintings merely a few inches in size. These originals were created using layers of handmade paper varnished together, giving these pieces a dream-like vinete that alludes to the idea of faded memories. When all of this content was brought together to create the book Home, it was organized more in the spirit of a curated exhibition of writing and illustrations only loosely linear but emblematic of a period in time and style shift in the artists production. This is the first time we see the artist typing stories directly onto very small, layered paintings and taking a more informal approach to storytelling

THE KEEPER OF FAMILIES: JEAN HERINGMAN WILLACY'S AFGHAN DIARIES "I have a lifetime of memories and experiences during my years in Afghanistan and would deeply love seeing something rewarding from those days."J.H.Willacy Intrepid American traveller and photographer, Jean Heringman Willacy is crossing the Hindu Kush Mountains when she falls in love with Afghanistan and begins a completely new life. She is almost fifty years old. The Keeper of Families is Jean's historical yet timely memoir from before and after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Her remarkable Afghan legacy is woven into a single, compelling narrative from diaries, letters, eye-witness accounts, and rare recordings of interviews and on-the-street encounters. With a handshake, Jean goes into business with Afghan merchant Azad to export the then trendy, sheepskin 'hippy coats'. She ensures that her fashion company provides Afghan widows with embroidery work. Over Persian lambswool, she meets English fur trader Henry Willacy who becomes her life partner. It is 1967, a colourful and seemingly carefree time when girls wear mini-skirts and Kabul is known as the 'Paris of Central Asia'. Jean captures her adventures -and misadventures- with the thrill of discovering her new country, its people and their culture. Unaware of growing political unrest, Jean is visiting at the home of Afghan friends when they are pinned down during the ruthless communist coup. "At about 5 a.m....there is a very big explosion...we see more tanks on the move...further up the street, the palace is on fire. We are right in the line of the bombing and strafing by the planes. It is the longest day imaginable." At the tragic onset of the ensuing Soviet-Afghan War, Jean is by now 60 years old. Compassion and indignation override concerns about her age and compel her to go into the refugee camps in Pakistan and those countries granting asylum determined to help those fleeing for their lives. "To be a refugee, more than losing your rights, more than losing your country, you lose the right to choose your way of life." -Dr Ghulam For the next two decades, using her own resources and ingenuity, Jean battles bureaucrats from Peshawar to Washington and befriends an ever-growing number of Afghan refugees -their 'Keeper of Families'- joined in a mutual struggle to overcome the ravages of war and rebuild their lives with dignity. In Jean's words, "Their stories must be told to show the world that it is not merely enough to have escaped tyranny and oppression." Stories like those of outspoken midwife Habiba who wants to write a book, Dr Ghulam facing deportation, or schoolteacher Soroya caught in the clash of cultures. Far from being a 'Western saviour', can Jean make a difference? The book features a selection of Jean's photographs and war-time drawings by Afghan refugee children. It proudly bears the endorsement of the late, internationally acclaimed historian Nancy Hatch Dupree, known as the 'Grandmother of Afghanistan.' "The Keeper of Families is a notable addition to the study of displacement...New Jean-type reporting is needed." As, one refugee crisis follows another, The Keeper of Families remains a relevant and need-to-read book. Hopefully, Jean and her adoptive Afghan family can continue to inspire and, now more than ever, reaffirm our common bond of humanity.
