East of the Sun and West of the Moon
The early twentieth century was the golden age of illustration for children's books, featuring the brilliant work of such artists as Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. One of the finest creations to emerge from this era was East of the Sun and West of the Moon, a jewel of children's literature featuring 25 color plates and 21 monochrome images by Kay Nielsen, a young Danish artist who studied in Paris before moving to England in 1911. The collection included fifteen fairy tales gathered by Norwegian folklorists Peter Christen Asbj繪rnsen and J繪rgen Engebretsen Moe on their journeys across nineteenth-century Norway. Translated into English by George Webbe Dasent, the stories-populated by witches, trolls, ogres, sly foxes, mysterious bears, beautiful princesses, and shy country lads turned heroes-were praised by Jacob Grimm himself for having a freshness and fullness that "surpasses nearly all others."This edition has been newly designed and typeset with all of the dazzling color illustrations and line drawings of the original. It is printed on large-format, 70-pound, acid-free, archival-quality paper with a case-laminate binding for durability and long use-by both children and adults. As C. S. Lewis wrote, "When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." This collection of classic Northern tales is for readers of all ages to enjoy.

Wrecker
'Compelling' Sunday Times A powerful debut exploring the dark side of Cornwall - the wrecking and the drowned sailors - where poverty drove villagers to dark deeds... Shipwrecks are part of life in the remote village of Porthmorvoren, Cornwall. And as the sea washes the bodies of the drowned onto the beach, it also brings treasures: barrels of liquor, exotic fruit, the chance to lift a fine pair of boots from a corpse, maybe even a jewel or two. When, after a fierce storm, Mary Blight rescues a man half-dead from the sea, she ignores the whispers of her neighbours and carries him home to nurse better. Gideon Stone is a Methodist minister from Newlyn, a married man. Touched by Mary's sacrifice and horrified by the superstitions and pagan beliefs the villagers cling to, Gideon sets out to bring light and salvation to Porthmorvoren by building a chapel on the hill. But the village has many secrets and not everyone wants to be saved. As Mary and Gideon find themselves increasingly drawn together, jealousy, rumour and suspicion is rife. Gideon has demons of his own to face, and soon Mary's enemies are plotting against her... Gripping, beautifully written and utterly beguiling, Noel O'Reilly's debut WRECKER is a story of love, injustice, superstition and salvation, set against Cornwall's dark past.

Gods Behaving Badly
Across the world and throughout history, mythological gods have captivated human imagination, embodying both the light and dark sides of existence. While some deities are known for their virtue, many display a striking range of behaviours-some benevolent, others brutal. From acts of kindness and creation to vengeance, deception, and manipulation, these gods reflect the complexities of human nature. In this book, you will meet diverse gods like the African goddess Oshun, who plays a crucial role in the world's creation, and the Polynesian trickster Maui, whose mischievous acts often aim to benefit humanity. Explore the contrasting temperaments of Norse gods, such as the mighty Thor, whose brute strength is wielded with noble intentions, and Loki, a master of cunning and deceit driven by self-interest. Discover the unpredictable use of magic and shapeshifting among these deities-like Zeus, the king of the Greek gods, who frequently transforms into animals or objects, often with dubious motives. A universal theme emerges across these mythologies: a belief in life after death, where rewards or punishments are meted out based on virtue-or in some cases, social standing. While some gods dispense justice, others themselves endure eternal punishments for their transgressions.

They're in newspapers and magazines, too; in the conversations we share with old friends, and with new ones. They're on our mobile phones, in aeroplanes, in submarines, and even in our dreams. Our obsession with, and craving for, stories rests squarely with the way we are so absorbed by them, just as it does with the way we don't need to continually consider how and why they work. Most of the time, when reading or listening to stories, we forget that these tales have been shaped through the passage of time. Like pebbles in a river smoothed by rushing waters, they were honed through centuries of telling and retelling. The stories contained in this anthology are a fragment of a tradition that has shaped humanity, just as it has been shaped by humanity. At The Scheherazade Foundation we regard stories and storytelling as an achievement of our species equal in significance to the development of language, art, and architecture. We invite you to dip into the tales in this small treasury - gleaned as they are from various corners of the world - to reflect about them, and to consider the wisdom they hold.
