The Arabian Nights Entertainments
During the Islamic Golden Age, a collection of Middle Eastern folktales known as One Thousand and One Nights was compiled in Arabic. Because of the earliest English-language edition's (c. 1706-1721) rendering of the title as The Arabian Nights' Entertainment, it is sometimes referred to in English as the Arabian Nights. Over many centuries, writers, translators, and scholars from West, Central, and South Asia, as well as North Africa, assembled the work. Some stories have literary roots in Arabic, Egyptian, Sanskrit, Persian, and Mesopotamian literature from the ancient and medieval periods. Many of the tales were originally folktales from the Abbasid and Mamluk eras, but others-particularly the frame story-were likely inspired by the Pahlavi Persian novel Hezr Afsn, which itself had some Indian influences. The framing technique of the story of the ruler Shahryar being told by his wife Scheherazade is a feature of all copies of the Nights. The subsequent tales develop from the first; some are standalone while others are framed within other tales. Only a few hundred nights are included in certain editions, whereas 1001 or more are present. Although the verse is occasionally employed for songs, puzzles, and to show strong emotion, the majority of the content is written in prose.

Why We Are in Need of Tales
In Why We Are in Need of Tails - the first book in the Huk and Tuk series - we learn how we all used to have tails that helped us connect to each other and the world around us. But then we lost our tails - and with that loss went our most nuanced way of communicating with the world. In Why We Are in Need of Tales, Parts I through III, Huk and Tuk find a way to compensate for this loss. They discover that by discussing stories - or tales, if you like - they can recreate that deeper understanding of themselves, each other and the world, which is essential for feeling connected. Now, in Why We Are in Need of Tales, Part IV - the final book in the series - Huk and Tuk look at how we deal with situations that are beyond our control. For example, can we really control nature, or must we find ways to work with nature instead? Although the tales they discuss may seem simple, the complex questions they raise make them rewarding for adults and children to ponder together.
The Clan of Munes
Taking inspiration from the peculiar forms found in driftwood, old roots, and shoreline stumps, seascape artist Frederick J. Waugh created a new type of American fairy folk, the Munes. The story of a wizard who creates a clan of little folk out of knobby limbs and branches is well-illustrated with numerous pictures. The Clan of Munes was published in 1916."The drawings are the most wonderful things ever seen . . ." (1916 review)

Of Love and Forge
The god of the forge...Life was good in the Neosphere District. I'd made a name for myself as a renowned supernatural bounty hunter, holding the record for most harpies slayed. But the best part about living in the future? Avoiding the other Olympian gods. Banishing a guy from Olympus because he was "imperfect" tends to make one hold a grudge. Go figure. And no other god possessed the means to time travel. But I did. Thanks to the portal hopping device I forged.Yup. Life. Was. Grand.Until a bounty popped up on a certain love goddess. Aphrodite and I had been friends since we were wee gods. I'd be lying to myself if I never thought our "innocent" flirting banter were real on occasion-kidding myself if I said I never wanted things to go beyond platonic. Hence, why I recently kept my distance. For my own sanity. So, of course, I made the grave mistake of taking the godsdamned bounty. The goddess of love...Since reconciling with my son Eros, after centuries of bad mojo, I'd decided it was time to clean up my act. Ride the straight and narrow. My companion service, Sans Solo, became just the ticket I needed. And it allowed me to use my powers in disguise in modern California under the name Vena Milo. With the aid of my best friends, and fellow goddesses, the Graces, we ran a legitimate business. All was right in the world.Until the volcano god showed up. Hephaistos. Heph-a lifelong friend who never failed to confuse me mind, body, and soul. Especially when he showed up with a magical pair of handcuffs. His audacity pissed me off, but the mere sight of him, the smell of him, made my stomach flutter. That...I couldn't deny. And when Heph's plan goes to Tartarus things got even dicier and we became...the hunted.-A cyberpunk fantasy Hephaestus x Aphrodite romance that defies myth but answers true love's call-
Homer's Ill Iliad
HOMER'S ILL ILIAD is adult satirical literature featuring adult language and humorous adult situations. The poet/bard Homer, reputed to have been blind, is credited with orally describing the Iliad (the story of the end of the ten-year Trojan War), and the Odyssey, the epic tale of the Greek hero Odysseus, who had been punished by Poseidon (Neptune, the sea god) for ten-long-years after the Trojan War. Homer had lived during the time when alphabets and writing were being developed (around 1,000 BC), so his two epic poems were later recorded by educated scribes and both stories exist today in their present forms. Around 1184 BC, King Agamemnon of Mycenae, and his brother, King Menelaus of Sparta, had led the great expedition of a thousand Greek ships and 50,000 warriors against the Asia Minor city of Troy. The kings of the Greek city states were notorious pirates and marauders, but to glamorize their siege upon Troy, a mythological story involving Helen of Sparta, wife of King Menelaus, claimed that she had been wooed by Prince Paris of Troy to elope to Asia Minor. Thus, Helen of Sparta soon became Helen of Troy, and her abduction became the principal cause of the Trojan War. The Trojan War, fought during the late Bronze Age, had taken almost ten-long-years, and the lengthy conflict was finally won when Odysseus, a brilliant schemer and ball-breaker, had a magnificent Wooden Trojan Horse built, and then had the Greek warriors situate the structure outside the main gates of Troy. The city was strategically located at the Hellespont Channel between Greece and Persia (now Turkey). Greek heroes were hidden inside the stomach of the colossal horse, and during the night, the warriors stealthily climbed-down a rope, opened the gates to Troy, and allowed thousands of Greek warriors to enter, rampage, sack and plunder.

The Collected Enchantments
A monumental career retrospective"This vibrant collection brings together World Fantasy Award winner Goss's exquisite interpretations of and variations on familiar folk and fairy tales. The [poems and stories] span the length of Goss's career ... All approach well-known stories from unexpected angles and with deep empathy for the characters ... The abundance of pieces sometimes has the effect of a musical fugue: common motifs, places, and characters echo through the works, with each reappearance adding something fresh." -Publishers Weekly A wicked stepsister frets over all the ways in which she failed to receive her mother's love. A lost woman travels through an enchanted forest looking for someone who can remind her of her name. A girl must wear down seven pairs of shoes to gain help from a witch. A fox makes a life with a human, but neither can deny their true natures. A young woman returns to her childhood home and the fantastic stories she left there. A man lets himself be taken prisoner by the Snow Queen to prove that the woman who loves him would walk barefoot through the ice to save him. Medusa cuts her hair for love. The Collected Enchantments gathers retellings of folk and fairy tales in prose and verse from World Fantasy and Locus award-winning author Theodora Goss, creator of The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club series. Drawing from her Mythopoeic Award-nominated collections In the Forest of Forgetting and Songs for Ophelia and her Mythopoeic Award-winning tome Snow White Learns Witchcraft, and adding new and uncollected stories and poems, The Collected Enchantments provides a resounding demonstration of how, as Hugo and Nebula award winner Jo Walton writes, Goss provides "a vivid, authentic and important voice" that, in the words of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association Grand Master Jane Yolen, "transposes, transforms, and transcends times, eras, and old tales with ease." PRAISE FOR THEODORA GOSS"In the tradition of great modern fantasists like Angela Carter and Marina Warner, Theodora Goss's sublime tales are modern classics-beautiful, sly, sensual and deeply moving . . . I envy any reader encountering Goss's work for the first time." -Elizabeth Hand, winner of the Mythopoeic, Nebula, Shirley Jackson and World Fantasy awards"The elegance of Goss's work has never ceased to amaze me. It feels effortless, but endlessly evocative and suggestive, flowing with the rhythms of both the natural world and the intimate socio-familial cosmos. Goss's language fits together like gems in a complex crown, a diadem of images and motifs, resting gently on the head, but with a deceptive weight." -Catherynne M. Valente, winner of the Mythopoeic, Locus, Hugo, Otherwise and Theodore Sturgeon awards"Theodora Goss re-fleshes and re-clothes old tales in multifarious ways. Through prose and poetry, Goss shines her unique light into the fairytale forest-and many bright eyes gleam back." -Margo Lanagan, Aurealis, Ditmar and World Fantasy award winnerWith cover art by Catrin Welz-Stein and interior black and white illustrations by Paula Arwen Owen.
