The Flesh and the Spirit
"You say, the times are troublesome, the times are burdensome, the times are miserable. Live rightly and you will change the times. The times have never hurt anyone. Those who are hurt are human beings; those by whom they are hurt are also human beings. So, change human beings and the times will be changed."-St. Augustine of Hippo, Sermon 311, 8Growing up on the northernmost edge of the African continent, young Augustine had never known a life without trouble and conflict. Whether between political factions within the Roman Empire, his pagan father and Catholic mother, or even divisions within the Church herself, Augustine's world abounded with cultural, ideological, and spiritual contradictions. Then there were the battles that waged within-those between flesh and spirit, intellect and faith.Choosing a path of self-indulgence, Augustine hurt the ones he loved the most: his pious mother, socially unacceptable lover, and out-of-wedlock son. Miserable and hollow, he sought and found a new life with Christ. His transformation forever changed the Church and his example continues to guide us through our own troubled, burdensome, and miserable times.

FATHER TOM AND THE POPE & Alphonse Daudet’s History of the Pope’s Mule (Illustrated)
FATHER TOM AND THE POPEby Sir Samuel Ferguson, keeper of the Irish Records. This charming little book is quite a literary gem, a burning satire, easily surpassing "Mr. Dooley." In fact it is almost Rabelaisean in its rollicking hilarious humor. Why is it, that Ireland produces few if any great writers? The islands positively swarms with screaming politicians, fanaticeditors, and sleek, oily, well trained priests, but of thinkers there are none. In the old days, when its people were Pagan, when their gods were ideals of heroism and battle, they were a venturous people, warlike, bold and free. Ireland then produced bards of power and men of renown who could not be mastered, intimidated or mentally subdued. But since the unfortunate people embraced and accepted as a true false Syrian superstition, they have lost all their former glory and grandeur. The downfall of Innisfail dates from the landing of St. Patrick, the preaching of that untruthful sermon on Tara Hill, and the inoculation of the native Celtic mind with the base, submissive and puerile philosophy of the "lowly" Nazarene. In the argument of the three leaved shamrock there is an illusion of the senses, a deliberate deception. It was a hollow oratorical sophistry, but had the effect probably intended. It weakened and disarmed the native mind. It prepared the way for other fallacies. It overthrew the morality of the heroes and led on to the military and economic subjection and exploitation of the island by successive swarms of foreign conquerors. Vikings, Danes, Saxons, Normans, Cromwellians and Hollanders all found it an easy prey. Personal freedom and independence utterly perished. Courage and manhood depreciated. Hopelessness and fear reigned. The intellect of the nation was poisoned. Is that notthe exact meaning of Tom Moore's celebrated lament: "So sleeps the pride of former days, So glory's thrill is o'er.And hearts that once beat high for praise, Now feel that pulse no more."No more kings and ladies bright, The Harp of Tara swells, The chords alone that break at nightThe tale of Ruin tells.""Father Tom and the pope" is not a great book, remember. We do not say it is; but it is a most delightful one. Some rays of the ancient genius of the people scintillate through it. The hero of the tale, Father Tom of Connemara, goes on a visit to the Vatican. He kisses the pope's housekeeper, raises the dander of His Holiness thereby and creates no end of marvellous complications. Illustrated. This edition includes Alphonse Daudet's "History of the Pope's Mule."

Rather, if we open our fists or hearts wide, the water (grace) will overflow our palm (heart)!" Such Pearls are arranged in the book accordingly to help us recognize our true nature.
I Am the Best

The good example of her richer and humble friend, Princess Amanda, made Pam to change her way of life. This book points out the importance of being good and respectful towards other people irrespective of their race or social status. Using a palace as a setting, the author depicts the discrimination, segregation and racism that happen in the society. The king and the prince exemplify humility and show love and respect to people. My Love Sent from Above
"What is it, Minister Andre?" Andre tried to figure out how to tell him without sounding ridiculous. "Pastor, I have fallen in love with the young lady I was telling you about." Pastor Seavers was surprised, "You mean the lounge singer?" Andre waited a bit and then said, "She is not a lounge singer, pastor. She sings with her family on stage all over the world. She also sings gospel at times." Paul just stared out the window. His eyes were red, and his hands were shaking like a leaf. Will looked at his long-time friend, shook his head, and said, "Man Paul, you know she can press charges? How could you attack her like that?" Paul closed his eyes, and rubbed his eyebrows, "She just kept talking, Will. Plain silly! I lost it. Man, for a minute there, I wanted to choke the living daylights out of her. This guy does not have a pot or a window!" "What?" Will asked. Paul looked at him. "He has nothing! And here she is just repeating that he is the only man for her. What got into her, Will? What in the world happened to her? She is the smartest child I have. She just lost her mind, man." Will shook his head. "Love got into her Paul. It is love."

Into this global scene comes Dr. Richard Gesar, brain physiologist and Tibetan tulku, who develops a spiritual technology, a way to measure and create spiritual experience. With his union of science and spiritual wisdom, he comes to create a humanity happy, whole, and at peace with God and with one another. It is at last a human completeness; or is it a final deception in which the only people able to see it are those willing to remain unhappy? Michael Pryor, skeptical and atheistic investigative reporter, and his brother Daniel, a Christian without peace of mind, come to similar conclusions from very different sides. A novel of intrigue and deception, philosophy and spirituality, in which the desire to find God is itself the lure. An end-times novel in which the Christians lose the final battle.

The Saint Nicholas Society
Fred went from having it all-the girl, the car, the mansion-to being on the street. After being taken in by a kindly priest, he is diagnosed with cancer and begins to question what's left for him to live for. Nearly falling off the wagon, he is shocked and inspired while watching a modern-day Secret Santa on a TV news broadcast in the bar. Soon he begins to emulate the real Saint by secretly giving to those in need. Along the way he teams up with a band of "misfit-toy" compatriots who each question what life has in store for them. Fred's story parallels the historic Saint Nikolas of Myra. Told in first person, we learn of then Nicholas's friendship with an avowed pagan, the loss of his parents at an early age, and his being taken in by an ordained uncle. We follow his life and rise in an outlawed Church, the hardships and fears he had to endure, the communities he created, and his eventual service to the emperor, Constantine. Woven together like a fine tapestry, Fred and Nikolas's stories inspire everyone to remember that the best ways to live are through kindness, community, and good deeds-showing that the more things change the more they stay the same.

Faith and Fortitude
The life story of John Rogers, first of the Protestant Martyrs under Queen Mary and editor of the first authorised English Bible; told as if in his own words, from a newly 'discovered' secret manuscript hidden in the walls of Newgate Prison. This historical fiction is based on a core of extraordinary historical fact, enlivened and elucidated by plausible fiction from the Martyr's twelve times great grandson. The story spans John Rogers' early, formative life in Deritend and exhilarating time at Cambridge, where the future leading lights of the English Reformation were gathered and famously congregated in The White Horse pub, otherwise known as 'Little Germany' in reference to the seat of European Reformation. On to Oxford and then, following several seminal experiences, into the Catholic Church, leading one of the London churches under the shadow of St Paul's.Circumstances and his conscience lead him then to Antwerp, where he encounters and is forever influenced by the Bible translator William Tyndale. Evangelical conversion follows for Rogers and after Tyndale's execution, it is Rogers who completes the Thomas Matthew Bible, the first authorised English Bible in the reign of Henry VIII. In Antwerp he also meets and marries the love of his life, Adriana - who becomes his lifelong companion and counsel and with whom he has eleven children. With Adriana he moves to the very heart of Reformation, Wittenberg, where he meets and befriends Philip Melanchthon, confidant to Martin Luther himself.A pastoral role in the Lutheran Church in Meldorf follows, where Rogers faces the challenge of taking on a congregation that had lynched their previous minister in a drunken riot. Meanwhile King Henry VIII's death heralds the ascension of his son King Edward VI, whose predisposition toward Protestantism under the influence of his reformist Council drives reformist policies forward. Rogers at last considers it safe to return to his homeland and is rewarded with the livings of St Sepulchre's in London and a Prebendary at St Paul's. Halcyon days for the reformists, but reversal follows on King Edward's untimely demise and the ascension to the contested throne of his sister, the Catholic Queen Mary.Called upon to preach at St Paul's Cross in these tumultuous and dangerous times, Rogers first adopts a cautious approach, adhering closely to uncontested aspects of the Gospel. But when called upon to do so again, just three weeks later, he senses his destiny and preaches boldly and bravely against what he sees as the errors, inequities and evils of the Papist Catholic Church at the time. Inevitably this leads to his arrest, initially house arrest, but subsequently imprisonment in the infamous Newgate Prison.Once the Privy Council has had reinstated the medieval Act directing the burning of heretics, Rogers is finally summoned before them to answer for his beliefs. Unwilling to betray his faith, he remains resolute under examination and is thus excommunicated and passed over to the civil authorities for sentencing to death by burning. His final day arrives and he goes boldly to meet his end - meeting his wife and eleven children, the last of whom he sees for the first and only time, on this his last walk as he passes St Sepulchre's on the way to Smithfield.Resolute to the last in his beliefs, Rogers shows extraordinary bravery in meeting his end, washing his hands in the flames and praising the Lord to his last breath whilst the watching crowd celebrate his faith and fortitude. His life, work and death will have lasting impact on the future of Reformation and Protestantism in England and the world for centuries to come.

Catharine Sedgwick, Redwood: A Tale
Redwood follows Ellen Bruce as she enters adulthood, navigating the clashing social currents of pious New England farmers, southern belles from South Carolina, slave-owning atheists from Virginia, and sophisticated Philadelphia socialites on her journey to discover the secret of her parentage and craft her own identity as a strong American woman. The novel's embedded slave narrative provides a powerful early prototype for later anti-slavery fiction. Ellen's formidable mentor, Debby Lenox, a single woman who stands over six feet tall and makes her own rules about what constitutes respectable behaviour for women, is remarkably refreshing and original almost two centuries after Sedgwick crafted her. This new edition includes a historically and theoretically informed critical introduction that situates the novel within American social and literary history, also featuring a bibliography for further research and appendices detailing the significant differences between the two nineteenth-century editions.
American Foreign Policy
Thomas Ausa, an obscure but adequately credentialed professor of American International Relations, at the end of his career imagined he might best illustrate what he called the ""themes"" or ""frames"" or ""buzzwords"" of American foreign policy by telling a few stories about typical Americans living through these pandemic times in ways he hoped would illustrate terms like ""deterrence,"" ""containment,"" ""asymmetrical warfare,"" and ""mutual assured destruction."" The novel fragment he left attempts to do that. Whether he succeeded only future readers, if any, will tell. The afterword by Liv Wells, former U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission at several American embassies, doesn't help much.
