Das Buch handelt von einem Amsterdamer Kaufmann namens Droogstoppel, der von der Kaffeeb繹rse lebt und genau so dr繹ge ist, wie sein Name verhei?t. In das saturierte Leben des philistr繹sen Droogstoppel dringt ein ehemaliger, jetzt mittelloser Bekannter ein, der um Beihilfe zur Ver繹ffentlichung eines Manuskripts bittet. Dieses Manuskript, das seine eigene Entstehungsgeschichte enth瓣lt, bildet den gr繹?ten und entscheidenden Teil des Buchs; es handelt, weitgehend autobiografisch, von der Karriere des Kolonialbeamten Max Havelaar auf Java in Niederl瓣ndisch-Indien. Diese endet, als er schwere Verfehlungen seiner Vorgesetzten aufdeckt und letztlich das gesamte Kolonialsystem in Frage stellt. Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) war ein irischer Schriftsteller und Satiriker der fr羹hen Aufkl瓣rung. Er hat auch unter folgenden Pseudonymen geschrieben: Isaac Bickerstaff, A Dissenter, A Person of Quality, A Person of Honour. Er studierte Theologie in Dublin. Seine bekannteste Satire ist A Modest Proposal, worin er zur L繹sung von ?berbev繹lkerung, Armut und Kriminalit瓣t vorschl瓣gt, irische Babys als Nahrungsmittel zu nutzen und durch Export Profit daraus zu schlagen. Er schrieb danach mehrfach gegen die Zust瓣nde im englisch regierten Irland.
